Could you provide any insight to replacing the motor with the pump on the car? I assume you go in from the wheel well and go from there. Also, what tool did you use to remove the pins from the connector?
After replacing the motor, the car does not start and has the yellow cog light. Is there anything else that needs to be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi to you! Thinking stumbling upon you a good omen... my first job was with a company called Burkhardt Co, loved that place. Anyway, i have determined that my SMG Pump Motor is failed. Mine is from an o4 M3, low miles, unmoded, babied honestly, and i've done most of the maintaining myself... this job does make me a bit nervous, though i have fair to good mechanical abilities and a decent level of patience, tools, and space. Also have a 3rd car, so i can do this slowly if needed. Is this something that the average home-garage mechanic can tackle? My local shop is not keen to do this job unless they buy OEM parts and i'm not looking to do that. Also, Best from top or drivers wheel well/bottom? Or... by asking that question, best to push car into an open dirt log and light it on fire and save myself the frustration... (and hey, thank you for whatever response you provide).
Thank you for your comment. We recommend to do this job from the bottom. You have less place to work, but it is much faster, so this is the way we do it in workshop. The job could be also done from a motivated non mechanic:) If you have further questions please feel free to contact us via mail. Regards
@ any special tools I should grab or any weird things that will pop up? Car is absolutely stock, and from look of your video it looks so easy. Am I missing something. And thank you for the reply. Was really disappointed when my local shop was not interested in installing for me. Is that something you encounter a lot of also, can you help to make sure I buy the right kit. I can provide whatever info you need to insure that, and do want the kit with sensor, relay, fuse, and all the other tidbits. And again, thank you!
I don‘t think it’s a big deal if you also buy the connector release tool. A diagnostic tool is also important if you change the hydraulic oil (which we highly recommend).
Hello, after reinstall the motor I tried to bleed the system with inpa tool. Whole adaptation goes well but when I changing the gears system do a very noisy things, same type of the noise as the eletric motor but much louder. Inpa says error number 59. Do you know how can I solve it please? I will try to record the video with that noise.
B Souza Hi Bill thank you very much for your message. If you like to change your hydraulic oil you can uninstall the smg relay (the salmon colored one) to be sure that the e-motor does not start to run. Then you can suck out the oil with a large syringe from the reservoir in the motor bay. Try to get out about 300-400ml from the old oil. You can also uninstall the hydraulic line from the clutch cylinder. Then please reinstall the relay for a short time to catch the oil which comes out of the opened line (maybe you need a software like INPA to activate the solenoid of the clutch). Be careful - the hydraulic pump must not run try. After filling in the new oil start the bleeding routine of the diagnostic software (for example INPA). Kind Regards
Dear Dan, thank you very much for your request. Easiest way to replace the motor is from above "engine bay side" you find the release tool for the pins in our shop. www.burkhart-engineering.com do not hesitate to ask if you have further questions. Best regards Thomas
+Burkhart Engineering Thanks for responding! I would have thought it would be easier from the wheel well with the pump motor being at the bottom of the pump. Any other helpful tips? Thanks again!
+Dan Sutherland Dear Dan, it's also possible from the wheel but easier from above. Don't forget to pull the SMG relais before or just disconnect the batterie. Good luck and best regards from Germany
I have a question. I replaced the motor under the car. When i took the old motor off, the center piece that goes in the pump (I would say the female connection where the motor sits) came off. Is that normal, or is it broken? I just put it right back and then installed the motor. This center piece is seen on the video @ 2:41 The motor seems to be priming, but it has low pressure. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated!
Hello Eddie. The adapter or female connection is only loosely fastened and not broken. For your problem with the pressure please send us an email to: info@burkhart-engineering.com. Best regards Johannes
Have the assembly on the bench now. When i try pulling the motor off the pump it is resisting with a springy sort of feel. It is separated somewhat but when i try to pry it further it feels like something is holding it. Feels like brushes hanging up on worn commutator..wierd. maybe the bearing is stuck in the pump. Anyway my real problem is that I need a new motor. Does anyone know where i can get a good one for a decent price?
+jack b Hi Jack you can buy the motor on our website: burkhart-engineering.com/54160 Please feel free to ask if you need further information. Regards Thomas
