At the time they made this video. No he wasn't in every video game. TLOU and bioshock infinite is what really made his career skyrocket. Especially TLOU.
Solemn Henry I finished it almost a year ago, and it's hands down the best experience in gaming I've ever had, I still get goosebumps talking about it and hearing the music; I just never thought that possible from a video game.
Simon Brooke i finished playing it in early march and still get tingles listening to the music and that ending is just amazing. kinda thinking about replaying it.

when troy baker said '' if you want to be a top actor in video games, wait for me and Nolan North to die'', he is 100% right. theyre both in so many of the same games
During Troy’s definitive play through, he described how Neil told him to get the death scene correct. Neil said something along the lines of “What I have is a broken man, what I need is a broken man but also how he arrived at that point.” Neil is such a solid director. I can’t wait for Pt 2
My favorite part of this whole documentary is the comment about the clickers sounding like Snapple bottle caps and the sound designers were like “Where were you guys months ago??? Stupid stupid stupid!” So cute! Hahahaha! Rewatching this in December 2022, when I FINALLY plucked up the courage to play TLOU-P1 on the PS4 (pro). Both from an artist’s and gamer’s perspective, I truly appreciate all the work NaughtyDog has done. The Uncharted series is one of my absolute favorite game franchises, I’m so glad I finally tried playing TLOU for myself. I’m not really into zombie/undead/infected/gore type games, despite having worked as a nurse and have seen my fair share of “severe injuries”.
I’ve only just recently got a PlayStation after being a PC gamer for so long. For my son for Christmas. After waiting so long to play this game and not watching anything of it on TH-cam. I finished it two days ago. I cannot stop thinking about it, I’ve never had such a visceral experience with a game. It’s even topped dead space for me. Listening to the actors totally get the material is clearly why this worked so well.
PC gamer that will always have a PlayStation sitting alongside as long as Sony keep funding projects and supporting studios like these. They are in competition, they complement each other perfectly.
Just finished this game today, can't stop thinking about, I've never been this obsessed & emotionally attached to a video game ever in my life...this might be the greatest video game I ever played so far & it definitely hits different when playing this game while actually being in quarantine lol
The whole concept of the fungi sprouting out of a human and then just overtaking it is so fascinating. There were times when playing the game that I was just so grossed out by seeing this dead body in the corner completely overtaken by the fungi, and then the walls and ceiling were covered in it. It was both so revolting and yet so interesting at the same time.
(Talking about Troy Baker, Joel) As an actor, you need to have such an objectivity and humility to tell yourself and to a camera "I wanted people to love my acting on that scene, but that's not what the scene needed, that's why it had to be done so many times etc" man those guys are awesome. Non-gamers think all games are like Mario Kart and Fortnight. They envision bright lights and messages that say YOU WIN and BONUS ROUND all over the screen with chiptune music. To them, games from the 1980s are what games are still like today. They have no clue.
With that, love the game for what it is, not what you expect it to be. Because no matter how bad it might be, it's still the work that many people have put effort in to let people explore for a few hours. If you can't, turn off and deal with the riot and virus.
42:57 This part actually brought a tear to my eye. I am an actor, and the thing I constantly struggle with is not over acting. I have been told I go into every seen at 110% and so I have no where to go. I want people to look at me and think "wow, that guy is an incredible actor". Seeing that professionals struggle with it is strangely affirming. I've been working on it, but I find it very hard. I hope to one day give a performance as raw as Troys in that scene.
This and Raising Kratos are amazing glimpses into how much sweat and tears goes into making these games. Really makes you appreciate them so much more.
I found Raising Kratos absolutely excellent, as unlike Grounded, which approached this in the more traditional behind the scenes way, they showed you actual hardship, actual fights between the team, actual emotional hard moments that make you question the whole development, and that just happens so often in this space. I hope we see more of that in Grounded 2.
I've been gaming for 30 or so years and this game took me to a place in gaming i have never been. The emotion involved combine with the relation ship you strike up with Ellie and Joel is beyond words a relationship that will stay with me forever. This is a Master piece of gaming and a journey any gamer should experience. Truly Amazing.
Honestly, I don't even know why i got kinda emotional during that scene when i played it. I didn't want to leave the area. I just wanted to stay there.
The Breaking Bad of video games. Addictive, emotional, climactic, consistently good, beautiful character development, fantastic acting, makes you laugh, cry, cheer, and barely any video games (games in this instance being compared to other TV series) provide the same experience as it did once it's over.
This game gave me unique experience which i never had in other games. Such emotional storyline, amazing characters and music, man, this music! Thank you, Naughty Dog.
niro that calming guitar as you walk trough abandoned city searching for loot. Sometimes the character would chat this revealing their background to us. This game is an absolute masterpiece!
Spoiler. The point where Joel was impaired and as I played as him I could visually see his movements slowing, and his aim becoming shaky it became a very real to me. Also the suspense when he fell of the horse and not knowing if he has succumb to his wounds or not a very interesting experience from a video game. Also during the scene where the player can see the shadow of the doctor who is about to kill Ellie I actually found myself rushing past soldiers to come to her aid as if there was some time countdown HUD in the top of the screen. A excellent emotional story here. I found playing as Ellie very interesting. The entire play style of the game was turned around and I died a lot. I liked it. This company creates video games that have the same weight as a movie in my opinion.
+Shacoy King I felt with Ellie, it was a lot more challenging but when you got to the final part where you realise what Ellie is going to go through in surgery, that makes it more of the whole "Well guess you are sorta my daughter now" unlike the "You are treading on some mighty thin ice!" part of the script when Ellie tells Joel about how she knows about Sarah.
bubbleLoppicus The most important part of the game for me was just before the giraffe, when joel called for Ellie and she just stayed put. That showed how important the giraffe was to her after the events in winter.
I feel like the game should have more weight than the movie as in a movie you are watching someone else's story but here you are controlling a story making it more like it is happening to you
31:20 over the years I've watched this documentary many times. This specific scene, the way it hit me in the game, and then watching it here, watching the real life performances of Ashley and Troy, just the utter power from their eyes and expressions, together with the subtlety of expression on their voices.... Oh man, time sits still for many moments with these, it is truly impactful. I was born in 1984 and began playing videogames when I was six. I could hardly imagine back then the soul sucking impact and realism could achieve. And this game is probably one of the all time hallmarks of that. Cheers.
@@hishkapish4817 Watch "Raising Kratos". Crunch is in the business of game development. Honestly, if people realized how hard the industry is, they will probably respect the work of these people. Their lives are gone for 5+ years. They will miss so many moments they can't get back all to make a 25hr experience.
Best game ever! It ruined me to other games because they just don’t compare. The game gets you right from the start and it keeps you hooked until the very end.
Seeing troy actually act out the scene for Sarah’s death was heart wrenching. Playing through the scene was one thing but seeing the actual emotion that went into acting it out was on a whole other level. Props to all the actors. They’re all incredible. Every time I play through the game, it always has a way of bringing out all of my emotions
I remember being surprised to see Nolan North was in the game as David, once I've played through once, just didn't recognize his voice. That said he did a great job.
As someone who considers the opening to be the most emotional part of the game, having gotten me the closest to tears, I can in fact confirm that they got it.
Still watching this in 2020 you guys are amazing , can't stress how much I love this game. The small things you put in this production is amazing. It is really greatness from small beginnings, like my pride for this game that u guys built. I also finish this game in grounded mode and still cry
So funny they talk about Planet Earth and the fungus part cause I remember thinking back on how fascinating that was and then when i got to play Last of Us I just immediately thought "Planet earth and that ant". Brilliant of them to include that in a survival game.
42:32 Interesting seeing all the other takes of the Sarah/Joel scene. Maybe there's a bit of familiarity bias but I definitely like the acting that made it into the final cut over a lot of these others. Many of these had Troy going a little over the top to the point where it did seem really cringe. Kudos again to Neil.
Michael Kiptoo Mwaniki they need to remaster both for the ps5 tho, think about the FPS and graphics difference, the difference from ps3 to 4 was incredible
@@reterumstrict1091 yeah, and it you havnt already realised, the jump in graphics capabilities from ps4 to ps4 is almost unnoticeable. Its nothing like ps3 versus ps4
hands down my favorite game of all time,i play it once every year each year and that's been like that since it came out,i'll never forget this game so many memories i just hope you are working on the last of us 2...
awesome me each time on a bigger dificulty and i don't like playing it like 2 times in 3 months cuz i then remember everything that'l happen i mean even after a year i still remember a lot but not the little details and that you know
That acting scene between Joel and Sarah is actually a good example, not only of pride, but of putting too much emphasis on Method Acting. Stanislavsky (the guy who founded sort of the goals and steps to acting) was interpreted by the American group that came back as being purely memory or experienced-based. They took the emotional and mental side of his work and concentrated on from the inside out, taking memory and using it to back an emotion. What the director here did, and what Stanislavsky ultimately came to the conclusion of and based his teaching on, was working from the outside in. Using action to start the ball of the scene rolling and create emotion, intentions, and difficulties and let the scene play out from the outside actions inward to the emotion. "I need you to strip yourself of all these ideas and hit this beat, and this beat, and this beat..." was very much along the lines of setting the emotional baggage he was bringing into the scene aside and linking the points of the scene together to forward the dramatic action. Sorry for the long description. I'm studying to become an actor and it's just these little tidbits that stick out to me. This is just something I'd really like to see myself doing someday if I every win the lottery of life. :) This documentary was very well done and I hope to see more like this in the future.
Agreed, about how that scene eventually worked when he wasn't so in his own head, but truly immersed into what the characters themselves were going through in that moment by hitting those markers the director told him to, great scene.
D H Usually there’s a fairly distinct physical resemblance like if you had a picture of the cast and a picture of the characters you could usually point out who plays who because the characters resemble some parts of the actors

+LukaANDkrusty Yeah they are multiple art forms.
And that ladies and gentleman was how the greatest piece of art in history was made
Ok, how was Mona Lisa made?
@@ijoinedthedarkside333 I personally enjoy this more than the Mona Lisa. It's my opinion, doesn't mean everybody is gonna agree with me
@@ijoinedthedarkside333who tf cares about that garbage fake picture of an ugly b
It really is such a masterpiece😍❤️Best videogame of all time (according to me)🥰
7:48 love that art.
The Breaking Bad of video games.
Addictive, emotional, climactic, consistently good, beautiful character development, fantastic acting, makes you laugh, cry, cheer, and barely any video games (games in this instance being compared to other TV series) provide the same experience as it did once it's over.
+Michael Mitchell I thought of Walking Dead but ok. Zombies feel irrelevant to this game.
breaking bad is boring tho........ u mad bro lol
+jajonabe good effort
and its as overrated as breaking bad
+Michael Mitchell There both made by sony coincidence ?
This game gave me unique experience which i never had in other games. Such emotional storyline, amazing characters and music, man, this music! Thank you, Naughty Dog.
niro that calming guitar as you walk trough abandoned city searching for loot. Sometimes the character would chat this revealing their background to us. This game is an absolute masterpiece!
Me too i can't stop thinking about it
Its stuff like this that shows how goddam expensive it is to make a game.
Remembered watching this after completing the game. Appreciated the game more because of this. RIP Annie Wersching.
^^^ this
I feel like the game should have more weight than the movie as in a movie you are watching someone else's story but here you are controlling a story making it more like it is happening to you
Who's here after The Last of Us 2 trailer dropped?
you got me.
Jacob Carey that trailer has made me all excited about the game again
Me
Jacob Carey so hyped
me
It blows me away how young Sarah's actress was at the time. She did such an amazing job
Cheers.
Cumon guys , don't you think Gustavo Santaolalla deserves some credit too??
Yes he made an incredible sound for it
he deserves so much credit. the music gives you insane feels especially the all gone series
I love this games soundtrack so much!!
Man, his soudtrack is one of the best things in this game. I listen to it almost every day.
true
Thanks Naughty Dog staff. This game and the Uncharted series was the reason why I bought a PS3 and ps4.
Dat Boi Spongegar same here
Same here
Mufuggin Fudge My Uncle bought me an Xbox 1 and it's because of this game and the uncharted games, I gave my cousin the Xbox and bought a PS4.
Excluding Unchart 4
Same here
We need a making of tlou part 2. would really apreciate it now
It'd probably just show employees being miserable after crunching a million hours developing the game
The development started with the core idea of "How can we best ruin a set of characters!?"
cry more idiots, game of the year
@@herpderp1750 ik why you feel that way, but its actually so much different..
The bill actor literally just acted as
himself lol
43:47, christ, that was awkward.
But honestly, this scene was so powerful.
Anyone else notice the voice of Ellie is the woman that Captain America saved in The Avengers who worked in that one coffee shop?
Yep that's Ashley Johnson
Yeah
I had no idea Nolan North was David. Incredible.
Best game ever! It ruined me to other games because they just don’t compare. The game gets you right from the start and it keeps you hooked until the very end.
The last of us is proof that video games are art.
Not only that but it's proof that people will engage and get lost in a great story in a singer player games
It’s also proof that video games are video games.
The Last of Us's story is ok. Nothing special, pretty B-movie melodrama just with slightly better-than-usual writing. Hardly a masterpiece of a story
Orange Tack ok sure, but they did so many things right with it too
@Aputsiaq Lennert why?
Watching this makes me teary eyed over Annie who played as Tess...
I walked into this game with the greatest expectations after hearing that it is the greatest game ever. And it still delivered more than I expected
watching this makes me want to replay through last of us so i can appreciate it even more
torxx12 same i'm doing it now
EpicGamersAllday I'm having my Dad watch me play since it's basically like a movie.
cool does he like it
We're not starting until next saturday or so
+Noobface hhahah cool :D
I remember being surprised to see Nolan North was in the game as David, once I've played through once, just didn't recognize his voice. That said he did a great job.
True... It suprised me too O.O
Same...same.
The actor that plays Joel (his voice)... the animated person looks MORE like his voice sounds....... Does ANYONE understand what i am trying to say???
+TheZowwee That his voice fits the chracter more than himself, right?
Mr. Popo yeah. He just does a nice voice for that guy I guess.. is what I was saying.
TheZowwee
Gotcha
+TheZowwee Yeah thats what voice actors do. :)
djshauny1
he does it very well. I can do a pretty good voice impersonation of Kermit the Frog and Hank Hill from King of the Hill... LOL.
7:42 i can see the resemblance with Pedro Pascal now
After seeing all of this, I'm perfectly fine with them not rushing Part II.
A rushed game is forever bad a delayed game has more potential
Puppet Comhairle and now they’ve ruined PT2
Haha
@@samc863 ouch.
@@SawdEndymon how?
I bought this game for my PS3 and PS4. If you make a remastered version for the future PS5 console, I will buy it once again. This game deserves it.
probably they will release last of us 2 on ps4, then remaster it for ps5
Michael Kiptoo Mwaniki they need to remaster both for the ps5 tho, think about the FPS and graphics difference, the difference from ps3 to 4 was incredible
True
Huge FX knowing now what I didn’t know then (that gta5 is getting another remaster), this also might just happen
@@reterumstrict1091 yeah, and it you havnt already realised, the jump in graphics capabilities from ps4 to ps4 is almost unnoticeable. Its nothing like ps3 versus ps4

so, three times?
Ha, weak!

awesome me that's a bit hardcore ain't it ? ;)
gvgf- therandomgamer I guess. But I love it too much to part with it for too long.
42:38 the start of one of the best lessons for every inspiring actor i think.
Like, If you are here after watching Grounded 2 ...
I’m re-watching before checking out the new doc
Rewatching after Grounded 2.
This is very interesting, good to see how my favorite game on the ps3 was made
That acting scene between Joel and Sarah is actually a good example, not only of pride, but of putting too much emphasis on Method Acting.
I love the dialogue in this game, so watching the voice actors deliver the lines with such passion is really powerful 🔥
The voices are so perfect for their characters, but they don't match the faces of the actual people at all.😂
Dikota Williams Exactly!
Are their faces supposed to match? These are video game characters, not movie actors.
@@dh2266 You literally missed the whole point. He meant the voices dont match the voice actor's faces..
D H Usually there’s a fairly distinct physical resemblance like if you had a picture of the cast and a picture of the characters you could usually point out who plays who because the characters resemble some parts of the actors
😂😂😂
I just dropped my phone on my face because I'm laying down. Just thought I'd share my pain
