The Pentax Spotmatic was formally introduced in 1964, coinciding with the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Talk about good marketing & timing. Cameras were sold and film kiosks were located throughout the Olympic games area. Quality, TTL, sharp photos were an obvious hit. Stick w the Takumar M42 lenses and you can't go wrong. Try the Takumar 50mm f 1.4 lens, which is a gem of a lens. Well done & Bravo for using the classic Pentax 👏

My dad purchased a spotmatic in Singapore in 1964 and even today I’m still looking at the fabulous images he took back then, both slides and negatives. Still my favourite old camera and the 200mm Len’s is superb today.

Ah a lovely piece of family history. I’ve never tried a 200mm on the Spotmatic. Might have to keep an eye out for one.

If you can find one in reasonably working order put some film in
They got the engineering right with this camera

    Love Pentax!!
I have this very same camera!
Takes beautiful shots even after nearly 60 years.
    Thanks for this video!
    I also own a ES II, a K1000, a MV, a ME, and a SP1000!
I have a collection of almost 300 film cameras, but the Pentax brand will always be my favorite!

I have a big collection of Sotmatics from the Original SP through the the complete range SPII SP500 SP1000 SPF Spotmatic ES and ESII also the Unmetered SL. I have several copies of each in chrome and black plus many Takumar lenses. They can be very cheap here in the UK if you are patient and keep your eyes open. Charity shops plus eBay are my favorite places to find them. I got 2 spotmatics plus SMC lenses yesterday for £26.

    • @NorbiWhitney
      @NorbiWhitney  ปีที่แล้ว

Wow quite a collection. I've only ever found 1 camera in a charity shop, and it was a plastic no name p&s. But I don't do a lot of searching... your £26 pickup has inspired me though!

Pentax has an M42 adapter for the K mount. Its exactly the same flange distance. In terms of available lenses, one can use even modern Pentax lenses on older bodies.
Saying that Pentax K mount doesn't have a lot of lens options simply dont know what they are talking about. It is the only SLR mount that is still alive.
So I would recommend the K1000, KM, KX, MX, all of which are fully mechanical, as Spotmatic alternatives. The KX and MX have shutter spead and aperture read out in the viewfinder.

Don't know if you're still out there, but thanks! I have two Spotmatic SPs (one is a brick and is a shelf queen), one works with a questionable light meter and another on the way from KEH. The SP was the first SLR I ever used (a buddy's rig). I have a soft spot in my heart for them and for Minolta SRTs.

Wait. I love my Spotmatic F, but I started with a K-1000 when I was 12. Over the years, I've collected 14 various film and digital PENTAX cameras. One thing I've have got to offer as a correction is this, there were and have been literally Thousands of bayonet K Mount lenses of differing types produced by numerous lens manufacturers over the years. ASAHI PENTAX, Albinar, Ricoh, Tamron, Tokina, Vivitar, Sigma, Cosina, Bell and Howell, even Sears and K-Mart/Focal. This is just to name a few. The point being, the opposite of what you stated is true. The K mount system has a wider and more diverse and plentiful array of available lenses than almost any mounting system Ever produced. As you can see, we life-long PENTAXIANS can be a bit passionate. Just saying. Thanks for the video. Great pics btw!

Thanks for the comment. You're not the first to point it out, and I apologize for the oversight. I think at the time I assumed NegativeFeedback knew what he was talking about, and I didn't do much further research.
I've since tried to find a definitive number of how many of each mount were made, which is surprisingly hard to do. But the website allphotolenses.com lists 1162 M42 lenses, and 1156 K-Mount... so let's call it a draw.

I love my Spotmatic SP. I had an ME Super years ago but always really lusted after a Spotmatic...
I found mine on that auction site, it came as part of a collection (28, 55 & 135mm lenses) along with original leather cases & instruction manuals as it'd been in the same family since brand new.
I've added a 35mm to the kit and I'll never part with it.

The "Pentax System" from the mid to late 1960's was HUGELY POPULAR, VERY high quality, not exactly cheap, GI's bought them by the THOUSANDS at the PX between tours to Vietnam. It was all a bit before my time, I didn't discover the Spotmatic's until recently though I knew of the Pentax K1000's in the late 1980's because we used them in photo surveillance in CIA, we liked them because they worked even if the battery died, something we worried about when doing things with no second chances! Prior to actually doing CIA photo ops I had to learn operations at The Farm where I was issued a Canon AE-1 Program which I still have, a TERRIFIC camera. I myself bought a Nikon Nikomat kit on the Ginsa in Tokyo in June 1996, Japan was the first foreign country I ever visited, I still am fanatical about Asia, it was a Nikomat not Nikormat, they were the less expensive Nikon set up that used the Nikomat name in Japan and Nikormat in USA and I guess elsewhere. The kit with a 50mm f/1.4 lens, flash, leather case, bag, film, etc. cost three $100 American Express travelers checks, a LOT of money at the time but I wanted a REAL camera and something to shoot with on my further travels into Asia where I met a girl who I married in 1979 and still am with 44 years later, the fellow at the Ginza photo shop spent THREE HOURS with me showing me how to use it. I now have a Canon t3i 600D digital which I really like on which I use several of the Takumar M42 lenses with adapters, manual focus, aperture priority, works great! I have the 50mm f/1.4 7 element, 55mm f/1.8, 135mm f/3.5 and 200mm f/4 plus some Yashica, etc. M42 lenses as well, great fun, lots of bokeh, that "film look" too!

I found a Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic with 55mm f/1.8 Super Takumar lens and fitted ever-ready case, all in excellent condition last year couldn't pass up on it the seller threw in a 28mm f/2.8 Tamron screw-mount lens with the deal. Really nice simple 'old school 35mm SLR' and images shot with the Takumar lens are very sharp with rich color rendition.

Pentax Spotmatic is a real classic with a range of quality Takumar lenses. A clean, lube and adjust by an experienced
Camera technician can get the camera to full operation. They were a best seller and once waa more popular than
Nikon & Canon brands combined. They take wonderful pictures. Shoot w ISO 100 color slide film in a park or flower garden and you will be amazed.

    • @NorbiWhitney

@@NorbiWhitney The Pentax Spotmatic was very popular and outsold Canon & Nikon combined at one point. I think when Asahi Pentax was slow to move to a bayonet mount is what set others apart from Pentax. Yet we must remember that shooting film was not meant to be rapid as in our digital/shoot everything time. Film took more patience and the results were worth the effort. Keep shooting w your Pentax and posting your work.

The Canon AE-1 and AE-1 Program are a MUCH more technically advanced camera than the Pentax Spotmatic, a generation newer. The Canon's metering works and is reliable, on the Spotmatic they were pioneers, among the rist to have TTL Through the Lens metering that really worked (they came out in 1964 which was a LONG time ago in camera years) and many Spotmatics today have meters that no longer work well.

It sounds to me like your mirror is getting stuck. It’s actually really common for the Spotmatic and friends. Have a quick google for “Spotmatic mirror stuck” and you’ll find a feast of help.

K mount has a limited selection is pure crap. Pentax K has a huge selection . You have the K, M, A and third party. All m42 Takumars were ported to K mount. Do your research.
