    Wait, so if someone wants to sell life saving equipment like the N95 masks at 10 times the price is a criminal (and I agree), but if a pharmaceutical company increases the price of life saving medications over time is ok? WTF?

    • @Slowcarfastbeans
      @Slowcarfastbeans 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My thoughts are it’s not so much preference as it is federal regulation that requires testing to demonstrate safety and efficacy before a company (domestic or international) can market and sell medical devices in the US regulatory market. It’s FDA red tape that costs time and money to gain approval, which could make a product uncompetitive. Currently it appears the FDA has lifted the red tape in the interest of easing shortages but it’s too late now. The US has to compete with all other countries who have more influence on the supply chain.

      N95 is just a US standard. Years ago, I was involved with electrostatic powder coating systems and this was the type of mask I used. The N95 specs require that it can filter out 95% particulates of 0.3 microns. The KN 95 is the Chinese standard, the FFP2 is the EU standard while the Korean standard is the KF94. Basically, all these have almost the same specs. 3M China does manufacture N95 masks but these are sold in China and to the other Asian customers. But I did hear, the Chinese government has given the approval for 3M China to ship 10 million masks to the US. As there is still a shortage of N95 masks, the FDA has given approval for the KN95 masks to be used in US hospitals.
      Most of us, do not need N95 masks. Just use the normal 3-ply masks. BTW, in China, doctors and nurses wear both KN95 and 3-ply surgical masks when handling corona virus patients.
      The US and most European countries do not have a mask wearing culture. But experience in Asia has shown it does help to prevent the spread of this contagious disease.
      In Singapore, each household has been provided with a few masks about a month ago. This week, we will receive a washable mask. Stay in and stay safe!

    Not entirely true. I have been wholesaling KN95 masks from Asia, since the pandemic traveled East, earlier this year. Another issue is logistics - companies like DHL have made it difficult and expensive to import PPE into the US. An example - I had 5 packages that went from Hong Kong - Saudi Arabia - Dubai - London - Los Angeles - Honolulu. This also cost me 2 extra months of transit time and about 300% higher shipping fees. The Chinese government HAS imposed a tax on all outbound PPE from China to the US as well.

    NO, n95 does not mean it filters out 95% of ALL particles. It filters out 95% of particles specifically .3 microns in size. The mask is more effective than 95% for particles both larger AND smaller than .3 microns... larger particles because of size and smaller particles because of how they move. Particles .3 microns in size are the hardest to filter out; thus, this particle size is used for testing standards.

    Interestingly, N95 masks were avoided during the start of the pandemic in South Korea because it isn't tested against liquid-vapor. (More specifically parrafin oil) This means N95 may not be able to stop viruses in aerosol, which is counterintuitive as covid-19 has been found to spread quite well through air.
    During the Sars pandemic back in 2015, the government used N95 certifications for medical ppe, pissing off a lot of medical workers. The KF94 specification is an equivalet in terms of filtering particles while also resistant to aerosol.

      I remember it differently.... I remember the WHO chastised the US for wanting to shutdown flights out of China.
      I remember the US wanting to isolate them, and the WHO accused the US of over reacting.

      say, remember when everyone was cursing out the goverment for "overreacting" when this started. and remember when the world then screamed at them for making it a big deal because china "has it all sorted out"?
      and in order not to have a "pre-planned solution" is to have known this specific outbreak was going to happen.
      also whats with your weird fear of not using plurals?

    I still can’t get a N95 mask easily or cheaply. $7 for a $1 mask $23 for a respirator N95 with Valve. We’re still not producing enough. And lots of price gouging today June 23, 2020.
