    $16,000 quartz with an exhibition back showing the battery, a Timex-competetive lumed dial, a proprietary rubber band, and a screechy movement? And only a 4-year waiting time?

    • @Nefville

      I just searched for this watch used and there are a number of examples starting at $49,000 going up to the better? examples going for a cool $60,000+. One is $66,629.00. That means our guy here just made a cool $33k to $50k - if he decides to sell it. I don't know what $16k gets you in the stock market after 4 years but my god I was not expecting it to be that much.

    • @theknightswatch

      Absolutely not going to be for everyone, and even I have trouble in finding value in many watches above the 10k price point but there is some cool stuff going on. And sometimes luxury is not about what component parts are worth.

  • @Nefville

    Its probably my favorite FPJ, its *definitely* my favorite case shape, the tortue, but that price... $16,000. You have (or had?) a Breguet Tradition, for $16,000 I'd be close to being able to afford that. Or for $16,000 I could get _several_ luxury watches. Maybe I'd just hold my horses and get my real grail, the new $24k Chopard 1860. So many choices. That being said the last time I looked for these used they were in the mid-30k's so I guess that helps. Congrats, I love it.
    Edit: OMG I just saw what these are going for on Chrono24. Best $16,000 you ever spent 🤣

    • @theknightswatch

      Agree this and the resonance are my favorite from the brand. It’s hard to justify it at this price but both fortunately and unfortunately, the fact that’s it’s worth more helps. I think for the most part my ceiling is 10k and even more realistically I like playing in the sub 5 and sub 1 k price point because that is where some of the interesting stuff is happening. The more you spend the more you pay for someone just making a watch with more handicaps of “making the finishing and quality better”

    Anyway, the attraction for me would be the lumed-printed dial which evokes thoughts of silhouettes against a window-backed wall clock, like you would see in some old-timey train stations.

  • @gcardinal

    Thank you for another highly entertaining review. The only thing that bugs me is the huge cutout at the 4 o'clock and why some extreme small parts of number 4 are still present there. If their know that there will be a cut out there, why print 4 in the first place? isnt it better to just leave it blank and do the cut? Or just oversize the cutout so it cuts everything that remain of 4. This approach of "cut what we have and we dont care what is left" is just killing me.

    • @theknightswatch

      I did forget to mention it but there were previous versions which basically had an almost invisible disk where at the right angle being contrasted by the rotor, the 4 would be filled completely. Was a real cool touch they got rid of at some point which is unfortunate. I do agree though you might as well not have the 4 but wearing it it doesn’t bother me much

    One of your most interesting reviews in my opinion because of your philosophical take at the end when you summed it up. The watch is just sublime and I hope you wear it in good health … oh and by the way. I predict a white rubber strap from them before the battery runs out

  • @dunderhay9169

    Another excellent review 👍. That is a fascinating watch, I can see why you like it and the size looks perfect on your wrist, the larger size must be enormous! I have only two real criticisms, first the strap, 18mm standard lugs would have looked fine and opened up the option of a high quality leather strap the watch is crying out for. Second, I think they should have added hour hand adjustment for travelling to avoid stopping the watch, at that price they could have done it.

    • @theknightswatch

      The hour hand adjustment would be a good point. Very functional but of course no idea how hard that would be to incorporate. The 16mm bothered me on paper but on the wrist it felt proportional, curious if 18 would feel too big or not. Either way you would need a more proprietary strap type to get it to fit anyway

  • @bobo-dz6eu

    Does Titalyt mean that the watch is black throughout? or is it just a surface coating like pvd? Thanks for the in depth review. I've noticed that I actually largely prefer quartz watches and the elegante and citizen 0100 are on my hitlist. Hopefully the hype for journe will be less crazy, in 2030....

    • @theknightswatch

      Ya it’s just a surface coating. Their proprietary treatment to the titanium, from what I’ve heard it holds up very well to normal wear and tear

  • @astorbeijer9424

    I love this watch. It's one of my two favorites from Journe, the other being the Chronmètre Bleu. Over the years, this watch has starting edging out the Bleu.
    My only gripe with this watch is the 30 meter water resistance. As you said, this is supposed to be a dressy sports watch. It should have 50 meters WR at a minimum, 100 meters preferably. 30 meters keeps it in the dress category whereas the case materials and rubber strap says sport.
    $16k for any Journe is still worth the money. He's more than a brand. He's one of the finest watchmakers if the 20th century. When he dies, his genius will die with him.

      The most overrated watchmaker in every respect! Mostly hype!

    • @theknightswatch

      I agree the water resistance should probably be 50m or more, I’m sure they could get there but I doubt many people use it in the water. It would undoubtedly bolster its sports watch idea much more with more water resistance.

    FPJ have the gall to sell a quartz watch at 16k! Is this the entry to get on the wait list. Sorry, but this just screams cash grab.

    • @theknightswatch

      Not an unfair point but I don’t think it’s purely a cash grab. The fact they don’t really advertise how many of them they make does make it sit a little more oddly. The full production of the elegante is almost half of the entire production of their mechanical pieces so it is likely something that helps keep the lights on.

    • @DataKitsune

      @@theknightswatch I still think cash grab. Half the production? but is that half in units or half in man hours. I'd assume a mechanical watch would require 20-30x the man hours in comparison to the quartz. Engraving a quartz movement vs crafting/assembling a movement containing hundreds of parts. Something tells me FP realized his company is hitting the limits of the number of mechanical watches they can physically manufacture, thus decides to eek out extra units via high mark-up low resource units. Gall, but if people want to pay it, to each their own.
