In this video Neill showcases a brand new cycling shoe that has just hit the market. Neill has been riding and testing this shoe for the last few months and has been quite amazed at the improvements this shoe has given him. After being a little skeptical about the theory Neill seems to be a convert...

Weight is roughly 600g a pair (for a 42.5 ish size).
thats way to heavy
In my 49 that probably means something like 1.2kg ...
That's 300g per shoe, which is right inline and comparable with many established race shoes.
@@StephanDrake-hf4kf 150-200g heavier ...
Is that with the removable power strap? What's the weight of that?
I think Lore should hire Neil as launch spokesman. Because he had me sold. Just need to sell a kidney to afford them.
Amazing tech.
$1300 to $1850 USD for those that are wondering about price.
last time i checked, the fastest time up alpe d'huez was done with toe straps
I buy a bike for that price...
USD or AUD?
Madness
Top track bikes are usually around 20 to 40K, so it's no surprise a pair of shoes cost this much.
Cam, 100% Neil is having a lend. First he has you with the condor seat and now these. 😂
hahaha!
I am not denying the benefit of the custom fit, however they look like orthopaedic shoe meets balenciaga sneaker meets tactical crocs. Grateful that my Fiziks are perfect fit (I know that's not a common experience) because they look very sleek.
That's like the Indurain era Time two strap shoes I used to wear. They fit as though Time had broke into my house while I was asleep and took molds of my feet without waking me up. Sadly, those shoes eventually wore out.
Can't unsee this. My Bonts, over there in the corner, are eyeing me with worried looks.
First thought: Batman has taken up cycling
😂
I use to use duct tape around my shoes heel and my ankle and strap it like I footy player around my lower ankle before races and mtns… did a really good time for my standard up mt buffalo and all the benefits Neil is saying I felt by the tape added. It’s a cheap way to see if you like or want to experience what it feels like use shoes like this. I might start doing it again as it feels great and efficient.
Hell Yes! Finally out of the Victorian Era contraption disaster shoes...a new way of thinking about how a shoe should be designed and how it transfers energy to a pedal. Chapeau Neill, thank you for this video.
Maybe in the future all shoe purchases will be from foot scans.. making custom shoes standard practice.
@@matthewkramer8613 One can hope
Neat. I could see this being very useful for mountain biking too, since there are lots of moments when you have to "spin up" the pedals or rapidly put down power to clear obstacles. Custom made gear is really exciting.
Thank you for the "lore" on these shoes.....
Mountain bikers should first worry about finding a more aero kit than flanal and stop taking smoke breaks in-between efforts.
@@roadcyclist1 I am talking about mostly xc racing, and those are a different crowd. Most of them went in to gravel.
I think I heard that a mtn version will be coming eventually
Hoping to see more brands make foot shaped shoes with wider toe boxes like a barefoot shoe. These are going to be out of reach for me until prices come down though.
Same.
I’m pretty much locked to Sidi Mega shoes atm
Shoes by Quoc have quite a roomy toe box. Not necessarily the widest shoe overall, but roomy where it matters for normal feet.
@@markj.a351 Same, not even Lakes were wide enough for me
Just buy Bont
prices will not come down very much. The way these shoes are designed they can only be "bespoke" tailored, they must be made around one specific foot, no serial production possible - and therefore they will always be expensive
That's awesome. Super expensive, ofc, but I'm very familiar with 3d printing but their robot is the next level after the next level, and you've got to amortize that thing. Then it's got to take hours and hours of robot time, so you can only make one at a time. Then you've got to pay for the scan rigs at bike fitters'. And in materials costs alone, they probably spend several times more than your typical competition. And it's in California where everything costs an arm and leg in the first place.
So I'm not buying a pair, but I'm not the target audience anyway. Will be interesting to see results over two years, because I don't think many shoe companies will start using 4 axis 3d printing robots anytime soon, and 5-10pc sprint increases should lead to a lot of wins. Then number of podiums should do the talking for them. Very nice innovation.
Agreed on all counts. The robot looks insanely complex, and it apparently took quite a lot of development to get the carbon stranding to come out neatly, sit down and glue itself in place ready for the next pass in time. Complex stuff! - N
@@roadcyclingacademy There was an insane amount of experimenting, testing, problem solving and innovating to resolve robotic print path issues.
Um sorry guys but deeeeer, bare foot shoes hve been out for ages with flat sole, no arch, wide toe box. I've been waiting for a cycle shoe maker to make barefoot cycling shoes. After wearing barefoot shoes for a couple of years now, my cycle shoes feel so tight on the toes. Also wearing barefoot shoes freed up my ankle and now that has great ROM again. Time for Shimano etc to jump on board as the next big thing.
you did not understand the principle of this shoe...
An assessment with Assiomas cycling dynamics power and peak power phase would interesting
Yes!
It will be interesting to see what the long term use will be for the cyclist. The foot is meant to be used in human gait, but in cycling the foot lacks feedback from metatarsals to the ankle, hence why arch support is important in cycling shoes. I wonder how limiting ankle movement/flexibility, will affect the cyclist (specifically the knee,) with limited hip mobility. On another note, these shoes seem to attempt mimic, what the Norwegian power pedal did back in the 90s.
There is no limit in the ankle dorsiflexion with the LoreOne or LoreTwo. The LoreOne acts as a top down foot support. There is less of that in the LoreTwo, which does include arch support with a modular systems similar to G8.
What about your cleat position? It looks like your cleats are more forward. Which is fine if you're not heel dropping anymore, but it definitely contributes to better sprint, riding in a bunch etc.
Was wondering about Neil's opinion on barefoot shoes vs arch support in conventional shoes, hopefully other brands start to mimic the minimalist form factor soon
Barefoot shoes all the way if your foot is healthy enough to do its own thing. Some people's feet are beyond that stage and require major rehab before they can operate in barefoot shoes in my experience sadly. - N
This shoe + Selle SMP saddle = combo wombo
You forgot those RR Coefficient Bars
These shoes seem very interesting to me.. I recently got some G8 insoles and this transformed my Sidi shoes into a more effective power riding my Xc mtb. I feel like my efficiency is so much better.. these shoes look even next level to even G8s. They look like biking custom ski boots. This type of efficiency almost feels like you have an extra gear, much like difference of riding clipped in vs standard peddles. Very cool!
great analogies. Several levels above adding G8 insoles.
Extra long flat pedals might work similar - Pedaling Innovations Catalyst Pedals 🧐
Anteloper shoes as used by Dutch track sprinters are moulded around your feet but with carbon. Sounds like the same principles apply.
question is, will they bring out a full white version...
on a serious note, it is great to see real innovation in cycling shoe design.
The white top/black bottom looks nice on the Lore2 images I reckon! - Neill
Not really... I mean 99% of people won't ever spend the money to buy that and for generations we've managed with normal cycling shoes, find your brand and size and you should be good. As we always have been. This is overengineered.
Would love to see this in track events in the Olympics!
Antiloper shoes in the Netherlands. Same principle, just different execution.
@@Gabrielle4870 nah mate. Those are more similar to the ones made by the likes of Adam Hansen and Simmons Racing. Those are through and through carbon shoes for track-use.
@@ariffau so tell me why the principle is different?
Without wanting to read too much into a small sample size, there is a noticeable improvement in your outputs with Bront shoes along the intervals. Could it be that the intervals with the Lores somehow "teach" better core foot/heel dynamics that in turn improve your usual shoe outputs too ?
I've literally theorized about this for a year. I ride with barefoot minimalist shoes for awhile. Over time I've found that tightening higher up on the laces, closer to the ankle works better. The only downside is the flexibility of all minimalist shoes. You are really forced to strengthen your foot to pedal with minimalist barefoot shoes.
I always wondered what it would be like to have a rigid sole.
If anyone knows of a comprehensive mid-foot position study then please do share. It seems with going wider, flatter and support from the top like shown here it would be best to find out how a true mid-foot position would help etc. I understand it would throw off the bike geometry a bit but it would still be super interesting.
Appears to function a bit like a ski boot in that it’s rigid all around.
Ventilation looks 10/10.
Almost too breezy in winter, have to double sock - N
Right ? First thing i thought, too. For the sweaty feet people like me, that is a selling point all to itself \o/
@@nadiabentuler9746 Same, my dogs run hot... I wear thongs (flops) 90% of the time. Not worried about winter because I'll just wear booties/covers.
Any idea how long these might last as that is important for the average person with the cost?
More power because not heel dropping? More calf engagement?
I have very bad feet from years of cycling/racing..I can't ride more than 2 hours with out having to stop pedaling..I've even stopped by rivers and soaked my feet to get home..I go through shoes every year, Bont and Lake,s because of their custom widths..I would pay the high price to have a painless ride and just be done with it...
I'll be tempted when they come in white colour ;-)
They do. Check their site.
Personally, when I order Narrow Bonts and mould the front and the heel cup I reckon I'm at least half way if not further in achieving the same. I just use the flat factory sole.
At least Neill is honest but where does the whole arch support for perception etc fit in now? It sounds like it really is just to make up for ill fitting shoes?
I think you should be able to determine some of the gains Neill talks about (power transfer, overall efficiency etc) from pedalling dynamics data.
As for the power gains, seems like you'd lose half of that in aerodynamic loss: these are not sleek 😊
Would u considering a non carbon soled carbon shoe ??
Lately I’ve bought a non carbon fizik Tri shore but in my middle and long distance rides/races I do no sprints and so… so they fine
Now I ve want to retire my to old carbon road shoes… now I’m wondering if carbon is worth it
For something else than My carbon addiction..??
So what you're saying is if I can get my sprint to 1800w in my sloppy Giro $200 shoes then I should be able to get close to cracking 2kW? If I had more money than brains I'd be on it!
Very interesting and amazing cycling tech, but for approx AUD$2,100 (nylon version) to AUD$2,900 (carbon version) plus GST they'd want to pedal for me at the very least.
I thought that also, but then I remember that 50% of my regular riding buddies have wheelsets that cost more than that, and don't really make them any more comfortable or faster, so relatively speaking I think the Bang-for-Buck equation isn't as bad as it could be! - Neill
I have been wondering when a minimalist style cycling shoe was gonna come out! Ive been rocking zero support shoes for years now and when i picked up cycling i heard nothing but massive arch support shoes. They are not my favorite. I do not however have that much money for a set of cycling shoes.
Ill wait til the white one comes out haha!
Hi Neil, can you do some testing between your lakes and these Lore shoes showing pedal smoothness? I am making an assumption that these should increase you smoothness % a little?
Anyone tried this vs. the Simmons racing? I'm torn tbh and may prefer Simmons for cleaning reasons.
Will they make a mtb/gravel version with soles for walking?
in development now in the LoreTwo version
If a top ten world pro cyclist uses these shoes and then has back up data to show that they have tangible benefits then it's a revolutionary product.
that is a work in progress. Keep in mind most world class cyclists will already have a shoe sponsor, and cannot be seen in something else.
I was poised to order (having 2 completely different feet!) then I got to the checkout. Currently they cost more than my bike. Might have to wait for the AliExpress version😂
Neil knows his stuff but this reminds me "jumping shoes" George Costanza got to play basketball
Strength Shoes were 100% legit. My brother gained a bananas amount of vertical using strength shoes back in the day.
Was thinking about buying these for years but I found a good deal on a pair of Mavic Comete Ultimate shoes and as long as those fit you they are basically these shoes but better
no, they are different; the Mavics look much better of course and they are much lighter - but they are not custom made for your feet, in fact they made it in fewer variations than their normal shoes, and that's exactly it's biggest minus
Get some of these into the hands (or Feet) of the Australian BMX Olympic Team.
Does Neil have any thoughts on the Mid vs Low cut they are offering?
Hey mate these are the Lore 1 that I have, the new lore 2 was launched a few days ago coincidentally, I've got some coming but haven't seen them yet! - Neill
@@roadcyclingacademy yes, the lore 2 which is now available for order on the website, however you can order and a “Mid” which looks more like the Lore 1 and a “Low” version that looks more like a traditional shoe. I plan to order a pair not sure which one. Will be curious as to which version they are sending you.
The LoreTwo mid cut capture some of the power transfer that the LoreOne offers. The LoreTwo low cut is more about custom comfort and less about power transfer.
Sadly the toe box doesn't look roomy enough for me. I was in Lake CX403 wide but then switched to Vaypor S wide, because my feet are used to wide toeboxes in normal shoes but sadly most cycling shoes want to squish your toes together in a shape which should probably look a bit aerodynamic or slim and light weight.
Mate they are custom made, so it doesn't matter how weird your foot is, they will fit perfectly. - Neill
@roadcyclingacademy6476 yeah, thanks for the info. Didn't watch a lot of the video yet during the comment. That's great
@roadcyclingacademy6476 although I gotta add, that I don't have weird feet. Rather I have started caring about my foot-health a couple years ago and find it frustrating, that cycling shoes are the only thing, where also the more anatomical and wide offerings usually squeeze in your toe area
why on earth do people always write stupid comments without viewing the video?????
Did I seriously hear him correctly that he can't do more than 600 watts seated without those shoes? I feel better! 16 months out from heart surgery and I can do close to 900 now seated. Now admittedly I'm probably 10cm taller than he is and 25kg heavier, but still....1,000 seated here we come. I might think about these shoes once I have exhausted all other options, but we're not close to that yet.
Was there a break-in period?
there is no break in period however the heat moldable pads will continue to conform more to your feet at you ride.
Proper fitting shoes every time?! No more numb toes or hot spots, sign me up 🥳
Numb toes or hot spots may be a sign of a bike fit that's slightly off
Judging by you recommendation of the SQ Lab saddles I will stay well clear of these shoes.....for a start they look an absolute nightmare to clean !
cleaning is easy. Rinse under a tap. Leave to dry. done.
It will be interesting to see how many Olympains will use these this year.
Looking forward to people complaining about the high price. The way I see it: they are not meant to be accessibly priced, and they can't be due to how much they likely cost to make. This shoe is for professionals and semi-professionals where it may actually have an impact on results and therefore money generation, thus a justified purchase. Complaining about these being too expensive is like complaining about the price of a McLaren; not built for the average consumer. I love that there are boutique options like this out there regardless of the cost.
If they last a long time (and they might), maybe the price would be even more justifiable for the incredible performance.
@lawrencefalk8714 agreed, the longevity is yet to be seen, but definitely something to be factored in!
@@lawrencefalk8714
Uhhh?
What incredible performance?
The shoes have not been released to market yet - it is only a projection.
@@johnd1727 Neill's feedback and data is very promising, not at all conclusive due to it being n=1, but if forthcoming data backs it up - it is a huge performance increase, relative to many other bike upgrades.

I've asked Neill. Will pin a comment shortly. Thanks for the pick up.
website says one size 10 US (43) shoe is 315g
About 9 months…
Neill stated that he walks barefoot most of the time, and so does Colby Pierce. I believe that their feet are not the normal cyclists' feet. Not sure that the normal cyclist would have the same experience without first strengthening and training the foot to go barefoot.
Foot training not required. Barefoot and barefoot shoes are super flexible. The LoreOne is a fully rigid exoskeleton for the feet, so the shoe provides the strength more than the feet
Wow nice shoes , 3D printed saddles and now shoes , hopefully the prices comes down and they can just sell normal sized ones for people with good feet , without the custom price

@@JohnnyRabbitQC thank you very much
Gonna be interesting to see these kind of shoes popping up on pros.
They are in the very final stages of development/early stages of release and testing, but if the new Lore2 is as good as the Lore1, they will make their way into the worldtour pretty quick I would imagine. The power testing doesn't lie! - Neill
Adam Hansen did something similar, but he used layered carbon innstead of 3d printing.
@@roadcyclingacademy Neill, would this something to be considered with a similar foot size discrepancy Karl has? Taking price out of the equation, from a pure fitting perspective. I'm kinda inclined to spend this kind of money on something that would fix my shoe issues once and for all.
Very open airflow. Could get cold in the winter
yes - shoe covers are needed for cold temp riding.
Will the next innovation be a boot with ankle support? Lets say, a "moon boot" style shoe to almost completely lock your leg and ankle...
This is crazy. So weird. Totally want some but not anytime soon 😂
Cams got the Rich guy laugh
Looks like a Borg shoe ... Lore ... Ooohh!
Who knew that cramming your toes into a tiny toe box creates instability, discomfort and more load through the arch of your foot. It's been endlessly frustrating me for a decade about how our shoes are shaped.
I've been desperately waiting for someone to make a cycling shoe that's actually designed to fit a real foot like Lems, Altra, Topo, and Xero shoes have done. Too bad I can't afford these.
I think Neill is a fan…..
Nothing like showcasing a black shoe against a black shirt and a black box.....
Oh nice, the new Yeezy is out..
Id consider this purely because of a custom shoe to fit my wide flat feet
The best shoes I have ever worn are the Rapha Pro Team.
What’s the likelihood of this race and Olympics winning tech that increases athlete performance to an unprecedented 5% to not show up with elite athletes and teams but with TH-cam influencers?
When it seems too good to be true…
Mate they have only just been released to the public about 5 days ago......
@@roadcyclingacademy at least this video shows that Neil knows how to read since his impressions are verbatim the shoe website content. Even the 5% increase claim.
I actually respect his bike fitting knowledge but this kind of advertising is doing no good to anyone.
But since they are just released i guess we are still going to see them winning on the Olympics and at the tour boosting those elite performances by unprecedented 5%!!
Spiderman called
inb4 the shoes somehow made your power meter less accurate haha, like how people used to think oval chainrings gave them more power when it turned out they made most power meters give over inflated readings by a couple percent.
So replacing the structure of the foot with a carbon external prosthetic - this explains the lack of an arch support, or the need for it. Much like the new carbon plate running shoes, the gains are made by removing losses inherent in the human body. There are gains to be made, the engineer in me is all about efficiency in power transfer, but frustrated bike fitter in me hates this idea. In a world where 0.1% of the riders out there can make use of aero advantages of new bikes, 60% of the bikes come with proprietary stems and internal brake routing, making fitting a royal pain.
I never thought someone could make a shoe uglier than Bonts!!!!!
They cost more than my bike, unfortunately these are a 1%er shoe.

Bonts weigh 1/3 of these shoes...
@@marcvb3364 no they don't. They weigh approximately the same.
@@StephanDrake-hf4kf They do. These shoes weigh over 600g for the pair, and that's without insoles. Just watch the video instead of writing shit, Neil says it.
@@marcvb3364 Hi, you referenced the Bonts as weighing 1/3 of these. That would imply that a single Bont in a 42-43 weights 100g, which isn't correct. Of course there is a bunch of variance per model within the range, but most Bonts are in the neighborhood of 230-260g (460-520g/pair) at this size vs 300g (600g/pair as Neil says) for the LoreOne. Thus the weight difference per shoe is roughly speaking 40-70g, which is negligible in terms of performance, and especially given higher efficiency and force transfer. The LoreOne is lighter than a Lake CX403, for further reference, which is 315g (630g) for a 39.
