So happy to check out more of SHINee and this new MV by KEY is top freakin' notch! Hope you guys enjoy this double reaction :)
As per usual, these are just my opinions and interpretation of the song, with Gasoline I probably got a bit far ahead of myself, but I'm happy with how the song itself and the visuals made me feel, so no regrets lol.

I loved your interpretation of Gasoline!! I think it actually works a lot! Shinee memebers are being more brazen and unapologetic since their military comeback, and Key especially has taken a very honest and outspoken public persona. They're amazing.

a lot of the credit actually goes to key not necessarily sm because he put a lot of his ideas into the his album. from all the visuals to the title itself he was outvoted by the company but he still decided to go with the name gasoline. the physical album has all his beautiful artwork too! 😊

    • @eszeezee6967

It takes a lot of trust from SM to throw big money to allow Key to do what he wants. I think it's fare to give SM that credit at the very least.

I heard that he actually prepared a 2-hour presentation before the higher-ups about the ideas he had for his album and luckily although he was given opposite ideas, in the end they decided to let him be and he went on with what he had in mind. He's a real genius 💕

@@eszeezee6967 I remember he said he fought to get Bad Love the way he wanted and look how great the album is! I think it could be the point SM thought "ok, let's trust him next time, he knows what he does" :)
The whole album is so triumphant and unapologetically his, gosh. I love it so much!

@@marzenun I remember that too. It takes 2 hands to clap. As in any business, if the employee goes beyond his/her contract in terms of effort / creativity / initiative and some out of the box thinking, the company will provide the support needed to allow that employee to grow. I seriously recommend Gasoline. The entire album itself a freaking bop. You won’t be disappointed. His evolution is absolutely outstanding. He confirms that gasoline represents himself. He won’t ever give up, he will rise. Visuals, choreography, vocality, the lyrics. Everything is personal to him. That’s what makes his music so good. You can feel the authenticity of him. His signature, his color. That’s exactly what Shinee continues to be known for. No matter what they experiment with. They always have that Shinee color, that feel. Oh and your POV is exactly what he’s going for. Spot on.

All I could think watching the MV was this has Keys fingerprints all over it. And somehow weirdly feels like a perfect mesh of second gen majestic all out approach with 4thgen vibes, and somehow its undeniably Key but also Shinee. The costumes especially. Its unique, its majestic, its all out. Its Key. Full stop.

I'm SO glad you got back to reacting to SHINee!! 😍❤️
Lucifer is one of my favorite title tracks from the group, as is View (which I highly recommend your reaction!)
One thing that SHINee is very interesting about is that most of the songs have aged very well, despite the visuals in the MVs being obviously dated 😅
About Gasoline, KEY said he put everything he wanted into this song and didn't save anything for later use. Although some of the staff were apprehensive about the decisions, we can see how everything was a great success! This MV is basically the purest essence of KEY's art! 🔥
BTW, I find it interesting to comment that SM clearly believes in the talents and opinions of SHINee members, especially Taemin and Jonghyun (who debuted as soloists respectively in 2014 and 2015)! I felt that KEY needed a little push to have that same artistic control in their solo career and Bad Love (his last year's comeback) must have been more than enough for KEY to finally prove that they deserve the same trust from the company. 💎✨
I would be really happy if you would continue to react to more SHINee work and the members' solos! I'll leave some suggestions below and hope to see more of your comments (which I really like)! 😁
SHINee: View, Married to the Music, Good Evening + I Want You
    Jonghyun: Crazy, She is, Lonely
    Minho: Heartbreak, I’m Home
Onew: Blue, Rainy Blue (live), Way
Key: Hate that, Bas Love, Another Life
Taemin: Danger, Press Your Number, Sayonara Hitori, Under my Skin

  • @TayTks
    @TayTks ปีที่แล้ว +22

SHINee (as they stand today, 14 years after debut) to me are one step apart from the rest of SM-- no disrespect to the other artists, I'm a SM stan and basically all of my favorite groups are from SM so this doesn't mean they aren't amazing. But SHINee have reached a point in their career where they have earned their keep and more. And the thing is that people talk about them being "SMs favorites" when they see these concepts and sort of gloss over the fact that the reason their concepts are so amazing is because they are involved in every step of the way. And it shows. Whenever you see a project from one of the SHINee members you know there is no one else who could do it, even if they tried.

Lucifer- Ah, the first kpop dance I learned 🥲. So much nostalgia, anyone remember Taemin's magic sweater in the dance practice?

I hadn't thought about this song as a fan-idol relationship before. Interesting interpretation
Gasoline- this song, mv, lyrics are sooo Key. This whole thing screams Key. Like, this is so clearly HIS vision. This is my favourite solo from him by far. Amazing.

Shinee & Lucifer choreo set the bar high and set the trend for boygroups to have hard & synchronized choreo, which impacts still continue until now. Back in 2010, this song & choreo were huge, people in sooo many countries tried to learn the choreo, dancers & dance studios set up special class for people to learn this choreo. People in the US were the luckiest since Rino Nakasone (Lucifer choreographer) taught them directly.

Although I haven't watched Key's "Gasoline" MV enough to really make any solid connections yet, I am pretty sure that this MV has elements of the storyline that is meant to connect to SM's SM Culture Universe story. Right from the start, you see a labyrinth-like cube floating in the air and later you see Key kneeling on the cube and then in the end he sets the cube on fire. This cube looks like the same labyrinth cube you see in WayV's "Love Talk" MV and is the exact same object you see blocking aespa's way as they travel through Kwangya in aespa's "aespa ep. 2 'Next Level' -- SM Culture Universe" video. And it could even be connected to the cube we see in EXO's storyline, such as in their "Tempo" MV, etc.
I see the cube that is floating in the air as part of SM's labyrinth concept where, like EXO, WayV might be trapped inside a maze in "Love Talk". Which, if the maze is part of the Red Forces' plot, could be why they are in a foggy dream state in "Love Talk". In EXO's storyline it is thought that the Red Force has trapped EXO in a maze and the maze dulls EXO's sense and makes it so they are unable to fight back. We often see the EXO members in a sleepy dazed state because they are under the Red Forces' control.
Therefore, what does the fact that Key sets the cube on fire in the end of "Gasoline" mean? Has he become a villain and is now teamed up with or a part of the Red Force, or is he working to take down the Red Force and stop them because he has joined Taemin and is helping SuperM?
Also the planet with the giant moon in "Gasoline" seems to be connected to Key's pervious "Bad Love" concept. In Key's "Bad Love mood sampler" video we see Key on another planet with a giant moon rising from behind a rock cliff, which looks very similar to what we see in "Gasoline." This also all could be connected to the scene where we see the giant moon rising from behind a rock formation in Taemin's Japanese solo debut "Sayonara Hitori" MV. (The "Gasoline" MV also has a similar aesthetic within the storyline as the "Sayonara Hitori" MV.) And as far as moons go, everything to do with the pull of a moon or an eclipse is connected with EXO's storyline and the fact that the moon/sun is where EXO gathers all their strength and power from.

as for Lucifer, some visuals and production of the song can be described as "dated" BUT the vocals, the harmony, the choreo, the melodies, the structure of the song is immaculate. I still listen to this song to this day.
As for Key, whatever he does, it's never mediocre or bad. Gasoline would definitely be in my top releases of this year. Key is a master of concepts. The visuals and outfits are always on point. This is just SHINee level. Everything is done perfectly. And the whole album packaging??? It's honestly so good that I'd say, it's the best k-pop album I've ever seen.

In SHINee's "Lucifer" MV the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) In other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles.
In the MV you see them trying to fight against Lucifer's powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot. For example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them, and they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc. (FYI: That vibration you saw them do is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you pay attention when they perform Lucifer live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D)
LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs, The group would dance around a fancy car to show off their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic.
"Lucifer" was released in 2010, so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then, in part because everyone was following SHINee's lead. Just take a look at TVXQ's, Super Junior's, Infinite's or 2PM's MVs, etc. from around that time and you will see a similar look and style. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with 'Lucifer."
As trendsetters it is SHINee's job to introduce the next song style and dance trend to the industry, and when SHINee has a comeback the industry takes note and follows suit. It is said that within 3 months of SHINee's comeback you will see that same sound, style and dance trend being duplicated across the industry for both boy groups and girl groups. That's how influential SHINee is.
I'm not sure why people are often so thrown by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. That is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance. You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique.
SHINee are also known for never being afraid to experiment with everything they do, including their style, and as the fashionista and stylist of the group, Key is always looking for ways to be unique, so his head was really shaved on the one side. What you see is his hair was bleached blond on the side and then shaved down to his scalp. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool.
Fun fact: I think one reason why Minho's hair is so short at this time is because their previous comeback was with their song "Ring Ding Dong," and all the members had pretty long, shaggy hairstyles. However, Minho has never liked having long hair. So, I think for "Lucifer" Minho decided to rebel and go really short.
This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair.
So, in this MV, Taemin had just turned 17. Onew and Jonghyun are 20 and Key and Minho are 18.
With SHINee's experimental concept, nothing they do will ever be like anything they have ever done before and that includes all the songs on each album. Every song and MV will be completely different from each other with a whole different, look and style every time. Whenever SHINee releases something new, the only thing we expect is that it will be a brand new sound, look and dance style that we have never seen before. That's why their discography is so diverse and why they are able to continue to stay relevant even after more than 14 years.
If you want to see where SHINee truly shines, if you haven't yet, you have to check out their iconic performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert. Check out their performance at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul from 2014, th-cam.com/video/Fm5n8Q2XO34/w-d-xo.html. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it.
"Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise which are designed to hit every beat of the song. And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and flow.
Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team," th-cam.com/video/0V02cQwYLMQ/w-d-xo.html. It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our more difficult choreography and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D

You definitely should check out the dance practice. SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice was the very first dance practice video ever released specifically for fans. SHINee is the group that started the trend and their "Lucifer" dance practice video is why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D It was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then dance practice videos were filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience. But SM realized that fans were starting to try and copy SHINee's choreography, so they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to do the same and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too.

Okay so i think that Lucifer is story about toxic relationship. At start everything was perfect, They felt in love With person that They thougth was perfect, but this person started to change, they stop to love this person, but this person don’t let them go. They was trapped by a person they loved in hope that this person can be angel again even if true face of this person was devil, and when they understood that this person only hurting them and they don’t love this person anymore they tried to escape and telling this person that maybe if they broke up that this person understand what was doing for all this time and then they be able to love this person again
Also a fun fact - this song was written by Bebe rexha and Minho’s rap part (the one in bridge) was his first self written rap

I always saw Lucifer as a take on a toxic relationship, you know the person is controlling and is manipulative and this is bad for you but you cant bring yourself to stop because the "good times" are so good, and you keep hoping the person will change and you can be happy.
On topic of Shinee I thought one of their biggest strenghts as a group was that all of the members have very unique voices. Like most idols are very good singers but very few have really unique quality to their voice. And yeah when you mentioned "acting in the singing", Jonghyun often talked about how he believed singers were storytellers, it wasnt just about singing, but telling a story and make you feel something and he changed his singing with the story/feeling he wanted to tell, or how he wanted the sound.
One of notable examples that have been memed to hell by Onew, was Jonghyuns take on Shinees Love like Oxygen where he did his best to sing Korean lyrics with a Michael Jackson singing style.
I definitely hope you react more to Shinee, they had a very interesting discography and live performances.

I love Lucifer. It's so relentles! The safest bias to have in SHINee is OT5. Each member is my bias as they do promotions for solo activities, and then when they come back as SHINee it's just all that and more. Thank you so much for your reaction!
ETA: Gasoline is a goddamned stadium anthem! The whole album is uh-maze-ing - Bound & Villain are just, ugh, everything - and if you decide to do an album reaction I'll be here for it!

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. Lucifer is not bad. My boy Taemin got great moves for the maknae of the group. Yeah the choreo is nice here. Love Taemin's pretty hair. The layered look really suits him. Best smile to me as well. Like his fit. They look like bad boys, lol. Love Replay. It's my fav song by them. SM actually does have a universe. Shinee i hear has a universe and hidden stuff. U can see some of it in Don't Call Me i think. Don't remember the storyline but Bang PD used to work for SM. He took that idea and used it for his agency too. Genius. Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army💟
Good reaction( 'Gasoline' ), ty. I am looking into Taemin, Shinee these days. And I know Key is in Shinee too. I have heard Gasoline a a few times. It's not bad. Love the fact that he had both genders dancing with him. I counted 6 looks. Loved the gold fit on him, the blue too. He was really in ur face in that. I wonder if he is a Star Track fan. He uses the Borg Cube and their spaceship design in his MVs. The dance practice was good. Hope u check it out. Yes, parts are their storyline. The burning of the box could mean he is breaking free from the box some put him in.
    Milinda Wilson said on 11/25/22
Everything you see and hear with "Gasoline" was all Key's brainchild. From his outfits to the backup dancers looks, to the set design and story concept, as well as the song lyrics, and the whole album, were designed by him. He created a whole professional powerpoint presentation to show the stylists and producers exactly what he envisioned for this entire album, and every aspect of it is all part of his design.
When people say, "there is no one or nothing out there like it," they are right. Key is 100% that artist. A legend on par with Taemin's legendary concepts and styles. No wonder they are both members of SHINee.
This was another song that Key worked with Kenzie on.
If you want to see exactly how involved Key was in creating this masterpiece, you should check out his 4 "Inside Gasoline ..." behind the scenes videos.
SHINee are always on another level and they are constantly outdoing themselves with every new project. It amazes me that even after 14 years SHINee can still continue to reinvent the Kpop industry with every new release, whether it's a group project or one of the member's solos, and yet they do it every time without fail.
You have to check out Key's "Gasoline" dance practice next, and a live performance of his B-side "Villain," which features Jeno from NCT-Dream, as well as the dance practice for "Villain," if you haven't already. Because he is a member of SHINee, Key's songs and performances are even better live. :D

Here is some interesting info for you regarding SHINee's "Lucifer":
    1) In 2010, this was the most difficult Kpop choreo because it was extremely synchronized and mixed dance genres.
    2) The dance practice for this song is what launched the now almost required dance practice trend. Yes, thank SHINee for all the DPs you enjoy...lol. Here is that DP: th-cam.com/video/ovztfpWPo5M/w-d-xo.html (Taemin is wearing the psychedelic, zebra-stripped shirt that messes with your eyes. The little **it!)
    3) This was the first song where Taemin was given more lines as his singing had improved w/help from Jonghyun & Onew. (He couldn't sing at debut in 2008 due to immature vocal cords. He had just had is 17th birthday the day before this song dropped.)
    4) Minho wrote the rap part for this song.
    5) On January 29, 2018, SHINee's "Lucifer" was featured on FOX's TV series, "Lucifer".
SHINee actually pioneered the trend of integrating more complex and extremely synchronized choreos while also really singing LIVE during performances. Prior to 2008, this was unheard of and most performances were done with lip-synching. In order to be able to sing in a stable manner while performing, they practiced singing while running together: th-cam.com/video/F5DutJG93cI/w-d-xo.html The other members cited Taemin as the one who continuously asked for more intricate choreos to their chagrin...lol. Taemin is also the one who moves around the most during their dancing.
Regarding "Gasoline" -- another HOT MOLTON HIT from our Kibum! He and Taemin are peas in a pod regarding extreme creativity, yet distinct in their solo music. Even Onew & Minho offered us something different with "Dice" and "Heart Break". SHINee have always been the pioneers who introduce new concepts/trends in music and the rest of the industry rushes to follow their lead. This just goes to show that with SHINee, SM will spare no expense and let the guys alone to do what they do best....MUSIC!
Key couldn't find an appropriate title song for this album so he popped his head into the studio while Kenzie was had a break with another artist and asked him to write a title song for him. After working with Key, "Gasoline" was born. At first, Lee Soo Man wasn't sure about it and thought the song might be too strong, but Key, in true sassy fashion (like all the SHINee brothers) stuck to his guns and now we have this masterpiece.
The genius part in all this though is that I think all of their solo videos are linked. If you think about Taemin's "Advice" talking about he will no longer listen to the one (collective) advice but do his own thing and the concept of being refined by fire (Taemin in "Criminal"..."Destroy me more" refrain), Onew rolling the "Dice" and changing his path while referencing the visuals in SHINee's "Married to the Music" and incorporating Taemin's "Criminal" chainsaw fetish, Key's space sci-fi theme, and Minho's penchant for golfing, and lastly Minho's sci-fi tech and doppleganger in "Heart Break", you can see a clear link through all of them. Plus, I think it all fits into the SM Universe story too.
