Brilliant video Funky, your opinion on things is brilliant. Loved the time lapse at the beginning with the shooting stars, the "Zulu" clip was hilarious! Fantastic end frame, who knew we had all those stars !!

The movable grass clumps that as you said you could easily twist your ankle on - we called moon grass and always seemed to grow near boggy marsh land. Many a time on Mil exercises have had to lay down when under simulated fire on the grass hills and there always seemed to be some water spring that entered the top of you combat jacket !! - Have done many days on the BB in all kinds of weather - in winter with troop carriers having problems getting up Church Hill because of the ice, we still had to do daytime covert patrol exercises leaving troop shelters in white out conditions. This was in the early 90's - with no GPS - just a compass, maps and c+ap radios. The army issued kit was also c+ap - and it's thanks to Silverman's in Camberley and Survival Aids stores now both on-line so no direct visit is required that extra and better winter kit could be purchased. Was in the Royal Engineers, but as I was an Officer Cadet - all our pre Sandhurst training was based on infantry skills and tactics so saw a lot of Brecon, Salisbury Plain and Barossa training area at Sandhurst all unique training facilities. Funky, a most enjoyable video series. Two scenes I could really relate to were (1) ~"mate, you can't really keep from smiling in a beautiful place like this" and (2) you were soaking your feet in that mountain stream.
I was amazed at the large number of interesting topics you delved into in this video series. Keep it up!
MSR makes a titanium pot kit similar to the Snow Peak but the fry pan when used as a lid channels the condensation back into the pot.

Tactical Hey Tac don't know if you know this, but this is place is in Wales. Didn't you say on a recent vid that you are of Welsh descent?
You have to come over to Wales for a visit 'cause there's loads of places like this, loads of castles and shit too. Look up Snowdonia, it's in North Wales, awesome place. I live about an hour or so from the Brecon Beacons in Pembrokeshire ,another beautiful part of the world. I'm also a member of the Tac pack :)

Really enjoying the videos from your Brecon trip Darren.
Did a very similar journey around their exactly a year ago, just after recovering from heart surgery. Weather was similarly beautiful, with awesome views all around. But we also managed to include the summits of Corn Du, Pen Y Fan, Cribyn and Fan y Big. Great being up there in the evening, with the horseshoe ridge all to ourselves. Felt really alive again, after spending too much time in hospital...
BUT was surprised that you didn't take a closer look at your OS map for your descent? As you would have seen the southern escape route from the Bwlch Ar y Fan pass down to the reservoir (currently drained), which would have been a hell of lot easier route (quicker and safer). Anyway the footbath in the stream at the bottom looked like a well earned reward for your boggy slog ;)
We are planning to go back again there later this month. So was wondering how the upgrade work on the reservoir was going, and whether there were any indications that they might fence it all off? Hopefully not, as it is an epic wild camping spot...
    ATB, Andy

I live 5 minutes down the road from the carpark i was up there bank holiday monday just gone. Ive lost count how many times ive been up those hills and the views still get me everytime. When you looked down to the drained reservoir you should have pitched on the ridge on the right hand side its all flat with amazing views. great video by the way :)

We have been hiking in the Beacons for the last 7 years started with a full burgen and belt kit carrying about 70 lbs, every year we work on getting it lighter lol, this year I carried 36 lbs if I go lighter I would lose some comfort items or it gets really expensive. Great trip Funky great to see you in Wales doing the big hills. ATB James

On the freeze dried meals I usually cut them the same way as an MRE pouch which is horizontally (depending on the packaging of course) or eat till the spoon won't get to the bottom, then slice off about three or four inches of the package top to get to the rest of the food (if I open it the way it is designed, at the top). The best way of course is an extra long titanium spoon. Those little short spork things are just about useless for modern packaged camping food. Glad you like the Nalgene brother!

Hi guys that was really impressive to see your buddy record winds of 85 M.P.H. outside his tent and it was really impressive to that his tent survived it as the wind blowing at much less speed than that say between 30-40 and 40-50 MPH. has broken the ribs of two of my tents which I rected in a similar type of area as this that had little wind cover.

Nice video FP! As you know, the more you do those type of outings, the more you would make decisions about the gear you would select for the next outing. As you lot in the UK say, "horses for courses". Nothing wrong with your gear, at all, just that you are no longer a young, hard charging grunt. :-) Stay funky and I look forward to your next part on this trip to the hills.

in the past month, every youtube video longer than 20-25 minutes halts part way thru. the sound continues but the video stops. every video. by multiple different people not just yours. this one halted twice . the close up of the split rock along the trail and the close up on the moon. when I attempted to edit and upload a longer video the editer clipped mine to about the same length. I ended up splitting it into two segments. just menioning it in passing. I just hit refresh on the browser and the video starts over at the halted point.

Hi Funky, I used to camp up in mountains on climbing trips and to hold tent in place used to use rocks to hold tent down works well and no carrying extra pegs also a lot of mountains just too rocky to get pegs in. Great vids looks like your catching the mountain bug. If the weather is really wild your best bet is a bivi bag good on ledges and light too all best Will😁

Hey Funky, I got a nice cast aluminium gardening trowel for two or three quid in Home bargains a couple of months ago. Great for rearranging coals in a fire as well as on shovel recce... Not managed to break it yet. Weighs six ounces though, so may be a bit too heavy for an old man! ;o)

Another great video, I'm a backpacker first and dabble with a bit of bureaucracy since I love in the lakes admit has to be said that it's all a learning experience, continually.
Every time you said about this or that I thought to myself, yeah I remember that struggle lol.
Thankfully there's lots of nice lightweight and fairly cheap reliable gear about these days including long handled titanium spoons for those ration and dehydrated meals haha.
It's swings and round abouts though, what workshop the hills may not in the woods admits finding that balance to suit you, your needs and your capabilities.

great video, and beautiful area to spend a few days in. If you get a chance check out a company called Toaks, they make some really good titanium products, at a reasonable price. I use 750mi pot with bail handle, got it for around 30 bucks on amazon. I to eat meals out of the bag on the trail, and bought me a exta long titanium spork. Now I have no worries about how tall the bags are.. again keep up the great work and thanks for letting us tag along.

I just found this series of videos. Sorry it's been so long.
Tough hills there, that's why we use it for selection. 40 odd pound isn't that heavy, especially when going up the granny route then skirting corn du pronounced corn deep and taking the sheep track around pen y fan not pen eye fan. I hope you've worked on your fitness and pronunciation of the mountain names.
I totally agree about the titanium crusader kit. I'd get one.

      thanks bro
if i weighed everything i carried including clothes and film kits etc it was over 55lb, im 44 and have bad back and legs.
it was a miracle i got to the foot of corn du to be honest lol.
the only reason i didnt come back the same way was time restraints.
had work the next day and it was a 5 hour drive home bud.
ill go lighter like everyone else next time i think
english say corn du and the welsh say corn dee

dude I'm with you on the BCB mug & lid I don't care how heavy it is I love it! light weight is very over rated just bust your ass & get in shape. these days everyone wants the easy option the light option bulls to that, my Father would carry tins of dog food for his great dane when hiking & he thought nothing of it! When I'm off for a week I rock a 25Kg pack not cos I think I''m hard but cos I like being sorted. I really don't know how people can go on long trips with 10 - 14Kg packs?
