I taught Steve when he was in the 7th grade in Meridian, Mississippi. He was one of 30 precious, smart kids. I was so pleased to see him perform in Decatur GA near Atlanta about three years ago. As soon as he saw me approach his table after the concert, he began quoting a poem I had had his class memorize. He said every word of it. What a treat for a teacher.
I just hope he will come to perform in Georgia again soon, hopefully Decatur. I just heard this song for the first time in 40 years and rediscovered him yesterday.now I would love to see him sing!
My mom loved this song! I remember her dancing to it when she was young and so beautiful. One day I was driving, so sad and missing her because I lost her last July. I turned on the radio, and it was the beginning to this song, that I hadn't heard in many, many, years. I felt like it was mom, reaching out and saying, "honey, I'm still here!" She was the best mom, I miss her so much. She joined dad who died just over a year before her.
What a wonderful treasure of a memory. So glad you still see her in your mind back when she was physically alive and happy. But Heaven is something we can't even imagine. Our minds would not be able to comprehend the beauty, love, peace and happiness she knows now.
my wife and i thank you steve. i'm in love with you was our song and this was a close 2ed. i lost my wife tonight she was sick for a long time. so i've just been sitting here watching your videos and remembering the past 25 years we had. she was the best and i miss her.
It has been many years since you posted here. I had 23 precious years with my wife. Lost her 6 years ago. When i hear songs we would listen to... Our wedding dance and so many others, i start crying. Music is a way of holding our hearts. God bless you and yours.
I'm so sorry. Wish there was something I could say to help the hurt. . . . There isn't. As I am/ have been single most of my life, there have been plenty of envious moments of all the couples I pass on holidays, birthdays etc. But I don't envy your future missing her. Double edged sword. When there is tremendous love an equally painful suffering is felt when parted. 😔
Yeh, wow, this is about as well crafted song as you will find. Might not be your favorite but, man, it’s good. First time in 15+ years I heard and I wish it was not so late, now I’m loving it!
First time I ever heard this song, which was also the fjrst time I ever heard of Steve Forbert, was listening to a classic rock station out of Rockville MD. This was roughly 1993. First couple notes I heard, was blown away. Had to call the radio station and find out who it was. The DJ, I guess it was, told me that they were getting flooded with calls asking who it was. After the song, they went to commercial, then right after that the DJ, on the air, said about all the calls and he reinterated who the artist was and name of the song. I had to find and buy the CD it was on. Although some of the songs had to grow on me, eventually they all rocked, but Roneo's Tune most of all! Timeless song!
Plenty of bands and performers are in this group ....sustaining and building on that initial hit is what separates the countless one hit wonder bands and the ones who become super successful with continued hit music that resonates with the masses. Being able to do that in itself is a special talent.
“Let me smell the moon in your perfume”. Brilliant. Why can’t I think of words like that to say to my wife? I guess I’m still walking with my knuckles dragging, that’s why.
I Love this song it's been well over 30 years since I heard this until tonight I watched a movie Paint with Owen Wilson I had to hear it again Ive been playing over and over brings back such great memories we had the Greatest music in the 70's ❤❤❤❤❤
Every so often this song pops into my head. Then I search for this video and play it about 10 times. What great childhood memories this brings back. Some songs just make you want to sing along.
Once again a performance and hit I can say leads me to believe I was born to late into this world. 25 today and songs like this are what I jam to daily, old school cool here.
Such a special song for me. My first dog, a beautiful Golden Retriever named Romeo. Tho' he's gone since '86, he will always live on in my heart. I keep his ashes on my desk. When I go, he's coming with me.
I bought this album in 1980...at a bookstore when i was going to school at Park College...Must of played this ablum a 1000..thought i discovered Dylan....this guy is a talented singer/ songwriter....this album..his first is like nothing uv ever heard...i mean every song is a book of life...mads u dig deep on the music scene....thats something i cant forget about you. .
I had just graduated from high school when this superb song came out. That summer, I had the great teenage experience of spending all my time with a wonderful, smart and beautiful girl from a neighboring town. This song was always on our car's 8-track tape player. We went to different colleges in the end, but I remember her fondly now almost 45 years later, and with her I remember this song. Thanks, Steve Forbert, for the song and for allowing me to recreate a very special time.
Reading this brought a big smile to my 69 year old face. How true that memories don't leave like people do " Title of a song by the late Johhny Bristol.

I had the pleasure of being able to watch Steve Forbert perform as the opening act for the Beach Boys at the Nebraska State Fair back around 1995. I had to tell my wife several times who he was and I knew she'd figure it out when he played "Romeo's Tune. The crowd was very rude to him and heckled him, which I thought was very unfortunate. When he played "Romeo's Tune", which was about the second to last song in his set the crowd finally started to appreciate him. Personally, I think his songwriting is incredible and "Romeo's Tune" is no exception. The lyrics have a mysterious quality to them and...oh yeah...did I mention that he's a damned fine singer?
Same here. With all due respect to Steve, I don't think booking him as an opening act for the Beach Boys was such a great idea. It's sort of like having Michael Buble open Nickelback.
+Samuel Bethune that's art opening for bubble gum. i saw and met steve recently. a true gentlemen and a great artist. i'd NEVER pay for the beach boys. i'd listen to 'pet sounds' but that's about it.
+Samuel Bethune I agree Sam, and I hate rude audiences anyway. His 'It isn't gonna be like that' is an absolute classic...but fools can only be taken to fine music, you can't make them drink it in.
Sadly the heckling seems to happen often these days and it's so sad, not to mention disrespectful. Often these jerks are upfront and I can only imagine WHY, they are there, much less front row if they dislike the artists music so much? I watched "Loverboy" get verbally abused at the Cocoa Bch Pier some years back, by a handful of late 20's/early 30's drunken nobodies. If you don't like the music LEAVE. Sad that a few nobodies can ruin a great show for 100's of ppl.
I was 13 in 1979 and recorded this song, on a cassette, from the radio. I listened to it over and over until the tape was so raggedy that my cassette player ate the tape. I cried...... Heading over to Chris Norman and Suzi Quatro singing Stumblin In now. Happy Days to you all!
Steve played at Allegheny College in ‘78 or ‘79 and at the after-party I told him, absolutely sincere, that it was the best concert I’d ever been to. I just remember the look of surprise on his face. The memory of his humble reaction has stayed with me through the years.

This song has the perfect blend of chord progression, melody, and the sentimentality of the lyrics. It's hard not to look back on younger years and the magic of certain places and moments in time. Timeless.
Saw Stevie in 1979 at the Decade Lounge in Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Girlfriend heard of him, it was a great show. Talked to him afterwards, still memories way back in my head from concerts back then.
I was introduced to him by a friend in Meridian MS at a bar, he was different. Something he was on made him unable to carry on a conversation with me, but it didn't stop him from performing. I never forgot him.
I remember hearing this in the fall of 1979 on 8-track stereo whilst riding "shotgun" in my older brother's 1979 Z-28 as we were cruising up I-35 on a chilly night.
I bought recently Jack rabbit slim CD from Amazon. My old cassette didn't last that long. I like his music and VOICE, especially the slow ballads. Very special when you listen with your girl. It took me back about forty years.
BOY this has GOT to be one of the BADDEST songs in rock/n/roll history PERIOD . I've LOVED this tune since it came out, it's got to be my favorite song of all time.
There is no estimating how well "put together" this song is. It TRULY is timeless. Heard it one evening about a year or so ago on NPR. Someone covered it well. Wish I knew who it was, I'd like to hear it again. Nothing like the real thing though!
I don't remember the year, but my son does a lot of photography of bands and Steve Forbert was one. This was/is one of my very favorite songs of all time ... it's so happy. He opened for Edie Brickell and my son and I went backstage between performances and talked with Steve and jammed with him. He was so terrific. He had young twin boys (I think they were boys) and was so proud of them. We had so much fun. He is a wonderful performer and person! Love ya' Steve - still my favorite song!
This song gives me goosebumps, I fell in love with it when I was 6 in 1979/1980 and it definitely got lost in my memory vault till I stumbled upon it on TH-cam today and had an OMG moment as soon as I heard it and was I instantly transported back to 1979 ❤️
I play in a country music band.. and many of my friends are country fans. Keith Urban re-released this song.. and all of my friends thought it was his song. Maybe I'm showing my age.. but this tune makes me thing of days when I was just a little boy. Love it...
how fun is music when a nice guy with an underdog quality pulls off a great song. well done. the quintessential "rock n roll hero". this video went straight to my favorites and my ipod.
Steve seems like one of the least known and most under rated musicians I know of. I didn't grow up in the 60s or 70s but more people should know his name.
Always been one of my favorite 1 Hit Wonders! The first time I heard it playing, back in the day at out local record store I asked the salesclerk what album they were playing. I just had to buy it, still have it today in my record collection.
i taught Steve Forbert when he was a 7th grader at Northwest Jr. High in Meridian Mississippi in 1966-67. He was a smart, sweet child just like the 29 others in my English class. What a pleasure to see him when he came to Atlanta near where I now live around three years ago.
I saw him do this live in 1979. He was hailed as the new Bob Dylan, but he had no such ambition. He is a simple minstrel, and he knows it, and that is why he was not a casualty of the Seventies.
@@hansmoffett9758 yeah, I heard this song once on satellite, and I decided to write down what I could see of the title, and my brain thought it was “Romeo’s Theme”. Then, 6 months had passed and I decided to look up the song and boy it was a treat
I heard this on the radio earlier today, either at the Taco Bell in Daleville, Alabama, or I heard it at Ft. Rucker Lister Clinic, while waiting to get an MRI. This was the first time I had ever been able to even hear some of the lines and understand them. I haven't heard this song in decades. I've always loved this song and wondered who wrote it. I'v always wanted to hear it again, but didn't know the name of this song. The music reminds me a little bit of Dire Straits, "Walk of Life". I love that song too. This tune has been running through my head for over thirty years. There are not enough words to express just how glad, how happy I am to be able to listen to this song on demand, now. Thanks to whoever posted this video.
i so love this song ever since jack rabbit slim, i saw him when i wasa little girl in cleveland ohio many times and this was my so very fav tune for years, i used to have the hots for him, he was such a hottie , ah the beginnings of the 80's great times and so missed times in my life , rock on stevie

My God how the memories come rushing back, another excellent artist of the times, where'd they all go?
Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say everything's okay
Bring me southern kisses from your room
Meet me in the middle of the night
Let me hear you say everything's alright
Let me smell the moon in your perfume
Oh, Gods and years will rise and fall
And there's always something more
It's lost in talk, I waste my time
And it's all been said before
While further down behind the masquerade the tears are there
I don't ask for all that much I just want someone to care
That's right now
Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say everything's okay
Come on out beneath the shining sun
Meet me in the middle of the night
Let me hear you say everything's alright
Sneak on out beneath the stars and run
Oh yeah, oh yeah yeah, oh yeah
It's king and queen and we must go down now beyond the chandelier
Where I won't have to speak my mind and you won't have to hear
Shreds of news and afterthoughts and complicated scenes
We'll huddle down behind the light and fade like magazines
Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say everything's okay
Bring me southern kisses from your room
Hey hey, meet me in the middle of the night
Let me hear you say everything's alright
Let me smell the moon in your perfume
Oh now, meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say everything's okay
Let me see you smiling back at me

Great Piano playing, plus all the other Harmony, glad I found this nugget.
Beautiful beautiful tune...bravo...great lyrical tune poetry in motion!
Saw Stevie in 1979 at the Decade Lounge in Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Girlfriend heard of him, it was a great show. Talked to him afterwards, still memories way back in my head from concerts back then.
🇺🇸
A love this song! Listening to it on the radio when I was 12 years old back in 78! This song embraces the good memories of life back then!
I was introduced to him by a friend in Meridian MS at a bar, he was different. Something he was on made him unable to carry on a conversation with me, but it didn't stop him from performing. I never forgot him.
Reminiscing this brings tears to my eyes listening to the words for the first time 40 years
🇺🇸
One of the best songs ever..... his voice is even better live.....
I like the way he feels this while he sings. we need more music like this now!
Saw him live several times. Always had a different pick up band behind him. Went to to see him a year later and he was playing all country music
This is my pick me up song. It's such an amazing song, and he does it so perfectly. I truly love ❤ this song.
9th grade, 1979, this song blaring on the jukebox. Yes!
I remember hearing this in the fall of 1979 on 8-track stereo whilst riding "shotgun" in my older brother's 1979 Z-28 as we were cruising up I-35 on a chilly night.
He had a z car. And Forbert on track. What else did you need? Nothing.
Too true! Those were great times!
+recondoc65 1979?
Memories like those are the best.
You and many, many others too.
Ãlwayş loved this beautiful song, could listen forever, never gets old ~
I haven't heard this song in a long time and now I'm a little addicted to it.
I bought recently Jack rabbit slim CD from Amazon. My old cassette didn't last that long. I like his music and VOICE, especially the slow ballads. Very special when you listen with your girl. It took me back about forty years.
One of those songs that once heard, you wish you wrote it and never ever forget it. Can't think of anyone who'd sing it better.
🇺🇸
This song gives me goosebumps, I fell in love with it when I was 6 in 1979/1980 and it definitely got lost in my memory vault till I stumbled upon it on TH-cam today and had an OMG moment as soon as I heard it and was I instantly transported back to 1979 ❤️
I’ve always loved this, especially the piano riffs!
I play in a country music band.. and many of my friends are country fans. Keith Urban re-released this song.. and all of my friends thought it was his song. Maybe I'm showing my age.. but this tune makes me thing of days when I was just a little boy. Love it...
One of the best all time songs ever! I love you Steve Forbert.
Just wonderful. Perfection deliveried.
Great classic that isn't played enuff. Well it played on the juke box when I go out that's for sure. Love the late 70 s and early 80 s . Thanks steve
how fun is music when a nice guy with an underdog quality pulls off a great song. well done. the quintessential "rock n roll hero". this video went straight to my favorites and my ipod.
🇺🇸
This song peaked in February 1980.
Remember my brother brought this back from Canada when I was 16. Thanks Bro. Still a fan 30 years later!
Steve seems like one of the least known and most under rated musicians I know of. I didn't grow up in the 60s or 70s but more people should know his name.
Love this tune. Will be still listening in 2020 -
Call me an old-schooler, but songs like this take me back to my childhood.
That's one of my old times favorite and it never gets old
Always been one of my favorite 1 Hit Wonders! The first time I heard it playing, back in the day at out local record store I asked the salesclerk what album they were playing. I just had to buy it, still have it today in my record collection.
He's actually not a one hit wonder. This is just the song that made him famous.
Still a favourite after all these years. I can play it over and over. Thank you.
Wish i had a time machine to see this man live.
I can't believe how good this song is....and I lived through 1979. Magisterial!
i taught Steve Forbert when he was a 7th grader at Northwest Jr. High in Meridian Mississippi in 1966-67. He was a smart, sweet child just like the 29 others in my English class. What a pleasure to see him when he came to Atlanta near where I now live around three years ago.
Omg, what an honor to teach an incredible talent!
🇺🇸
One of my favorite tunes of all time.
Still listening in 2019... its 2021 and I'm still listening....its 2024 and its still in my play list
Ushering in 2022 with it in mind as I name my new puppy "Romeo"
A forgotten masterpiece..
wagbelt I'm not sure how forgotten it really is, Keith Urban covered it a few years back.
I saw him do this live in 1979. He was hailed as the new Bob Dylan, but he had no such ambition. He is a simple minstrel, and he knows it, and that is why he was not a casualty of the Seventies.
@@nicholasczapiewski I think he meant that it gets very little airplay. The only time I hear it is on satellite, and that's one in a great while.
@@hansmoffett9758 yeah, I heard this song once on satellite, and I decided to write down what I could see of the title, and my brain thought it was “Romeo’s Theme”. Then, 6 months had passed and I decided to look up the song and boy it was a treat
Forgotten?
One of my favorite songs when I was YOUNGer. Forgotten all about it thank God for the Internet ! I'm in Love All Over Again !💜
I heard this song at Walmart and even though I haven't heard since 7 I remembered it instantly. Summer of 81
This song is in my head way way back when I was young, and forgot about it for decades to come.
And then Facebook feature d this some days ago.
