this has me feeling like a detective in the 1950s
It looked like rain, so I got up to close the window. That guy on the sidewalk was still playing his sax.
He was good, but I had heard enough for one day.
When I turned back to my desk, she was already standing in front of it.
"Can I help you?", I said.
"No, Mr. Starker, I'm here to help you.", she whispered. "You placed a Want Ad for a secretary in today's paper. I'd like to apply for the position."
"Cookie, you can have any position you want." I replied, "You're hired as of now. And from now on, call me Mick."
"Oh, thank you Mr, uh, Mick." she squealed, "You don't know how happy this makes me."
"Sit down, sugar, pour yourself a drink. We've got all night to get to know each other. And you don't know how happy this'll make me!", I said as I removed my tie.
That's when the phone rang. That's when it all started to go sideways.
Who could've figured that she'd wind up dead, and I'd be sitting in a jail cell talking to you?
It was like any other night, heavy rain, empty streets, cold yet mild brreze. It's 10pm and was about to close shop, haven't seen a single soul come through the door for 3 days straight. I stand up walk over to the window and stare at the neon light across the street, no-tell motel. As I'm lighting my last cigarette, I hear the door open and close behind me.....
This is great! I have the screen enlarged so while I'm typing out a letter to a friend on my manual portable typewriter, I feel as if I'm looking out the window while I type. This is so cool!
Serious question:🤔 *What makes it portable?* 🤔 It's already cordless. You aren't going to sit it on your lap and type, you're at a desk.
Not a hater; I've been thinking of buying one but I have two electronic ones already.
@@Pantology_Enthusiast What makes it portable is that it comes with it's own case so you just put it in the case and take it anywhere. Even at the park. Been typing since the age of 16. Took typing classes in High School. That was back in 1966. My Mom bought me my first portable Royal Caravan Typewriter. I still have it to this day and it looks and types like the day I got it. I'm turning 73 this August. Today, people go through many computers in their life time. With a vintage typewriter, they typewriter goes through many people! I love it. Best part? It will NEVER CRASH! I own around 12 typewriters. 10 of which are portables. I'm partial to the Smith-Corona 5 & 6 series. All made in America!

Indeed, the classics are lovely workhorses.
Sadly, the plastic printwheels on later typewriters didn't survive the ravages of time quite as well and I've had to replace 2 of them.
Indeed, many people treat technology as disposable but I still use a few desktops from 2004. actually got them from a scrap pile in 2011. Bit of board repair and capacitor replacement has served me well.
I was a bit slow to take an interest in typewriters, honestly. I found a cheap one at GoodWill an used it as an oversized label-maker as computer printers are rather annoying to setup for labels.
My interests in typewriters really started in 2018 after watching a talk from Thomas S Mullaney, the author of _The Chinese Typewriter._ While it was about the difficulties associated with the the 1,000s of characters in the Han derived scripts, it also started me on the path to studying older methods of working with language and writing.
I wish I could find an affordable Smith-Corona but it seems they are outside my bugdet.

Another day in this newfound decade. After my shower and breakfast, I get on one of those brand new Hyperloop cars, and I’m off to my DREAM Corporate Headquarters, located within the heart of Atlanta, GA. Another usual day on the job that went well, and I’m on that same Hyperloop again for the hour-long journey back home. Now, what happens after dinner and early evening television is where it gets interesting. I head out to my favorite hotel for this decade, The Hollywood Tower Hotel, but it’s only for the atmosphere and a bite to eat. Over on the other side of the wall where my booth was at, I could hear the cacophony of jazz instruments and blues my way, as the Speakeasies’ Band played their fingers down to the bone, all of that to impress an eager crowd of people. After my little late-night snack, I roam the streets of Miami, FL (yep, that’s where this hotel was located), hoping to get so much as a glance of the amazing art deco artwork on the beachside city’s many high-rises, or even - maybe - a lone celebrity who looked like she just decided to go out into public on a whim. But alas, the night begins to wane into midnight, and I must go home. Tomorrow will only be yet another fine day in this decade that we will sooner or later take for granted in future decades to come. I can already smell the good times rolling - or at least, a pumpkin spice cinnamon roll.
