I went down that rabbit hole a few years back. Now I carry a small flipper that fits in my 5th pocket, a tiny rechargeable flashlight on my keychain with 2 keys, phone, wallet, pew and a nice watch. I have a small edc bag with tools and everything else I want to carry in my car as no matter where I am its typically not far away. the other day stopped by a buddies whose always going on about EDC and he was standing out in the cold with a dead battery and a low tire asking me for a jump so he could go get air in his tire. I showed him my Lithium Jump Starter Box, Car Battery Booster Pack and roadside air compressor and told him he could of had both for less then he paid for a pen he never uses when his phone can take notes.
So I’m a tradesman by profession and all my hobbies and whatnot relate. What you said about multi-tools, so freaking spot on. I’ve carried and more importantly used a multi tool on nearly a daily basis for near 15 years now. The overwhelming majority of prepped/edc/tactical type dudes I see reviewing or using these things on TH-cam or real life very clearly have office jobs and don’t actually use tools for a living. No judgement man. That’s fine if it’s your jam and makes you happy, but why lug around a 7-10 ounce brick if you can’t/don’t use it? A Victorinox Tinker or some such would serve you well for a lot less scratch, space and weight and I can do a lot more with a little Victorinox Cadet or a Tinker than the average edc guy can probably do with a bag of actual tools. This dude here is dispensing some solid wisdom. I’m not some bushcraft/survival knife expert guy, so I don’t carry 36 knives and a saw everywhere I go because I simply don’t have a use base to justify wasting my time with those tools whereas they may make a lot of sense for a dude who works for the forest service or works on a ranch or just likes to be out in the woods a lot.
SPOT ON! Though I won’t like, the leather man on my harness does come in handy sometimes when I drop shit out the mewp 😂 and the amount of packaging we have to cut though the knife on it’s pretty handy. Rather have it than not.
There is definitely a relation between the guys that feel the need to have a very elaborate edc while also having an office job and then you meet guys that have extremely demanding tool needs and they carry nothing on there person and keep everything in their work truck. It’s funny how there is this counter intuitive reality.
Good points. I like victorinox forester. Corkscrew. Bottle opener. Main knife. Second knife I can do without. Saw is good for cutting rope. Which I do far more often than I expected I ever would! But it’s a decent size. And good for improvisational use. I carry a backpack full of tools. I don’t need the same gear in my pockets. I have a knife in my pocket because I’m a knife nerd. I have a flashlight in my pocket because I spend more time under desks than sitting at them. I had a ranger without a saw. Liked it but found the saw too useful.

They had every kind gear imaginable: expensive knives, state of the art multitools, waterproof boots, portable spotlights, portable stoves, backpacks filled to the brim... Their guide had a tramontina machete and flipflops.
Totally agree with you on everything except the fixed blade and multi tool. I carry a small edc fixed blade on me everyday. As I simply prefer a fixed blade over a folder. And as an long time hunter a multi tool is a must for me it has saved me many times. Other then that keep up the great work and keep the awesome videos coming. I love watching your videos.
Nice comment dude, in my line of work and being on a farm I would say I use my leatherman wave+ weekly and pocket knives work but also there’s something bad-booty about carrying a decent sized to big fixed blade😃, sturdy-ness and simply reliable👍🏻😁
I was also going to make a comment about the fixed blades. I keep a mora knife in my EDC bag for any tasks that require a little more sturdiness than a folder can offer. I don't have to worry about a fixed blade having lock failure and folding back on my fingers and that gives me peace of mind. 95% of the time I can get away with my pocket folder but if I have to cut a hole in a bucket or cut some zip ties (or rapid deployment for self defense) the fixed blade is the go to.
Same. Leatherman Signal and switch between the Amtac Northman or Dynamis double edged fixed blade. The blade to filet, the tool to suture and explain why it had to happen. 🇺🇸
Exactly, no idea why he would say a folding knife is safer, fixed blades are absolutely safer being less likely to fail on you for whatever reason, you dont need some massive rambo knife with ya all the time but i frequently use my bradford 3.5 drop point
I use a multitool, pen and paper every day..but I'm a weirdo lol. But I also stopped carrying a folding knife (unless I'm reviewing it) because I found I almost never use them over my multitool. The only thing I don't use a multitool blade for often is food related tasks.
I’m a middle aged guy and started “every day carrying” before there was a name for it. I started carrying Surefire in 1989, Spyderco in 1990, Sig in 1997 and Leatherman in 1987. Through the years I “evolved” with the industry and fell into many of the trends etc. buying and carrying many of the things mentioned in the video. But after 36 years of edc’ing and thousands in trends, I’m back to the few things I started with because I daily carry and use them. Added a MontBlanc pen received as a gift for my job, a minimalist wallet and grandads’ silver money clip and I’ve found it’s all I need. Good video. Subscribed.
I’m glad somebody said this! Although I do carry a compass in my bag but it’s because it was my grandpas compass that he carried in the war and gave to me. Don’t really use but live seeing it every time I get in my bag.

This video was pretty funny. Especially the grappling hook segment. Sounds like you were in some kind of mood. 😄 I work for a company that maintains some janitorial accounts so I think that gives the extra jingle jangle on my key ring a pass. Maybe. Current keyring extras are a 2" folding carabiner knife (used semi-regularly), small nail clippers (used regularly...hangnails!) + pepper spray (sometimes I can't sleep and work or wander around in the dead of night). I have to carry pen and paper because otherwise I will write up the palm of my hand and, at times, the top of my hand. Too many thoughts, to-do's, and ideas. Looks horrid, too. Especially when I use permanent marker. 😂 You should do more of these videos. I am so sick of all the end of the world / nuclear war garbage.
Great practical advice ! have to agree, i dont carry half that stuff and the stuff I do carry has purpose. Use it everyday! Carry what you use! not what you think you might use and practice with what you have. Sometimes I just carry a edc wallet pouch and a Victorinox for the day. EDC changes from day to day. Most used items for myself are a multitool (scissors mostly and saw for work-philips & Slotted), Pen light combo, Battery bank. Sometimes I just cut out a battery bank since more of my gear lasts a day or a duration until i get to a usb recharge port either at a computer at work or in my car. When out working in the woods my edc changes and some cases drastically.
Something that few people should have in a EDC those box cutter knives. You will use it a lot and if it dulled just switch the blade. I find that I use it more for cutting things than I use my other knives.
I use my multitools every day, and I am glad to have them with me. I am also one to carry many knives, including fixed blades. For the average person that edc's I understand what you are saying, but not everyone wants to be a minimalist.
Pen: I use a pen almost every day at work, and I've found it helpful outside of work. I prefer to use 3x5 cards rather than a notebook. Multitool: I don't go anywhere without my swiss army knife. My basic EDC: swiss army knife, flashlight, pen, wallet, phone, microfiber lens cloth. Easy-peasy.

Pouch carrying is a money pit but it’s fun to hunt down all the patches and pocket trash from small batch makers on IG. I don’t need any of it but I want it 😂 That being said as a finish carpenter I carry these items on me 5 days a week at work without fail. -Cold Steel AD10 drop point s35vn -Leatherman Free P4 -Spyderco Enuff Clip point VG10 in a custom Kydex pocket sheath. -Reylight pineapple ti mini -Tactile Turn bolt action slim -LynchNW ti prybar -Field Notes notebook -Apple AirPods -wallet,keys,belt,hat,boots,etc. I know that might seem like alot, but I honestly use all of it every single day, and the way I carry all of it (Tale Of Knives Holster for AD10/light/pen/prybar, fixie in right front pocket, leatherman in right rear, wallet in rear left, phone in front left, keys on JRW key hook, air pods and notebook in jacket pocket or in my work bag) works really well for me.
Pocket knife, small bright flashight, watch, wallet , phone and keys..Also a bandanna in back pocket. Thats it. The rest of the edc stays in an old backpack in the trunk of car( tools,etc)

gawd in heaven - No. Shit. I've seen guys come into work (2 of them) and they got the maxpedition packs on their belts, the paracord survival bracelets... I think at least one carries a pistol even though they're not allowed on premises. i like my gear like any other guy who needs to be ready for day to day but this video just makes calm, cool sense. a SAK since i was 13, lens wipes, medication and my 3.5" usb-rechargeable LED light. one pants pocket, one shirt pocket and i'm ready for work. got to play hero last year with a friggin electrical storm i haven't seen in yrs. power out. that flashlight got my work area cleared out safely to the lunch room.
I agree with 99% of this list. When I was working with my tools everyday I carried the multi tool, now that I am in the office I just carry a nice pocket knife. I will say, a high end compass that slides on the watch band is nice. I still have one on my luminox. Over all great video, people need to hear this stuff.
I've used my notebook and pen for taking notes during online meetings where I couldn't use my phone or laptop to do so. Also worked as compact sheets of paper to give out numbers or contact info quickly. Mainly I use it cause it looks pretty but it has its uses.
I carry a pocket Moleskine and two pens on my person every day. I'm an urban dweller who works from home. But, is very social. When I was in university, I worked at Ralph Lauren. Selling overpriced suits, shirts and ties. The middle aged Italian men I worked with told, showed, and taught me why and how to always carry two pens. Following their instruction, the practice has yet to fail or bother me. Even in the age of smartphones, the ability to jot something down - for you or a stranger - can prove invaluable. A plus; chicks dig it ;)
I agree with almost everything on this list. The pen and notebook I actually use fairly regularly so I can justify them. 🤣 Partially disagree on multi-tool, too. I downgraded mine down to a Swiss Army Knife for EDC because I use the scissors regularly, and only break out the full size Swisstool Spirit when I know I'll need it.
I started carrying a pen just a few months ago and I'm surprised how convenient it is. I use it all the time...and I've never had any problems [leaks etc]. Still no note pad yet.

Agree, I carry a cut down BIC pen with a hole drilled in the cap. It gets used like once a week at work and regular stuff like signing check at restaurant.

Great video! I love the theory behind it. Start with the idea that you don't need it and shouldn't carry it. If you can prove that statement wrong then carry it. Keeps your EDC slim and functional.
Yeah I came to some of these same conclusions, my keys were getting heavy with too many EDC items. What I do now is I placed those on a separate key chain and have them in the cubby near my steering wheel in my truck. I usually carry a small pocket knife and my cell phone which btw has a flash light app. I can usually open a bottle with one of the keys on my keychain or use the door jam hook on my truck door, both have worked in pinch. Yeah I totally bought the grappling hook, not for EDC but I just wanted to play with it and I did for a few days. There are two things you ought to carry in your car or truck though: 1) jumper cables and 2) fire extinguisher, I have given many people a jump and have needed a jump a few times and I did save someone's brand new VW Beetle from a car fire with the fire extinguisher....sadly those suckers didn't have the notion to give me back a replacement after I saved their car from total destruction...no good deeds go unpunished.
I mostly agree. I use my Saga, Chef life. A Chef Knife is a “Fixed Blade” AND I use a multi tool often in a professional kitchen. I may be the exception to the rule.
Many EDC items are really situational. I carry a multi-tool when I'm at work but not if I'm just puttering around or doing errands. Actual EDC items I have everywhere on me are really only my knife, gun with speed loader, phone, and wallet. Everything else usually stays in my bag or truck or is only worn depending on what I'm doing or where I'm going.
I can see a fixed knife being useful if you use it for your job or live in a rural area. But for most of us a quality folding knife is more than enough.
First time watching, enjoyed the video and mindset! Though I gotta disagree, my fixed blade is a MUST, I’m sure for most city slickers a folder will suffice but for myself that camps out at least once a week, making fire, gutting rabbit, snake, trout, the fixed blade is the better choice. Also, surprisingly, my most used item in my edc (other than my phone, of course), is my notepad and pen. I can fill up a notepad in a month. Writing down ideas for future projects, to do lists, sketches, so on, it helps keep me organized and creative.
Hey James. I gather that he's addressing the majority of folks that watch a few videos, and just buy the latest trend in EDC gear. The actual items that he mentions, are usable for certain individuals on a regular basis, and not the vast majority. But having said that, I totally agree about the survival bracelet 😆
I’m a “city slicker”. My edc is wallet, cell, and my LCR. That’s it. I do have flashlights, pocket knife and other stuff like that in the glove box, but on my body I don’t need fish hooks or fire starters etc. Edit, forgot keys, I tend to do that in RL too!
You’re spot on. Some of the things you mentioned I’ve wanted to add. After thinking about it, I don’t really need it. Beads and a Survival Bracelet for example. I do use my Field Notes and SpacePen daily. Not a day goes by that I don’t use my Leatherman Signal. Not just for the knife either. I even use the can opener at home. Love the content. Keep it up X.

I've recently stumbled on your channel. Excellent stuff and very informative. Multi-tools? Down here in Australia in most places our knife carry laws are nearly as strict as our gun laws. You can't even carry a pocket knife. The answer is a multi-tool but even then you might still get in trouble. Basically you need to be able to convince the police that what you are carrying is for a genuine purpose, typically to do your job. Our knife laws are what they are and we learn to live with them. No one here really feels like they have lost a liberty because of these laws. Perhaps some common sense in policy, but no liberties. Thank you for your channel, your common sense, and your stunning array of coffee equipment.
I was so exited when I bought my Leatherman a couple decades ago. Carried it every day for over a year. One day I realized I rarely used it. It now collects dust on a shelf.
Touché! Subject to some personal and situational circumstances, you hit the nail on the head. Being prepared for the A) Probable or very likely needs, B) Less likely but definitely possible needs, and the C) Unlikely and rare needs, requires very realistic prioritizing, based on real world circumstances, and drawing on the experience of those who have been through a variety of catastrophes, widespread political and social upheaval, serious collapse of law, food supply, technology, transportation etc. Maxpedition pouches jammed with pins and bandaids and heat-sealed plastic straws with Advil tabs, small multitools and a folded 20 dollar bill will not likely save anyone's hide. The history of the human race and successful catastrophe survival has tended toward: A) Clever, adaptable, innovative and highly mobile individuals. B) Organized, disciplined, cooperative groups with a critical mass to repel agression. Sewing kits and chewing gum--well, I doubt it would come into play. All the paraphernalia can be of great secondary value, or you might get lucky and find this or that item useful. Anything's possible. I used to walk into the wilds with fire, powerful air rifle, tarp, jerky, cigars, a Swiss Army Ranger knife, and a hiking staff. Then I culled the excess. Jerky. Cigars. Swiss Army Ranger. "Unless you actually need/use this stuff." The ending is the most accurate part, it's all very subjective to the individual - except for maybe the hooks, compass and brass knuckles lol. I use my pen and notebook almost daily, as well as my little keychain multitool (does it count as 2 list items?). My Leatherman Style PS has solved small to medium inconveniences more times than I can count. I don't like beads and lanyards, but they're a style and preference thing, just like you wearing a hoodie inside your house. Content is content, though. Good channel.

Imma carry what I wanna carry. I use my pen, pry bar, fixed blade, multitool, and flashlight just about every day. You know what I use the least? A folding knife. Yeah, I said it. Hah. . But seriously, some good points in the video. I've just learned over time to accept that different people have different needs, and while I keep eyeing that titanium Olight whistle, I just know that it isn't practical for me.
I would say something like, "Yeah, I actually am that handy, thanks," but the fact that you included an out for people that actually use their multitools means I'm not butthurt over what you said. I also agree with the rest of it, and agree with not carrying a multitool if you don't know what you're doing. In my case, I've spent a lot of time with a lot of multitools and realized that most of them were just too much. I realized that I used the pliers, the screw drivers, and the knife again and again, so I bought a skeletool and didn't look back. And bought the one with somewhat decent blade steel and the multitool replaced my folding knife. The core message of the video is to carry shit you actually use, and be critical of every piece of gear's place on your EDC. Superb advice.
Finally a video that talks real about EDC items!!!! Most of what is promoted people aren’t going to use in reality. A good quality knife and flashlight about the extent for the major of people’s EDC. There are exceptions of course.
As far as knives go, my Victorinox Cadet is really all I need. I use the nail file and small screwdrivers as much as the blade. Carry the folder as needed, not every day.

Absolutely. Owned it all. Stopped using most ten years ago. Dedicated considerations (personal experience aka my 2¢) = Analog watch (northern hemi compass). Zippo w/ Thunderbird 'double' insert (many reasons). Torch (head or flash various situations). Writing utensil (Skilcraft B3 Aviator...I sketched, therefore I was!) SAK Compact (have never needed more). Cel with a card case cover (should hold 3 cards-licence, credit and a $20 bill). Wallet.....who the phuq still carries a wallet?
To each their own, I respect your carry, mine is vast my brother, and I've been carrying this vast carry for many-many-many years, and I continually train with all of my carry.....continually. My theory is, I would much rather have things and never need them, than need them and never have them, it's kind of like that Matthew 25:3 situation. Folks I've grown up with seem to never fail to tap me on the shoulder and say, let me get your such and such for a minute Wes...and while lending it to them I've always said just carry one, and if and when you'll need it (the little tool) you'll have it....tools are just here to make life a bit easier, and part of that is staying on top of said tools and making sure that everything...everything is cleaned and functional and works as it should, even the little things like making sure your batteries are fully charged for the next day...etcetera. It is never (never) about showing stuff off, it's about being as self sufficient as is possible while going through life, that's all. Be well my brother.
Agree on all you said but I do carry some tools, not a multitool. I carry a small pair of pliers, a small crescent wrench and a small reversable screwdriver in my chore coat pockets. Multitools suck because you can only use one tool at a time. You can't hold a bolt head and loosen/tighten a nut with a multitool but a small pliers and a crecent will do the job and a reversible screwdriver with a couple extra bits is real handy around the house/yard (I'm on 12 acres) and even when running errands.

I did deep woods search and rescue…a grappling hook can be helpful…buuuuuut only one was needed per group. They’re good for pulling down loose standing deadwood branches or setting up a bear bag or even setting a larger sapling/tree snare. Also, a fixed blade knife was a necessity as a folder won’t hold up. Granted, we were trained search and rescue personnel who grew up tramping through the woods and hunting. A fixed blade and grappling hook don’t make sense for normal EDC carried by most people especially if they don’t spend much time in the woods. It matters a lot what your situation and environment are. I used to have a paracord bracelet/keychain and yes, they do suck. If made right and with the right hardware it is possible for one to be unraveled in a second or two but almost no one uses the ideal hardware and they do wear out fast. I will include paracord wraps whenever an opportunity makes sense because sometimes a little bit is all you need. My current fixed blade knife has a skeleton handle that’s perfect for twining cord through and I can use more flammable cord for an extra source of tinder. Again, for my situation a deep woods kit makes sense whereas an urban one would be pointless. Knowing how to improvise makes a huge difference too.
Entertaining video :) But i have to disagree on two points: - I have a mini multitool (Nextool Mini Sailor) that actually is being used at least once a week, but i would not carry a full size leatherman all day, because it is just to bulky and heavy. Its just super handy to tighten screws or repairing my kids stuff without having to search for the right tool first. - When it comes to keychain stuff, I don't want to miss my keychain flashlight. It's always there and I don't loose it, since i keep care of not loosing my keys anyway.
My skeletool has a bottle opener. A friend called it the ultimate Tailgate tool. I have to agree, it's handy. Though heavy? Yeah, it is, it gets annoying sometimes being in my bag. You'd be surprised how much those few ounces become cumbersome. The field notes though, I use fairly often, especially when out with my gf. We do dots and other drawing things.
Agree with everything here except the multitool, and that's because multitool takes in a wide range. A pliers style tool like a Leatherman? Yeah, unless you're in a trade that uses it, it's a waste. But I carry a Victorinox Manager (55mm), and use it frequently. Even the pen! :-) Lightweight bar style multitools (SAKs and clones) have their place in EDC. The chonky pliers, only for a select few.
I have been starting to think about EDC and I personally dont even have regular uses for a pocket knife. But I always have a pen with me, and sometimes I do put my journal in my bag. I use it every day. As someone with anxiety, if I know I'm going out somewhere and I might have a little bit of downtime, its just a peace of mind thing to know my journal is there if I need to start writing. Its a coping mechanism for me. Even then, I will admit I have never used it in public yet.
I'm a lady and I love my keychain with all my EDC stuff on it but I just realized after watching this video that I never really use it and it takes up a lot of space in my purse. This was a good video thanks
My SIL is a bartender and carries dedicated bottle openers, so I can see why some people might do that, but yeah most people probably shouldn't bother. You don't "need" a fixed blade knife but I've used one as a pocket knife a few times, if you get the right one it's not more/less convenient than a folder. I don't put lanyards/beads on everything, but sometimes I attach one for stuff that's at the bottom of my pocket. Disagree about the notebooks/pens, use them all the time, don't use an expensive pen either. I tend to put multitools in drawers/bags, but sometimes I carry it. Like if I'm going to my mom's house, I know I'm going to need it, haha. Honestly small SAKs are about all the multitool I need most days. I commonly use scissors/flathead screwdriver. A small pry tool would cover me most of the time but sometimes I need a legit screwdriver. Disagree with that last one too, OC spray is effective. I probably don't benefit as much from the impact tool, but there's times using spray is a bad idea. I hold onto it to walk across parking lots at night, at least that way something is already in my hand even if it's not the greatest thing.
As a bartender I carry a dedicated bottle open LOL! I do leave the write in the rain notebook and fisher space pen at home now though. I like the small keychain flashlights. they get a lot of use. I used to carry a fixed blade too but now that I got my concealed the Glock took its place.
Facts man I try to keep it minimal but I do like my small! Fixed blade I rotate with my folder depending how I feel but I don’t carry both. Less is better I like being light as possible….
I agree with you. Get rid of the stuff if you don't use it regularly. Me personally I carry pen and papaer and use it almost daily, because I don't like to take notes on my phone. And I carry a multitool because I youse it from time to time
Getting REAL with the EDC (EVERY DAY Carry). If you don't need it, don't carry it. If you don't use it almost every day, don't carry it. Excellent advice. The only thing I would recommend is for the paracord bracelet enthusiast. I make my own bracelets, and they are "quick release". I pull the ends, and the entire thing unravels, but I agree about not wearing it every day. Great videos and I'm glad I found your channel! Semper Fi!
Good commonsense advise, especially the multi tool, that is like the holy grail of hard core EDC people, I have never had a need to keep one in my pocket...
I’d agree with almost everything you listed. I would add a pry bar to that list also, I never understood why people carry them. That said if you have a construction job or a “handyman” job then i can see the justification in carrying multi tools and pry bars.
Lol all of this is so true! I have several mini pads and fisher space pens that sit in my bags collecting dust. So much easier to take notes on my iPhone with an alarm notification as a reminder

I use little lanyards on my deep carry to help pulling it out of my pocket…however, I fell into the keychain tool trap and quickly realized it was a waste of money. I use my knife everyday but other than that, the other crap is wasteful. I have my outdoor kit which is different…but LESS IS MORE!! Good video!!
Good advice about the paracord gadgets. If cordage isn't immediately useable, it might as well be a hundred miles away. Having to unravel something to get a piece of rope is silly. So, what do you do for a pants belt or a rifle sling after you unravel it to get useable cordage ? I carry a length of cord tightly wrapped with masking tape in my pocket every day. Pockets are made for carrying your goods. If something isn't paying it's way to travel, toss it out.

I get what you are saying every time I turn around there is something new "everyone" is supposedly carrying. The latest ive noticed is slingshots. 🤔 But ill not be giving up my fixed blade anytime soon. First off I've carried one most of my life. But as a Canadian our laws around folding knives are messed up. So much so even law enforcement doesn't know which end is up. So fixed blade is legally so much easier to carry. There are a few other things but like you said, carry what "you" use not what is trendy and you don't have to spend top dollar to do so either.
Well at my day job I use the pen all day and the notebook and the night gig I bartend so other than that I can ditch the rest youre totally right brother thank you.

I went down that rabbit hole a few years back. Now I carry a small flipper that fits in my 5th pocket, a tiny rechargeable flashlight on my keychain with 2 keys, phone, wallet, pew and a nice watch. I have a small edc bag with tools and everything else I want to carry in my car as no matter where I am its typically not far away. the other day stopped by a buddies whose always going on about EDC and he was standing out in the cold with a dead battery and a low tire asking me for a jump so he could go get air in his tire. I showed him my Lithium Jump Starter Box, Car Battery Booster Pack and roadside air compressor and told him he could of had both for less then he paid for a pen he never uses when his phone can take notes.
So I’m a tradesman by profession and all my hobbies and whatnot relate. What you said about multi-tools, so freaking spot on. I’ve carried and more importantly used a multi tool on nearly a daily basis for near 15 years now. The overwhelming majority of prepped/edc/tactical type dudes I see reviewing or using these things on TH-cam or real life very clearly have office jobs and don’t actually use tools for a living. No judgement man. That’s fine if it’s your jam and makes you happy, but why lug around a 7-10 ounce brick if you can’t/don’t use it? A Victorinox Tinker or some such would serve you well for a lot less scratch, space and weight and I can do a lot more with a little Victorinox Cadet or a Tinker than the average edc guy can probably do with a bag of actual tools. This dude here is dispensing some solid wisdom. I’m not some bushcraft/survival knife expert guy, so I don’t carry 36 knives and a saw everywhere I go because I simply don’t have a use base to justify wasting my time with those tools whereas they may make a lot of sense for a dude who works for the forest service or works on a ranch or just likes to be out in the woods a lot.
SPOT ON! Though I won’t like, the leather man on my harness does come in handy sometimes when I drop shit out the mewp 😂 and the amount of packaging we have to cut though the knife on it’s pretty handy. Rather have it than not.
There is definitely a relation between the guys that feel the need to have a very elaborate edc while also having an office job and then you meet guys that have extremely demanding tool needs and they carry nothing on there person and keep everything in their work truck. It’s funny how there is this counter intuitive reality.
Good points. I like victorinox forester. Corkscrew. Bottle opener. Main knife. Second knife I can do without. Saw is good for cutting rope. Which I do far more often than I expected I ever would! But it’s a decent size. And good for improvisational use. I carry a backpack full of tools. I don’t need the same gear in my pockets. I have a knife in my pocket because I’m a knife nerd. I have a flashlight in my pocket because I spend more time under desks than sitting at them. I had a ranger without a saw. Liked it but found the saw too useful.

Totally agree with you on everything except the fixed blade and multi tool. I carry a small edc fixed blade on me everyday. As I simply prefer a fixed blade over a folder. And as an long time hunter a multi tool is a must for me it has saved me many times. Other then that keep up the great work and keep the awesome videos coming. I love watching your videos.
Nice comment dude, in my line of work and being on a farm I would say I use my leatherman wave+ weekly and pocket knives work but also there’s something bad-booty about carrying a decent sized to big fixed blade😃, sturdy-ness and simply reliable👍🏻😁
Exactly once I figured out how to carry my small fixed blade comfortably, I haven’t touched my folders for like a year now.
I was also going to make a comment about the fixed blades. I keep a mora knife in my EDC bag for any tasks that require a little more sturdiness than a folder can offer. I don't have to worry about a fixed blade having lock failure and folding back on my fingers and that gives me peace of mind. 95% of the time I can get away with my pocket folder but if I have to cut a hole in a bucket or cut some zip ties (or rapid deployment for self defense) the fixed blade is the go to.
Same. Leatherman Signal and switch between the Amtac Northman or Dynamis double edged fixed blade. The blade to filet, the tool to suture and explain why it had to happen. 🇺🇸
Exactly, no idea why he would say a folding knife is safer, fixed blades are absolutely safer being less likely to fail on you for whatever reason, you dont need some massive rambo knife with ya all the time but i frequently use my bradford 3.5 drop point
I use a multitool, pen and paper every day..but I'm a weirdo lol. But I also stopped carrying a folding knife (unless I'm reviewing it) because I found I almost never use them over my multitool. The only thing I don't use a multitool blade for often is food related tasks.
A Leatherman multitool is a must have, period!

I’m a middle aged guy and started “every day carrying” before there was a name for it. I started carrying Surefire in 1989, Spyderco in 1990, Sig in 1997 and Leatherman in 1987. Through the years I “evolved” with the industry and fell into many of the trends etc. buying and carrying many of the things mentioned in the video. But after 36 years of edc’ing and thousands in trends, I’m back to the few things I started with because I daily carry and use them. Added a MontBlanc pen received as a gift for my job, a minimalist wallet and grandads’ silver money clip and I’ve found it’s all I need. Good video. Subscribed.

I work for a company that maintains some janitorial accounts so I think that gives the extra jingle jangle on my key ring a pass. Maybe.
Current keyring extras are a 2" folding carabiner knife (used semi-regularly), small nail clippers (used regularly...hangnails!) + pepper spray (sometimes I can't sleep and work or wander around in the dead of night).
I have to carry pen and paper because otherwise I will write up the palm of my hand and, at times, the top of my hand. Too many thoughts, to-do's, and ideas. Looks horrid, too. Especially when I use permanent marker. 😂

Great practical advice ! have to agree, i dont carry half that stuff and the stuff I do carry has purpose. Use it everyday! Carry what you use! not what you think you might use and practice with what you have. Sometimes I just carry a edc wallet pouch and a Victorinox for the day. EDC changes from day to day. Most used items for myself are a multitool (scissors mostly and saw for work-philips & Slotted), Pen light combo, Battery bank. Sometimes I just cut out a battery bank since more of my gear lasts a day or a duration until i get to a usb recharge port either at a computer at work or in my car. When out working in the woods my edc changes and some cases drastically.

Something that few people should have in a EDC those box cutter knives. You will use it a lot and if it dulled just switch the blade. I find that I use it more for cutting things than I use my other knives.

I use my multitools every day, and I am glad to have them with me. I am also one to carry many knives, including fixed blades. For the average person that edc's I understand what you are saying, but not everyone wants to be a minimalist.
Pen: I use a pen almost every day at work, and I've found it helpful outside of work. I prefer to use 3x5 cards rather than a notebook.
Multitool: I don't go anywhere without my swiss army knife.
My basic EDC: swiss army knife, flashlight, pen, wallet, phone, microfiber lens cloth. Easy-peasy.

I know that might seem like alot, but I honestly use all of it every single day, and the way I carry all of it (Tale Of Knives Holster for AD10/light/pen/prybar, fixie in right front pocket, leatherman in right rear, wallet in rear left, phone in front left, keys on JRW key hook, air pods and notebook in jacket pocket or in my work bag) works really well for me.
Pocket knife, small bright flashight, watch, wallet , phone and keys..Also a bandanna in back pocket. Thats it. The rest of the edc stays in an old backpack in the trunk of car( tools,etc)

i like my gear like any other guy who needs to be ready for day to day but this video just makes calm, cool sense. a SAK since i was 13, lens wipes, medication and my 3.5" usb-rechargeable LED light. one pants pocket, one shirt pocket and i'm ready for work.
got to play hero last year with a friggin electrical storm i haven't seen in yrs. power out. that flashlight got my work area cleared out safely to the lunch room.
I agree with 99% of this list. When I was working with my tools everyday I carried the multi tool, now that I am in the office I just carry a nice pocket knife. I will say, a high end compass that slides on the watch band is nice. I still have one on my luminox. Over all great video, people need to hear this stuff.
I've used my notebook and pen for taking notes during online meetings where I couldn't use my phone or laptop to do so. Also worked as compact sheets of paper to give out numbers or contact info quickly. Mainly I use it cause it looks pretty but it has its uses.
I carry a pocket Moleskine and two pens on my person every day. I'm an urban dweller who works from home. But, is very social.
When I was in university, I worked at Ralph Lauren. Selling overpriced suits, shirts and ties. The middle aged Italian men I worked with told, showed, and taught me why and how to always carry two pens. Following their instruction, the practice has yet to fail or bother me. Even in the age of smartphones, the ability to jot something down - for you or a stranger - can prove invaluable. A plus; chicks dig it ;)

Partially disagree on multi-tool, too. I downgraded mine down to a Swiss Army Knife for EDC because I use the scissors regularly, and only break out the full size Swisstool Spirit when I know I'll need it.
I started carrying a pen just a few months ago and I'm surprised how convenient it is. I use it all the time...and I've never had any problems [leaks etc]. Still no note pad yet.

Agree, I carry a cut down BIC pen with a hole drilled in the cap. It gets used like once a week at work and regular stuff like signing check at restaurant.

Great video! I love the theory behind it. Start with the idea that you don't need it and shouldn't carry it. If you can prove that statement wrong then carry it. Keeps your EDC slim and functional.
Yeah I came to some of these same conclusions, my keys were getting heavy with too many EDC items. What I do now is I placed those on a separate key chain and have them in the cubby near my steering wheel in my truck. I usually carry a small pocket knife and my cell phone which btw has a flash light app. I can usually open a bottle with one of the keys on my keychain or use the door jam hook on my truck door, both have worked in pinch. Yeah I totally bought the grappling hook, not for EDC but I just wanted to play with it and I did for a few days. There are two things you ought to carry in your car or truck though: 1) jumper cables and 2) fire extinguisher, I have given many people a jump and have needed a jump a few times and I did save someone's brand new VW Beetle from a car fire with the fire extinguisher....sadly those suckers didn't have the notion to give me back a replacement after I saved their car from total destruction...no good deeds go unpunished.
I mostly agree. I use my Saga, Chef life. A Chef Knife is a “Fixed Blade” AND I use a multi tool often in a professional kitchen. I may be the exception to the rule.

Many EDC items are really situational. I carry a multi-tool when I'm at work but not if I'm just puttering around or doing errands. Actual EDC items I have everywhere on me are really only my knife, gun with speed loader, phone, and wallet. Everything else usually stays in my bag or truck or is only worn depending on what I'm doing or where I'm going.
I can see a fixed knife being useful if you use it for your job or live in a rural area. But for most of us a quality folding knife is more than enough.

First time watching, enjoyed the video and mindset! Though I gotta disagree, my fixed blade is a MUST, I’m sure for most city slickers a folder will suffice but for myself that camps out at least once a week, making fire, gutting rabbit, snake, trout, the fixed blade is the better choice. Also, surprisingly, my most used item in my edc (other than my phone, of course), is my notepad and pen. I can fill up a notepad in a month. Writing down ideas for future projects, to do lists, sketches, so on, it helps keep me organized and creative.
Hey James. I gather that he's addressing the majority of folks that watch a few videos, and just buy the latest trend in EDC gear. The actual items that he mentions, are usable for certain individuals on a regular basis, and not the vast majority. But having said that, I totally agree about the survival bracelet 😆
I’m a “city slicker”. My edc is wallet, cell, and my LCR. That’s it. I do have flashlights, pocket knife and other stuff like that in the glove box, but on my body I don’t need fish hooks or fire starters etc.
Edit, forgot keys, I tend to do that in RL too!

I do use my Field Notes and SpacePen daily. Not a day goes by that I don’t use my Leatherman Signal. Not just for the knife either. I even use the can opener at home.

I've recently stumbled on your channel. Excellent stuff and very informative. Multi-tools? Down here in Australia in most places our knife carry laws are nearly as strict as our gun laws. You can't even carry a pocket knife. The answer is a multi-tool but even then you might still get in trouble. Basically you need to be able to convince the police that what you are carrying is for a genuine purpose, typically to do your job. Our knife laws are what they are and we learn to live with them. No one here really feels like they have lost a liberty because of these laws. Perhaps some common sense in policy, but no liberties. Thank you for your channel, your common sense, and your stunning array of coffee equipment.
I was so exited when I bought my Leatherman a couple decades ago. Carried it every day for over a year. One day I realized I rarely used it. It now collects dust on a shelf.

C) Unlikely and rare needs, requires very realistic prioritizing, based on real world circumstances, and drawing on the experience of those who have been through a variety of catastrophes, widespread political and social upheaval, serious collapse of law, food supply, technology, transportation etc.
Maxpedition pouches jammed with pins and bandaids and heat-sealed plastic straws with Advil tabs, small multitools and a folded 20 dollar bill will not likely save anyone's hide.
The history of the human race and successful catastrophe survival has tended toward:
A) Clever, adaptable, innovative and highly mobile individuals.
B) Organized, disciplined, cooperative groups with a critical mass to repel agression.
Sewing kits and chewing gum--well, I doubt it would come into play.
All the paraphernalia can be of great secondary value, or you might get lucky and find this or that item useful. Anything's possible.
I used to walk into the wilds with fire, powerful air rifle, tarp, jerky, cigars, a Swiss Army Ranger knife, and a hiking staff. Then I culled the excess.

"Unless you actually need/use this stuff." The ending is the most accurate part, it's all very subjective to the individual - except for maybe the hooks, compass and brass knuckles lol. I use my pen and notebook almost daily, as well as my little keychain multitool (does it count as 2 list items?). My Leatherman Style PS has solved small to medium inconveniences more times than I can count. I don't like beads and lanyards, but they're a style and preference thing, just like you wearing a hoodie inside your house. Content is content, though. Good channel.

But seriously, some good points in the video. I've just learned over time to accept that different people have different needs, and while I keep eyeing that titanium Olight whistle, I just know that it isn't practical for me.

I would say something like, "Yeah, I actually am that handy, thanks," but the fact that you included an out for people that actually use their multitools means I'm not butthurt over what you said. I also agree with the rest of it, and agree with not carrying a multitool if you don't know what you're doing.
In my case, I've spent a lot of time with a lot of multitools and realized that most of them were just too much. I realized that I used the pliers, the screw drivers, and the knife again and again, so I bought a skeletool and didn't look back. And bought the one with somewhat decent blade steel and the multitool replaced my folding knife.
The core message of the video is to carry shit you actually use, and be critical of every piece of gear's place on your EDC. Superb advice.
Finally a video that talks real about EDC items!!!! Most of what is promoted people aren’t going to use in reality. A good quality knife and flashlight about the extent for the major of people’s EDC. There are exceptions of course.

As far as knives go, my Victorinox Cadet is really all I need. I use the nail file and small screwdrivers as much as the blade. Carry the folder as needed, not every day.

Absolutely. Owned it all. Stopped using most ten years ago. Dedicated considerations (personal experience aka my 2¢) = Analog watch (northern hemi compass). Zippo w/ Thunderbird 'double' insert (many reasons). Torch (head or flash various situations). Writing utensil (Skilcraft B3 Aviator...I sketched, therefore I was!) SAK Compact (have never needed more). Cel with a card case cover (should hold 3 cards-licence, credit and a $20 bill). Wallet.....who the phuq still carries a wallet?
To each their own, I respect your carry, mine is vast my brother, and I've been carrying this vast carry for many-many-many years, and I continually train with all of my carry.....continually. My theory is, I would much rather have things and never need them, than need them and never have them, it's kind of like that Matthew 25:3 situation. Folks I've grown up with seem to never fail to tap me on the shoulder and say, let me get your such and such for a minute Wes...and while lending it to them I've always said just carry one, and if and when you'll need it (the little tool) you'll have it....tools are just here to make life a bit easier, and part of that is staying on top of said tools and making sure that everything...everything is cleaned and functional and works as it should, even the little things like making sure your batteries are fully charged for the next day...etcetera. It is never (never) about showing stuff off, it's about being as self sufficient as is possible while going through life, that's all. Be well my brother.

Agree on all you said but I do carry some tools, not a multitool. I carry a small pair of pliers, a small crescent wrench and a small reversable screwdriver in my chore coat pockets. Multitools suck because you can only use one tool at a time. You can't hold a bolt head and loosen/tighten a nut with a multitool but a small pliers and a crecent will do the job and a reversible screwdriver with a couple extra bits is real handy around the house/yard (I'm on 12 acres) and even when running errands.
Agree with all but the pen since I'm a retired LEO that still hits stuff down regularly so I don't forget, lol. Keep them coming Brother

I did deep woods search and rescue…a grappling hook can be helpful…buuuuuut only one was needed per group. They’re good for pulling down loose standing deadwood branches or setting up a bear bag or even setting a larger sapling/tree snare. Also, a fixed blade knife was a necessity as a folder won’t hold up.
Granted, we were trained search and rescue personnel who grew up tramping through the woods and hunting. A fixed blade and grappling hook don’t make sense for normal EDC carried by most people especially if they don’t spend much time in the woods. It matters a lot what your situation and environment are.
I used to have a paracord bracelet/keychain and yes, they do suck. If made right and with the right hardware it is possible for one to be unraveled in a second or two but almost no one uses the ideal hardware and they do wear out fast. I will include paracord wraps whenever an opportunity makes sense because sometimes a little bit is all you need. My current fixed blade knife has a skeleton handle that’s perfect for twining cord through and I can use more flammable cord for an extra source of tinder. Again, for my situation a deep woods kit makes sense whereas an urban one would be pointless.
Knowing how to improvise makes a huge difference too.
Entertaining video :) But i have to disagree on two points:
- I have a mini multitool (Nextool Mini Sailor) that actually is being used at least once a week, but i would not carry a full size leatherman all day, because it is just to bulky and heavy. Its just super handy to tighten screws or repairing my kids stuff without having to search for the right tool first.
- When it comes to keychain stuff, I don't want to miss my keychain flashlight. It's always there and I don't loose it, since i keep care of not loosing my keys anyway.
My skeletool has a bottle opener. A friend called it the ultimate Tailgate tool. I have to agree, it's handy.
Though heavy? Yeah, it is, it gets annoying sometimes being in my bag. You'd be surprised how much those few ounces become cumbersome.
The field notes though, I use fairly often, especially when out with my gf. We do dots and other drawing things.

Agree with everything here except the multitool, and that's because multitool takes in a wide range. A pliers style tool like a Leatherman? Yeah, unless you're in a trade that uses it, it's a waste.
But I carry a Victorinox Manager (55mm), and use it frequently. Even the pen! :-) Lightweight bar style multitools (SAKs and clones) have their place in EDC. The chonky pliers, only for a select few.
I have been starting to think about EDC and I personally dont even have regular uses for a pocket knife. But I always have a pen with me, and sometimes I do put my journal in my bag. I use it every day. As someone with anxiety, if I know I'm going out somewhere and I might have a little bit of downtime, its just a peace of mind thing to know my journal is there if I need to start writing. Its a coping mechanism for me. Even then, I will admit I have never used it in public yet.

I'm a lady and I love my keychain with all my EDC stuff on it but I just realized after watching this video that I never really use it and it takes up a lot of space in my purse. This was a good video thanks
My SIL is a bartender and carries dedicated bottle openers, so I can see why some people might do that, but yeah most people probably shouldn't bother.
You don't "need" a fixed blade knife but I've used one as a pocket knife a few times, if you get the right one it's not more/less convenient than a folder.
I don't put lanyards/beads on everything, but sometimes I attach one for stuff that's at the bottom of my pocket.
Disagree about the notebooks/pens, use them all the time, don't use an expensive pen either.
I tend to put multitools in drawers/bags, but sometimes I carry it. Like if I'm going to my mom's house, I know I'm going to need it, haha. Honestly small SAKs are about all the multitool I need most days. I commonly use scissors/flathead screwdriver. A small pry tool would cover me most of the time but sometimes I need a legit screwdriver.
Disagree with that last one too, OC spray is effective. I probably don't benefit as much from the impact tool, but there's times using spray is a bad idea. I hold onto it to walk across parking lots at night, at least that way something is already in my hand even if it's not the greatest thing.
Fixed blades are superior to folders in every way. Especially edc.
As a bartender I carry a dedicated bottle open LOL! I do leave the write in the rain notebook and fisher space pen at home now though. I like the small keychain flashlights. they get a lot of use. I used to carry a fixed blade too but now that I got my concealed the Glock took its place.
Facts man I try to keep it minimal but I do like my small! Fixed blade I rotate with my folder depending how I feel but I don’t carry both. Less is better I like being light as possible….
I agree with you. Get rid of the stuff if you don't use it regularly. Me personally I carry pen and papaer and use it almost daily, because I don't like to take notes on my phone. And I carry a multitool because I youse it from time to time
Getting REAL with the EDC (EVERY DAY Carry). If you don't need it, don't carry it. If you don't use it almost every day, don't carry it. Excellent advice. The only thing I would recommend is for the paracord bracelet enthusiast. I make my own bracelets, and they are "quick release". I pull the ends, and the entire thing unravels, but I agree about not wearing it every day. Great videos and I'm glad I found your channel!

I’d agree with almost everything you listed. I would add a pry bar to that list also, I never understood why people carry them. That said if you have a construction job or a “handyman” job then i can see the justification in carrying multi tools and pry bars.

I got my bottle opener while on deployment from Barbados in 1989, I'm keepin it. Other than that I don't carry the stuff you mentioned anyways.

This might be the greatest edc video of all time! I know the guys that post all of these things in their pockets and bags and the only thing they use them for is to open the Amazon box of the new stuff they just ordered that they will never use.
SAK is sufficient enough. I use the scissors and the small blade plenty of times to open stuff.
You speak the true both the sellers and the mall ninjas don't wanna hear, for the sales and the feeling like Batman. All that extra stuff just weighs you down and isn't accessible quickly in an emergency anyway. Emergency kit in your house or your car, sure. Backpack if you're looking to do some wild-ass camping, maybe. Other than that, you're not gonna have the time or the mindset or the dexterity for anything else. Have a good pocket knife, have a well-charged cellphone, you aren't gonna be killing zombies on your way from your job to the Seven-Eleven. Well-said, man, you got a subscription off this.
I get what you are saying every time I turn around there is something new "everyone" is supposedly carrying. The latest ive noticed is slingshots. 🤔
But ill not be giving up my fixed blade anytime soon. First off I've carried one most of my life. But as a Canadian our laws around folding knives are messed up. So much so even law enforcement doesn't know which end is up. So fixed blade is legally so much easier to carry.
There are a few other things but like you said, carry what "you" use not what is trendy and you don't have to spend top dollar to do so either.
Well at my day job I use the pen all day and the notebook and the night gig I bartend so other than that I can ditch the rest youre totally right brother thank you.
