  • It is no secret that FuelTech engine management systems are used on some of the wildest and craziest vehicles in the world, including NHRA world championship racecars. Recently, the team at the Ball Ground, Georgia facility worked with one of the most unique vehicles to ever be bolted to the in-house Mainline hub dyno-a Super Stock pulling tractor from GALOT Motorsports. FuelTech’s Technical Director Luis De Leon walks you through the intricate workings of this unique and extremely powerful pulling tractor combination.
    The body remains largely stock appearing but under it resides a 650ci six-cylinder engine that uses a DT466 engine block out of a school bus and is topped with a billet cylinder head featuring HEMI style combustion chambers. There are three Harts Turbochargers, which are run in a compound format and produce as much as 120 psi of boost. As if that isn’t cool enough, they dumped the diesel fuel in favor of straight methanol. Cutting right to it, the powerplant maxed the torque output of the Mainline dyno at just 50 psi of boost!
    The GALOT Motorsports tractor has been outfitted with a FuelTech package that is similar to Pro Mod racecars, which begins with a FuelTech FT600 engine management system to help control the insanely powerful six-cylinder combination. The all-in-one ECU is a valuable tool in the high stakes pulling game, especially when big money is on the line. The FT600 along with the other PowerFT ECUs-FT550, FT550LITE, and FT450-offer sequential injection and ignition, O2 Closed Loop, data logger, delay box, Boost Controller, Nitrous Controller, and so much more. The FT600, FT550, and FT450 have a customizable digital display for the driver and the anti-glare TFT touchscreen offers the ability to make adjustments to the tune without hooking up to a PC computer.
    Life begins at 100 psi in the compound boost game, making the ignition system a critical component. The team went right to the top with a FTSPARK EXTREME, which is the most powerful ignition system on the market-even more powerful than single and dual magneto ignition systems. It produces a minimum of 1,500mj and has a maximum rating of 1,700mj, that is a guaranteed 250% greater output than the FTSPARK Gen I. It will also provide 175 amps of current at the primary coil (40 percent increase over FTSPARK Gen I). The FTSPARK Extreme box features four channels, requiring two ignition boxes for eight cylinder engines (sold separately), a set of ignition coils, and a plug kit.
    Data is a very important element in keeping the rowdy in-line six performing at its peak and the FT600 data logs dozens of channels. One of the components that helps gather data is a FuelTech EGT-4 CAN module.

    Aos brasileiros: Um bloco de 6 cilindros que era um diesel típico de caminhão ou no caso ao que parece ônibus escolar. Foi convertido ao álcool (metanol), e tem virabrequim, bielas e etc, tudo billet em alumínio, cabeça de pistão em formato Hemi (hemisférico tipo os dodge), ou seja, todas as peças internas custom esculpidas em CNC a partir de um bloco inteiro. Tem 3 turbos em formato compound. pressão típica de 110 pounds de pressão (pelo que eu entendi), o que daria algo em torno de 7.58 kg de turbo no total. Controlado por uma FT 600. O acelerador é naquele controle na direita (tipo o freio de mao de drift) e nao no pé. O sistema de direcionamento é parecido com trator de fazenda pelo falado. Tem embreagem multidisco com 4 discos. Gira uns 7500 RPM max pelo falado.
    Sistema de ignição usando componentes Fueltech, e pelo falado um setup semelhante aos carros de Drag que a Fueltech cuida. a redução final é de 17:1 na traseira (deve estar falando da relação do diferencial).

      Acho foda que eles não divulgam a potência da maioria dos carros.
      Tem vários carros blower que eles passam no dyno e não mostram... Só alguns turbo...

    What makes these pull tractors even more extreme to me is they have to make those giant horsepower and torque numbers not just for 3 or 6 seconds but for up to 20 seconds or when ever the sled stops

      And with a ton of stress on the drive line. In drag racing your biggest stress on the drive line is during the launch launch, after that it's not so bad but with these it's the whole damn run.

      The true horsepower and torque specs may never be known because no equipment exists that could check it. Similar to top fuel dragsters and funny cars that are estimated at 11000 horsepower. It's almost unbelievable that those engines stay together at all.

    A lot of our Drilling Rigs have DT internationals . They get ran into the litteral Dirt . Some of the coldest starts , longest hours with little to no maintenance because down time cost money . Very very good engine . These engines have blown my mind when it comes to reliability in the field .

    My great uncle does 2wd truck pulling with a Chevy based alcohol motor. Don't get me wrong it's cool what a normal truck can do, but the top class guys are on a whole different level.

    Resumão: Usa um motor International (acho que é navistar) diesel de um ônibus de 10 litros. O motor foi convertido a metanol e roda com 3 turbos compound (dois menores enchem um gigantesco). Na pista eles rodam com até 7,5kg de pressão de turbo mas pela limitação do dino a puxada foi com "só" 3,5kg. A pilotagem é parecida com trator convencional: acelerador na mão e dois pedais de freio do lado direito (um pra cada roda traseira), é por onde se "dirige" na hora do arrasto.

      Eu já pensei una vez nessa ideia de converter um motor de caminhão para gasolina já que eles geralmente são enormes e aguentam algo absurdo de taxa de compressão junto com pressão
      Pelo jeito não é só eu que tenho ideias assim kkkk

    so a diesel block to handle extreme boost with alcohol is the way to go if you want it to survive all those pulls? or is it more because a billet block is so expensive and they can use the extra weight of the iron block to wheelie less?

      Basicamente: usa 8 kg de pressão, era a diesel, foi convertido pra álcool ( talvez o E85) o motor era de um ônibus escolar de 650 polegadas, cerca de 10 litros . Compound com três turbinas pra chegar nessa pressão. O motor vira muito pelo tamanho que é: 6500 rpm

    Saw this team win in pintops NC. Back in later 2010's had two full pulls and won by a pull off with added weights. They almost hit the barrier at the other end of the track.

    I swear I saw somewhere when running a compound turbo setup you actually use the big turbo to spool one or two smaller ones. Kiss seems ass backwards unless they were mistaking.

    well yeah its going to max out the torque on a hub dyno with a 30:1 reduction. without the wheels on having a ~30" radius/12" would give you ~2.5X less wheel torque

    Please please PLEASE ask more questions about the engine! What did he do to the diesel compression ratio? What's the final drive ratio? Why did he take a diesel block and convert it to methanol? What was that conversion like? You guys are **engine** people, but you always glance over that stuff in these videos.

    He is holding that tractor back, It maybe goes 40% by the sound of it. When he start to make boost you can hear it he lifts of. He did not full send it. Not even close. He will tear the dyno to dust. search for:
    John Deere Prostock in hub dyno for the first time at 1,15 that is how it should sound turbo all the way.

      We run a pro stock tractor. Single turbo limited to diesel fuel and our compressor wheel is over 6 inches....

    I'm sure that the bent axle is probably destroying the dyno. That definitely can't be good for it.

    So, was this motor which I'm sure is greatly altered/enhanced from the original powerplant it was based from (school bus engine).. Was this engine originally a diesel converted to spark-ignition (for methonol)?

    That thing leaves at 7000rpm and makes over 10,000 pound feet of torque.
    isn't that like 13,000 horsepower? and on half the boost they normally run?

    If I had the money!! LoL I would buy one of the cool ass cab over big trucks as a roller that they race in Europe or wherever on road course's or a old single axle Peterbilt or Kenworth and drop it off at a shop basically give them a blank check tellem I want to drag race do massive burnouts, try to drift and play around on the street with it! I would have a combo simmalr to this built except turned down a little bit with water jackets in the block and head keep it on methanol figure out who makes a automatic trans with a trans brake I have no idea if anyone makes anything like that but in my opinion that would be one of the coolest hotrod's on earth! Imagine pulling up beside it at a red light and proceed to get gapped by a big truck!

    It shows the dyno screen topping out at over 10,000 ft/lbs!!!!
    Since horsepower is calculated by using torque and rpm, somebody could figure out what kind of power it made.

      Originalmente sim, motor diesel usado em caminhoes e onibus. Mas eles converteram pra metanol usando o bloco do motor a diesel.

      I live around him, stopped in a few times asking if he's hiring... I'm very qualified and obviously interested... he or his crew were not the nicest guys I've ever met, as a single parent I needed extra cash so I picked up a PT job working weekends at a local gas station. Every time brent came in he had the typical too good to even say hi attitude. Hate to break your heart bud but locally he's a known douche bag... now I build custom semi's that start at $600k and after being there 3 years ive become production lead :)

    I think that engine is +/-466CI, not 650 CI.

    Sempre quis saber a potência desses monstros, já até vi uns que são movidos a turbina de avião, outros com 3' 4 motores.
