  • After hauling out, we have just one week on the hard to fix everything we broke in Alaska and get ready to set sail south for Mexico. A great weather window is opening up and we don't want to miss it!
    We have heaps to do, most importantly we need to install a new driveline, build a fuel polishing system and change up a bunch of our rigging.
    We hope you join Team Nova on our Patreon page!
    We make an extra full length video each week for our Patrons! (Started 28th Feb 2024)

    We have been on our boat a 1975 Downeaster 38 full time since 2001and we came across most of the problems you are facing. polishing your fuel will not solve the problem of a dirty fuel tank. The growth on the wall of the tank has to be power wash or scrape off. If you don't have an inspection port on your tank now would be the time to put one in it will save you a lots of filters and headache. Happy sailing!

    You should add some 'Shaft Sharks' onto your prop shaft, they have teeth that will cut through any ropes etc that could get wrapped around your props.

    Great episode ..and a roller coaster as usual! Darcy has to be some kind of engineer ? there doesn't seem to be anything he can't fix 👏
    I wasn't aware dirty fuel was such an issue (but do now).
    I would like to know more about how you fixed the crack in the mast!
    Safe travels ! and thank you for teaching me.
    Looking forward to next week's episode 🙌

      We will go over the crack in the mast more, it was an easy fix but could have been bad.
      Darcy is a very handy guy but he does have a secret ... he reads the manual lol, most of the stuff you see him working on he has never done before, if its looking like its to easy its because he has already done it to the other side of the boat some other time lol :-)

    There is almost no wsy to avoid diesel fuel bug. The problem is that fuel will absorb water from the atmosphere. So when the temperature drops at might thay water will condense out into liquid water at the tank bottom. If you have a way to drain water/gunk from the tank regularly this is best. My tanks have a drain, I drain them every two weeks. A deep dip tube and pump will work if you only have top access. The water in metal tanks will also cause corrosion issues in metal tanks if not drained. Obviously this us worse in locations with a large difference in day/night temperature. So keep using the biocide but also make some arrangement to drain the bottom of the tank regularly and dispose of the water and gunk.

    You know, back in the days before locknuts, double nutting was just as good but there was another alternative.
    If you get a center punch and punch where the nut and bolt meet (around the thread) and basically mangle the thread of the bolt, then i cant back out easly. I do 3 or 4 spots around. You can still undo the nut later when you need.
    Congrats on getting what you needed done and back in the water without to much fuss

    When I replaced my cutlass bearing in Australia the yard guy showed me a trick. He left the bearing a little bit long so it protruded from the tube, and drilled a hole in it before he installed it. The hole gives you something to pull on to remove it when the time comes. It only works if you have room (which I think you do). I am not sure I like the sikaflex on the zincs. You will have to scrape it all out to change the zincs later.

    • @sailing.supernova

    If you don’t clean the tanks out properly your problem will come back and bite you on bum until you do the job properly. When you fit new zincs to the shaft when you first tighten the zinc tap it with a hammer all over and the re tighten the bolts, do this a couple of times.
    You will be amazed at how many more turns of bolts you will get .

    Can pull props off & do at anchor (while having a beer), then propspeed. Sailing with the James’s (Au) just did all the research/purchase, pros/cons, for their cat if interested. Recommend spraying all that new metal driveline (+ pretty much anything else) with Lanolin.

    With regards to the fuel, I don't understand why the massive filter wasn't installed in the line between the tank and the motors. Putting the freshly filtered fuel back into the contaminated tank doesn't make sense to me. Great to hear that Australian accent btw Its apparent you two work well together and are a delight to watch, it seems all problems will be conquered. A tip, consider reinforcing the shelf that was installed for the small fridge to sit on. Will be ok in calm water but it's not always calm.

    • @sailing.supernova
      @sailing.supernova  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We wanted to be able to run the fuel polishing system all the time even when the engine was off. So far it is actually doing a really good job of removing all that stuff that came with the dirty fuel we got in Alaska. We have gotten about 3 full cups of crud out of the tank by polishing it when we're sailing. At some point we will hook up the system so we can switch it to supply fuel to the engine as well (like how you've suggested). But unfortunately we have a lot of stuff to do before then lol. The fridge shelf is a bit beefier than it looks on camera but we will keep an eye on it. Thanks very much for all the advice :) Glad you're liking the videos :)

    Really enjoyed your latest video. It's good to see you are taking on board the advice being offered.
    A couple more bits of possibly helpful advice:
    Those fixed 4 blade props of yours are great for motoring but not so great for sailing. They scrub 1 to 2 knots of sailing speed off your boat. A good pair of folding props will make a lot of difference to your sailing progress especially in light winds. The downside is they are expensive and they are more complex. There is another utube couple "sailing with the james's' who have recently installed new folding props. Worth a look if you are interested.
    I noted that you put some rope clutches onto your decks. I may be wrong but I think your boat (Prout 50 Quasar?) has balsa cored decks. If it does you don't want any water leaks into the balsa core as it turns the balsa into mush and weakens your deck. The way to avoid this is to overdrill your bolt holes, fill them with epoxy resin then drill the right size bolt hole through the epoxy resin. This seals off the balsa with an epoxy tube which won't leak even if your sikaflex bonding leaks...which it often does on loaded bolt holes.

    • @sailing.supernova
      @sailing.supernova  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the tips, the best thing about being in real time is we can use all the info people give us, and we need to because we are so new at this!
      We would love folding props, but I don't think its in the budget right now. we are looking for a used set, and if we find a good price we can change them in the water.
      We put some epoxy on the holes we drilled but we are going to go back and over drill them, we ran out of time and had to get it done in time to leave.
      thanks for all the tips, keep them coming if you seen anything else we could improve on :-)

But next time you are in there maybe you can try to figure out if that is right. If it is supposed to rotate but is frozen that could cause a lot of problems I guess.

      We have not used it as much as we thought we would, but when we do we are very happy to have it. I would say it would be better to have a well built cockpit cover then it would be to have a inside helm. If you would like me to go more into why just let me know :-)

    Just because I’m a bit crude, Yvette, was it too cold or were you so excited to get the boat moving back to the water? Best of luck on your journey, fair winds and following seas.

    How do you do this and not mention how much money you are spending.... This “refit" cost more than the boat...

      We were out of the water for just over a week, we did 99% of the work ourselves, the rigging we had help on. We saved a bunch of money by not dropping the mast and also getting everything ready for the rigging guys. We also got great deals on the new parts because we knew where to get them (we did the same work to the port side last year. we also got some used parts. it would have cost 4 times as much if we didn't do the work ourselves
      maybe we should put together a cost video, or like you said just talk about it more in our regular videos :-)

    Hi, theirs lots of ways to put a prop on. They way you did it should be just fine. Putting anti-seize on the shaft would have been preferred. It’s not really necessary to use Loctite and 3200. Your last zinc probably dropped off because it was all used up. Depending how fast that happened you may have some electrical current leaking though the prop-shaft. You may need to look for that. Possibly a bad galvanic isolator (if you have one). I would also recommend that you look on TH-cam to see how split-pins are normally installed on spinning shafts like a prop shafts. I would have liked to see you bend one leg aft and trim the other leg flush. This helps with balance, cyclic flexing and to prevent fouling.
    Have fun,
    Ian

    I know cost is an issue, I know time is an issue, I also know working on clean equipment can be enjoyable. Think about getting some cleaner and paint! Areas like under new shaft seal can be cleaned and painted. May be not the whole area, just where you worked at first. It will motivate you to do it all, a little at a time. Make it a practice to never put bare metal back on(paint it), and clean and paint the rusty metal where you have worked. At the rate items on a boat fail, you will have a boat that is a joy to work on in no time! It is also easier to inspect clean, painted areas. Rust from bearings show up,etc. I’m just getting ready to start my 40th. year turning a wrench for a living.

    Darcy - that steering set up is poorly designed mate - the ram should be attaching ON TOP of the quadrant, and then you should always install your fastener with the head at the top - so in the event that you do lose the nut (which should be a Nylock in that application), you still have the bolt through the ram and quadrant - and gravity saves you... Cheers from Australia!

    • @sailing.supernova
      @sailing.supernova  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it is poorly designed, unfortunately I can't fix it without some pretty major work. Right now there is blue locktight and a double nut. We inspect it every 15 minutes while underway and when Darcy has a bit more time he is going to put a pin in it so it can't back out even if everything else fails. Definitely some great advice though, keep it coming. Us Aussies have to stick together :)

    👍👌👏 I simply have to mention that I absolutely love 💚 how you say moda, woda and filta (for motor, water and filter). It sounds sooo cute. 2) What? A man reading the/an instruction manual? And even before installing the device? I've never heard of such a weird behaviour. 😁 ;-)

      👍👌👏 That's nice! I love to be the reason that people have fun. 2) It's a kind of running gag (but with serious background) all over the world. Real men don't need instruction manuals respectively don't read manuals. But after several hours doing unsuccessful attempts and after everybody else (= witnesses) went to bed, most men read instructions at last. 😁 ;-) Please, Ivette, never lose your wonderful accent. It's part of your great and positive personality.

    Everyone complains that its so expensive to rebuild a boat. It is when you pay someone to do it. But when you do everything yourself its not that bad plus you really get to know your boat because you've laid your hand on just about everything. I'm almost done with my Prout Snowgoose 37
