Great video. The first one is also slower because you must load the pushing foot first and move in the opposite direction. When you use gravity this isn't needed so instead of having to use 2 movements you're doing it in one.
I started learning karate in 9th grade and reached state level but due to my studies I could not continue but still I'm practicing it because I love karate
Its a great application using gravity to gain speed, but using Kogeki #4 foot displacement is much quicker and effective for both advancing and retreating. Also, it allows you to cut 45 degree angles as you retreat. No matter how fast you are you can not move backwards faster than someone can advance on you
Could you do a show on ankle attacks? It's taught for self defense, it's in karate, but few address it. If the ankle is gone, stay out of range, there's nothing that can be done.
I train both Isshin-Ryu as well as Tang Soo Do. My Sah Bum Nim is on vacation next month as I will be covering for him. I intent to demonstrate and train this with the kyu ranks while he is gone because of its value. Domo arigato.
nice video! Your explanations are really helpful. Wondering if you would consider revisiting the okinawan sensei that taught shoggen ryu? Their movements and teaching were amazing to me. Your movements are getting similar to what they were teaching too! so it would be lovely to see you meet those sensei again :)

Good for you. What is state level though?
Actually at first we go for district level tournament then we are selected for state level and finally we have national level tournament
All those little details a good karateka has to be aware of. Good reminder. Thank you!
I seemed to unconsciously pick up dropping the knee up from doing stance switches. And seeing my senpai doing their more advanced kata.
Maybe that was intentional... but I doubt I'll ever know.
