    Check for:
    1) manufacturer's name and address to look up on-line their registration and certification
    2)FDA logo not allowed
    3) unmarked packaging
    Don't buy from resellers. Buy from dealers with a history of PPEs.

    The professor's comparing the mask fails with a student failing a test by 1 or 2 points is like comparing apples to oranges. A student failing means his attempt was useless. The masks being 1 or 2 points below does not render the mask useless. It would still be good for most everyday uses by none medical professionals. There are 2 aspects to protection, one is the filtration efficiency, many masks do not meet those requirements, but more problematic is the fit test. This is a test that determines how well the mask seals against your face. This is very difficult if not impossible to do with ear loops, which is why proper N95 masks all have head bands.

    • @looiart
      @looiart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So wear it properly is the key....

    • @CHS10901
      @CHS10901 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@looiart yes wearing it properly and fitting it properly is key, but the KN95 masks with ear loops can't work because the pressure required to seal it to your face would be so uncomfortable on your ears that you could not stand it. The one thing that is a big help with the ear loops is to add a couple of behind the head straps or ear savers. People should position one lower around the back of the head just above the neck and the other high on the crown of the head. This is a similar problem to the N95 masks as I have seen people not place the straps properly with them either. But as you said, "wear it properly"

      Wouldn't the seal matter less the easier it is to breath through the mask? Nano-fiber masks are very breathable for example. Since the air doesn't meet as much resistance going through the filter it would have less pressure to go around the mask instead of through it.

      Yeah, but I think it's a pretty alarmist response in this situation. There isn't anything magical about 95% filtration efficiency. A 94% efficient mask is about the same as 95% efficient one. They both offer ~10x better protection than cloth masks.

    • @johnwang9914
      @johnwang9914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@magicdave Yes, but due to the higher transmissibility of the variants, European nations are already mandating masks be FFP-2 rated , the European equivalent of N-95 and highrise apartments and n Canada have had transmissions traced to a few minutes encounter while masked in elevators. It may be advisable to use the better masks or a mask brace to improve fit if you are expecting to be in elevators or even mass transit. Note the double masking recommendation in the US due to the variants was effectively to use the second mask as a mask brace to improve fit and essentially was an attempt to deflect from affecting the medical N-95 supply chain.
      As to ten times better than say a surgical/procedural mask. If the fit can be improved to essentially 100% either by glue or mask braces, the filtration is 80% then if the material is doubled as in double masking, so long as the fit remains 100%, two 80% filtration layers equals 96% so technically the N-95 masks are really only double the effectiveness of surgical/procedural masks if the fit problem can be addressed. In theory double masking could almost be as effective as N-95 respirators especially if fit is improved by mask braces or clothing glue hence the US double masking recommendations.

    Some helpful information in this piece, but there are some things that bother me about it. It poses the question, "*BUT* do they REALLY offer all that extra protection??" The actual question is, "Do ALL N95/KN95 brands offer extra protection?"
    But what bothers me more about this piece, is that the reporter herself is not properly asked, AND not wearing N95 or KN95 type mask, which seems to underscore what comes off to me as her skepticism regarding N95s in general. Why isn't she skeptical about the poorly-sealed mask she's wearing?
    Worst of all, is that ONE OF THE LAB TECHNICIANS TESTING THE MASKS IS IMPROPERLY MASKED. And they're determining mask safety? Kind of mind-boggling.

Why dont they have to isolate in a hotel? Just check exceptions to international travel on Canada's government web site.

    Certified N95 has niosh certifications. Usually a bit pricing and kinda hard to breath inside because it filters 95% of your surroundings. If you purchase N95 respirator fit it and try to spray a colonge or perfume if you cant smell it. Your lucky your filter works 95%. But if you can smell goodluck.. 😁
