Its amazing how big of an impact naming your horror story monster has. When it was just an unknown shadow, it was creepy and horrific, as soon they mention ningen, I imagine a goofy white head on legs running around.
It's literally a technique of writing horror. That anxiety is intentional on the writers part. There's less fear and anxiety when people are in large groups because then you need either a more powerful big baddie or larger numbers of them to overpower and kill large groups. That and humans are less likely to make stupid mistakes in a group.
When writers make characters do stupid things to advance the story, I always found it lazy writing. The movie Prometheus had so many wtf moments and is a good example of a possible good movie being destroyed bc of the over use of it. It doesn't always mean you have to have large numbers or powerful bad guys, that's just the easy way. The writer must think of clever ways in order to split up. In this story, going back for an old wedding ring wasn't a good enough reason, but it's all the author could come up with. You need reasons that make it where the audience doesn't cringe when they hear the inevitable "let's split up to go faster". Other typical lazy reasons have been a pet running back into a building, or a small 8 year oldish kid going back for a toy. You know people will die going back in to find the kid. It is a rare story that finds this balance, but it's also what separates it from other stories. The little things

But there is one good story that plays with the "imposter" premise well, creepymcpasta has a video of it called "im camping with a group of friends and the girl who went to get firewood is not the same" that story kinda kept me reeling more then of average story
There's a few good artic stories I'd recommend, they're long but enjoyable. The first is All of Our Mistakes Are Never Forgiven ( which has a John Carpenter "The Thing" vibe,) and Humper Monkey ( it's a four to five hour story, but suspenseful and intriguing from the start, the only thing I didn't like and some people may not like are a few racial tactless jokes.) I hope you enjoy them.
This was a fucking phenomenal story this genuinely had me on edge the whole time! And I rarely listen to one that makes me feel the need to comment but this did.

I thought that Darlene was the monster. I mean, it makes sense to me. Don dies on the way to the chopper (Think it said something about him being ripped in half) and Darlene says that supposedly someone cut the gas line. Wouldn't it make more sense if it was Darlene, who killed Don then lied about the helicopters gas line? I mean, fake Don lied about the gun, so idk.
Alot of the time people just want things there way, like the character is portrayed that there is nothing humanoid, but as you said, chimps are very similar to us. But what I think he's meaning him to sound like he's talking about no humanoid demons or beasts.
Something with proportions and body structure like a chimpanzee is "simian" in shape, but not "humanoid". Even the ancestors of humans weren't properly humanoid until they started to walk upright.
It would've been cool had the writer given a number at the end of the story. If he had said 5 in the semi-circle we would know Darling was one and had he said 6 we would know she wasn't. Suspense is cool too though.
This story was really well written, and well read/delivered! I love the small details the author includes about the people. Really gives a good visual of things playing out.
I work all kinds of crazy night hours at a security firm and you would not believe how paranoid those night shift horror stories have made me🤣🤣🤣 i honestly expect to see a creature of some sort around EVERY corner..but if I ever run across a crazy set of RULES, im noping my butt into a career change, IMMEDIATELY!!!🤣

You can see your breath at 50 degrees Frankenstein. Not exactly sure why, but I suspect it has something to do with moisture levels in the air. My thoughts are the drier and colder it is the more likely you will be to see your breath.
the dogs would most likely be able to tell the difference between humans and non humans. the info about her past abusive husband could have been used to check identity somehow. one or some of the dogs should have gone with andrew or anyone other human when they were trying to get around the facility for detection and safety. dogs have better detection skills than humans in a lot of ways. dogs are also loyal and will help defend you from danger.
So if i got this right granted its almsot 3 in the morning when im writing this but Finkle was killed right before the power was cut. After they go huddle up in blanlets and the dogs and stuff then Finkle kills donavon out in the snow after he left the room and comes back to the room to "sleep". Jones goes with andrew the writer and Darlene or Darling whatever her name is goes with Finkle and all of them search for Donavon, Jones gets lost and killed by a fake Donavon after luring her to a sense of safety and andrew meets up with Finkle and Darlene they lock themselves in a room and hear the fake jones pounding on the door. So at this point Andrew and Darlene are the only humans left. Darlene runs out and eventually meets up with fake Donavon and Jones while before that Andrew and Finkle get attacked by Fake donavon after they find him hovering over Jomes body. The reason i think that Darlenes still human at that point is on the hunch that the fakes wont kill their own okay. So Andrew and Finkle meets up with fake jones, donavon and human Darlene they question eachother and eventually narrows it down to jones being a fake. Darlene torches fake jones and it runs out and dies ig. Fake finkle wants to go get his wifes ring but really just wants to drag someone to a grusome end and Andrew takes the bait fake donavon wants to take out the only person who might be able to escape since shes a helecopter pilot. They split up the body of the real finkle is found the fake one attacks Andrew, andrew hurts it and runs finds one of the dogs and runs outside to the helecopter, the dog finds the body of the real Donavon and gets inside the helecopter to be greeted by the real Darlene. Assuming shes still human idk the fake donavon couldve killed her and replaced her or somehow but highly doubted that it lost her in the snow and just went back into the building and later joining the half circle in the snow but idk if the author of this story sees this lmk if i was close cuz this wouldve kept me up all night. -End entry
It gets confusing tho also if the imposters kill each other or not. Also if the story actually doesn’t have any plot holes. Cuz Rly the only two confirmed ppl are that Jones who got burned was an imposter and the narrator Andrew is real. Also when finkle gets killed is he most likely got killed in the start like u said and then the imposter acted like he just discovered the power was cut to gain their trust even tho he probably did it snd Actually also I think dom at the end was real but idk where tf he went at the start of the story that never gets explained but since the gun was actually loaded the dom we see at the end was real and since he was killed walking to the helicopter. That means that if the imposters can hurt each other than Darlene is an imposter at the end of the story but if they can’t hurt each other than Darlene is real and dom rly did get lost in the blizzard which is unlikely tho cuz there’s literally a safety rope but there’s rly no way to tell if she’s real or not at the end because we never saw multiple Darlenes or multiple Andrew’s so there’s no way to know
Also u forgot about how Darlene blow torched the fake donavan but idk why Andrew didn’t die(plot armor) when he was with two imposters at the same time. Also the question of if the imposters can hurt each other or not is key to understanding what happened because the whole thing with donavan is weird cuz it’s never explained where he went but also if they can heal themselves or not because I personally think donavan at the end is real and somehow just showed up again idk but he also mentions that he’s in the military so I think he has to be the real don and then that would have to make Darlene the imposter so Darlene could’ve been killed snd replaced when she and the fake old guy split up together
So from what I understand, the bodies they brought in were fake. That leads me to believe that the creatures don’t have much of a cold resistance and will freeze alive outside. The Donovan outside could’ve been one of the creatures but then again why would it go outside? All I know is Andrew and Darlene are possibly real. It could be the real Donovan dead outside, possibly killed by Darlene or a fake dog. So many possibilities here.
I wish the ending said something about who exactly they saw in the semicircle and actually gave us an ending like they were the only ones not in the circle or he was in the circle with the rest of she was I wanna know more 😂 its too good for that to be the ending.

I work all kinds of crazy night hours at a security firm and you would not believe how paranoid those night shift horror stories have made me🤣🤣🤣 i honestly expect to see a creature of some sort around EVERY corner..but if I ever run across a crazy set of RULES, im noping my butt into a career change, IMMEDIATELY!!!🤣

You can see your breath at 50 degrees Frankenstein. Not exactly sure why, but I suspect it has something to do with moisture levels in the air. My thoughts are the drier and colder it is the more likely you will be to see your breath.

the dogs would most likely be able to tell the difference between humans and non humans. the info about her past abusive husband could have been used to check identity somehow. one or some of the dogs should have gone with andrew or anyone other human when they were trying to get around the facility for detection and safety. dogs have better detection skills than humans in a lot of ways. dogs are also loyal and will help defend you from danger.
Or you could say they have the sixth sense of danger and climate disasters ..

So if i got this right granted its almsot 3 in the morning when im writing this but Finkle was killed right before the power was cut. After they go huddle up in blanlets and the dogs and stuff then Finkle kills donavon out in the snow after he left the room and comes back to the room to "sleep". Jones goes with andrew the writer and Darlene or Darling whatever her name is goes with Finkle and all of them search for Donavon, Jones gets lost and killed by a fake Donavon after luring her to a sense of safety and andrew meets up with Finkle and Darlene they lock themselves in a room and hear the fake jones pounding on the door. So at this point Andrew and Darlene are the only humans left. Darlene runs out and eventually meets up with fake Donavon and Jones while before that Andrew and Finkle get attacked by Fake donavon after they find him hovering over Jomes body. The reason i think that Darlenes still human at that point is on the hunch that the fakes wont kill their own okay. So Andrew and Finkle meets up with fake jones, donavon and human Darlene they question eachother and eventually narrows it down to jones being a fake. Darlene torches fake jones and it runs out and dies ig. Fake finkle wants to go get his wifes ring but really just wants to drag someone to a grusome end and Andrew takes the bait fake donavon wants to take out the only person who might be able to escape since shes a helecopter pilot. They split up the body of the real finkle is found the fake one attacks Andrew, andrew hurts it and runs finds one of the dogs and runs outside to the helecopter, the dog finds the body of the real Donavon and gets inside the helecopter to be greeted by the real Darlene. Assuming shes still human idk the fake donavon couldve killed her and replaced her or somehow but highly doubted that it lost her in the snow and just went back into the building and later joining the half circle in the snow but idk if the author of this story sees this lmk if i was close cuz this wouldve kept me up all night.

It gets confusing tho also if the imposters kill each other or not. Also if the story actually doesn’t have any plot holes. Cuz Rly the only two confirmed ppl are that Jones who got burned was an imposter and the narrator Andrew is real. Also when finkle gets killed is he most likely got killed in the start like u said and then the imposter acted like he just discovered the power was cut to gain their trust even tho he probably did it snd Actually also I think dom at the end was real but idk where tf he went at the start of the story that never gets explained but since the gun was actually loaded the dom we see at the end was real and since he was killed walking to the helicopter. That means that if the imposters can hurt each other than Darlene is an imposter at the end of the story but if they can’t hurt each other than Darlene is real and dom rly did get lost in the blizzard which is unlikely tho cuz there’s literally a safety rope but there’s rly no way to tell if she’s real or not at the end because we never saw multiple Darlenes or multiple Andrew’s so there’s no way to know
Also u forgot about how Darlene blow torched the fake donavan but idk why Andrew didn’t die(plot armor) when he was with two imposters at the same time. Also the question of if the imposters can hurt each other or not is key to understanding what happened because the whole thing with donavan is weird cuz it’s never explained where he went but also if they can heal themselves or not because I personally think donavan at the end is real and somehow just showed up again idk but he also mentions that he’s in the military so I think he has to be the real don and then that would have to make Darlene the imposter so Darlene could’ve been killed snd replaced when she and the fake old guy split up together
So from what I understand, the bodies they brought in were fake. That leads me to believe that the creatures don’t have much of a cold resistance and will freeze alive outside. The Donovan outside could’ve been one of the creatures but then again why would it go outside? All I know is Andrew and Darlene are possibly real. It could be the real Donovan dead outside, possibly killed by Darlene or a fake dog. So many possibilities here.
