I used to work at Children's of Alabama and you definitely remind me of all of the child life specialist there but I completely understand the need to change! I worked my butt off to become a nurse but now I am a flight attendant because nursing was DRAINING my mental health!
Im praying that you continue to do whatever you feel is right for you!

I understand that feeling of almost being embarrassed to change majors or change your mind after originally thinking you’re so sure you want to do it and talking about it. I know everybody’s telling you it’s totally normal, and it is - but also know that you approached this decision very logically - you have very very good reasons, it’s not like you just woke up one day and you were like ::flip your hair:: I think I just wanna do something else instead for no reason. You have approached this very rationally and logically and to me it shows how good of a head you have on your shoulders and you’re very smart about this so I wish you all the best and you’re gonna go far girl💖

Hey Lauren! I'm a graduate student that's been watching your channel for a while. Your optimism, and bubbly nature always motivates me (and I love that our favorite color is pink). In life things change but that's the sign of things to come. You made your choice, and it is valid. Changes are always good, and it just means you're getting on course to where you need to be. Wishing you the best ! 🥰💞💞✨✨✨

Lauren I totally feel you! My major was psych and family development, with the intention of going into child life. I did a practicum, applied to FIFTEEN practicums and only heard back from two which one was the one I got. Took certs and classes online to help me with pre reqs. I ended up dropping the idea of becoming a CCLS, because it’s FAR too competitive for not the best pay. It’s now been 7 years or so since I dropped the idea and I’m working in the hospital as a psych counselor (working with kiddos who have mental illness/suicidal) and love it. But so much of what you said during this video I FEEL you….. exact same reason I dropped it too. Just know things will work out :)

Yay you posted a new video!!! You inspire me so much. I am in middle school and there as been a lot of changes with my teachers and classes. And also with friends. I was in a very toxic friend group and because of you I didn’t what to hang out with them any more. I remember you said to always be yourself in one of your videos and when I was with those people I wasn’t myself. Now I am in a better friend group that treats me better. Thank you for that. Anyways change is good and you have all the right to change your major and don’t be scared of change it will be great. I love your videos they make me feel so happy and I hope you have a great rest of your day and a great weekend😆

I struggled with my mental health so badly in my second year of uni and I was in this sort of spiral where I knew I needed a degree to be teacher, which is my dream, but I also knew I was falling apart trying to get it. Making a change that you know needs to be made can be so hard, especially when you've put in so much work already. I think it's so amazing that you changed your major and I really hope things get better 💖💖

School is always a hard subject to discuss with anyone because everyone is always going to have their opinion of what you should do. I loved hearing your story and I really relate to the decline of physical/mental health from school. I was in a grad program for athletic training, and realized it was not worth the struggle anymore when I started questioning if it was even what I wanted to do anymore. I quit, moved back to the city that I love, and now I'm going to be starting work as a personal trainer instead. I wish you luck in your new major/minor. I know how hard it is to quit something that you put so much work into.

Girl don’t be embarrassed about changing your major! I changed mine back and forth several times and I even took a 5 year break from college. Stumbling upon your channel last summer (it was your moving into the Pi Phi house video) helped inspire me to go back to school! It made me less self conscious to go back at the age of 25, since you yourself didn’t start right after high school.
Keep on following your passion and don’t focus on the major! Seeing your content makes my day brighter😊

10 years ago, my cousin was a child life specialist at one of the best childrens hospitals in the country for a few years post-grad. Although she had a psychology major/child life concentration (switched to that from literally musical theatre), she no longer works there and I have so many friends who are in it and their majors are not related to the field. So even if you wanted to do that one day you could; the door isn’t closed forever because of this one experience at UA. We live in a world where your major honestly matters maybe 50% of what it used to- the broader the major, the more you can do. Creative media minor is perfect for you, and the right job will fall into place ❤️

Lauren, I'm your age, a 6th year in undergrad and I changed my major! Thank you for posting about this! It's okay and I always find it hard to remember that I am on my own timeline and it may be different from everyone else's. I am different for graduating later at an older age and that is okay! It's so so hard to remember when everyone graduates early/on time and seemingly has the perfect college experience.

Hey Lauren! I love this video! I recently struggled with my own mental health and family issues/marital issues while in nursing school. I found myself not being as passionate about nursing as I was in the beginning. I took a step away from nursing school because I knew it wasn’t fair to myself, my instructors, classmates or others who were dying to be nurses. I was confused on what to do but I feel so at peace with everything. Not really sure what I want to change my major to but I’ve always loved education and children. But thank you for the encouragement of knowing that change is okay!

Omg! I had no idea that so much went into being a child life specialist. The one that worked with us at our hospital was so so sweet and amazing with our son and I’m so grateful. It makes me upset that people don’t take that seriously. Also the internship process and all that sounds SO SO STRESSFUL. NOPE. I don’t blame you for switching. I too changed my major ( from psych to mass comm) and I don’t regret it. I’m so proud of you for changing and so proud of you for being so open and honest with us. Love you.

I don't use my full degree, but I can honestly say college molded me into a well rounded individual, and that's what really matters! And always remember, everything happens for a reason! I love that you mentioned not wanting to take someone’s spot that’s life mission is to be in that career. So self-less. What’s interesting is the risk of going through with the major, unpaid internship, and student tuition is a huge risk and so is starting a TH-cam channel but you love TH-cam and content creation which is why you took that risk and look where you are now.
Lesson is always take risks but for what you are passionate about. I think this is the right move and also you would go to a car wash with pink soap lol

Which isn't bad but also doesn't set you up for success. thankfully I found a site, but so many people didn't. and once I was in it, there was so much work that I burned myself out within the first two weeks of the semester. I decided to change my program with one year left in graduate school and I am sooooo happy. Change can be weird but it is never too late to change your mind. Thank you for sharing!!

Have you thought about applying to international NGOs and working overseas? I spent a lot of time in Iraq recently and NGOs like OxFam, catholic charities, SGS international, etc would probably love someone like you. Especially being able to work with refugee and vulnerable children. I have a such a passion for this field but can’t bring myself to finish the degrees and schooling required. I think you can use your experience in so many different ways. It doesn’t have to be in the US either.

When so was in college, I wanted to become a child play therapist. I had to have a psychology BA. I was in my third year and they told me the same thing about the limited availability of spaces for the next step. I ran to my advisor after class and said I needed to find something else. She pointed me to education. I ran to the education department and they told me they couldn’t talk to me until I changed my major. My psychology advisor and I awkwardly changed my major and she signed me up for classes. Now I teach English and am doing my MA in Education with a focus in Bibliotherapy in schools. Stressful but worth it.

Please remember that sorority membership is for life! The alumna experience is wonderful. More of the fun and less of the work. 😄 Once you are settled after graduation, look into an alum chapter.

My Dad used to tell me that my car runs better when it's clean. 😜 He passed away 6 years ago now and I always think of that when I clean out my car. ❤️

I changed my major first semester of senior year and luckily was able to graduate a semester early too. I was also a child life minor for a good 6 weeks and then learned all the info and said yeah no thank you im dropping it.

Think it’s very normal for people’s responsibilities to change. It becomes hard as an upper class man to still engage with everything at the same level when you’re applying to jobs/grad school/studying for the MCAT.
    It’s part of growth

Wow girl, thank you for this! I've been on the Child Life path for several years now after getting my BS and MS, and have applied for an internship for the past 10 semesters. It's sad and disheartening how competitive the field has become, and how difficult it is to get into something I've dreamed about for so long. Your perspective was really helpful as I've been seeking other careers. Thank you!!😀

Hi Lauren!! Omg I am currently changing my career choice! I went to school for 3 years as an events and hospitality major. And now I really want to try to become a paramedic! But I can’t apply until next year which sucks but I am going to work💰 until then! You are so inspiring!😃

I changed majors my second quarter of freshman year. I’d been in engineering, which, at the time, had very few women. It was way too competitive for comfort. I went into clinical lab science and loved it, worked in a microbiology lab in a hospital for my entire career. ☺️❤️❤️

Lauren, I thought I was going to be a nurse .. however a blessing came out of nursing school .. my husband! I dropped out of nursing and I became a social worker!! So it is okay to drop your major! I love you and fully support your decision! You do what you want to do!

I did the exact same thing Lauren. I went through the the same stuff. Except I actually went as far as completing the practicum before I figured it out. You are a step ahead and be glad you didn’t go any further. Also, same girl. The whole internship process for Child Life is insane. I was like this is NOT it. My mental health was declining. Also, not to mention IF you are lucky enough to even land an internship you will 100% be relocating which is $ because it most like will be a random city where you don’t have family/ friends. Also I remember having to do Hospital visits for child life. They are usually called child life 101. Basically you learn everything you need to know about the internship process and meet with the child life specialist. Needless to say I left their feeling even more defeated knowing my odds

I was in the same boat. I started college as a Biology and Anthropology double major. Unfortunately, the college only had so many open spots for each course even through most of the school was STEM majors. I found it mentally draining to have to wait months to see if I was able to get a spot in the course. Along the way, I found that I wanted to focus more on Anthropology and Healthcare. So after 6 years of undergraduate courses, I switched to being an Anthropology and Health double major. This allowed me to go to graduate school to receive my Master in Public Health (MPH) degree. In the beginning, it feels like the world is ending because we have spent so much time and energy working towards a certain degree. It's okay to feel scared or uncertain on how our futures are going to look. I don't regret my decisions and I am more confident now than I was before my major change on how successful I will be in the future during medical school.

I'm also a HDFS Major w/a Child Life Concentration at Bam (online) and I'm planning on changing it as well, most likely dropping the concentration due to the absolute *INSANITY* that the practicum and the internships are. I love the idea of being a CCLS and helping kiddos, but right now it's not in the cards at all for all that unneeded stress.

Good for you for pivoting! The most important thing is pursuing what you love and are good at! You really don't need college. Unless you are a doctor or engineer or something, college is showing you can jump through hoops, pay a lot of money and have a "degree" at the end to prove it. The cost is ridiculous and this whole unpaid internship requirement is BS. We never had that requirement when I was in college back in the day. I've heard of a lot of college kids working for free.

I am so thankful you were so respectful to the others who wanted to be a child life specialist! My undergrad was in psychology and I tried twice to get an internship and couldn’t because others were more competitive with a specialized degree. I ended up getting my Masters in ABA, but it truly IS so difficult to get an internship and so competitive, and it’s so great you followed your heart and allowed others to have a better chance! Proud of you for making that tough decision!
