Nightmare Eyes it’s a mystery as to what happened to him.. first he changed his channel name and then his videos were gone.
"Actually" no I've not been able to get any info on why he deleted his channel and just dropped off. I've asked a couple people but nobody that I've asked knows what's up.
I never understood the meat patties. Eating them sitting on the ground, cold, with a spoon was a bit more work than I cared for. I ended up trading them off most of the time. The grape jelly was always a favorite though!

Tasted very similar to the salsberry steaks I've eaten for lunch so many times. The meat was a touch better in the mre than the TV dinners I've had though. Thank ya for watchin and commenting...Later.
That was "actually" a pretty great review there, Smokey! Old frozen MREs are (as far as I'm aware) a VERY rare thing to find. Don't know if you saw the one I did a couple years ago. Steve acquired a number of 1995 era MREs that had been frozen for around 20 years(!). He reviewed a number of them and very generously sent one to me to check out. Like yours, my review ended up being quite lengthy (longest vid I've ever posted in fact). But it was an awesome thing to try out and I just HAD to share the entire experience with the viewers. Also, I have had one of those cool arctic canteens with its cover since I was a kid, but I never had the cup. That was very cool to see! Oh, and one more thing--I reviewed a 2008 Meatloaf MRE about four years ago or so! Sorry for the long comment, but, well, you know...
"Actually " I have just seem you meatloaf review pop up in my recommended list after I had posted this. I watched it of course. I think you got to enjoy one of the freshest possible 08 was close to the last year if I'm not mistaken. I have seen Steves, and your review of the frozen mre years ago. I think I've seen all the videos that had anything to do with Jerry Sullivan. That guy had and kept some amazing ration items over the years. I was super surprised to have found these frozen mres myself. I've actually been meaning to get with you and see if you'd want to get one of these. Unfortunately I can afford to just send them to everyone like I'd love to but what I'll do is give them to the reviewers at cost. The guy I got them from actually charged me a bit more than I wanted to pay but how could I say no. I didn't just pay what he wanted but I ended up giving him 15 plus shipping in the end. So just hit me up I can give you my number to text me some time through PM on mreinfo.com if you want. I'm horrible at checking emails and I don't want to put my number on here anywhere. Oh and that canteen cup is really cool. I have the canteen, cup, and cover. I will be using them in my first RCW review this winter. As you can tell I'm long winded. I'm stopping myself from saying more haha. One more thing this video was an hour and 25 minutes before I edited it down. I could have easily made over an hour video...especially if I had shown the other frozen ones as well. Which I really wanted to do.
Ha ha, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's long winded! Yeah, it can be very tough to edit something you personally find so fascinating down to a length that is manageable for the average viewer who might not care so much about all the "little things". Don't know if I'd be able to swing one of those frozen gems at the moment, but let me shoot you a PM over at MREInfo and we can at least discuss things! Thanks so much for the offer. Brayden still we pay enough money as it is to play and as a origional xbox live member and owner since 2002. Even on 360 i never had a problem getting banned. When halo 3 and cod 4 came out everyone was talking mad shit because it made it fun. Now you can't even abrviate the word "FU" to some1 with out getting reported by a 10 year old playing GTA 5. When I got banned for 2 weeks because a troll reporting me for no reason! And the fact multiple Microsoft customer support employees agreed with me on the phone that the enforcement team is a joke and there is nothing they do but refer me to their website that has no way at all to contact them. I had a huge and respectable collection from all three Xbox sytems. As a 15 year buyer and subscriber microsoft gave me the🖕. I sold everything on Craigslist and i am still very angry I won't be playing any of my games I had months or years of playing into, and all the wasted DLC $. Fuck MICROSOFT!

They stopped making the meatloaf a long time ago and I was super lucky to have gotten to try one that actually tasted like it did when it first came out.

It's kind of a catch phrase, not sure who started it, but I know SteveMRE has been saying it pretty much from the start.
Just kinda the logical thing to say I think. If I try to say something else it sounds unnatural. Steve1989 always says "Let's get this out on to the tray........NICE".

Some MRE testers discovered that old FRHs do not function. That is because the metallic filings inside the heating element have oxidized and are no longer effective. But this FRH has been sitting in a freezer for eleven years which no doubt helped preserve it. Many nations enthusiastically copied the American FRH. But all of them added one minor change. Their FRH bags are larger than the U.S. FRH, for good reason as this video demonstrates. The American FRH bag needs to be increased in size to accommodate the main entree retort package and anything else that needs warming.

I do love the back stories thanks. Nice to see the iced tea with lemon and sugar. The tea probably smells funny because it has real sugar in it LOL. I am glad to see that some people decided to freeze these older MREs I would like to see how some of these newer ones after they have been frozen for a decade or two. Man I would eat this meal in a heartbeat. it looks fantastic thanks for the great review.
I've thought about going ahead and freezing some 2015s I've had for about 8 months now. Then I'm also contemplating keeping one of these frozen ones for about a year to see if they hold up after being thawed out. I think it should be jusat fine but then again it could start breaking down alot faster since it has been previously frozen for years. I do have one that I'm doing for Thanksgiving....it's Turkey with Gravy and potatoes. Hey I really appreciate ya watchin and especially enjoy your comments. Damn I wish they still made meatloaf and gravy...that looks awesome! I would have expected the mashies to crystallize a little bit, I'm impressed it all held up so well

Liked it! Opening a case of grape jelly at my dad's cafe and getting the first one out was a treat.
Cases of just about anything are always fun to open I think.

Mike Marino definitely agree with you on that.
The things in any MRE that really need to be tested would be things that contain nuts or butter- which will go rancid over time- and anything canned, which will take on the metallic taste of the can as the acids in the food react with it over time.
An interesting longitudinal study would be to get several dozen of these and store them in various conditions from a general storeroom temperature through to a deep freezer. Store them for at least a year beyond the recommended shelf life and then test one a year for the next ten years or so.
An expensive and time consuming exercise, to be certain. But you've got to reckon that the military, among other organisations, would be interested in your results.

I'd love to tackle that task. If I had the means to store them in 3 different environments and had the extra cash to get all the duplicates that I'd need to perform the test. I know Natick has a way to speed up the aging process somehow and they test extreme heats as well. I've also saw some cool test of mres that were 25 to 30 years old look to see if the had any bad bacteria in the. Surprisingly they did not and we're perfectly safe to eat.
A new segment would be interesting, "Old Smokey's Mail Bag" or something like that.
Exactly fan mail segment then depending on what shows up then might be spin offs from that.

You should check out the last review I put out. It was a 25 year old Corned Beef hash that wasn't frozen and was in absolutely perfect condition. It's my favorite video I've put out by far.

Back when I was on active duty retired almost ten years ago this one was always my favorite throw the meatloaf and potatoes on the potbelly heater or on the block and man good eats but man these were for late 90s early 2000s this was in my opinion the best mre to get that or a old beef stew 13F2P

You can't ever go wrong with the classic beef stew. I had a 1999 menu #1 beefsteak that I really liked. Turns out the Turkey Breast with Gravy and potatoes was pretty decent too. But they could have made that meal more balanced if they had tried.

Old Smokey spent 7:28 minutes gabbing endlessly, patting and squeezing the MRE bag, and incessantly waving his hand around in front of the camera. He doesn't know that in some cultures, waving your hand around in someone's face is a threatening and menacing gesture presaging a personal physical attack. Best to keep your hands at your side. Even U.S. Army and Marines drill instructors are trained to keep their hands at their sides when yelling in a recruit's face.
Other than that, I'll compliment Old Smokey on his enthusiasm, if not his excitedly gesticulating hand, plus indeed showing us an old MRE whose entree is no longer manufactured. The U.S. Army got into the habit back at the end of the 1980s of periodically switching out MRE entrees to newer and different offerings. This practice, as might be expected, resulted in hits and misses. Some popular entrees got dropped simply for the sake of change. Other entrees proved wildly unpopular, making people wonder why makes the nutritional scientist researchers at Natick Labs choose this entree over this one. Is it group think? It's not unprecedented.
Back just at the start of the U.S. involvement in WW2, at the U.S. Army food research labs, some full bird colonel's eccentric, twisted logic led to the development of a tasteless, bland, chocolate D bar, meant for emergency use. The full bird colonel reasoned, wrongly, that it was necessary to make food unpalatable so that soldiers would not be tempted to eat too much of it. Today that line of illogical reasoning has been totally debunked. Making military rations unpalatable will cause soldiers not to eat their rations and become malnourished. I'm surprised no one told this full bird colonel any different. It's probable some researchers might have disagreed with him but no doubt he used his full colonel's rank to bully his opinion into acceptance. There was no general around to overrule him. No one knows what happened to the millions of uneaten D bars at the end of WW2. Certainly none turned up in the later Korean War, five years later. The colonel got his wish. No one ate the D bars. Thank goodness he kept his hands out of the K rations and the C rations.

They are not meant to last forever.....But can if properly stored....FREEZE is the best way to know they will last forever...Check out the Mastodon that was defrosted and they ate the meat from it and it was GREAT!! Cheers!!

I "actually" thought that myself but I'm not sure that's the case. With the military who knows sometimes it's really simple then others it's insanely difficult what the codes mean.

Just came into four from 2005. None of them were frozen, but would you happen to know how long it takes for the fruit to ferment? one of them had pineapples in it, not sure if its aged to its full potential yet
That's one of those things that really depends on how they were stored. I've had fruit from an 06 that was just fine but I've also had fruit from an 08 that was long gone and awful. The pineapples usually turn kinda brown and get a strange taste once they've gone bad. That's been my experience with them. I'll say I like the old aged applesauce. I know that might be weird but I like how it changes over time. Like the figs are awesome to after a long time in my opinion.

I only took pain meds for 24hrs after my last surgery. The one before I was on them a long time.

Wish I would have seen this sooner, I got some rations from the same date not long term frozen you could have compared to lol just ate a veggie burger with BBQ sauce, everything okay, raisins weren't the best but not fermented. Thanks for the video

I'd love to do some vlog type videos but my life is super, super boring at the moment. That and I can't really afford to take trips or anything right now. Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to take some trips and make some content about it. I really want to take my kids to D.C and Colorado. There's a museum in Colorado that looks amazing. It's a military history museum with all live guns, and ammo. There's also a shooting range there to shoot that looks awesome.

I'm sure if you were involved in Katrina that you probably needed them. It's crazy alot of International rations were sent over for that and nobody got any because the U.S government refused to hand them out.

The only one I know of is not military. BlackDogBob created one for Animal Free MRE and they reviewed it over in their channel a while back. It's the custom mre that Bob's doing now. I'd love to see some non GMO, healthy alternatives.

Is all good. I realize alot about myself during this video. Things I'll be trying not to do as often. I'm more than happy to get constructive criticism....trust me. It only helps me get better at what I'm doing. I was "actually" more nervous than anything. This was one that if I messed up there's only one like it.

How long was the defrost time ?
It took about 2 weeks to slow thaw them. Idk if we did it right we just did it as slowly as possible.
So the chocolate éclairs were just a dream XD I can't eat them ....as sugar makes me sweat :(

Yeah I used to say it a bunch but since this video I've worked on that alot and I don't say it anywhere near like I used to. I'm sure it's a nervous habit. Filming yourself is alot tougher than it looks.

I posted a time in the very beginning for you to skip the information about this particular mre. It's not every day you find mres that have been frozen for years. That being said I think it's important to put the information out there with the ration. But honestly this video isn't one of my better videos by a long shot in my opnion. I did cut as much as I could from this video. I wish I could have gotten it around 20-25 minutes but when your filming yourself it's hard to tell what it's going to turn out to be in the end.
