- I recorded this video in Valletta, Malta, with a Panasonic HC-V785 camcorder in broad daylight and under good conditions.
Valletta is a city with a legendary past and a unique character. Malta's UNESCO-listed capital proudly stands as one of Europe's largest harbors, surrounded by one of the world's most formidable fortifications. The city's history dates back to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, an 11th-century order that provided refuge to pilgrims in the Holy Land and played a military role in defending Christianity. In 1530, King Charles V of Spain granted Malta to the knights.
After Valletta became the new military stronghold of the Order of St. John, the knights were determined to create a capital that could rival the great cities of Europe. The magnificent Baroque architecture reflects the aristocratic origins of the knights, who hailed from the noblest families of England, France, Spain, and other European countries. Valletta is often referred to as 'a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen.'
Today, Valletta is a bustling city and a fascinating tourist destination, full of cultural attractions. Narrow streets are lined with Baroque chapels and restaurants offering exquisite cuisine, the air is heavy with the scent of the ocean, and from the city walls, there are breathtaking views of the harbor. At sunset, the city, glowing in every shade of gold, seems to catch fire.
