Okay update I just had it, fortunately the paper was fairly easy. The summary barely had any implicit points and the 3rd bullet point for directed writing was actually very direct. Thought the only issue was that I was little short on time so I feel it’s not my best work. Hopefully I can make up for the silly mistakes in paper 2.
Great video sir! You are a life saver my teacher is way too lenient with us and i feel so unprepared for Cambridge oct/nov 2021 :( but with your help im sure im going to ace it! :D
Hi, we've found your videos really helpful! Can you please advise if it is okay for a summary to be way less, (lets say 80 words), than the allowed 120, provided all the points have still been answered? Or would it be better to add more to the answer, using adjectives etc.
You won't get penalized for being under... However, one may argue that 120 words isn't an awful lot to try and reach, particularly if you are summarising two things.
Thank you so much! It helped me a lot because I just tend to study at the very last hours of the paper but your video made everything far more easier for me
I found this video and the other one on directed writing to be extremely helpful, my paper 1 exam is actually tomorrow. Do you think it's most likely going to be a letter or a journal entry?
This was very helpful. Thank you! I am new to teaching FLE. Could you please make videos about how you mark students' works as well. Sometimes the marking scheme can be quite vague and I have trouble deciding what mark to give to my student's work.
What I am struggling right now is the timing. Even though summary is said to be the easy one in first language, it is not the case for me. Sometimes, I cannot find the required answers from the text, even if I can do, it takes a lot more time to get the correct answers which delay me from doing other questions. I have practised a lot of past papers and I still cannot seem to improve. This isn't the only thing that happens with summary. It happens with any other questions too. It's just i need more time to get required answers and quality writing. I feel like I was just being greedy taking first language, trying to reach a standard that is way too far away from me.
I don't know where people get this impression that it's the easiest question... There's quite a lot to summarising successfully. I would practise summarising away from an exam text first of all, so you can practise using the correct tone and register. You want to be able to do this question in about 20-25 mins. The process is this: find relevant ideas, usually about 10, number them with the order you want to include them, write a focused topic sentence, including the key words of the question, start to summarise. Don't forget to reword, where appropriate and use connectives to help structure your ideas.
well i somehow manage to not go over the word limit but i always manage to go under it like not to 100 or 110 words under i always mange to write the summary in 80 words or below and struggle to add information that is not irrelevent to the question so what can i do??
An ancient molly mammoth called Lyuba has been found recently, along with its unearthing came a series of wonders. The reason that makes Lyuba such a fascinating discovery is that Lyuba was the most well-secured mammoth ever presented, not to mention the fact that it was dated 40,000 years ago. On top of that, ancient mammoth findings are rare because most people would sell the creature’s body for profit. Scientists are studying Lyuba to obtain precious information about the Ice Age and the Earth’s change of environment through several examinations. They are also trying to take her DNA sample to reveal more secrets, like where she originated.
