  • An Orthodox Christian, or anyone who wants to pray, should say the Prayer of St Ephrem twice every weekday during Great Lent. It is best to pray it the same way at home as we do in church, with 4 prostrations and 12 bows. We demonstrate this prayer.
    The video is old and a bit grainy, but we get our point across. We make better videos now, but this video is our most popular ever with over 11,000 views on an older youtube Channel.

    “O Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, despondency, ambition, and idle talk; give me not.”
    “But rather a spirit of chastity, humble-mindedness, patience, and love, bestow upon me, Thy servant.”
    “Yea, O Lord and King: grant me to see mine own sins, and judge not my brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen.”

    Thank you, Father. I started these late enough in my life that making 'fluid' movements never has been my 'style'. I am leaving this comment because i am watching this with captions which often say 'frustrations' instead of 'prostrations'.
    A rather apt term for my efforts. Such a beautiful prayer.. THANK YOU, DEAR SAINT EPHRAIM..

      My words and Google transcribes them and most of the time they change pro strations into frustrations. This just happened, and I had to make a correction. Since I am a terrible proofreader occasionally that correction does not occur. The funny thing is that nothing is further from the truth. Prostrations are beautiful and they're not in any way frustrating

    I have struggled the last year trying to find my way back to Jesus. I grew up Protestant. My mother remarried and converted to Catholicism, as well as my siblings. I struggle with accepting the dogma of immaculate conception, as well as a couple of other areas. Recently, I have found myself increasingly interested in the Orthodox Church. I live in extremely rural Texas, the nearest Greek Orthodox Church is approximately 70 miles. I reached out to the priest and have scheduled a visit in the next couple of weeks. Whilst I’m excited to hopefully grow in my faith, I am nervous about how my wife will handle this as she grew up non-denominational Protestant and has become very disheartened and discouraged at the way politics has invested the churches in our small town.
    I can’t say why I have become so interested in the orthodoxy, but I want to do this right and hopefully encourage my wife and possibly discover the same enthusiasm as have I over the past year. Being in such an isolated area, I spend so much time reading and studying this independently that when I do discuss it, my excitement can be overwhelming especially to disinterested people.
    What would be the best way to bring my wife and daughter with me on this path? Attending services as a guest and trying to help them get comfortable, I suppose. I do not feel pressured to convert or to have my wife catch up with where I’m at, rather I feel like I need to slow down and grab my family by the hand and gently show them why this has become such an intriguing, rather important part of my life…

      How is it going for you know friend? I started my journey 5 months ago. The nearest church is 120 miles from our home, but thankfully it has a good tradition. We usually go once every 3 weeks and stay overnight to attend vespers as well the night before. My husband is curious and supportive. I studied a lot to get to this point. I was an atheist existential philosopher by education and analyst by trade. So naturally it took quite a bit for me to become Christian in 2010. Then when I retired early to a remote area I studied apologetics though an intense certification program. This led me to the unexpected conclusion that I simply wasn’t holy enough to talk about God to others. At the same time, I was finding that Protestantism was not helping my spiritually. Through Johnathan Pageau (by way of Jordan Peterson) I began to see a deeper way of looking g at things of God… a deeper more appropriate way than simply parsing and dividing scripture. This led me to EO. Of course, at first, I had to analyze that too (on account of my nature), but now I feel far less inclined to read or listen to arguments for EO. I just want to absorb the spiritual teaching that are beyond reason. This is what my soul has longed for unknowingly. Stacy

      Sunday evening (at Vespers, or at home), through Friday. Not Saturday or Sunday until the evening. These rules are for church. At home, we may pray as our spiritual father blesses. For instance, we do not prostrate in the church on Sunday, but I do, when I pray in the morning at home.

    Prayer of St. Ephraim Lord and despot of my life do not give me spirit of laziness, curiosity, lust of power*, and empty talk**, (give prostration) but spirit of wisdom, lowliness, patient endurance, and love give graciously me your servant. (give prostration) yes, Lord King, give me to perceive my faults and not to give judgment against my brother· for blessed are you into the age the ages. amen. (give prostration) o God, cleanse me a sinner. (12 times, each time making the sign of the cross then a deep bow, then say the entire prayer, and then give a prostration.)
    * φιλαρχίας (philarchias) LSJ definition:
    love of rule, lust of power, LXX 4 Ma. 2.15; efforts to gain power.
    ** αργολογίας (argoloias)
    from αργολογώ - hot air, empty talk;
    i.e., the chatter, the cunning verbiage, the condemnation, the slander, but also that which is neither beneficial nor harmful, but is neutral and useless and fruitless.
    Spiritual laziness, empty talk, and curiosity bring about the death of works, which gives birth to selfishness and the abominable need to see those around us as our debtors and servants.
    Κύριε και Δέσποτα της ζωής μου, πνεύμα αργίας, περιεργίας, φιλαρχίας, και αργολογίας μη μοι δως. Πνεύμα δε σωφροσύνης, ταπεινοφροσύνης, υπομονής, και αγάπης χάρισε μοι τω σω δούλω. Ναι Κύριε Βασιλεύ, δώρησαί μοι του οράν τα εμά πταίσματα, και μη κατακρίνειν τον αδελφόν μου· ότι ευλογητός ει εις τους αιώνας των αιώνων. Αμήν.
