Pretty scary. I spent 15 minutes in a lake in northern Ontario after my sled went through. When the sled went down my boot got caught in the cowling down I went. About 20-30 feet before I got my boot off and came back up to the surface. Where I grabbed the ice. Passed out and came to in the hospital. Someone came by and saved me. Needless to say I don’t ice fish any more and that was 30 years ago. Glad you made it.

This happened to me when I worked in Alaska at a fishing lodge wearing full clothes, boots, and rain gear. Only way I got out was I found a piling with barnacles on it for footing. There’s one super cheap fix that can save your life, and that’s a whistle around your neck. It takes less effort to blow a whistle than to yell and it’s easier to hear. I’m glad you’re ok and sounds like the big guy upstairs was watching out for you that day!

I fish by myself all the time, usually on the river, and I use to take a lot of stupid risks when I was younger. Now with a wife and 3 kids, I often find myself shaking my head and just getting back in my car and not throwing a cast lol. This vid just proves it can happen to anyone - anywhere, no matter how prepared u might think u are. Accidents happen, u can slip, lose your balance, etc. Its not because ur dumb or being unsafe, its just life. I just slipped last month on icy boulders, in the dark, by myself, shore fishing walleye and I've got a scar to prove it. Could've been worse, no one around, at night, and about 36 degree water. Thanks for sharing man. Just another reminder to b extra cautious, and avoid fishing alone as much as possible 👍 glad ur okay!! just. keep. casting.

@Michael Chapman No sir, he lived on the lake and had a permanent blind very close to his home. When he didn't return, his wife asked a neighbor to go look. They found him floating and his boat adrift. In the South, we don't have frozen lakes, just very cold water. We hunted and fished many times as kids and adults, and never thought something like that would happen to one of us. Especially in our mid 50's.

Man when you said people heard you screaming I almost cried. I had a similar situation but it was a flooded Creek bridge and my dumb sell decided to walk in front of the bridge and got sucked under. I ended up stuck under the bridge for about thirty or so seconds but when I came out the other side I got wedged in between two rocks. I could barley get a couple breaths because of the water splashing in my face. My brother was a few hundred yards down the creek and barley managed to hear me scream. If I had been alone I would have died. But when I saw him running I had a huge relief. I was stuck between the rocks for about thirty minutes. I never ended up going to the hospital. I just made my brother take me home on the four-wheeler and layed in bed for a day or so. I'm glad you made it through your experience man. Otherwise I never would have discovered your channel or Josh's channel. Love ya man keep making this killer ass content @milliken fishing

I know this was posted a while ago so no one will see it. I also am a die hard fishermen. I have had cancer twice, once at 18. After remission I got it again at 20. I am 25 now. The cancer I had was lymphoma. I ran through a glass door had my nose cut in half, a real joker smile cut into my face all the way through my cheek and my lower lip cut off. Along with having been hospitalized 3 times with pneumonia. Not light pneumonia bad life threatening. I went ice fishing a few years back on solid ice. There was a underwater current that cut the ice into a island that I was trapped on. I figured it was only a few feet to swim. So I threw all my gear across the gap and prepared to swim. (Too embarrassed to call for resucue) so I made the plunge, I was ok at first. But when you try to pull yourself back onto the ice it keeps breaking. I tried 10 times to get back onto solid ice before I turned around and went back to the island exhausted. Now I'm soaked and I can tell I'm going hyperthermic. I know now I can't call for rescue because my phone is on the other side. I know I have to jump back in for any chance strip all the wet clothes off besides my long underwear and T-Shirt, Do some jumping Jack's and jump back in. My arms froze I was unable to do anything but cling on the ice in front of me. It sucks the strength out of you. I could feel my legs going out. I was ready to give up and sink to my death. At the last minute one of the massive slabs of ice I broke trying to climb back up floated to my back feet. I pushed with my back legs and was able to get on the ice again. I layed flat to make surface area as I was taught and crawled until the ice was solid again. I left all my gear (fishing poles, a duffle bag of warm clothing, my auger, a bag with a couple trout..etc) and ran to my car to warm up. I assumed someone saw me and the fire department would come...it was a populated area. So I sat in my car warmed up and waited an hour...no one came. I would of died if I didn't get out. Out of everything I've been through that was the closest I've come to dying. By a long shot. Ice water is no joke..

I've seen so many people swear off things that scare them. That fear will paralyze you and keep you from doing some amazing things. My mom always taught me when the horse bucks you off don't give up just take the reins and hop back on. That's something I teach my kids and I am happy to know your doing the same thing. Glad you are safe and didn't lose any of your fingers or toes! Hell of a way to start the Christmas season! Keep fishing! Never give up! Love your videos! Take care!

Keep the passion alive and never let a bad experience scare you away. I had a near death experience last year while hunting. I was in an area I had never hunted before since I had just moved to the area a few months prior. But I was climbing up a somewhat steep hill that was covered in rocks and one of them shifted and gave way and when I fell I immediately let go of my shotgun like I was trained to do in the army in that situation. However I still landed on top of it with the business end of the barrel parallel to my body and about 4 inches from my ear. Now I will admit it was my fault for not having my safety on and when I landed on top of it it fired off barely missing the side of my head with a one ounce slug. Now as bad as that was I was so thankful that I had changed out my buck shot for the slug because if I had still had the buckshot in I would not still be here and I doubt anybody would have ever found me. But even after all that I was still out hunting the next day in the very same spot I had almost died the day before I knew that I had to get out and let my passion outweigh the fear because if I hadn't then I knew a big part of my life would have been missing and I would never be the same person without that passion.

been there myself, went Ice fishing on thin ice, knew it was just barely thick enough and it was above freezing this day. tied myself to a rope and the rope to a tree, went out drilled some holes everything was good went back got my sled and like an idiot tied my sled to rope (since I didnt wanna lose my gear). went back to fishing. Fished for about 15 mins than I noticed water starting to rise up out of the hole. first I thought it was funny than I realized the Ice was sinking and the water was only adding more weight to the thin ice. okay time to go, I went to move and Ice broke, myself and my sled go into the water. okay dont panic, get flat and pull myself up no problem, wrong the sled that I'm tied to filled with water and was pinned against the ice. I pull and break ice and pull and break ice, okay I can do this only 100 yards to go. as you mention after about 5 mins I'm spent, my mind says keep going but my body won't move. still calm I deceiced to push the rope down and try to clear myself from the rope. hands numbs, feet numb but I can tell its caught up in my boots. one hand on the rope the other hand trying to take my boots off or clear the rope. after a minute or two I'm done, I can't fight this dam rope any longer, I'm just gonna hold the rope till I cant. I'm gonna die because I wanted to catch some panfish, can't believe I was so stupid, okay one more try, reach down and realize my boot Is off and I'm clear from the rope, arms pull and I kick from some new found adrenaline, I get on top of Ice just barely, . feet and legs completely numb I can't stand, some one on shore watching this unfold the past minute or two tells me to hold the rope, I hold on and he pulls me to shore, helped me into my truck. I sat naked with some spare clothes laying on me a good hour with warm air blowing on me before I had enough strength to put on the dry clothes. to this day I can't believe 1 how fast my muscles locked up 2 how dumb I was and how lucky I got

Just listening to you talk about your experience and seeing your facial expressions was heart wrenching. I'm so glad you made it through and that your family still has you. I fish alone most of the time simply bc no one else is as obsessed with it as I am and it's a good lesson to learn about what can happen and how to push through. Never give up on your passion! Look forward to seeing you get your confidence back and get back out there, fish on!

This is a late but rather well wish hoping you continue to get better and go back fishing.
I am trained in artic survival. And one of the first things you learn is the buddy system. If you are fishing, make sure you have a buddy with you. It makes the trip more enjoyable, and adds a added layer of safety to your trip.
The second thing is learn the symptoms of hypothermia. And learn the symptoms of frost bite. There are great courses on how to treat these conditions on line and from the American red cross. Even though Milliken fell through the ice and suffered from hypothermia, you do not even have to fall into water to get cold to the point where your body tempature drops to life threatening levels. If you are not dressed for the conditions, that alone could harm you if the tempature is low enough.
    Some symptoms of hypothermia....
    1. Slurring or slurring of speech
    2. Acting confused
    3. Uncontrollable shaking and shivering
    4. Sleepiness
Treatment is done by giving person effected warm liquids, and warming the person by removing wet clothing, wrapping him in blankets or any thing warm. You can also do what is called buddy warming by having your buddy open coat and allowing you to hug them close.
    Frost bite.....
    1. Numbness of skin
    2. Redness of skin
    3. Hardness of area of skin effected
    4. Blistering
    5. In extreme cases, extremities effected by frost bite turns black, hard and may result in loss of life and or limb.
Treatment for frostbite is gradual warming of effective area. If your hands get frost bit, stick your hands under your arm pits, or in your crotch. Cover any blisters with a sterile dressing applied loosely
If you have buddy you, and your feet is frostbit, have your buddy open their coat and allow you to put your feet against thier body to warm them.
I hope what I posted here will help someone of they fall through the ice or is exposed to extreme cold temps .
And as always seek medical attention.
Thank you Mr. Milliken for all you do and Iook forward to watching more of the videos you post.

Had never capsized in my 40+ years, but did that day. The waders filled with water and I was sinking like a stone. I go cold thinking of it. So glad you made it out and can tell your story. I have a friend who got frostbite when he was younger, say 10-12 yrs old. To the point that his fingers turned dark purple. He has since mostly recovered. He is a great mechanic now. But, his side effects are that when his hands get even a little cold, they get super sensitive. More cold, they turn white, like there's no blood in em. Along with that sensitivity, is stinging, tingling, and stiffness. I hope you have a great recovery. I have nerve damage to a hand. Almost 20 years ago now, and my fingers are still partially numb, but it does slowly come back. Good luck, and I hope you, and everyone else can learn a lot here.

Like a true warrior, it is important to get back out there and conquer your fears, I started ice fishing a few years back and the thought of falling in is always in the back of my mind. I live in Idaho and if there is anything that I have learned from the sport of fishing the most important thing is that there is always a risk whether it is getting a hook in a finger or getting injured badly or having an accident, but you cannot let that stop you because if you do you are missing out on a lot and not stepping back outside and conquering your fears.

I'm glad you posted this clip, anything can happen on the water. I live in Juneau AK and I was out fishing for king salmon in my canoe in May and the weather was crappy and I should have gone to the shore to take a leak and I had an injured knee and tried to take care of things in the canoe in a little bucket I brought just for this issue. So I knelt down and my knee hurt so I favored one side of the canoe to relieve the pain and the canoe flipped over very slowly. All my gear was floating around me. I was a hundred or so yards from the rocks, so time to swim for it. I was wearing a float coat, but it was cold and about half way to the beach a guy ran up on me and drug me to the beach. I was 320lbs no way I was getting into the skiff until I got to the beach. So he took me to the ramp and I stripped into dry clothes in my truck and drove home thinking of my girls and wife feeling stupid and blessed at the same time. It puts things into perspective that is for sure. A buddy of mine and the guy that fished me out brought my gear home and I had to give the canoe away. A fare compromise on my wife's part for me to go on the water in something bigger. But again it goes to show no matter how much time you are on the water shit happens and hopefully your prepared for the worse so you can ring out your clothes and get back out there to catch some more fish what ever the species is. Safe fishing and glad you shared this one. Been a fan for a few months of you and the stash man!! Keep fishing hard guys!!! I'm going out now for some trout before things freeze up here!
