Micah gets his blood drawn by the best phlebotomist ever!

- Micah is 6 years old and and he doesn’t shed a tear!
We had the best phlebotomist. She was so patient with Micah, did such a great job of explaining every step and made him feel calm and relaxed while she drew his blood. For those who are asking. Micah was gettin his blood drawn to test for celiac disease. Came back negative. His dad is a nurse and so all of our kids have been fascinated with anything medical, and he's done a good job at making our kids comfortable with going to the doctor and helping them understand why its important. Also, I was filming this with permission from the phlebotomist to show his daddy and our family how brave he was. Micah especially wanted to be able to show his older siblings too. If you want a tip for helping your child to be more comfortable with getting a shot or their blood drawn, make sure to explain the WHY behind it. I find that when kids understand why they need to get something done, often times they are more compliant. Good Luck everyone! Be brave like Micah and it will be over before you know it! You know that kid wanted to cry for a second there, but he was so brave. I love nurses that treat kids like they are important; and I love nurses who teach you what's going on. My dad had a nurse that taught me all about his machines while he was still under after his bypass surgery. She didn't have to do that.

SOS SMALLY on the contrary. I'm saying it because kids are treated like animated objects, based on personal experience as a child and parent. The doctors and nurses talk to the parents, they don't explain to the kids what's happening to their own bodies. I get that they don't want to scare the kids, but information is the best remedy of fear (but not too much info...ignorance is also bliss. LOL)

Same for me. I'm thirteen and I almost had a n anxiety attack. I was in tears and mom made me look at her and I didn't feel a thing. Though, I almost passed out after it was over.

I love the fact that she’s telling him the real words for everything and explaining everything to him not just baby talking him or assuming he doesn’t want to know how it works. The more you know the less you’re afraid and I think she did a great job

Thank you so much for sharing this! I showed it to my scared 10 y.o. before he went for his blood test and his attitude completely changed after seeing it. I think the fact that 6 y.o. Micah said, "it didn't really hurt" sealed it for my son. He went off bravely to get his test.

Awesome, best of luck to you! Just an FYI, new phlebotomists make around $13/hr to risk your life. I suggest you do a 10 month LPN course. You'll make 2-3 times the money.

@Daniel Sadjadi When is the last time you've seen a physician perform a venous puncture? Phlebotomists risk their lives for every puncture/possible needle stick/HIV/HEP-C. Aside from starting an IV (which MDs NEVER do), access is all needleless. ABGs & central lines are even passed off to PAs. Most EMT/Paramedics in major cities go in to very dangerous situations for minimum wage, wearing body armor (expired/donated from Police Departments). We don't do it for the money to say the least & many are volunteers. Nurses who make $50/hr in the Boston area aren't even allowed to Hoyer patients or slide transfer them from bed to chair. Next time you have to transfer a 675lbs patient from bed to bariatric stretcher, then in to an ambulance, let me know when you blow you back out after stair-chairing them up 3 flights. Tell me how hard you risk you life by pushing a pen.
@Daniel Sadjadi No. CNAs make $13/Hr, same as a new EMT. Nurses often pass off treatments on to CNAs during their ADLs. Rarely do you see a nurse OR doctor provide hands-on patient care. When is the lasts time you administered an enema with digital disempactmnent & cleaned up, or a complete head to toe bed bath? Back to basics. Can you support your entire family on $27K/yr?
God bless her. More health professions need to be like this especially doctors and nurses. May they be more humble. Not all doctors feel entitled, but SOME need to learn to be humble and patient . She even tells when she'll do it. Oh bless her heart.

This was awesome, I hate when nurses lie to their younger patients and tell them they're just going to do a magic trick or something dumb like that and then stick A NEEDLE in them! This phlebotomist was kind but truthful and told the little boy the step by step procedure to help calm him down. I wish my nurses did this when I was younger... Great job!!!

Mc Kenna yes that’s right and Phlebotomist is associated with Medical Technologist. I hope that in the near future all medical staff will be identified individually(pharmacist, med techs, nurses, rad techs, etc.

Incredibly little.... in fact, beginning baggers at a grocery store I once worked at make more per hour than many phlebotomists. Considering that drawing blood is an invasive procedure, and how very important it is to the whole medical process... It's a shame that they are paid so little and actually disrespected by a number of other people in the medical field itself. Great phlebotomists are artists!
Entry $12.00-15 (0-1 year ) Intermediate (1-3 years) $17 Expert $25-30 (5-10 years). Also depending on State, Shift work, or Doctors office. Many, many factors, promotions are Rapid, and depending on if you hold a National certification, or state Certification. Again there are many factors that play a huge roll in pay scales.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video. My son was so scared getting his first blood drawn, we had to give up and get a second appointment to try again. Using your video, we could talk about what was going to happen and how to deal with the specifics that made him scared. Next week, blood drawn no problem. He said he would even do this again.

That nurse is fantastic! She was incredible with that boy! He was so brave! So good! Again, that nurse is the best nurse I have ever seen. That little boy might not be nervous of needles anymore because of her care & patience.
Heads up, they do not teach phlebotomy in LPN or RN school.
+Joyce Malone nurses can be trained in phlebotomy when they're on the job, but not in school. She could be a nurse! I doubt it though since usually a nurse trained in phlebotomy uses those skills in a hospital setting.
@@Nicole3900 Agreed, but we're usually too busy. That's why they hire Medical Assistants in an office setting. That's also how nurses become IV certified, through their facility (also not taught in school).

I am 16, and once I was about to get my blood drawn my heart was beating crazy hard that you could see it. It was beating so hard to the point my mom got mad at me for being so scared of getting my blood drawn.

Omg same my mom got mad at me to and I almost had to get held down and I just couldn’t do it but then I ended up watching a video and it helped so if you have kids and they have to get blood drawn do that it helps keep there minds off the needle

My little boy, 5yo and on the spectrum usually has a full-on fight with everyone when needing a blood test. I showed him this video an hour before we went. He was amazing. No tears, no running away, no fighting. Job done. 🙏💜

I’m here at the suggestion of my daughter’s pediatrician. My daughter is needle phobic. She has a panic attack just seeing them. We need to have blood work done so we are trying to help her get through it. I liked seeing a phlebotomist explaining everything and having him be part of it.
You are an excellent phlebotomist. Made the patient/child feel like he was making decisions throughout the procedure and explained everything in detail so he can understand what was going to happen. Great job. God bless you.

I just got my phlebotomy certificate, this was super informative because our book doesn't have an in-depth explanation on exactly HOW to speak with kids. It says we should do a dress rehearsal and speak with them. Well done!

What a great patient. I had my children tested for lead poisoning. I held my son, but it wasn’t necessary my daughter was a different story but she made it through. No matter how many times I get stuck I’m uncomfortable but I don’t cry. Much

@@allyhuf6303 no problem, and I promise you litterly don't feel it, it's very strange, if you're getting nervous while the blood is getting draw just close your eyes and think of something fun, and imagine yourself doing something you like, and just completely forget you're getting blood drawn, its a very fast and painless process

Clearly has a lot of experience with kids. She does a really good job educating him and helping him understand what's going on. Definitely something they teach you to do before you work with kids in a medical setting. When they understand what's going on it helps alleviate some of their fear. She's really good at being gentle and educating!

This is the first needle procedure I have ever watched that I have been impressed with. It’s amazing what can happen when you take your time over things like this.

Aww, what a brave little boy 😍. My son wouldn't have been able to do that, I used to have to hug him and tell him a story while he got shots or had his blood drawn when he was little.

Beautiful job! She reminds me of myself at work, I’m also a Phlebotomist at Lurie Children’s Hospital, and I use almost every single, patient technique with my patients to successfully get them through their blood draws.. Treats at the end are rewarding.

I had blood drawn when I was 7. The nurse held my arm down, stabbed the needle in my arm, and wondered why I was bawling my eyes out as I bled all over the place on the chair.

WOW! What an amazing addition to the medical community. I wish I had someone like her my first time. They just had four people hold me down and didn't even explain what they were doing. It took me years to recover from that.

He’s only had to get immunizations since then and he’s always been very calm..more so than his older siblings. Just a tough kid. I definitely contribute this success to the amazing phlebotomist being so patient with him! But his dad is a nurse and I think all of our kids, in general, are much more comfortable with doctor visits and medical procedures because of their awesome dad who has always taken the time to explain things and teach them about what he does.
Her hand movements and placements are awesome! Many do not have such steady hand! Bravo!

Nurses, doctors, and really any medical personnel who explain the actual science to kids are the best. kids understand more than you think!! When my dad was sick, one of his nurses explained everything, drew diagrams and answered EVERY question i had, no matter how basic or “silly”. Same thing when i was a kid, one particular nurse just went above and beyond to tell me what was going on.
My nurse was so nice when I was kid! I freakeddddd out but she was super amazing and the pain was barely even there. Slightest pinch and all done. 😍😍

She did great. I have never seen phlebotomy done with a syringe and a butterfly needle however...we use vacationer tubes. Also she spent a long time here. That's nice but not realistic where I work. We get 5 min per patient guide line. She is lucky to either work in a slow environment or be fully staffed where it's ok to give this time to pt
lola buns I think making a child comfortable and educating them would definitely be worth taking the time regardless of a 5 min limit. Have your boss watch you and the impact you have on your patients. This kid and mom will never forget her kindness. World moves too fast. Only way to break the cycle is to stop going along with what is the norm.
Butterfly syringes are used for small fragile veins perfect for elderly people and children (:
