TL is immensely appreciated by those who know. He may be overlooked if you ask general public about best bass players. Part of the reason may be his minimalistic approach i.e. playing with very short bursts, separate dives of sound, rarely playing long (melodic = memorable) bass passages, riffs (like _Don't Give Up_ ). It is less easy to realize how great he is than in case of many others who play stuff coming right to your ear. With TL you have to listen closely, otherwise you only tend to hear single notes which is but a fraction of the truth.
There’s also Double Fantasy. With Andy Newmark on drums, it’s a fabulous sounding record with some great songs on it. So sad it was the last thing John Lennon did, but wasn’t he blessed to have so many wonderful musicians in his band.
I saw that 2016 tour with Peter Gabriel & Sting, and it's still a source of great sadness to me that they've never released a live album or a concert film. It was such a great show. Meanwhile, I had the pleasure of saying hello to Tony and hearing him play bass and Stick with the BEAT tour a few days ago. Absolutely amazing show.
Same. I saw them in Camden and thought there needed to be a live album, but I also assume they wouldn't be able to because of multiple recorded companies.
I saw Beat on Monday night. They were amazing as was Tony. So much respect for a man who can play that well, let alone at aged 78. Unbelievable! My position over the years has not wavered, my 2 all-time favorite bassists two decades ago are still my #1 and #2 : Levin and Squire. #3 would i suppose be Claypool. But obviously, there are many great bassists out there. But despite being a fellow Canadian and i definitely have alot of respect for the man, Geddy would not be in my top 20. As a guitarist, i find him far too busy. Peace.
16yo me, in 1994, read about this in Bass Player Magazine at Waldenbooks at the mall. Always loved trying to memorize tabs so I didn't have to buy magazines, too, lol
I did something similar with guitar chords for songs I liked in Australia. Pre-internet. Magazines and song music books were expensive to buy as a young kid in the 1980s Much easier today to access music
I have practiced to do this with my fingers. I play drums also so I have a benefit due to the rythmic's, but i miss the Treble from the "Funk fingers!! But it's possible if you have strength which i have taking a lot of push ups on the fingers. Having trained Karate 🥋 for 50 years. But be careful with this!! Whole lotta love from Norwegian drum/bass player 😅❤
Catherine I really like your profile picture and if you let me, I would make such an amazing mural out of it! If you don’t mind one of your picture could be my inspiring muse for an art project i’m working on for a client. You will totally get paid for it as well as a bonus also get credits.
Rick you keep complaining about not having a higher percentage of your primary channel subscribers as subscribers here. It looks identical. You need to change your background here, the format and so on. At least put in an intro and outro that highlights this is RB2. Rename it RB2. Why not?
Yeah I thought this was the main channel until I saw your post. I guess a lot of people think the same and assume they've already subscribed to it which is why it isn't growing as much. Definitely need greater separation between the two channels
I feel like I learned a lot about Tony Levin when Bill Bruford used him as the example of a total, consummate professional in his autobiography.
Steve Howe thinks the same. He was playing with ABWH
Tony Levin is one of the most overlooked bassists ever. I personally don't think a bass has ever sounded better than on 'So'
He may be overlooked by the public, but not by us musicians! Nothing but respect for this dude!
Anthony 😊

Not overlooked by anyone who's a real bass player.
"So" is such a fantastic album, and the bass on "Big Time"....does it get any funkier than that? Just awesome to hear this story.
This dude is such a pro that he will do bizarre experimentation with funk fingers in front of huge crowds just for fun. What a cool guy.

I wish they would release a live album as well. I saw them play in Tahoe. Incredible concert!
Mike is that you??🤨
Had the opportunity to meet Tony when he and Pat Mastelato toured with the California Guitar Trio on the CGT+2 album. Sweet guy.
Tony is the man

Tony Levin is a world bass treasure
The bass as a hammered dulcimer... Love it!
He was great with Peter Gabriel at Arena in Verona!
Amazing! Thank you! 🍷
Decade after decade go and not a single grey hair upon his head.
Imagine having a member of King Crimson, not to mention all his other accolades, sitting in your home studio! 😂😂😂 Epic.
I'm envisioning a new social media trend because of this interview.
Guys like Tony give me hope that music life isn't over at 50.
HELL no, I'm in a blues band out here in SoCal. At 57 i'm the 'young whippersnapper' LOL. PLAY TIL YOU DIE
Saw the Ventures do the drum bass thing decades ago.
The ultimate cool musician.....😎
Rick is a national treasure; actually strike that. He's a treasure for the world....
Indeed, and I would expand that to he's a treasure to the entire Universe.
Everything everywhere all at once

I did the same!
Saw the thumbnail and, for a second, thought G. Gordon Liddy had come back to play bass. 🤪
Brian 😊

BOC did this in 1981 in concert during the bass solo
I’ve been trying to find somewhere I can buy funk fingers. They look like they’d be a great challenge & they sound great when Tony uses them.
Cool beans!
When interview with Les Claypool?
PRIMUS SUCKS!!!
@@Typical.Anomaly Indeed.
Billy Sheehan too?
🤘
Please Rick, please do a "what makes this song great" to "Marsh Mellow Field" by Kings X!
Plasti-dip can really do ANYTHING :)
This should not be considered to be so unusual. The bass is the stringed instrument equivalent of drums and rhythm as well as passing tones
Paul
Tony: “Peter what should I do with my hair?”
Peter: “Time to shave. Shave it off, it off” 🐑
Last second says 'treble all the way off', thats a big revelation as to why I never sounded close.
Wow, playing the bass with drum sticks.

Sonic Youth did that on their guitars, probably not as well.
😎✨

These are shorter clips taken from the longer interviews on the main channel.
@@brianrossiter2547then it just needs to be a playlist on main account maybe?
He's not complaining. It's a plea to subscribe.

It’s funny - I subscribe to this and not RB1, because I don’t need THAT much/frequent content. RB2 gives me the best of RB1 without oversaturation.
My trombone mutes are dipped in that tool dip so they don’t scratch the bell taking it in and out.
I have the funk fingers and they are very hard to play.
What song are they talking about?
Big Time
@@tombiby5892 Thank you! I have to agree with Tony - I like the sound of his part better than Peter's synth bass sound.
It's Peter's song,do what he wants
What not interview Bill Laswell. A legend.
He's very sick these days, unfortunately.
