Hi there. Thanks for the review. I’m a video guy and looking to buy a small mobile pa setup for speaking seminars. Someone’s selling a pair for about $350 USD here in Australia. To be honest, I don’t know too much about live sound setups, but I do appreciate good sound. I have a couple of rackmount Sennheiser mic receivers and was thinking that a mixer with 2 powered speakers would be the way to go, giving me the flexibility to use just one speaker for small meetings. At this stage I don’t want to spend much more on that while I’m finding my feet. My question is, how are these speakers for spoken word? The freq response seems pretty flat, and perhaps a mixer with 3 band eq would give nice sound? Or is there a better option? Should I be looking for smaller speakers with a higher quality output for my needs, or perhaps starting with just one higher quality speaker might be better? I don’t know. You’re the first review I’ve seen, and I’d appreciate your opinion since you clearly are fussy about you sound. As you should be! Cheers from Sydney for any advice, and thanks again for the review. Andrew
I've been using DXR12's for floor monitors with rock bands and they're great. My question is would DBR10's work "almost" as well? I'm trying to get a smaller footprint but not lose to much volume & tone. I like the size, weight & price of the DBR10's Thanks
Sonically I think they're very close and I did I barn demo video comparing them. Volume wise I think the DXR12 would definitely run away from it in my experience as a main but as a floor wedge I think the DBR10 would be more than adequate for vocals and maybe a little guitar mixed in. Though I have the DBR10s, I've not used them as monitors so I can't speak to that too much though. I've only used them as mains for an acoustic duo. Edit: I know it's been a year and you've probably made a decision but just in case you haven't...
I own a pair of these speakers and for me it's really good I don't agree with you because I did put it side by side with a qsc k10 and harbinger and i really enjoy the quality of de dbr but i respect your point of view for me they are not cheap speaker for me cheap means 200 -250 but its my opinion.
Good review man....again. Off topic..I own DXR15 s and was thinking of getting a couple of subs. Do you still wish you bought two DXS15mkII over the DXS18xlf, in terms of weight? Think you mentioned that in a comment after your your dxs18 review. Thanks from the UK.
I think I made the right choice when it comes to subwoofers. I now have 4 of the DXS12MKII's and they work great for small to mid-sized shows. Very good output for such a small subwoofer. I still just have two of the DXS18XLF's but I do plan on buying more. I like the idea of having a small lower cost sub for small shows that maybe isn't paying me the best and then also having the top of the line DXS18XLF for the larger shows that require good deep and loud bass. So while the 15's would come in handy here and there I think I made a good choice for my company to stick with just two models of subwoofers going forward. I don't remember if I had mentioned this but prior to this decision we had 5 different models of subwoofers in our inventory. Now with that being said. The DXS12MKII is a great subwoofer so if you chose to go with the DXS15MKII I think you would like it and one major benefit is that you don't have to worry about scratching or denting the front grill. The real issue here is there just isn't enough money to buy everything. lol
can't wait to see your vid whit the Yamaha dxs18 xlf in action. Also it would be super cool if you do a series of video episodes opening some of your boxes (like de dxsxlf) to show the insides , speaker and other components. I Saw trinityprosound do it but only whit european like brands. Maybe it would be good for you and for us to see more in detail the productos. Thanks !!
I watch a lot of trinityprosound's videos. My only complaint with them is everything they touch sounds amazing. They never have anything bad to say about the speakers they take apart because they are trying to sell them. I'll think about doing take it apart videos. Not sure if I have enough space in my shop for that or not. As for the DXS18XLF I hate to say it but I haven't used them once yet at an event. I haven't bought tops to go with them so I've still been using our DAS Audio Vantec series stuff for bigger shows.
Hello , thank you for the review. You mentioned that you have also experience with Stagepas 600. Could you please share your thoughts about comparison of the sound between DBR10 and Stagepas 600? Do they sound same? I'm considerring DBR10 / DBR12 / Stagepas 600 as small "party" DJ PA system (in the garden or indoor for about 50 people). I have hard time to decide which one to choose. I suppose DBR12 will sound best, but is also slightly bigger - I'm kinda space limited in my apartement :-)
I used to own the original K series K12's and K8's but I have not owned any DXR speakers yet. I'm waiting for the DXR MKII's to come out this fall before purchasing. Just a side note since I cannot comment on comparing audio quality. I will say I don't like the way QSC does their coverage patterns. The do an Axisymetric coverage pattern on the K series which I believe can lead to high end reflections on floors and ceilings. I prefer the more common 90x60 coverage pattern on the Yamaha. QSC has reasoning behind using an Axisymetric coverage pattern so I think that might come down to personal preference.
I'd only get a 10" monitor if it's just speech or light music. If you have a bass or a lot of instruments going through the monitor I'd get a 12". I just ordered a Mackie DRM212 to test out as my new stage monitor speaker. To date I've been using DAS Audio Action 12A's for monitors. I prefer wood for stage monitors but that's mainly because I have a lot of musicians that like to put their feet on them. Wood is a little heavier and harder to rock backwards with a foot on it.
Hmmmmm I don't think I would use them for a home stereo system. Any gig you'd use these for would require a subwoofer so I'm not sure how much bass you want in your living room but I'm thinking you'd probably want something to fill out the low end a bit.
I have not had a chance to listen to the Air10's. There was a point in time where I thought about trying them out but I never pulled the trigger on buying them.

Got introduced to Turbosound in 2017 and have been using 2 - iP2000 + 1 - iQ15b and pushed it (maybe not the best idea) with ballroom crowds of over 300 ppl. Your other video comment of going back to point source is aligned with my thinking! My question is, for a monthly gig guy, do you think 1-DXS15mkII + 2-DBR12 would hold well for 250 ppl (max)??? No worries about having a long comment. Have you seen the length of some of my videos? lol I babble on forever! Anyways to get to your question. Yes I think you would be just fine with 1 DXS15MKII and 2 DBR12's. I'd personally rather have that setup than the Turbosounds you're currently using. I plan on using my 2 DXS12MKII's and DBR10's (soon to be DXR10MKII's) with crowds up to 250 people. You might even get better sound out of the DBR12's as they have a larger compression driver than the DBR10's I did my review on.
@@TheAngrySoundTech Thanks man. I learned (much like you did) from experience that my needs are better fulfilled with point source...and I miss the Yamaha sound that required minimal manipulation!
@@TheAngrySoundTech they are, my point was that yamaha could have labelled these Dbr12 or 15s CBR12P. In addition if yamaha have only added an amp then how can the same drivers produce 1000w and 132db compared to the CBR12 which could only achieve 125db and is 350w. Yamaha exaggerate their ratings.
Watts sell speakers. All manufacturers know this and hype big wattage numbers. It's not necessarily what the driver can handle but what the amp is capable of putting out in short bursts. The only time wattage numbers are accurate is when buying passive speakers. Do you think Mackie's DLM8 can really handle 2,000 watts in an 8 inch speaker?
