    Would all of these hoods be improved by addition of a flexible flap to the bottom front of the hood where the work piece enters the protected blade area? Such a flap would be added near the front wheel on the S-12 and oriented to slope downward and backward so that the leading edge of a workpiece would lift it up, as it does the front roller on the S-12. After the back edge of the workpiece had passed by the flap, it would fall back down to make contact with the top surface of the machine table.

    Nice review! I suggest you get some thumb screws so you don't need to use a screw driver every time you need to change the side covers. Do you know if this unit is available in US? Would this work on other saws, such as a Sawstop table saw?

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I do not know if it is available in the US. I believe this link is to there factory
      harveywoodworking.en.made-in-china.com/productList?username=&pageNumber=1&pageSize=36&viewType=1&isByGroup=1&pageUrlFrom=1&productGroupOrCatId=yerEdImoaYRU&searchKeyword=&searchKeywordSide=&searchKeywordList=&selectedFeaturedType=&selectedSpotlightId=&viewPageSize=36
      I also ask them a question about this unit and they reply it in a week. So try them. I also think this is the place where the sawstop is produce and as far as I can see it it would work. The way that I assembled the unit is not how it suppose to be. It comes with a frame you can attach to your back of the cabinet saw.
      Those thumb screws are a very good idea! But I found out that you do not need the screws to hold the shield in place. There is some kind of clamping meganism that hold it in place. The screws are to secure it, but I do not think it falls out. So if you change it very often, you find a sweet spot between tighten the screws, but allow the shield to go out if you want without untighten the screws. (I do not know if that is correct English :-)
      I still think it is a very nice unit and I use it for 90% of my cuts. Only problem is when you cut smaller then 5 a 6 cm, then there is to little space between fence and guard to guide your wood thru the table saw.
      If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
      Best regards,
      Dennis

    I’ve watched all your videos sir and really look forward to your next one. I am so glad you have started doing an English version because what you have to say is very informative. One thing I’ve noticed about European table saws is the sliding table. Most saws I’ve seen has this feature. Maybe you could do a video on the pros and cons of the sliding table feature. It sure looks like it would be a valuable option to have on a saw.

    Thanks for this review. I bought one of these a year ago and have never got on with it. I find it so big and often gets in my way. I recently took it off my saw and it's currently sat in a corner. Having seen your review I may give it another go, but it's still so so big! I also was surprised to see the name Harvey written on mine (as well as my 254 table saw which was supposed to be Axminster Trade, but came with Harvey written on it)

    I noticed that you have your S12 bolted to your right extension area rather than fixed directly to your saw body. Are there variable options for attaching it lower down and fixed to the body of ANY cabinet-type table saw? I'm looking at purchasing the Laguna Fusion3 and wondered if the S12 would be suitable for it. Thanks for great review.

      Hi Craig,
      Yes the way I did it, is not how it supposed to be. You normally have to attached it at the back to your table saw. I looked at pictures from your table saw (AWESOME, by the way) and I do not know that will fit. If you are form the UK, perhaps you can ask Axminster trade.

    I really like that overhead guard, but wow... $900 + tax + $150 S&H in the states. It costs nearly 1.5x more than my saw did. I'm in the process of making my own... hopefully it will be ceiling mounted, as my shop's height is about 7' and it would eliminate the need for it to attach to the saw/table.
    BTW... edge cuts/trims are the worse and create the most dust. That bubble guard option looks rather good at handling it.

  • @stephendixon8575

    Hey Dennis, really helpful review (even with the awful music between each segment! Ha, ha). Had a look in the Axminster website and I see there are some questions that I still do not have answers to. First, can you confirm what the maximum blade diameter this crown guard can work with? It’s clearly designed for 10 inch blade saws but will it fit a 12 inch saw blade? Also can the curved shield for mitre cuts also be placed on the opposite side (if you have a saw that tilts the blade the opposite way)?
    It’s deceptive how big a difference it is going from a 45mm diameter extraction to 65mm - in fact if you do the maths it’s 78% larger area with a 65mm extraction pipe. You will also get much better extraction and faster air flow if you use the straight sided shield as the internal volume of the crown guard is much smaller. However would be interesting to see if you could adapt it to take a larger diameter extraction, or use flexible hose that is not the corrugated type (as these slow air flow significantly).

      Hi Max,
      I think I know what you are suggesting here! and that is actually a very nice idea. But you have to slide the shields in and there is some kind of locking system. So it is better to tight the screws, but not necessary. I also do not change them that much, but otherwise your idea have some potential. Thanks for your comment

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Richard,
      No shortcomings. It runs smooth and can handle some weight. The only problem I have with the fence. You have to align this fence every time. That is anoying and increase changes of mistakes. But I believe the new fences do not have this problem. Further you can not compare it with a format saw. But it helps definitely when you want to cut bigger and heavier pieces.

      When I bought my table saw, it was in the showroom with this fence and I felt in love with it. It looks Awesome! Of course that is not the best reason to buy something but I just want to have it when I first saw it. It is a nice sliding table/fence but also have some shortcomings. So I do not know if it is worth the extra money over the Axminster trade fence.

    @leehaelters6182 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dennis, I appreciate all you share, not to mention your command of my own language, and I look forward to viewing the rest of your excellent videos. I have a slight concern, though. Your use of gloves on the saw contradicts established wisdom. I can see that you are very careful to use push and hold-down devices in a thoughtful way to keep your fingers well away from the rotating blade, to mitigate risk. Nevertheless, how do you address the idea that with machinery, what might have been an accidental, relatively manageable cut on an ungloved digit could be an order of magnitude worse when a moving part catches glove material and drags your hand into a drastic injury? I imagine that you use gloves with other machines, also, for a variety of understandable reasons. I will appreciate your thoughts.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Lee, the way I think about it, is that these well fitted thin gloves will not run your hand in a saw blade, instead the saw blade will cut through it. Like it will with your fingers. So, this believe, is why it doesn't stop me from using them sometimes. But of course I have no experience with that. So because of your comment I thought to give it some time on the internet and see if I can get some information that proves me wrong. And although I saw a few experiments they were all with thick gloves that I also would not recommend using. I saw one example of someone using a thin glove with a saw stop demonstration and this did not give any sign of drawing in to the saw blade.
      That said. I did not get overwhelming proof that wearing these thin gloves does not draw you hand in a turning machine either. So, thinking about it and saw some injuries that can happen with gloves in general I am glad you give me a moment to think about it. I do not think the benefits are worth the possible risk. So I do not think I will wear them anymore and you certainly won't see me wearing them in future videos because I don't want to give people the impression that it's common to wear them. Thanks for your comment!

      Hooked on Wood Awesome, they’re backordered at the moment but I am trying to buy one for my saw. I see the Suva S91 but this looks better in many ways.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brain, great to see that you interested in this unit and that my review helped more ore less in your process.
      I do not know the Suva, but if I look at it, I think the Harvey S-12 is more flexible than the Suva and construction wise, it really is a very nice unit. (Even the bolts and screws are of very high quality.)
      What I learned from the S-12 (overhead dust extraction) is that the size of the hood matters. I used it first with the 2 flat shields, so not with the hollow shield. I did this because I thought it would improve the suction because of the smaller area of the hood. But it turns out to be otherwise. You need some volume at the other side of your cut. (because that is where the dust will go to) When you have the hollow shield at this side, it stays nicely in the hood and it will suck 90% of the dust.
      I use my table saw on the left side with crosscuts and on the right side with rip cuts, so it is important to have the possibility to get the hollow shield at both sides. The Harvey/Axminster Trade S-12 has this possibility. When I look at the Suva I see that this is fixed and I think that is a disadvantage. Ofcourse I do not change the shield for one cut, but if I make more cuts I like to change it because it makes a lot of difference and I like to keep my shop as clean as possible. The only complain I have is that I wish that the diameter of the pipe was a bit bigger. Because I think that would improve its efficiency even more. That said, the construction with the pipe, and the possibility to swipe it at the side very easily is handy. When I can’t use it, I prefer it out of my way. I can understand that in this construction you do not want a 100cm pipe in front of you all the time.
      I change my mind a lot in the beginning if I really needed a overhad blade guard/dust extraction. I think it cost a lot of money and when I finally decided to buy one I really thought I made the wrong decision because of its size. But now after 5 months of using it I am so glad I have this unit. I hate it when I have to make a cut without it. This is when you remember how effective this unit is in dust extraction. And when you have to make a cut without it, it feels so naked and unsafe that you are more careful when you make these cuts. It feels a lot saver with this unit in its place and that is important because it motivates you even more to use it. You will not find any disadvantage to use is. The only time when I can’t use it, is with rip cuts smaller then 50-60mm, then there is to little space between the hood and fence to push the wood through the table saw.
      If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
      Best regards, Dennis

      @@HookedonWood Thanks for the detailed insights, very much appreciated. I use my table saw in the same way.
