      Being a non-Asian foreigner in Seoul is like having your own gravitational pull. Stopping in the street or a shop and talking to other random foreigners you pass by was a near daily occurrence.

    안녕하세요! 오늘은 조금 색다른 사투리 콘텐츠 영상인데요. 미국 사투리에 대해서도 궁금해하시는 분들이 많으셔서 제 친구 초대해서 같이 찍어봤습니다. 여러분 어떠셨나요? 차이점이 느껴지시나요? 미국에도 지역별로 다양한 사투리와 재밌는 표현이 많아요. 나중에도 또 소개해드릴게요 ^^ 케빈 나와주셔서 감사합니다!

    Today we go into the American Southern accent. Thanks for giving us a run down on it Kevin! You can definitely say Kevin has one of the stronger Southern accents in Korea. It's pretty cool too, it's almost like stuff you only hear in the movies. Enjoy guys!

    Yooo! I'm actually a linguist and a polyglot who also grew up in Texas, so this whole video was really interesting and enjoyable.
    Kevin, I think it's fascinating that you have a more standard American accent when trying to imitate a British accent because there is a theory that the Southern American accent is a slowed down British accent.
    For those of y'all that are learning other languages and are feeling discouraged about your accent, don't be. Learning a language is always difficult. While some people do manage to not have accents, there are still plenty that keep them. I've met plenty of people who are fluent in their target language and have never managed to get rid of their accent. It does not mean that they are any less fluent. Your accent does not invalidate all the progress that you have made. Keep doing what you're doing and don't feel down. Accents are something you shouldn't be ashamed of because it's a sign that you know more than one language. 👍

      This was so sweet of you to say! I actually have a bit of a southern accent, and I sometimes pronounce my Korean with a bit of a southern drawl. (I am at a semi- beginner level in Korean.) I also do this sometimes when I speak in French, as I took four years of french in high school.

      Yup, English is my second language and Korean is my first. I've been speaking English longer than Korean but I still have a slight accent that has been progressively (well over a decade) getting better. Used to be embarrassed of my accent so I didn't speak much which is what halted the progress. Now that I think about it, it was such a dumb thing to be embarrassed about... it's only natural that you'll have an accent in a foreign language. So Kevin if you're reading this, don't be. Just be confident and embrace it - that's the only way you'll improve.

    "Ain't is a misconjugation of is not"
    Not true. Ain't is a contraction of "am not" that, over the centuries, has expanded to be a negation of all forms of "be" (am not, is not, are not).

    • @slycordinator
      @slycordinator 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@desolategaming1970 Again, that's not true.
      It's a contraction of "am not". The fact that it's also taken on the usage of "is not" and "are not" doesn't make it a contraction of them.

      I've noticed a pattern from watching a lot of global panelists forum TV shows and internet videos of Americans who travel to other countries not knowing a lot of vocabulary words that can easily be found on TV shows. You can see some of this being pointed out in the Comments section of Dave's videos. I've heard "podunk" outside of Dixieland. In TV shows, the way it is worked into the scrip is often to mock southerners, but sometimes the TV show's scrip has the southerner admit he is from a podunk town, like Kevin does in Dave's video.
      In addition to missing knowledge of vocabulary, I often see people in Dave's situation correct Korean English-learners' pronunciation of English words when the Korean person pronounces it in a British way. (British vowels tend to be more consistent and easier to pronounce for Asians. Also, the British accent that makes things ending in "er" into purely a vowel sound is easier for most Asians, so some Asians may pronounce things the British way without meaning to.) Although, considering Koreans, they may be specifically trying to learn the standard American accent, and not want to sound British.

    • @Wei_Radula_Regiment
      @Wei_Radula_Regiment 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just remembered one specific instance of "podunk" being used in a very widely viewed piece of media! *Disney's Zootopia!* (The 34th highest-grossing film of all time.) Nick (the fox) says it when insulting Judy (the rabbit) the first time they argue.
