Correction, it arrived on April 1st of 2020! I still wasn't ready to believe it haha.
On the "Laura only being a little more powerful" bit, I always kind of just chalked RPG mechanics, stats and numbers up to gameplay specific elements, and the characters real power is more or less what they say it is. Ludonarrative dissonance gets messy with stats if we consider them as legitimate canon power indicators, especially in games where you can grind.
Really enjoyed this video Alex! The focus on characters really makes it stand out and I think it will resonate a lot with what the fans want to know.
Absolutely agree to your point about Ludonarrative Dissonance. I just found it odd that for some reason, even though the previous games seem to have considered that, CS3 didn’t somehow. That made me think the design choice to not scale the stats too much is a more conscious decision specific to 3. In 4, at least they have a good reason why the scaling isn’t that high.

I just beat CS IV today after 141 hours, got the true ending and tears were shed. Loved every minute of the game and very much looking forward to Hajimari and the Calvard arc now
I'm really pleased you enjoyed this. It seems as though the rest of the community doesn't share in yours and my sentiment, but I've always taken the series for what it is and tried not to compare it to anything else out there. There's a charm that's built into the series that's beside everyone's expectations, and I'm really happy that I've been part of the ride since then! Onward to Hajimari!
I just got the platinum trophy on CSIII after 135 hours. Very much looking forward to CSIV and seeing the closing of this saga. About CSIII...Le Guin is off the rails. Every moment with her, even the little ones, was awesome.

Dope video and I loved the breakdown.... I unfortunately started at cold steel 1 and played up to CS4... I just beat it a few days ago. I wanna play the other games. I only played the legend of heroes tears of vermillion outside of these and I’m not sure if that has anything to do with any of the videos.
i just finished 4 recently. trails is my favorite game series ever, but there's one thing that annoys me. with all the massive wars and battles going on, somehow nobody ever dies. and when any important character does die, you already know they're not really dead. i just think these games could be so much more impactful if they weren't so determined to have an impossibly low body count in these situations. in any blind playthroughs i've watched, everyone knew olivert, toval, and arseid weren't really dead. then there's alisa's dad who was full blown taken over by the curse but somehow built a backup body for millium. even if that fictional world that was way too farfetched, especially considering they all expected altina to become the sword.
like i said, they are still my favorite games but they could have been significantly better if they weren't so determined to keep every important character alive, and repeatedly try to fake us out by making us believe some did die, making it way too predictable.

@@fluffything7134 Right? My thought is that if you're overwhelmed by how much you have to play in the series now, what makes you think that waiting on starting it up - when we may get 2-3 more games in it - is going to make it any better?! lol
Those who have played AND completed Zero + Azure WILL get a major goosebumps playing CS3 and especially CS4, when the player is visiting Crossbell from human size 3rd person perspective! After so long playing in isometric and super deformed characters.
Man, I just love these games. I'm so thankful for Falcom and the great work they do.

Only wanted to comment on the bit about Old Class 7's power feeling under represented in CS3. While the levels and stats may be close to New Class 7, I thought the devs handled it really well. They regularly pitted New Class 7 against threats more appropriate for novices - intermediate leveled adventurers to handle, while letting almost all of the big fights (Up until late into the game) be handled by old class 7. I thought this was smart, as it let them use one level system for the entire game, without having to have weird moments where Reans level would skyrocket into the 100s purely because he was with OC7. This helped fight pointless number inflation, without actually devaluing OC7's power.
*UPDATE 2:* NISA has confirmed that Sony has finally resolved these download issues! You may now download the game and play it! Enjoy, everyone!
*UPDATE:* Some players who preordered the game digitally are starting to report that they’re finally about to access the game and play it! Will update as soon as I receive official confirmation, but it’s worth checking to see if you’re affected that you’re able to download and play the game right now!
*ORIGINAL:* I wanted to start a thread for folks who are unable to play the game due to digitally preordering it.
Just a few minutes ago, NIS America confirmed that the issue is on Sony’s storefront and that they are waiting for them to return with a solution and are still actively tracking the case, along with an apology for fans who have preordered the game digitally.
I intend to update this pinned post with more information as we hear from them. Thank you for sharing your comments and I’m personally hoping for a speedy resolution to this issue.
Funny that you said that, as some people do contact Sony via chat previously and they give 2 completely different answer. One part says specialist is currently working on it from Sony, and some answers to refer back to NIS for answers. It is just a shame that they did not take it seriously when people reported that the games are not even pre-loaded one day before it is released, and now we have this over 24 hours after the launch and still, pretty much the same in terms of scarcity of info. I am not surprised if in the end, Sony said that NIS is the one at fault and we have to wait for NIS to respond. Typical ping-pong game that already happened. We will see how it ends.
Even some who requested for refund are rejected outright due to the 14 days policy, even when the game is not download and working. Some are lucky enough to get, but not sure if it is due to less than 14 days pre-order period.
All in all, a complete mess of pre-order issues from NISA and Sony.
Jimmy Salim I can only speak from my experience, but I can tell you that acquiring PS4 review keys after a certain point over the past month has been problematic as of late. There’s a couple of games that I requested PS4 keys for, with the publishers telling me that they’re not yet activated, which forced me to change the system I’m reviewing them on. I’m not saying Sony or NISA is in the wrong specifically, but I do find it too coincidental for this problem to be present from a review code standpoint and happening to other publishers as well.
@@BacklogBattle Interesting idea, but for now, it is mere speculation, at least, without any insider info from either Sony or NISA.
I am afraid that we will not get a good picture of what happens, even after all of this is done and over with, seeing how secretive sometimes they are in regards to this kind of issue.
For now, the only thing we can do is to wait....
Jimmy Salim I definitely agree, though the review key activation issues are noteworthy, as this is a thing that hasn’t happened in the 3 years I’ve been reviewing games on here. Can’t help shake the feeling they’re all connected somehow, you know?

Trails of Cold Steel are now in our favorite 5 Japanese rpg francizes: Right there with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Suikoden Games, and the Tales of Series..... was amazing. To anyone reading this to get the emotional connection play them in order and KNOW Trails 1 is 75% world and character building and will be a VERY VERY slow burn.

I can't wait to pair up high-speed high-crit Fie with a high-power high-crit Laura and watch the magic happen again. Seeing those two together is always a pleasure... They're my go-to exterminators and bp generators.
After CS3's ending, CS4 could never come quickly enough. unfortunately, I'm gonna have to wait until at least Friday (payday) before I could play the game...
is there still a relationship mechanic in CS4? I want to ship Laura and Rean again.
Of course there’s still bonding moments and relationships! Why would this game not have it? 😉
And yes, when I had the chance I paired Fie and Laura again. There’s a really cool piece of dialogue that they say when they win battles now too that tells you that the devs know about this pairing haha

07:00 (and several other sections) A correction there: CS4 is _not_ the finale of the series (Legend of Heroes), its 'only' the finale for the CS sub-arc (and not even that with Hajimari now, which is a more proper epilogue), while also being the finale of the first narrative half of the series as a whole.
This series is only about ~60% done and the next game (and beginning of a new arc and second narrative half) Kuro is scheduled for release ~autumm this year in Japan. We still have plenty of mysteries and excitment left in Legend of Heroes!

@@carlosferrazbr Joyjoyland, flame edit. It's pretty good imo. I played goefront's Zero and this version of Azure does a pretty good job. I only noticed a few typos and some poor choice font sizes in some of the menus. It's worth playing now if you can't wait.

You definitely should! It's very rare for a JRPG to have a long, continuous storyline such as Trails!

Yep! People seem to be averaging 95 or so hours, so it’s not much shorter than if you try to do almost everything LOL
I like how CS4 has a chest count. Helps me know that even quite a few hours in I'm still in the beginning... this game looks like it's gonna be long.

it took me 80 to 90 hours to beat CS3, meanwhile im almost 25 hours into CSIV and on Eryn Rest Day 2
is it possible that CSIV could somehow be longer?
FTR I got S ranks in all chapters in CSIII, beat all VM opponents, character notes ETC.
Its hard to fathom this game being longer even with high speed mode but from what I understand from everyone and yourself this is actually true.
I am loving having old and new Class VII available together much more often and im told its basically permanent after the black workshop, not counting the guest characters.

So excited to pick up my copy. I think this is the only thing that can tear me away from my recent FFXIV binge. I'm still holding out hope that they'll get around to localizing Crossbell one of these days... fan translations are all well and good, but they've got all the voices tapped and I'd love to hear 'em proper.
Speaking of voices! If I may ask, how did the VA changes feel to you as someone who really gets invested in the characters? I'm definitely saddened by Laura and Osborne, but I haven't heard much of their performance outside of the brief clips from the trailers NIS released. Do you feel like the changes impacted your enjoyment of the characters? It may be a bit pedantic in the overall scheme, but I admit I got attached to the sound of every character over the three games. It won't stop me from loving the game, I'm sure!
Frankly I didn't really notice any changes in Laura and Osborne's voices, which bodes well! I think whoever they chose for those roles embodied the original actors' performances very well and didn't really impact my enjoyment of it. As you know, there's only a few sections in these games that are voiced, so whatever impact they may have would be minimal at best. I'd say that I was so invested in what was going on that while it probably would be noticeable for anyone looking for these changes, the true star of the show definitely is the game's ongoing plot.

You're going to never want to touch a JRPG again. Please don't do this. Pace yourself. The Kiseki formula isn't built for binges.

@@BacklogBattle Yeah this is from personal experience. LoHs structure has a familiar pattern once you get through enough of them.
The first title in a fresh entry is usually the 40+ prologue which builds the world up, introduces the characters, establish everything. Then the narrative takes you through the region. Then to the end. The second entries narrative almost always takes you through the region again at a more accessible rate, but it's still familiar territory again (See Trails in the Sky and Second Chapter, Zero and AO, and definitely Cold Steel I and II).
The devs assume you're going to be following the series as it comes along with those big stretches of time in between, year to year, year to every other year. So when you play the second entries in the series it feels less like a rehash and a nice return to the built up world.
But when you marathon them??? Whew, it feels like an exhausting asset re-hash-athon.
So yes, don't do it.
I'm playing IV a year after III, and if I had played them back to back like I did I and II, I would feel really fatigued again.

this is gonna be my first trails game.
This game finishes many plot threads started in earlier Cold Steels, so you might find yourself lost. If you don’t intend on playing the previous games, I highly recommend watching summaries of previous games!
I said to myself I'd play through the entire series again when I picked up 3... And then I still haven't played more than an hour of 2 and any of 3... and I'm saying "I'll play through them all starting from 1 when 4 comes out'. Maybe I'll mean it this time. I loved 1 and the couple hours of 2 I played made me realize I didn't recall 1 very well.
At this point, I’d say look up story summaries. There’s no shame in doing so, and I’m sure it’s devs don’t reasonably want anyone to play through its back catalog, though I’m certain the revenue is welcome. Given that it’s a series that’ll keep going for at least another decade, I think it’s best to jump into it sooner than later.

Do you any info on why the pre downloads don't work? Many of us waited, but there is something going wrong because when we click download they send you to the PS Store and then back to the item without downloading. I tried all methods from restarting console to checking the shop to find the item I bought

@@BacklogBattle they have a talented cast for sure, a lotta people noticed the imbalance with 3 and 4 because XSEED had an additional 5000 lines voiced in english for 1 and 2 which is why folks didn't notice it as much there

You hang out with some great people then! I've seen quite a wide array of opinions on this game. Frankly, I'm here for the ride and the enjoyment of being with all these wonderful characters on some of their last times together as a group. It's not perfect, but many enjoyable things don't have to be!
I dont even know why, but i just cant stop playing this series. just to hype myself up, i ran through all 3 games in 1 sitting each 3 days in a row. Well its only playthrough 13 or so. Maybe i should start speedrunning these with the amount i alredy sank into them

This is the last game in the Cold Steel quadrilogy, but not the last in the Trails series! This might sound confusing, but it's an ongoing series spanning all the way back from Trails in the Sky!

It's funny,because I'm currently playing through this game ENDS Yakuza like a dragon which are both MASSIVE games that will likely push the 200-250 hour mark combined, and quantum break and miles Morales which probably won't be longer then 25-30 hours....It is just funny because growing up a "good" RPG was 40 hours, and a "good" action game was less than 10 on the first play through, and able to be knocked out in a single sitting on the second.
Man, things have changed dramatically. Not sure if it's for better or worse, but things have changed.

There’s one other person in the comments who said they were having issues. I’ve heard that Sony’s having a rough time activating codes lately for review. Maybe the issue’s tied to that in some weird way?

@@flixytip4571 I've been keeping an eye out on their Twitter the past few hours and only a scheduled tweet announcing the game's release popped up. I opened up a Community post that I plan to update once I hear anything regarding this, but I also plan on posting an update as a pinned post here should I hear anything additional. I hope they get this settled soon.

Legend of Heroes is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite RPG series out there. RPGs are the very core of me as a gamer. While I love RPGs, not a lot hit me on an emotional level and this series did it in more ways than one. I got emotional after beating CSIV and definitely made the effort of playing through Sky and Zero/Ao worth it

So upset right went to my local gamestop to pick up my preorder only to find out that gamestop had been broken into by looters.i called customer service to see if they could ship it to me or find another store that's available.they started acting like i was one of the looters
That's very unprofessional of them. Is there any way that that Gamestop can transfer your preorder to another nearby store? You DID pay for it, after all.

I have heard that there are some issues with the story (especially for those like me who played only the trails of cold steel saga) but also for long time fans. Also I have heard that the dialogue were edited poorly with words out the dialog boxes or even over written. For the story part, I've seen that coming and I find absurd that Ao No Kiseki (Crossbell arc in case i've written wrongly) is still not even localized in english as it is a canonical part of the saga. It's a very good game, ambitious project but it's really complicated to follow its lore...
Andrea Capone the story issues you mentioned are definitely present in the game, though the text issues might have already been patched on day one. That said, my wife started with the first Cold Steel and having played together, she didn’t feel the need to try and tie the story with any of the previous games. I do feel as though if you love the depth of storytelling in the series that this game might let you down, which is why I just felt it important to enjoy how the story unfolded rather than try and piece together things. I understand that I’m being overly vague due to spoilers, but know that even if you finish this game, not all questions will be answered. However, the conclusion definitely delivers a well deserved finale despite this.
@@BacklogBattle yeah my biggest fear was if I would be able to understand the story finale only with the knowldge of the events of Cold Steel. I'm still playing the 3rd and so far no particular issues with the other arcs and I'm understanding something about the Crossbell one but still they are all connected
Andrea Capone and that’s a valid concern! Thankfully, you shouldn’t have much to be concerned about! If there’s one thing that I appreciate with 3 and 4 is that Falcom knows that the West never got Crossbell, so they’ve tried their best to smooth out these games with that in mind!

If it wasent for the fact that the combat is so damn fun from cold steel 3 I would be groaning at trail chest but the gameplay is fun and the world of cold steel 3 was vast and beautiful so if they carry that over I don't mind searching out these chest and I will admit certain orders like sledge hammer and altina reflect damage orders were broken
Musse's command is completely broken if associated to Chrono Burst on each of your active party members and even the toughest bosses in nightmare mode cannot give a single hit...

I couldn't possibly in good faith recommend the cold steel series without mentioning the word "bloat". There is a metric ton of good stuff in these games but it's undermined by equally copious amounts of banal content that seems to only exist to kill braincells and pad the run time. It should have been two games, not four.
Cold Steel IV is only the end of the Erebonia Arc (Cold Steel Arc) of the Trails Series and not the conclusion of everything.
The next game in line Hajimari no Kiseki (Trails of/from [the] Beginning) is already out in Japan. According to Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo that marks about 60% of the overall story

the game and ending is fantastic, but like CS3 it suffers a bit from forcing the new class 7 on you for too much of the game, the new class 7 except Ash are all annoying.
Why would Jusis, Fie and Laura not learn how to pilot a Knight by CS4? They are combat oriented people who learnt martial skills at a military academy!
