10 O'Clock Bells (Chimes) Ringing on the California Tower in Balboa Park, San Diego

- We listened to and looked at the beautiful California Tower as the 10 am bells (chimes) rang out along El Prado in Balboa Park.
The California Tower was built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition and has a variety of architecture styles featuring lovely ornamentation and tiles.
The lovely Westminster Chimes (Cambridge Quarters) ring out ahead of the 10 o'clock bells.
This brings back wonderful memories. My grandmother & uncle had a large home on 3rd Ave, 3 blocks from Balboa Park, & every time we'd visit I'd enjoy sitting out on the granite front steps listening to those wonderful bells. Mix in the breezes from the bay, the wonderful shade from the tall palms, eucalyptus & other trees along the sidewalks, the peace & quiet from the area itself, the cooing of the doves & the beautiful mourning doves... it was a treasured time in my life. We used to have a mantle clock with the same chime, but it just didn't invoke the same nostalgic feelings as this video of the Tower Bells.❤

The chimes are played on tuned metal rods struck by tiny mallets (similar to what you'd find inside a grandfather clock). The chimes are then amplified a million times and projected through the bullhorns at the top of the tower. So the chime is part electronic, part genuine bell strike.
Maas-Rowe.
But I have to say the tune sounds amazing. Perfect sound for a clock tower too or other bell towers.
The new speakers are amazing! The sound is really clear. You can't tell from the video but when you're there in person you can hear a difference.
This has got to be one of my favorite sounds 💛

Very nice sound and for the benefit and information of you and others who view this, there are actually words for the Westminster melody and they are below if you want to look them over while listening or sing along.
Lord, through this hour,
be Thou our guide.
So, by Thy power,
no foot shall slide.
These words are based on Psalm 37:23-24, where David the psalmist declares this:
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in His way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with His hand.
Oh, I didn’t know that!!! But you gotta admit, the chimes sound awesome whether it’s real bells or electronic bells like the California tower. I usually think when I hear this chime there’s a clock tower nearby but no need to complain, counting the chimes helps other than looking at my Apple Watch.
They do sound great and it was my joy to share this with you and the rest of the TH-cam community.

Sounds amazing. Like electronic bells chimes. Chiming the hour. This type of sound would be great for a clock tower too. This chime reminds me of when I hear this, I think there’s a clock tower nearby but not trying to complain here but counting the chimes help figure out what time is it. I have a Apple Watch so referring to it can also help me determine what time is it too. What songs other than the clock chimes do you hear from this tower?

Almost. It's a series of tuned chime rods (similar to a grandfather clock) that are connected to a speaker at the top of the tower.
