Preparing for a firefighter written exam or civil service exam can be stressful. In this video we'll go over some basic test taking strategies to keep in mind before you sit down to take your test.

Written exams can vary widely depending on the organization that is sponsoring the test. Usually, whatever city/municipality is hiring will advertise a test on a given date and will be taken by several other people. Ultimately, your score on this test will determine where you will rank on the hiring list. This is the first step to getting hired as a career firefighter.

Took my test back in May got a 91.72% with 150 questions, passed the CPAT in July and just did my oral interview the 16th and got a 90% on it! I’m testing for Rockford, IL Fire department thanks for the vids
Final update: I just received a verbal offer for the Rockford Fire Department. The 18 week academy starts July 31st

@@fernyfloresdrummer3568 I’d say give yourself a month with no distractions and 30-40 min a day a dedicated to studying or brushing up on any subjects you feel you need to. Idk what your test will consist of but I’m sure it will be similar to some TH-cam videos posted that you can watch like this one.

It is basically standard math and reading but also, reading directions and using a map to choose the best route, gear rotations, pulley physics, load weight and balance etc
Its still a difficult test you have to remember and think

I just wanted to update here, I passed both my written and physical test today. There was 16 of us there, not all of us are going to be hired onto the department, but we will know here soon.

I spent time months in advance watching your videos and taking notes. I advise anyone to do the same as well. They will be able to tell who really worked for their spot on the team. Never give up if you fail, get right back up and try again, you got this!

Hi just wanted to say I used these tutorials to study for my volunteer firefighter exams here in Ontario, CAN. and I passed!
Our exam had a lot more word problems and reading comprehension than math questions and barely any mechanical reasoning.

Are there any videos on spatial and directional awareness? I can't find much on this subject and it seems to be the subject I struggle with the most.
My department I am applying for gives you a book of maps and then gives you an hour to look at them, and then sends you to lunch, then you come back and have to answer questions about those maps.
Hey there, I am 40 years old this year I’m looking and have already applied to the fire department in the county I live in. Three reasons I love leader ship I love maintaining individual/team equipment, And I love being a part of a team and going through the ups and downs with those members. As I work in garden centers/ nurseries in retail environments, Civil service is in could look like a dramatic change. I have a physical ability test scheduled next week for the past year after being able to help through Lowe’s those who were affected by a tornado I looked at some civil service type jobs fire fighter stood out. Therefore I’ve been training for the last seven months running push-ups sit ups I’m already in good shape it is by far has gotten me to my peak. I think the biggest obstacle is my age what are your thoughts on this are there anyone in other departments that I’ve joined this late in their life.

I’m taking this exam for a fire department in my area. I’ve been studying the whole month from brushing up on math and other things. I’m only 19 going into this, any suggestions?

It is a good one off guide for passing your firefight interview easily using this guide without the normal expense. When he says taking test after test after test it confuses me . I live in Indiana have been applying to all the departments for two years , I am just now getting the opportunity to take a test for one , if I fail I feel like I won’t get another shot for a long time . Am I going about this process wrong ? How are you guys getting so many chances to test ?

If I’m dyslexic should I tell them/ bring proof ? Don’t really want to stand out as that guy however this means it takes me longer to read therefore longer to complete tests than others so I don’t want to stand out in that way either.. anyone with experience able to give their thoughts?

Nice video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you heard about - Rozardner Lucky Interview Reality (do a google search)? It is a great exclusive guide for firefighter interview tips without the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my GF at very last got excellent results with it.

So basically you are telling this is not possible to take a test 1st time and usually people need take test after test… so at least twice.
Does it mean if I fail I can apply again at the same academy ?

Hello unfortunately I didn’t pass my test they told me in an email it is just pass or fail and that if need to get above a 70% so i don’t know how close i was to that 70% but they also said i won’t be able to take it again until next year I just wanted to know if that was normal(this is a career department by the way) I’m confused as to why I’d have to wait a whole year and not maybe a couple weeks or months to retake the written exam and what could my next choice of action should be I’m also looking into volunteer departments in my area but I’m worried the same thing might happen I fail and have to wait another year to retest
It’s very normal, they usually have to wait for spots to open up, it really depends on when people either leave or retire
