  • I had to go back several times to make sure I didn't already highlight this plant, because I can't believe I almost forgot about it! It's in the back corner of one of my higher shelves along with many of my hoya and Philodendrons, so it was well camouflaged. This is #264 of "365 Days of Plants".
    In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
    You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

    I just wanted to say that this entire series has been so helpful to me! I was just given one of these as a gift from a planty friend, but I had no clue how to care for it. Thank you Summer, even though the series is over, you have created an amazing resource for plant collectors!

    Hi Summer, great job (like always)! 😊 I've had a question for quite some time now, which maybe could be even an idea for a future video (?). Since I studied medical genetics and human biology, I've always asked myself how the taxonomic classification (class/order/family/genus/species) is created for plants, considering how extremely complex this kingdom is. To be more clear, let's take for example this anthurium: it definitely doesn't resamble a classical anthurium in its leaf/stem structure, but still it is classified as an anthurium: how?
    Or, another example, now Sansevieria have move to Dracaena: based on what new find/data? Genomic mapping?
    I read that sometimes botanical classification is based on flower morphology, sometimes on plant 'anatomy', other times on genomics, etc... However, how (=based on what) exactly botanists determine families, species, move plants in new families, etc... is still mostly a mistery to me.
    Is out there a good video you would suggest me to satisfy my curiousity? If not, maybe it would be very interesting to do an interview with a botanist in a real lab and see the science behind our beloved plants :)

      ps: there are many aroids, including other anthuriums, with leaves like this. it seems to me that the genetic mechanism behind it might be present even in species that do not express it, like how humans still have genetics for gills. sometimes as these plants evolve they will turn genes on and off as needed, but still retain much of the damaged "turned off" genes to be reactivated by future mutations.

    • @ongwehias7580
      @ongwehias7580 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ps ps: most taxonomy for plants was made up centuries ago by some doods who thought that flies spontaneously generated out of meat when it was exposed to air.

      True true 😅 It woukd be interesting how modern botanics deals with the old classification, which markers investigates to assess families, etc... In other words, how humans are try to make sense out of the oldest and most complex kingdom... So intriguing to me! 😁

    Its leaves look similar to a money tree to me (Pachira aquatica). I guess they're not related at all, and the similarity in the leaves is just coincidental. Do you have a money tree?

    I`ve had my anthurium polyschistum for almost 3 months now. It started developing a new leaf which really doesn`t seem to grow at all. Out of fear it might burn I`ve put it in a darker corner. It`s developed healthy roots and gets it`s ferts but still isn`t really growing. I think I`ll try to give it a little more light, I`m just super caucious with these mid to low light loving tropical plants, since my flat has mostly south facing windows. They`re not very forgiving. Thanks a lot for the info on this gorgeous plant, can`t wait for mine to vine out like that eventually.

    I love that this is a funky looking plant and like you said doesn't really look like it's an Anthurium, but has been classified into this family. thanks Summer for once again another very interesting plant, see you tomorrow.

    There is something about your plants. It seems like they all have the same shade of green. I bet if you put out three of the same plants and only one of those plants came from your beautiful collection, I would be able to tell you whIch plant grew in under your roof.

    My tweed struggles. Doesn't like to be moved or planted in heavy soil. Mites love it and it needs to be sprayed regularly. This spring I'm going to try a moss pole ; )
