BMX Is Missing Something Right Now....

  • Shop stops and skatepark/street meet ups are something that could genuinely help all of BMX as well as companies and riders who host them.
    There's no getting around the fact that BMX is struggling and with that struggle has come less events like shop stops or skatepark meet ups with pro riders/teams. In my eyes, this is the time when these types of events can make the most difference. There is just nothing better than a real in person interaction with someone you look up to and these types of events are a perfect way to create those moments.
    I really believe that nothing but positives will come from BMX reintroducing shop stops and skatepark meetups.
    In this video I go super in depth on exploring the topic and I would love to hear your thoughts on it in the comments!

    Dude! You rock! I'm almost 50 and a few days ago I felt that I was missing something in my life. I stumbled across one of your videos and another and another and so on and I knew exactly what i was missing. BMX! So now I have a Tech Bike Co Trident frame on its way from Albies! Nothing gets me more stoked than a local meetup or jam. Nothing on the internet can even remotely compared to being in "meat space" with other BMXers. Flatland is missing from the Olympics! New school flatland needs more exposure. Flatland doesn't have the disconnect you were talking about though. Which is good. We're all in a small venue & approaching pros is pretty easy.

    Brant. I see it like this. I've been involved in BMX since 1980. I raced for over a decade and freestyled for about 5 years. In that time I never mad it "Big". I got close so I was was sought of looked up to by the younger up and coming riders and the big boys were definitely aware of me. So what I tried to do was make everyone accessible to everyone. If younger kids wanted to meet the pros I had enough clout to make it happen. Of course some said "No way", due to their eletist attitudes, but that was there loss in two ways. The young kids thought they were snobs and the pros lost the respect of those kids. It's about all being involved at all levels. How often do you see some beginner at the skate park or wherever not participating for fear of being laughed at for their lack of ability. When all it would take is for one of the better riders to give encouragement to the beginner. After all, we were all beginners once.

    I will atleast say that since last year my first compition in 35 years and the subsequent contest stops since the pros have been extremely accessible. I mean during a comp there is a time to let them do there thing. I was part of the team that put on the abfl vegas comp and all of the pros were fantastic. I do hope we all can come together and continue to grow flatland and bmx in general. It wasn't until after the battleground comp that 8 realized who you were. I thought you looked familiar. Congrats on your win. That vibe is what we all should strive to replicate. How incredible was that!!! Possible Midwest contest in wisconsin next year. Please contact me with any input. Let's grow this!!

    We had some pros filming in my tiny little city and they didn't even make a public appearance. They even got the local bike shop to let them in after hours so they wouldn't be bothered by the public. It was a pretty crappy look once the locals starting talking about it. This is part of the reason I love the little BMX community you're creating and how approachable everyone has been in your discord.

    • @jancannoodt
      @jancannoodt วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m assuming they only had a few days to film and wanted to keep it low-key, thus more efficient.
      Letting locals know you’re in town can have adverse effects to the overal productivity if you’re out there to film a video - especially as a “pro” rider

    • @Brant_Moore
      @Brant_Moore  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Fair point to consider. Might have backfired or had unintended consequences though in the eyes of the locals and bad experiences travel far via word of mouth.
      It'll never happen but I would be absolutely fascinated to see results of a research experiment on focusing money on trips / trip videos vs only money into traveling to meet up at different bike shops/skateparks with whatever videos that can happen through that and how each would affect sales.
      My gut wants to say that shop stops and meetups would have to yield better results..but then considering how many views some of the trip videos get..it's interesting.
      I think a solution is somewhere in the middle.

      Funny, my country doesn't have many riders that you can consider "pros", but then Dennis McCoy comes around to our local skatepark, and Tony Hawk just arrived a couple months in another city lmao. It was very surreal.

      @@jancannoodt That wasn't the case. They were around for a few weeks. It gets worse when you consider there was already a Halloween Jam planned they could have just shown up to to ride, but they didn't, even though the shop they were using after-hours was a sponsor. It turned into a whole thing with our only 2 core BMX shops refusing to stock parts from their frame sponsor to this day because the local riders threatened to boycott them.

    This last weekend was at COR freestyle Olympic park. Met Nyquist, Dubby, Jacob Theim, Leigh Ramsdell, Josh Hult, Berringer, Aitken just to name a few. The vibes were awesome and got to ride the Olympic training course.
    But talking with the homies and we were amazed at how little the turn out was. The amount of locals who weren't there was what we noticed. It's a national level event, on a world class course with maybe 100 people there.

    i'm 49 and i grew up a few miles away from albe's. saw my first skate demo / competition there in 1987. saw my first BMX demo , the haro team, a year before that at a schwinn shop across the street from my house. there was extensive bike trails in the woods in my neighborhood as well as a massive dirt track with a huge berm, huge down hills, camel humps, jumps. those were the days. hard to believe it was real tbh. from 5-10 years old all i had was a cruiser that weighed 1000 pounds but it didn't stop me from ripping all that shit up. then i got a garage sale BMX and eventually a dyno d-tour in 87 which was sadly stolen in 1991. i've been riding a road bike since then but this year i've decided to buy a new school BMX and ride it in the trails near my new house. there are also 3 nearby BMX pump and racing tracks. i found a subrosa letum for $300 and i'm picking it up on saturday. my wife is scared but i am dying to get riding!

    what really makes me sad is that most of shops (where I live, in France) stopped sales of most of skatepark practices. it's basically impossible to buy rollers, skateboards and BMX and we must do all over the internet... this means that if I want to encourage my nephew to start and try bmx in a shop it's impossible.

    I think for the most part local shops need to put in the work and hype it up to cultivate a good local scene. After that happens pro's will not only show up but it will produce top caliber riders. I rode my city when bmx was dead. Mid to late 90s. I had always rode. A handful of us did. When a bmx specific shop opened I helped with setting up jams and showing them spots. They then brought in guys like Chris silva and others from toronto. 2009 to 2012 was liit. Mike Varga is a part of what came from what we had going on at the time. Everyone supported each other.
    Big ups blackpony bmx.

    Insta clips should’ve never been the main way to digest bmx, it should be the preview I understand it’s the easy way and the way the world has been going but there should be more video showings at shops and parks or even the local venues wether or not it’s your locals or friends, there needs to be more hype around what’s going on in the scene as a whole. Imagine if you could get people who aren’t die hard bmxers into it more like any other sports, you’ve got every bar in the area hyped and packed for a football team that’s very bad but not very many people actually play ball.

    BMX is good, but it can definitely be better in terms of access in areas that are rural and even suburban. I'm starting to become a fan of pump tracks now too. I wish there was a way to integrate obstacles into regular parks so it's not just a massive skatepark needing to be built. Sadly nobody will want to put an obstacle near pedestrians. Another thing a park near me did, they basically put in a concrete pad, called it a skatepark and presumably people will just build or bring in what they want on there. Haven't figured it out yet but I think that's a good way to do it.

    Would be cool to see BMX celebs in person maybe demonstrating there Riding somewhere!

    Kids riding around the streets jumping random dangerous stuff is near dead. Parents are too protective and they all want a surron type bike anyway. Events are cool but that’s pretty niche and location dependent.

    • @Brant_Moore
      @Brant_Moore  วันที่ผ่านมา

      This subject isn't focused on getting brand new people into BMX as much as it's focused on making the ones who are already there more stoked.
      The location dependent thing is exactly why shop stops need to happen. Not everyone can get to a bigger event. If riders are going to a random shop or skatepark in a random town because they're passing through on a trip, people will get a chance to ride with those riders when they might never get a chance otherwise.

    The thing that bmx is missing the most in my opinion is a scoring system in competitions designed by the riders that rewards execution. I'm tired of counting barspins and whips. Style is being sacrificed for min-maxing.

      You’re definitely onto something.
      I’ve said for years that the judging format for contests is what has turned bmx park contests basically into figure skating. You have to be perfect and being perfect comes at a cost.
      I think there’s a format where if there’s 5 judges each of them looks at a very specific thing and that’s all they judge. Like smoothness, amplitude, trick selection, course usage, and execution. Then all of those scores are combined to make a final score that is 100% based on very specific judging of individual aspects all brought together
