SO3 is probably my favorite JRPG of all time. I'm thinking of replaying it and maybe playing SO2 on an emulator or when it comes out on Switch. I know SO2 is a bit old school but I played Chrono Trigger and loved it. Do you think it's worth playing SO2 and/or SO1? Also thanks for this video, appreciate it!
@@farazthefish the only other Star Ocean game Ive played is the Switch version of the first one, I definitely enjoyed it. I eventually plan to review every game in the series
I was first introduced with Last Hope cuz Meracle (I like catgirls!), with her INSANE strength on the 360, been playing the International Version again on PS3! I actually found this for, like, 50p, so I nabbed it!
I loved this game and its twist. I feel like everything was well executed for its time. It's probably the best SO imo. Sadly it was also the last good SO. The recent titles are just bleh and kind of lacking.
I watched my brother play this on our Playstation 2 when I was like 8 and I remember being shocked by the ending, it stuck in my mind for years. Looking back at it now I can see that the story was influenced by Gnosticism, the concept of a false god, twin savior figures, even Sofia is an important figure in Gnosticism. It makes want to play it or even just watch a play though so I can experience the story again because I haven't seen it in so long.
The first time i saw this game was on an AD in the October 2004 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly but got the game Christmas that same year. Lol good times.
Main story party members: Fayt, Sophia, Cliff and Maria The following are recruitable party members but you can only get two of them IN ONE PLAYTHROUGH 1. Nel 2. Albel 3. Peppita 4. Roger Party members exclusive in the Director's Cut edition of the game: Adray and Mirage
Can confirm the PS2 version did not have any issues with the button presses. I know this for sure since Maria was my main dps and her combo needed me to continually execute the same button presses.
Does this mean ps4 version is not recommended? I own the original on ps2, but currently no way to play it. Would like to know if getting it on ps4 is worth the trouble of dealing with controls.
@@lastbriteSon Sorry for the late reply but wanted to note that if you have a working PS2 and can get the original ps2 game, that's the best way to go. I've never played the PS4 version but if there is any sort of issue with the button presses it might just make it annoying to do battle bonus/fury combos which because pretty necessary for late in the game against some of the more OP bosses.
This games storyline to this day remains to be one of the best I've ever played through. To be honest, I don't think I've even played a game after this that matched the impact this one had on me. I'm definitely buying this for the ps4 this week to replay. I've held on to this game all these years and I think it's time picked it up again. Definitely hoping for a remake one day as long as the story remains the same and the controls are updated haha.
@Naro I agree with Matteo, The storyline was incredible to experience, One of the best still to this day. The Combat was fun to of course but the Story what kept me playing.
@Naro The combat was definitely a plus for its time, however the controls really show their age now. To each their own man, I very much enjoyed the story and many others have as well. All the best buddy.
@Naro I mean, that's not really what happens. The creator simulates an organic universe using magical future space tech (suspend your disbelief, surely) - the creations learn to imbue their genetics with magical space symbols that allow for great destruction, protection or change. The alter their physiology with said magical space symbols and pass through a portal that allows 4d beings to physically enter 3d space. Not too much of a stretch beyond that, that they could send altered beings from 3d space into 4d space. It's science fantasy bro, it doesn't have to make perfect sense. Just obey the laws of it's own universe, which are not the same rules as ours. But sure go off about a video game breaking physics lmao. It's not perfect, but it had an emotional impact on me as a kid and I still love it to this day.
@Naro you came to watch a video about something you don't like, then reply to someone's comment about liking it to tell them your opinion about it For something that sucks ass to you, you sure dedicate a lot of energy to it Whatever makes you happy though broski
1:25 the "long" and short" are not based on how hard or soft you push the button. it refers to the range that the character is from the enemy. it even tells you the range you're at in the top left of the screen during battle.
there is also a long and short press for doing a regular or special attack. this created 8 different basic attacks you could use without going into menus just based on distance and how long (or how hard) you press the X or O buttons. and yes, this game does make full use of the ps2 controller's pressure sensitive buttons. I actually learned about this feature the hard way when I bought a third party controller to replace my original ps2 controller that had some joystick drift and an x button that was wearing out. the third party controller didnt have the pressure sensitive features (i didnt even know about this feature till I started doing research after having some problems with it). for the most part you can get by with long and short presses in combat, but there is a required minigame (involving some kind of dragon flute, or something, i think) part way through the story that has serious problems if you dont have a pressure sensitive controller.
Really would love to see all these games get rebooted and remastered in current generation of consoles (looking at you SO2 and SO3). Absolutely miss them. No other games really scratch my JRPG itch quite like these games.
It would be awesome to see the old games get a new coat of paint. They put SO1 on most modern platforms and Til the End of Time on is PS4, but they're just ports of older versions of the games
Super chill video. I also enjoyed the heck out of this game as a kid, and your review brought back good memories. Nice work. Btw the reason the characters stand in the corner is because of Auto/Manual I think
I love this game with a passion. Also, did y'all know they made a manga of it? To your point about the button presses, I've never had that issue with the old version or the PS4 version. And as far as Cliff's lack of personality, I always chalked that up to him attempting to hide everything from Fayt, hopefully that was intended.
I still have my old PS2 working and I've been letting my younger cousin play some old games on it, got 2 different persona games from ebay for him and I'm wondering if I should get this game for him, looks amazing but that audio does seem like it would be annoying
@@UntitledSpecifics this is definitely a great game to start this series with, it is the third in the series, but you don't need to play the first two to get into this one
What gets me is thst it's the only PS2 game I know of on multiple discs! I don't count Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater & Subsistence or Silent Hill 2, for example, as that as there, the main game is only on the one disc, the others are filled with Bonus Material! And in Subsistence's case, it's well worth the price, if you ask me!!
I know what you mean, I remember when I first brought this home back in the day and saw the second disc. I actually put disc 2 in my system first to see what it was because I didn't realize it was actually a 2 disc story
there were definitely problems with the ps2 version if you tried to play with a third party controller that didnt properly support the pressure sensitive buttons. I wonder if the ps4 port didnt properly account for that? once i started using the original ps2 controllers, the gameplay got significantly easier (this game was actually how I found out that not all 3rd party controllers were fully featured). as for the voice volume, I definitely dont remember that being an issue on the ps2. another issue with the port perhaps?
The issue you had at 2:00 I had the same issue on the original ps2 with the original controller when I originally played it years ago. I tried playing the game a bit recently but with a shitty chinese wireless ps2 controller and I had the same issue.
How do you even make more SO games after Til the End of Time? You literally fight and beat God and find out that you're just a simulation. I mean, that's it. Pack it up and go home. What's left to discover after that? I suppose you could go all Rick and Morty and explore the multiverse.
Seems like an interesting story so far. (I'm in Kirlsa) One of the worst battle systems I've ever seen in a game with useless tactics and youre always underleveled, and very awkward cutscenes.
Star Ocean till the end of time is one of the most monotonous games ever created. You spend 99.9% of your time exploring areas and when doing so you only unlock 1% of the map at a time you have to literally calm the edge of a map and then literally color it in with your entire body running back and forth. It is one of the worst exploration designs in gaming history. On top of that every single combat mode is broken because the characters hop around and do nothing with every single mode except all out attack. Enemies can even hit you from literally off screen. Star Ocean till the end of time is not a good game by any stretch it is absolutely horrendous. When you're watching the cutscenes the dialogue will pause while the next word is written out for them and then they will begin talking again. So when there's a long word the characters just sit there quietly and wait for it to be spelled out. It is the worst implementation of dialogue I've ever seen and that's what the speed turned all the way up. There are also literally hundreds upon hundreds of pages of text to read into to find out about the lore of the world you have to literally read a novel and I'm not kidding.
Have you played any of the Star Ocean games before? Let me know about your experiences with the series here in the commebts

I'm still playing it to this day.. One of my all time favo's and still for me not boring..ow and I never had problems with soft voices
I just finished the game, and I had no real issue with the voices. Maybe it's because I wear headphones when I play.

This is correct. That’s the reason there’s a range indicator at the top of the combat screen. I can understand how he was confused about that…
