Video Games being the reason for Gamers to learn another language is WAY more common than you think it is... especcially for non-english native speakers...
Because while MOST games from all over the world get an english localisation at some time... most languages never get localisations.
And I personally learned enough Japanese two finish 2 old japanese only GBA games.

I did play Black 2 before release in the states, but I don’t know Japanese. I learned what most of the moves were, with the animations/typing/pp, and kinda made up the story as I went along. The only problem was the Plasma ship, since you needed passwords to get to Colress, but at that point people had already posted guides. Other than that, if you understand Pokémon, most of the games are straight forward enough to play blind

Have you ever considered mr. mime instead of lapras? You can get an abra to trade from the casino and you can trade it on route 2. Moreover you can do it before the third gym and before the rocket hideout, you can use the psychic TM as soon as you get the mr.mime and, since it's a traded pokemon, it levels up faster! Psychic seems a good move for the whole run (with STAB too...)
