    Tommy Farr was a very hard man - brought up hard in the impoverished Welsh coal-mining community. Skilled boxer, sharp but not devastating puncher. He was a genuine challenge for the young heavyweight champion Joe Louis. Joe proved in this fight that he could go the distance against quality opposition. And he won quite comfortably on points. Tommy established himself as one of the greatest British heavyweights of all time. The deciding factor was Louis' superior hand-speed - but Farr made him work hard for his victory.

      @@jackwoods535 in my opinion Farr won hands down. I was so frustrated with this announcer Tommy hit and connected more times than Lewis doubled down even. Gggrrrr I don't like the outcome. Oh well. The past.

      Excellent summary, Mr. Sweeting.
      The Brown Bomber won hands down on points and fired far more accurately. You can tell by Tommy's face vrs Joe's by the end of the match.

      @@BrotherPatriot I wouldn't call it "hands down," at all, in fact not even close to it. Actually, a strong case can be made for Farr winning this fight.

    This commentary has been dubbed on years after the actual fight. The commentator is of a later era and he knows the result of the fight. A good close fight. Great display by Farr. Hard to give an accurate assessment as not all the fight is shown. This commentary was not done at the actual time of the fight.

      These are the judges scorecards:
      Referee: Arthur Donovan 13-1
      Judge: Billy 'Kid' McPartland 9-6
      Judge: Charley Lynch 8-5
      Tommy gave a good account of himself but was thoroughly outboxed.

    Amazing. They never talk about this fight --Farr seems to have no fear of engaging Louis, & counters louis' hooks with hooks to the body; he also can be seen double-jabbing to Louis' single jabs, in effect out-jabbing Louis. When Louis hits Farr with clean head shots, Farr seems unfazed, too!

    • @robotboy719
      @robotboy719 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unfazed? At the end of the fight, Farr could barely stand up. Louis' jab was a steak knife, carving Farr's face, while Farr's jabs had little effect on the champion, most of them being deflected off his gloves. No doubt Farr gave a solid performance though.

    • @garymorris1856
      @garymorris1856 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, this fight is largely forgotten, but a case can be made for Farr getting the decision.

  • @robotboy719
    @robotboy719 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Farr was definitely the showier of the two, and when he jumped in and swung those wide punches it looks like he's scoring big. However, notice how often Louis is punching inside Farr's rushes, banging him to the body or landing short hook-uppercuts to the chin. Which isn't to say that Farr didn't test Louis, who had problems with guys who gave him a lot of movement and moved in and out. If there was a weakness to Louis, it was that he could be a plodder, and he liked his target to stay in front of him.

    • @Pedro_Le_Chef

      Louis never lost to a "mover" once in his career. He usually knocked them out or thoroughly outboxed, as is what happened in this fight.

      @oopssugar score cards clearly show Joe winning. Farr was a really great boxer though, and tough as hell! I think they were all tougher back then, more on the line, harder way of life, and brought up knowing you had to work really hard for everything and anything you had or needed. Much different mentality back then compared to today's fighters.

      Anyone who thinks they gave Joe anything that he didn't truly earn or deserve would be greatly wrong, especially back then, in this time period, hate to bring race into it but it is what it is, nothing was just given to people of color back then. Joe fought hard, fought well, and was truly a more skilled boxer than most. And he packed a whallup in those fists!
