  • Hello and welcome back to another noseh! Today we go and take a look at Glenfield Watermill, on the outskirts of Leicester. After finding Glenfield Watermill through looking at the old maps online, I couldn't wait to get over there and have a look. The main building itself, unfortunatly is locked up, but there was enough for us to look at, I also found an interesting little culvert.
    The Watermill itself, was powered by the picturesque Rothley Brook, a tributary of the river Soar, I couldn't find a lot online in terms of the mills history, but it sits in a very accesable location.
    The midlands very first Steam Railway, The Leicester to Swannington Railway, went past the mill, and is now a footpath. This Mill building, and workings, may be late 18th century, but could be later. One theory I had whilst down here, was that during construction of the railway, which opened in 1832, is that, during construction of the embankment, they may have had to modify some of the mills water workings that lay close to the railway bank.
    I enjoyed making this video, although it was my 4th attemped!
    Joining me for this one, is my son, Vinny, who just recently has taken a keen interest in photography, and this kind of history, being nearly 15, this was around the Ssame time I took a keen interest in this stuff as well!
    Anyway, lets go and take a look at this wonderfull old mill near Leicester.
    I hope you enjoy the video, cheers, Steve, X

      Thanks Martin. I think we will get some sort of cheap car to send in to these places, with a thin rope tied to the back of coarse haha

    Really interesting. When walking through the brooks of villages, you can come across some fascinating hidden structures that you would normally never see.

    Great video. Well done both. I have often cycled past this & heard the water rushing over the wear, but didn’t know about the Mill 😀at all

      Thank you. I spend quite a bit of time looking at old maps online, searching for old mills. Usually they are either levelled, or converted to homes. So to come across this one day, still there was brilliant. Thanks for watching!

    Nice walk down that ivanhoe trail. I'm from down stream in anstey, they've converted the anstey mill. Dunno which is older. was curious of this mill as you can only see bits off the path.

      @LeiceExplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there! Yes the mill at anstey, which I don't know the age of, I noticed on the maps, but I was gutted to see it was occupied, whilst at the same time happy to know it hadn't been levelled. Thanks for watching

    The curved metal guide in the mill wall could possibly be for the sluice gate ?

    • @LeiceExplore
      @LeiceExplore  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it appears that way from a comment I just read

    Looks like it was an undershot wheel.

    As someone who has lived close by all my life, having walked, ran & cycled along there literally hundreds of time often wondered about the history of the mill. Looking closely at the brickwork on the mill the bricks look very similar to those of the ones at Kirby Muxloe Castle, could that be possible, was there a brickwork close by ?

    • @LeiceExplore
      @LeiceExplore  15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hello there, thank you. I think there may have been a brick yard next to this railway, near the mill.

    Great Video. We used to fish the pool below the weir as kids but obviously it is now silted up and overgrown because it used to be quite deep. I do remember seeing something online that went into the Mills history and the occupants.

      Thank you Daniel. There still are some decent sized fish in here from what I seen on the day, not directly at the mill, but nearby
