    I had a 1980 american-made Stratocaster that I had scalloped out myself(I'm a decent luthier. I'm not a master builder but I can refret a guitar with no problems). My 1980 USA strat was stolen one time. I went to a blues concert in a bar about six years after my guitar had been stolen. The guy on stage was playing MY guitar. And I knew him personally. After the show I went backstage and confronted him.I bluffed him and told him I had all the receipts warranty case candy and everything filled out submitted to the police department and fender (I was
    B.S.ing him. I was willing to say anything to get my guitar back). Because he was scared of prosecution he gave it back. And he had lacquered the entire fingerboard (and mind you it was a scalloped fingerboard) and to be totally honest I hated the way it looked, but it really did help the fretboard to stay in good shape over the years. So I didn't bother trying to remove it. It is still my number one. I didn't press charges against him for stealing it, but I did totally cut off our friendship forever. He was a junkie and I think he was trying to sell it but nobody would buy it because I had done so much modifications to it. But I was happy as hell cuz I had my "number one" back.✌️😀✌️

    LOVING this series, I've been reading Huw's column in Guitar for maybe 18 years, and I love it, it's always the highlight of my issue. Really glad to discover this channel and this series.

    Hi, very interesting restoration, I appreciate these videos are snapshots of the restoration process; in view of anyone watching this video and having a go themselves that they would need to check the neck and fingerboard was level with a straight edge before any sanding of the fretboard by adjusting the truss rod if the neck needs be straightened. Really enjoying your videos, I met Chris at a fairly recent gig in Derby who kindly tried out my pedals I make before he and his band went on stage.

    • @tonetwinstv2863
      @tonetwinstv2863  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes Gary, it's just a snapshot. If I ever get to write some articles on this - or more appropriately a book - then more detail can be provided. These vids shouldn't be regarded as instructional per se. It's more about documenting the general process.

If you don’t use the set that’s been removed it would be interesting to see /hear what pickups go in ....another video at least !👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    You have to remember back in the early years of this guitar's life it was not a 'vintage' guitar. Its worth and reverence has only come later.

      Yeah, the idea of someone in 50 years taking issue with a modification I've done to one of my own guitars is absolutely bonkers to me. Guitars are instruments to be played and modified to suit the player's needs. If you don't like what a previous owner did to the guitar, too bad; you're only the second owner.

    This is what my mate did to his brother's '72 Strat in about 1982:
    Stripped & refinished in clear coat.
    Routed out for a bridge humbucker using a hammer & screwdriver.
    Brass nut, trem, & pickguard from Mighty Mite (I think).
    Dimarzio Super Distortion Humbucker.
    Single volume.
    EVH has a lot to answer for.
    His brother's '69 Tele only survived unmolested because, who wanted to play a Tele in '82 if they weren't a member of Status Quo?
    Sigh.
    My '78 Japanese Strat copy still has a Kahler on it.
    Ah. The '80's eh?

    • @josevillegas9029

      Steve Kellett interesting to see many 50s and 60s strats survive the crazy 80s

    • @omikl
      @omikl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@josevillegas9029 Remember. In 1979 or 1980 it was just "An old guitar"
      I am from the UK, and I was a teen in the '70's. I used to get the weekly music papers and there were always used musical instruments for sale in the classified advertisements. A used Strat, and it didn't matter one bit if it was a 1954 or a 1977, would be priced between 200 to 230 pounds sterling, and a Tele between 175 and 215. As I recall those prices stayed the same from 1975 to about 1978. I was offered a Fiesta Red 1963 Tele in 1978 for 150 pounds.
      Those numbers look small, but there has been a lot of inflation since.
      In 1978 I took a Summer job as a factory labourer and earned about 35 pounds per week.. I could have raised a family on that!

    Why address the lower varnish after fret installation? Wouldn’t it be easier just to do it now and not have to worry about protecting the fret job?

    • @tonetwinstv2863
      @tonetwinstv2863  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be going in between the frets with 0000 grade wire wool after they're installed. I like polishing the crowned frets with wire wool anyway, and leaving it until later ensures that the frets will protect the board in the areas around the slots that I sanded flat while the last of the varnish is being removed. And the frets get their initial polish at the same time.

    3 switches, probably to switch on/off pickups separately with off phase sounds, varnish in the fretboard, VOX amps.... Red Special and Brian May anyone? Maybe our previous owner got turned on by all those things in Queen´s sound during the late 70´s... this is all conjecture of course. The story is quite amazing and probably none or guesses are right but we should keep guessing! Thanks for the videos!

    My local repair shop applied fingerboard stain to my 1955 Les Paul Junior when I had it refretted essentially covering over what was a gorgeous lighter brown Brazilian fretboard with really nice streaking. Any tips on how to restore it back to the original raw wood?

    • @joshmorris1649
      @joshmorris1649 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they put stain on then that was very stupid of them to do and im not sure why they would. However if they put oil on it which left it with a darker look that makes more sense, wood lightens in color when dry, and you dont want your fingerboard overly dry nor overly oiled. I have a 1960 es330 and i use linseed oil just about every 6 months, doesnt hurt it at all, and is actually good for it. Your fingerboard may have been overly dry giving it a lighter color and now having been oiled it appears darker but you should still be able to see the grain.

    Here in the states there's a product called "Fornsby's" used for refinishing and stripping antique furniture that's been abused with modern paints and finishes ie someone took a can of Hot pink automotive spray paint to a 150 year old Shaker chair for their kids room. My father used it and it worked as advertised. You apply it and the junk that was on the wood just wipes right off with a rag leaving a clean natural looking surface. I don't know if its available in the UK but it would probably take care of the junk on the finger board.

    Very nice disguising the divot at the 4th fret? I think it was. Very nice. Would it have ultimately been cheaper to just source a period correct vintage neck as a full replacement? I have no idea what the labor charge was for this so just curious. I also understand many people will pay more to keep the entire instrument together no matter what it takes.

    What did you do about the wear of the fingerboard, the ‘scallops’ between the frets? You said you were trying to avoid removing any wood but surely the scallops can’t be flattened out unless you sand the whole board down?

    • @tonetwinstv2863
      @tonetwinstv2863  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're not doing anything about the scallops. The sanding process is only intended to level the board across the top of the fret slots and the veneer on these Fenders is so thin, I wouldn't want to compromise the feel of the neck or sand through the dots in an attempt to level the whole thing. When you fret a guitar, especially with high frets, the string makes little or no contact with the board. If you press harder to make that contact, you'll notice the guitar sounds out of tune. So the 'scallops' will remain and in all likelihood, Chris will hardly notice they're there. If it works for Blackmore, Yngwie and Vai...

      Interesting. That's sort of why we were asking in the video. My hunch is that there were one or two guitar techs in our area that were doing this back in the day.

      ty Mills Surely the point of any musician’s instrument is to make it playable, not to just look old? I guess Chris Buck has asked for the guitar to be made useable, which is what Huw Price has achieved.
