- My dog Drea, at the Newport Beach dog beach, playing in the water when she finds a new seal pup friend. Drea barks at and chases the seal through the waves. The dog learns she's not as good in the water as her new friend, the seal pup.

@@Vita_Voitane that’s interesting, because in my language and also in German, translated they’re called sea dogs 😁😊. However in my language we also have another word for them which is basically is guess designated for them and it has no meaning similar to any of those words 😊😁

I've actually seen this happen off a Monterey Bay beach between a seal and a Labrador. Hilarious. The Lab was a true water dog as best he could be, would swim after the seal, barking. The seal sort of laughed at him. He could literally swim rings around the dog and did.

There are lots of them in the North Sea. And we even have sanctuaries for those puppies who lost their mum.

@@sayadiyeojhenries.815 it already swam away. From what I saw, the seal concluded the thing(dog) was slow and realized having a change to observe it. It does not have to be necessarily scared too much to swim away by not looking back

In Arabic, seals (and sea lions) are called "dogs of the sea".
I did not know that. It’s the same in Indonesian, they are known as anjing (dog) laut (sea)
Same in Hebrew.
In Dutch, seals are called zeehonden (seadogs).

Uhm, I'll have you know I have a pokémon master's degree in sealology, and these vicious predators that are used to dodging sharks become utterly terrified whenever a land animal starts incompetently flopping around in the water. It is absolutely unnatural for animals to meet other animals, especially of other species, it never happens in nature.
You’re right. The sea lion was clearly curious and/or wanted to play because it kept circling back. I do wonder where it’s mother was though. It’s awfully young and there’s been a lot of sea lion and seal pups that are abandoned out in CA because the mothers can’t feed them, and sometimes they’ll seek out humans (not sure why). Hopefully that wasn’t the case here.

I've worked with seals. This pup was trying to get up on the beach, that's why it wouldn't leave the shoreline. You should always have your dog on a leash and keep it away from seals/sea lions especially. People bring dogs around seals way too much and it's one of our pet peeves in marine mammal rescue/rehab.

I'm seeing nothing to indicate the dog is "playing' , more like he wants to dominate something thats new to him. I've seen videos where the dog's wagging away and smiling and the seal's responding in kind. Here its more like the seal is friendlier, but when the dog bounds up and down, the seal mimics him just to show him that hes far more skilled than the dog is, and that the dog should drop the tough guy attitude.
Someone smart in this sea of dumbasses. You actually know dog behaviour.

@@barnacleboy4423 or its trying to reach the beach before reaching exhaustion, seeking refuge from a predator or attempting to regroup with a colony. definitely seemed like one way play that shouldn't be allowed to go on for an extended period of time. Also if the seal decided to bite playfully or otherwise the likelihood for serious infection for the dog would be extremely high.

That's not a seal...that's a sea lion. Sea Lions have visible ear lobes/flaps.

I think the friendship was one-sided, as the seal/sea lion doesn't try to engage the dog, but instead moves away from her whenever the dog gets close (seen most obviously when the dog gets close and barks in her face and she turns abruptly and speeds away). Still very interesting to see though.
I wondered if the sea lion was trying to lure the dog out far enough that it would be easily drowned.
Nah you can see it at the end - the sea lion starts imitating the dog hopping through the water and moving at the same speed as the dog.

So that’s a sea lion not a seal. Slightly different. Sea lions have external ear snubs and can move on all fours rather than slugging along like seals do.

Little seal playing hard to get. Love this.
Here in NZ you'd be looking at the possibility of a major fine for allowing a dog to do that. Marine mammals are protected by law and many are attacked by dogs when they come to land to rest, when they're often hungry and exhausted and can't defend themselves. This cute and has a happy ending, so not intending a full on lecture, but this puts both animals at risk. If the seal pup's mum had been around this dog might have been in real danger, and vice versa for the seal pup if the dog had a high prey drive (and that's something that can take owners by surprise when it erupts)

Yeah, I love dogs and spent huge amount of time with them, with many different dogs and this dog seem to me aggressive, too. People just want to say "awww how cute and fun. Why we all are in peace like them???" etc by seeing like that, I think.
From what I saw: The seal didn't play, just observed the dog due to the curiosity and the dog didn't play, just tried to catch the Seal due to the curiosity. I don't see they are enjoying, at least because of they are playing...
That dog is not aggressive. Those don’t sound like angry barks to me. I think it’s mostly curious. Probably a bit protective not letting the sea lion get too close to the owner.

It's a young sea lion trying to get back to the beach. The dog is frightening it away.
