Usually I have mixed feelings hearing a fortepiano, but this was perfect. This was chamber music at its best. Schubert and the three of you played as one. Congratulations for the technicians who captured the performance. The sound quality is stunning, and the videography allowed us into the chamber, seeing just what we wanted to see, without distracting. I thank you, and I'm sure Schubert is smiling.
Well said! It´s good to acknowledge the artistic contribution of those behind the scenes, who bring as much dedication and love of music as the performers.
Oh my!! I'm :33 seconds into this performance and immediately struck with the beautiful architecture, astounding acoustics and the talent of the musicians already amazing me. I diverge and continue to watch and enjoy.....
One of my favorite works; this magnificent performance brough a clarity with each instrument and layer enunciated so beautifully I felt like I was truly hearing it for the first time. Bravo!
Maybe the best rendition of this work I've ever heard. Kudos to the sound engineer, too. Edit: Today I've just listened to this performance again. I'm enthralled.
The Andante con moto at 16:33 is one of the most beautiful movements I ever heard! Three highly qualified musicians play music by a highly qualified composer. What a joy to listen to this!
A question, and an observation.... When you are performing at this level... And I have only experienced it twice... Does the audience, and the entire world just disappear? Do you disappear into the music? Are you disappointed to have to re_emerge into the world, drawn back from heaven by applause?
The rich orchestration and complexity of classical compositions are awe-inspiring. It's remarkable how a symphony or a concerto can convey a wide range of emotions and stories through its intricate melodies and harmonies.
On this Forte Piano we can read: Christoph Kern Fortepiano-Macher Staufen im Breisgau Ich will gern send this Christoph a message, if he is still alive, to tell him what a wonderful Forte Piano he has made, and to tell him that his piano now can be heard all over the world.
Is that almost understandable?
It looks like a fairly recent company that started in 1992, so I would hazard to say that the builder probably is still alive, and probably would even build one for your own living room if you so desired to have one commissioned. I'm guessing by the price being only available on request that only well-heeled customers need apply.

One of the most beautiful settings I’ve ever seen. The white interior, draped with crystal chandeliers overhead, gold and baby blue detailed masonry to accompany the art works on the walls and ceiling are absolutely mesmerising. The grandest of musical instruments catches the eye and the ears fill with a godly voice as if you’re standing at the gates of heaven yourself..
I heard these three artists play the Beethoven triple concerto and loved it. Nice to hear them as a trio. This Schubert work is just sheer joy and they keep it that way right through. The piano sounded well suited to this work. Thank you all. Mendelssohn's trios please? Incredible ?Baroque setting.
This exceptional work serves as compelling evidence of Schubert's premature demise. Considering the composition's brilliance at the age of 30, one can only fathom the extraordinary musical achievements he might have accomplished had he been granted a longer lifespan. It is conceivable that he could have even surpassed the legendary stature of Beethoven.
Schubert is considered as representing genius in music, I have read. "If genius is defined as one who thinks faster and better than others, then Schubert is one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived". (Note that it is not "one of the greatest musical geniuses", but "one of the greatest geniuses").
He surpasses Beethoven. Beethoven is great, but compared to Schubert he seems to be one of us people from Planet Earth. In my opinion only Bach and Schubert went beyond our nature to create music, that experienced musicians or listeners feel has utter importance and somehow seems divine.
One of the most beautiful Schubert Piano Trio 2! I looked up for a recording and didn’t find. We should have a recording of this incredible ensemble in the market!!!
I have often returned to listen to this version of Schubert's second Piano Trio. I think this is an absolutely excellent, unprecedented interpretation of this great work! Well-characterized, nuanced playing that beautifully brings out the subtle nuances and details of the music while preserving Schubert's introverted intuitiveness and sensitivity of his music. Moreover, the huge architecture of the work maintain its linearity throughout. Even among the best recordings of this work, I have found no real point of comparison for this interpretation! Best recommendations for this one and big thanks to the performers!
It's interesting to hear this masterpiece played not only so well but much as it would have sounded in Schubert's day, with a fortepiano and with natural gut strings on the violin and cello.
Using a fortepiano solves a lot of problems for the modern Schubert pianist. Schubert's textures are often quite thick and can get very soupy on a Steinway. It's a lot of work to clarify the music. It's even more difficult in chamber music where you also have to work hard not to overpower your colleagues. With a fortepiano, much of that work is unnecessary.
@@jimp4170 Jim, there you are right! But on the other hand, I have never reacted on too thick texture in Schuberts piano music. Not even on a Steinway.
I'm disappointed to learn they used gut strings. it feels in this day and age we should be passed such things. the performance is wonderful, nonetheless
@@richardhunter132 The gut strings go with the fortepiano. If they had used modern strings (steel or synthetic core) the sound would have been too powerful for the fortepiano. So gut strings tend to go along with fortepianos while modern strings are used with the more powerful pianofortes. In fact, even modern strings can have trouble holding their own against a modern Steinway. There's room for both approaches. For Schubert I too prefer modern instruments but I can understand why some people prefer to hear the music as it would have sounded to Schubert. Incidentally, some responders below don't think the strings are gut. If so, then a period fortepiano can indeed hold its own against modern strings. I don't think the same is true with period harpsichords. There are great performances that pair modern string instruments with harpsichords, like Arthur Grumiaux's recordings of the Bach violin-keyboard sonatas with Christiane Jaccottet's harpsichord, but Grumiaux's violin seems to me to overpower the harpsichord.
What a fantastic ensemble. There's a lot of textural restraint to the playing that allows the melodies to sound cheerful but not saccharine. I don't know if this is an interpretive mainstay of this piece, but notice Sol Gabetta's steely, non-vibrato color at 7:48 which made that section seem appropriately eerie and mysterious.

Wow, the tone of this piano is so characteristic 🌟
The ever so elegant and sensitive Schubert! Gratitude to the wonderful musicians for this incredible performance

Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta superb. The other performers also played marvellously. In short a very fine rendition of the Schubert s trio.

Quite so. Graphic, thus, granular clarity.
This must be a late fortepiano, closer to the sound to a piano but still maintaining the softer timbre of the fortepiano.

Top notch playing. Best sound yet. Congrat to the engineer. All instruments are distinctive and bright, none overwhelming another.
