  • The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt isn't a top of the line electric car, but what it does do well is deliver a quality electric vehicle at a relatively affordable price. We need more of these EV's on the market, and Chevrolet seems to get it! Want to compare this vehicle to others EV's? I own a 2023 Bolt EV and it's the best car I've ever owned. I'm 71 and have had many new cars, but this one is exceptional. In the US I drive it 200 miles (322 kilometers) for $5.20 in electricity. That is its single greatest quality and it has many.

    Guess what... GM just discontinued the Bolt.

  • @Longsnowsm
    @Longsnowsm ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Meets what the market demands... Agreed. GM's response: "We are ending the Bolt because it isn't what the market demands, they don't want cars" Tesla's response: "Here hold my beer"
    GM cancels the Bolt. I don't know how this company stays in business. Bolt is a good car, and they own this small affordable EV space. So what do they do? Cancel it for another vehicle in an already crowded EV SUV/Crossover space. Brilliant thinking GM, brilliant!
    The Bolt will be missed. The market for EV's is going the wrong direction, larger, less efficient, more bloated, and out of touch with reality.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think you're wrong. The market would love reasonably sized affordable EVs, but the push is for larger more expensive more profitable ones. There is a lot going on behind the scenes, but it's going to be a time of rapid change over the next decade, and not all of that change will be in the customer's best interest.

    • @Longsnowsm
      @Longsnowsm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterLoweOne Tesla is already rewriting the rules the legacy manufacturers play by, and will be rolling that affordable EV out in 2025 and own the space unless BYD and others manage to get into the market. Again the OEM's will be standing there flat footed and unable to figure out how to make these things profitably. The Bolt was introduced in 2017 and GM had time to learn, refine, streamline, and make that car profitable. Yet we hear GM is still loosing money with each one they sell. I guess it is OK. The competition will show them how to do it. In the mean time anyone interested in a high quality affordable EV should snag up a Bolt.

    I drove the eV and EUV back to back, very similar. They did not feel cheap and I doubt you can beat the experience for the price for any new vehicle.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah. The price of this vehicle is key, especially in the U.S. with their current tax rebate. It's not a perfect car, but I think it will be perfect for a lot of people. The other thing that I find is that EVs are coming absolutely loaded with technology that the average person won't understand or use. A simple, cost effective EV is what's needed in the market, and these are getting close to being that.

      @@PeterLoweOne I agree with a lot of your points, but the market is catering to youth and they care most about tech. The tech in the bolt was way easier to use than the 2017 CRV we traded in. The bolt was just cancelled by GM and I bet their next eVs will have even more tech and bigger prices. That will leave a hole in the market.

    The Bolt replaced 14.7 mpg with 3.9 mile/kWh: a kWh is just $0.082 and a gallon of gas is about $3.20 - so it's 10x less expensive per mile.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had an electric vehicle and a pick up truck, and I used to say that it was ten times cheaper to run the EV. It may not have been an exact calculation, but it was an educated estimate. The larger point was if a 70 dollar tank of gas cost around 7 dollars, the reality for most people is that you just stop thinking about the fuel cost. We took the EV everywhere when we had the pickup truck as our second vehicle, and it was truly night and day in the difference of operating costs.

    So many new vehicles coming out all the time, and makes it difficult to choose….
    Chinese cars are appearing here (like BYD) which are very big back there.
    Also noting the differences in battery technologies. Lithium ion is now becoming ‘old hat’, with Lithium iron phosphate starting to appear as a better technology, but then future talk about solid state batteries……

    What are your thoughts on GM discontinuing the Bolt EV and EUV after the 2023 model year?

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand that they're going to focus on larger vehicles. Personally, I wish they'd focus on affordable smaller EV's but nobody but Tesla is making any real money on EV's right now, so if GM believes that they can make more money on larger EV's, I can see why they would go that direction. The other thing is that EV's are RAPIDLY evolving, and the Bolt uses technology that GM has already decided that they won't be using moving forward, so I think you'll see manufacturers continue to cut models quickly if they can move to something that they see as being better for a revised strategy.

    • @williamlaine2116
      @williamlaine2116 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just hope that my order, made a week before the announcement, gets fulfilled! GM is getting out of the affordable EV mass market. The car dealers' lots are filled with big, gas-guzzling 4-door pickups & big SUVs, where the big profits are. I don't believe that the 2024 EV Equinox will sell for $30,000.

    GM getting rid of the Bolt line is typical for that company. They kill every good thing they have over there. Every Bolt that they make they can sell. You build a market and then just seed that market to the competition.

    • @PeterLoweOne
      @PeterLoweOne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is an interesting decision to kill it without a replacement. Rumour is that they're losing too much money on it and need to make larger, more profitable units right now until they can produce EV's less expensively. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

    Great value? In the States, LT trim is $27,500. Minus the $7500 in welfare, of course. Suspicious numbers. Add tax/tag, delivery and dealer prep (which GM actually pays a second time for) and you're nearly back to $28,000. That's @ $600/month for 5 years, $35,000ish including interest. That's a whole lot for a 2nd car.
    Besides the cost, short range and frequent charging for extensive periods, both depending on iffy facilities and weather conditions. A lot of $ for a lot of inconveniences.
    My Sonic LS is bigger than the EUV, holds 7 with 2 adults in the trunk. Range is 460 miles, 740km, and "charging" takes 5 minutes. Maintenance is only $60 every 5k. The value is in the sum of true cost and convenience.
    Typical GM. They finally got it right and competitive, in price at least, but BOLT is cancelled for 2024. Cutting their losses on EV2.
