  • Nerikomi Patterns and Techniques. This pottery compilation includes 7 nerikomi techniques, 9 nerikomi patterns/blocks, and 14 finished pieces that use the nerikomi process. All of the videos in this compilation are from my channel with some unseen extras thrown in. This nerikomi compilation is meant to wow and inspire. I'm using colored porcelain that was made by mixing in different mason stains at different percentages by weight. Nerikomi, agateware, neriage and marbled clay are all in the colored clay family of techniques. There are difference between them but sometimes the terms are used more interchangeably. Nerikomi is typically hand built and more controlled.
    A majority of these videos can be found on my channel at longer lengths, with more steps and in some cases, narration to explain what I'm doing in the tutorial. Some are from my instagram. They've been shortened and audio has been removed for this pottery compilation so you can enjoy all of the beautiful patterns and colored clay.

    You might also come across neriage in your nerikomi search. It's a similar process, sometimes used interchangeably, but neriage is usually made on the wheel after your slabs are cut and formed into a cylinder. Neri means "to mix" and age means "pull up". But again, nerikomi and neriage are similar and use many of the same techniques. Marbled clay is also in this family but usually marbled clay is messier and uncontrolled. Nerikomi, agateware, and neriage are more controlled processes.

    It was awesome to finally see some of those pieces finished!
    Oh, and I always wondered, when you're making the cubes, do you model them first, then cut them in half, take part of the inside mass away and "glue" it all back together, or do you make each side separately and then just connect them in one piece?

    • @CeramicJim
      @CeramicJim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sororus Thank you! I actually cut six square slabs, bevel the edges, slip/score, attach, scrape, sand then fire to cone 6. Thank you asking!

    Very nice effect, do you use conventional clay at all times, or do you do like the air drying types of 'clay'? Have you tried to throw nerikomi/agate on the wheel?, and if you've done, how did it turn out? My sister said it was a bad idea that you were 'banded' 😁😁😁😁😁, think she fancies you........

    • @CeramicJim

      I actually have thrown with nerikomi/agatware. I made a video comparing the two a few weeks ago. Surprising different but both were really interesting. Check it out here:

      I always use porcelain because I want to be able to drink/eat with it my work or have it be stronger and more permanent.

    quick question, do you ever trap air bubbles between the layers and end up with a kiln explosion?

    • @CeramicJim
      @CeramicJim  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I rarely get bubbles because I try to “roll” the pieces together vs just smacking them together. If I do get any air bubbles I see them when I cut a slab from a larger block and can easily work it out. AND air bubbles just trap moisture and don’t allow the clay to dry very fast. If a piece has an air bubble but it dries completely and is fire slowly it can STILL survive. Things usually blow up because of firing too fast most of the time in my experience. Thanks for the comment Paul. Your channel is really cool by the way ;)

      @@CeramicJim thanks! Thank you for these videos, colored clays look really cool. I used to study ceramics as an archaeologist and finding english agateware would make my day, so cool looking. Favorite one was a mostly red/white agateware teapot with an astbury spout. It would've been really cool if it wasn't smashed haha

    Really like the "shell"/"fan" pattern. I hadn't seen that before.
    Also, isn't that "my" glass you make (and are holding) at the end of the video. I did get it and hope to post an "unboxing" for you this weekend.

    • @CeramicJim

      Haha. I made two of those striped pattern glasses. I gave you the nicer one ;) I kept the prototype. I would love to see an unboxing! I hope you’re enjoying the glass and the extras. Thanks for the comment Mark!

    Stupid questions....1. Can this be fired in a regular ceramic kiln? 2. Can it be fired with other kinds of ceramics such as porcelain? ...and 3. You used Mason pigment, can you use mixed varieties of pigment in the same firing?

    • @CeramicJim
      @CeramicJim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Yes.
      2. Yes. These colored clays were made by wedging the pigments into plain porcelain.
      3. You can make a purple colored clay by mixing a red and blue power beforehand or mixing red and blue clays together. It's fun to experiment with mason stains.

    Watching you work (with the music muted) is amazing. Not hating, and it's only my opinion, the techno music just doesn't match the beautifully smooth artistry with which you work. Sorry.

      Yeah hindsight is 2020 isn’t it? I’ve dialed it back a bit since making those kinds of vids. It seemed like it might be too audibly aggressive. Turns out I was right. I appreciate the compliment and the feedback :)

      @@CeramicJim I remember having that one really "Awesome" teacher in high school. We all learned so much more from him because he was so completely engaged with all his students. He managed to make each of us feel like we were special, an individual, even in an overstuffed class of 30. I can tell from your video's that you're one of those rare, very special, teachers. Thank you again for having such interesting, educational and fun videos!!!
