The Broken Beaver Part 6: Wood Chipper Repair

  • The Broken Beaver Part Six; A Vermeer 1800-A with a 110 HP John Deere, I Tech Motor W / Turbo, spinning a chipping drum a minimum of 2,000 RPM's and the shaft breaks and becomes three pieces! That would make your woody job go limp! This is part six to a series that fabricates a new rotating unit for the tree chipper, Un wrap, the blankets and getting the shaft back in the lathe, checking out the run out caused by all the welding and how to deal with it! Moving on and setting up the radius cutting with patterns, cut out on the PlasmaCAM, then mounting in the flat pattern support, using the tracer attachment.

Yes, form tooling and a lot of port polishing drums! Been there, thats why I showed the large radius tool before hand. The more I use, the new flat pattern holder and the PlasmaCAM to cut the shapes, I'm in heaven! ;{)---

That is definitely the name of that tune on the ol tracer, and the hand work on those radius also! This was so much better than the no QC or QC overlook from the factory they should be ashamed to send that out the door passing a sure failure on to the retail customer. Great work Keith! :o]

I beleave the part is used in some "tree-crunching-jig" of some kind - not just for use in the garden back home - what I mean is, there has to be SOLD much cut wood to pay for your time doing this nice job - I long to see the machine doing the cutting with this new well balanced shaft and flange - thumbs up and head down for your skills and experience !

They also have oldschool radiusing attachments that clamp on the topslide. It pivots a toolbit in an arc by means of a stout handle. They can be set up to do inside and outside radii.

I have had minor incidents over the years, judging major as harming the lathe itself. I have been in the same shop with a fly chuck key that stopped after it stuck into a 14 gage steel back board on the bench behind the lathe. and was running a lathe with my back to a lathe that was mistakenly started in top speed and the shaft grew and pulled loose from the center, whipping in the air like a wet noodle, making me dive for the floor! ;{)---

I would contact material suppliers and ask for Buyers guide, if no results go over there head and get a hold of the manufacture, they sell more materials if people have references on their materials. In the old days they would have publishing once or twice a year. EMJ is my first choice to try!{)---

Back in the late 60's when balancing a 265 or a 283 cubic inch chevy backyard style was balancing of the reciprocating parts on a set of wood chipper blades. I used the DI to check for vibration afterwards, I didn't have what's in your shop at that time, the attitude was the same.. Get Er Done and nothing breaks. (the old JM Wight Tech., Stamford Ct. grad with honorable shop teachers that showed and told how to do before osha) ( what's a osha? seawater?) got fish?) ;) Good stuff Kieth!

I was really looking for a taper attachment and was disappointed I was going to have to make one or hunt one down. Then I had nothing to do while waiting for customers to show up, I started to tear it down and refurbish all components removing gumminess and polished the spool valve that controls the flow with the stylist, replacing all O’rings and fluid, mounted it and started playing, didn’t take long to forget about looking for taper attachment! ;{)---

This shaft assembly beats whatever slopped out unit they threw together at the factory. Its a shame to see some of the manufacturing techniques utilized in todays production world.USA stuff has gone downhill,Im only 33 and i can see it when i study historical machine and production techniques..Iam a fabricator/welder for a living and I always go back to what Ive been tought from the old timers and books of yesteryear..Its a shame what some of these big corporations have done to big USA companies thats I've worked for...

Keith on the press at my buds I welded a 3/4 x 2 " wheel stud onto the side of the tip by the cyl. then you can lift shafts out with the Hyd cyl . as it lifts up his has a 3" tip pad though ; I did`nt see if you had one on yours , If your worried about losing internal applications make a collar that sits above the tip that bolts on ,the just use the nylon choker to lift it up , Geez some big milling I watched 6 vids tonight on this .+ it working that`s big BIG STUMP ,I live for this 30+yrs to

Keith, you mentioned harmonics. I once got an automobile rotor returned to me from the shop that resurfaced it and it had a herringbone crosshatch on the surface that contacts the pads. I had never seen anything like it and the shop owner said "Don't worry about that; it won't affect performance. After installing them first time I hit the brakes the whine sounded like a fire truck siren. I took them back to the shop and the next time I got them back they were smooth and shiny. Any idea what may have caused a crosshatch like that to be left on the surface of the rotor?

  • @erichope1103

Question : Would it be a good idea to send the whole thing off to a driveshaft guy to get it balaced with the cutters mounted. Heavy thingey at 2000 rpm...... You'r doing a great job on this shaft and it's a shame to have it off balance when running. Just a thought.

    • @KeithFenner

If the complete job was done in house, every shop that I have been part of, would have sent it out for balance. I do have to say standing next to it while running had no vibration at all. Thanks for the comment! ;{)------

Last 2 digits in SAE numbering is C by weight in 1/100's of a percent, not 1/10's. You've got it wrong. If that's what you're really thinking; look it up, please. So I guess the moral of the story is that we all make mistakes, especially when trying to make hours and hours worth of free helpful videos while doing a paying job, and we can all pick on minor errors to make people look bad, but I guess you wouldn't know that unless you had done as much to help people as Keith.
