Regard John the 22nd, The Catholics and the protestant were more or less in the eternal competition to one up each other during the early modern period. Given the evidence John 22nd didn't see any problem with alchemy under the proto-scientific method that is scholastic Theology which is specifically a very high church doctrine (given that God made the world therefore it must be study) Lutherans and high-church Anglicans practice scholastic Theology aswell but further divergence would seperate further with reformed and more literalist sects of Anglicanism which would birth out the Puritans ironically.
The irony is that if there was a way to mass produce gold (that didn’t involve platinum), the value of gold would plummet, rendering the entire endeavor fruitless.
Well you say that, but there are plenty of people who refuse to believe lab diamonds are the same as blood diamonds. And in fairness they’re not…they’re better
Gold is a useful material though, an excellent conductor and it doesn't corrode. If we had an infinite supply of it we could use it for a lot of purposes it's currently too expensive for.
Depends on how cheap or expensive the procedure was. I think it would still be useful though because of the conductive, non-allergenic and other properties of gold. Like with diamonds that are used in industry. Maybe it wouldn't be a precious metal but we could use it for so many other things.
@@hazenoki628 Thiiiiisss,I always hear the concept "gold would be worthless if there was a lot of it" as if the thing was just a rare metal for jewelry, gold has A LOT of uses...given the case, copper value would drop drastically

I saw Flamel at a grocery store in Paris yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
We HAVE actually been able to make gold. From lead. It's done in a particle accelerator and costs insanely large amounts of money to create tiny amounts of gold, BUT ALCHEMY IS REAL WE DID IT!!!! also, it's hard to critique the old alchemists when we have lab made diamonds, obviously it's not the same but it seems equally improbable unless you're a scientist

It varies, really. One Livonian general in the Swedish army was found to have deserted, and upon being called once again by Swedish authorities, he offered his alchemic skills as a way of indentured servancy. Roger Bacon dabbled in alchemy but he had a great deal of other areas to support him. Albertus Magnus seemingly just did alchemy as a wider range of his scholarly work, mostly translating older works.

History's most successful alchemist was probably Avedis Zildjian, who didn't manage to turn base metals into gold, but *did* turn them into a great material for making cymbals. And given that the Zildjian company is still the world's leading cymbal manufacturer after 400 years, it's... sort of the same result.
It's really really funny that the true story of Nicholas Flamel is probably "Guy made a lot of money through inheritance and (possibly) land speculation, and for some reason a lot of people decide he's some kind of miracle worker." What's even funnier is that this is also a decent summary of the last ten years of American politics.

Love your video's Kaz, they definitely helped me make my decision to study history. I'm in my second year now and still can't believe that I get to hold century old texts bc of that !
I read a book where Nicolas Flamel was a killer who had been stalking his wife through time and some journalist discovers the story. But, I’ve read several very good series where alchemy is at the core of the plot. A Discovery of Witches is the most recent. This was a great video. I know John Dee worked in Elizabeth I’s court and I think Isaac Newton was into Alchemy. It’s a fascinating topic for sure. Dr Sledge on the Esoterica channel has a wonderful series that explains what they actually believed and how they practiced as well as doing deep dives on ancient alchemical and hermetic texts. If you’ve never seen his channel, you might like it.
If viewers are interested in pursuing the academic side of studying Alchemy and other esoteric arts, may I point you to Dr. Justin Sledge's channel, Esoterica. Fascinating stuff, even if sometimes difficult to understand.
Clicked on this so fast! Used to explore the lore of alchemy a lot (thank you FMA 2003), so this was a nice refresher in many ways, and educational in many others! Regarding the Pope John XXII and his alchemy, it may be he was more against "false alchemy" and his decretal was mainly against the "false alchemy" he perceived. And he may have felt this way because of studying alchemy in his youth. Speculation based on light reading though.
The reason I like and, therefore, am subscribed to your channel is because of your efforts to provide the whole picture. You make it a point to go beyond the many similar others with their tunnel vision that educational enlightenment and, heck, even civilization, as we know it, began in Europe. Their personal bias, possibly from ignorant racist upbringing and adherence, tend to wall up their research within that wilful confinement. So, thank you, for your educations about the contributions of other country's and culture's on your subject matters. 💞 💗
As a practicing magician in the same western medieval tradition that brings us alchemy, I'm thrilled to see you tackling this subject with your usual care and thoughtfulness. Can't wait to dive into the full video!
LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a video about alchemy!! Big special interest of mine. Larry Principe wrote my favorite book on the subject, he’s one of the only researchers who tries to recreate old alchemical mixtures to understand what the heck they were actually doing back then. Great guy!
I'm a Greek Mythology buff, to say first. I adored the video you made about the Oracle of Delphi. I'd be extraordinarily interested in what you have to say about the air of the Trojan War and Heinrich Schliemann.
That whole bit about 'mercury' and 'silver' reminded me of the fact that almost nobody made bronze in the Bronze Age. Not modern bronze, anyway. They made lots of different copper alloys which they thought of as bronzes and called bronze but which now would not be called bronze.
Re the question at 18:00 on the text attributed to John XXII. European alchemy isn't my specific area of expertise, and I don't know about John XXII's bibliography, but I believe that John XXII's ban was more directed at fraudulent alchemy (i.e. promising that imitation gold etc. was the real thing), rather than the entire pursuit, so it wouldn't surprise me if he wrote something on alchemy.
I just wanted to say thank you for making informative and logical videos on these topics, you've helped me find a passion for history and reading again ❤️ you're a wonderful person Kaz !
Great video as per usual hun!!!! Just wanted to say that I got really excited when you mentioned Hermes Trismegistus and Hermeticism. Most sources on that stuff are very scholarly and not easy to understand so I wanted to ask if you’d ever consider making a video about Hermeticism. It’s fascinating as a medieval philosophy, and that’s not mentioning its modern day interpretations, and how it created The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which then created modern Tarot as we know it today! Anyway, I hope you consider it. However, as long as you’re making videos I’m happy :3
This will probably sound like a douchey comment but they look and sound like rich people mattresses. Some of us poorer folks gotta sleep on fiberglass. I wish my biggest worry in life was whether or not my mattress was fiberglass free 😂
Shout out to esoterica / Dr. Sledge! He specializes in the esoterica and even alchemized(?) himself a potion from an alchemist’s book (please don’t try it yourself though)
I love your videos on history and historical practices and this one in particular has given me a lot of inspiration for trying to make a magic system for a fantasy story I want to write
In some video games like World of Warcraft, Alchemy is a "profession" that players can choose to do on the side. Although it is possible to "transmute" metals with in-game alchemy, the profession is mainly focused on making potions and elixirs with herbs (and sometimes other ingredients). Baldur's Gate 3 has a similar system.
That bit about Paracelsus and shifting from Galenic medicine towards pharmaceutica is really interesting. I had in my head that doctors were still reading Galen in the 19th century, which doesn't rule out chemical pursuits of medicine as a parallel route of inquiry... I just have so many questions now.
i recommend The Secrets of Alchemy by Lawrence M. Princippe,, professor emeritus of chemistry at Stanford University. largely due to his work recreating experiments from 16th century texts obscured by coded language and lack of historical scientific literacy, elevated alchemy from mere protochemistry to a science in its own right, worthy of reconsideration. scholarly and thorough, with detailed footnotes and a deep respect for both the subject matter and historization
its pretty wild that gold can actually be lab synthesized, the process is just so expensive, *much* more expensive than the small amount it makes, and the gold is INCREDIBLY radioactive
"...known colloquially as Paracelsus, thank GAWWD" 😆 Like so many other historical curiosities, I had no interest in alchemy, and therefore had fallen for most of the popular misconceptions. Once again, thank you ✨😊✨
My main exposure to Nicholas Flamel was in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott. Fun little romp through historic characters who are all immortal, like John Dee, Billy the Kid, and Joan of Arc.
For anyone interested in the chemistry behind alchemical claims, there's a great book called "The Chemistry of Alchemy: From Dragon's Blood to Donkey Dung, How Chemistry Was Forged" that goes over some of the historical background and delves into what the alchemists were doing, chemically, and why the claims of making gold might seem to be plausible. It was really fascinating!
I'm forever grateful for my chemistry teacher who taught us a lot of this stuff (though I'd forgotten it after all these years and def learned some new stuff!) Makes me realize he really went above and beyond
Thank you for sharing about the hurricane relief fund! The donations are how most of us here (eastern tn) have been getting by. The devastation is unreal. Thank you so much! ♥️
Weirdly I've just been watching a lot of videos about alchemy from the fantastic channel Esoterica. This was really cool and well presented. Well done dispelling the myths around alchemy. It's a fascinating part of history.
i'm at a loss for words, this is an absolutely great piece of research, consistent and sequential as it should be. thank you for quoting and citing the sources as well, I'm most certainly going to have a wonderful few days
Wow you dropped this video at the perfect time for me! I just started writing a story about wizards for myself and was going to include alchemy-like elements to my story. Good video :3
To go super deep dive into all the history of Alchemy, definitely check out Dr. Justin Sledge over on Esoterica. He's definitely a major youtube authority on the subject!
The vibes based way of thinking about elements doesn't seem so odd to me when I think about our modern view and how we talk about the principles: group 1 metals like potassium are super reactive, because their outermost electron is an s-orbital electron, which is relatively easily lost, resulting in a positive ion with a full outer shell (because the atoms "want" a full outer shell). That's an oversimplification, especially the full outer shell bit, but it underscores that how we understand and represent reality can get wibbly wobbly, even when we do know better.
Hi Kaz! I just wanted to tell you that I really love your videos and that I actually started remembering how much I love history when I first started watching maybe a year ago. Your content actually influenced me to take the advanced history course in 11th grade (german 11th grade btw. you are legally obligated to be in school until 10th grade here) and I’m actually surprisingly good in this class!! So I just wanted to thank you for all the great content and wanted to let you know that your videos do impact people’s lives :)
I'm just glad to finally have an answer to the question that's been bothering me for so long; that being how the hell did alchemy go from trying to create immortality and turning lead into gold, to the more common pop-culture depiction of crushing plants together to make medicines and poisons
I find it interesting that in a way, some modern science is somewhat like alchemy... not by trying to create gold and silver, but by creating lab grown gemstones. I'm not sure if the tales of alchemy inspired scientists to figure out how to create rubies and diamonds in their labs, but it's a fun thought.

Thank you for another enlightening video, Kaz Trismegistus.
Was just binging your older videos so this came out at a perfect time for me!
Yaaayyyy. So glad you're doing alchemy. I've always been so intrigued by it.
As a practicing magician in the same western medieval tradition that brings us alchemy, I'm thrilled to see you tackling this subject with your usual care and thoughtfulness. Can't wait to dive into the full video!
…so you are a snake oil salesman?
@@tudoraragornofgreyscot8482no they’re not an evangelical Christian
@@scapeagoat2520LMAOOOO
@@scapeagoat2520 mormons are the ones obsessed with essential oils lol
@@harls99 How is alchemy any different from faith healing or giving a bunch of money to a church?
What I love is that we get the french term "bain-marie" from Miriam (Mary the Jewess). Shows how there is untold history in languages
LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a video about alchemy!! Big special interest of mine. Larry Principe wrote my favorite book on the subject, he’s one of the only researchers who tries to recreate old alchemical mixtures to understand what the heck they were actually doing back then. Great guy!
I hope you're also watching Dr. Sledge over at Estoterica then, he did a great interview with Dr. Principe.
@@ChipSuey207 omg really?? I must have missed that one! Thanks for the heads up!!
@@ChipSuey207Hey,I watch Esoterica! Cool.
About to start organizing my sewing kit to this banger
I'm a Greek Mythology buff, to say first. I adored the video you made about the Oracle of Delphi.
I'd be extraordinarily interested in what you have to say about the air of the Trojan War and Heinrich Schliemann.
That whole bit about 'mercury' and 'silver' reminded me of the fact that almost nobody made bronze in the Bronze Age. Not modern bronze, anyway. They made lots of different copper alloys which they thought of as bronzes and called bronze but which now would not be called bronze.
Re the question at 18:00 on the text attributed to John XXII. European alchemy isn't my specific area of expertise, and I don't know about John XXII's bibliography, but I believe that John XXII's ban was more directed at fraudulent alchemy (i.e. promising that imitation gold etc. was the real thing), rather than the entire pursuit, so it wouldn't surprise me if he wrote something on alchemy.
babe wake up kaz uploaded
As someone allergic to wool I think it’s very funny that birch calls their mattresses allergen free
My mom has a respiratory allergy to latex, so she's another non-Birch customer. They sound nice, otherwise? 🤷♀️
This will probably sound like a douchey comment but they look and sound like rich people mattresses. Some of us poorer folks gotta sleep on fiberglass. I wish my biggest worry in life was whether or not my mattress was fiberglass free 😂
Distracted by how rad that necklace is!
"...known colloquially as Paracelsus, thank GAWWD" 😆
Like so many other historical curiosities, I had no interest in alchemy, and therefore had fallen for most of the popular misconceptions. Once again, thank you ✨😊✨
Can we just get a round of applause for the props and background work Kaz always puts into their videos?
My main exposure to Nicholas Flamel was in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott. Fun little romp through historic characters who are all immortal, like John Dee, Billy the Kid, and Joan of Arc.
major win for the fullmetal alchemist fans in the audience (it's me i have loved the series for so long)
For anyone interested in the chemistry behind alchemical claims, there's a great book called "The Chemistry of Alchemy: From Dragon's Blood to Donkey Dung, How Chemistry Was Forged" that goes over some of the historical background and delves into what the alchemists were doing, chemically, and why the claims of making gold might seem to be plausible. It was really fascinating!
The way you said Harry P*tter killed me, the cursèd texts lmao
I'm forever grateful for my chemistry teacher who taught us a lot of this stuff (though I'd forgotten it after all these years and def learned some new stuff!)
Makes me realize he really went above and beyond
As both a(n ex-)HP fan and an FMA fan, this watch was elucidating on an life changing scale. Thank you so much 😂🙏

This is spooky. I just started reading Frankenstein and they mention these alchemists!
your inability to flop outfit-wise needs to be studied
Thank you for using your platform to help folks affected by the hurricanes.
ohhhhhhh so thats where FMA got the Elric's dads name!
I think we need a shirt that says "Curse you, Victorians!" with an image of a shaking fist.
i'm at a loss for words, this is an absolutely great piece of research, consistent and sequential as it should be. thank you for quoting and citing the sources as well, I'm most certainly going to have a wonderful few days
Wow you dropped this video at the perfect time for me! I just started writing a story about wizards for myself and was going to include alchemy-like elements to my story. Good video :3
kaz: ...pinpointing exactly where it came from is a difficult task due to the usual suspects...
me: ah, yes, the victorians
23:44 kaz: guess who we have to blame again??
me: THE VICTORIANS
To go super deep dive into all the history of Alchemy, definitely check out Dr. Justin Sledge over on Esoterica. He's definitely a major youtube authority on the subject!
Keep doing what you’re doing!!! You’re providing beautiful, intellectual and mejestical content that is SO important for people to learn. 🖤
Need to share this with my chemistry professor
I love learning about ancient astronomy and alchemy it’s such a vibe. Thank you 🌙
That is a really cool necklace!
despite the falsities of nicholas flamel, i have to admit As Above So Below is still one of the greatest horror movies ever to me
i for one like the intersex/Non binary Jesus theory. We should make that canon.
canonizing it right now as we speak
Jesus being intersex was the take I needed to hear today
The vibes based way of thinking about elements doesn't seem so odd to me when I think about our modern view and how we talk about the principles: group 1 metals like potassium are super reactive, because their outermost electron is an s-orbital electron, which is relatively easily lost, resulting in a positive ion with a full outer shell (because the atoms "want" a full outer shell). That's an oversimplification, especially the full outer shell bit, but it underscores that how we understand and represent reality can get wibbly wobbly, even when we do know better.
The books of recipes and tutorials just make me envision TH-cam alchemists. Can you imagine how that would go?
Just to prove how intertwined alchemy was with emerging "science" as we know it... Isaac Newton was into his alchemical texts and his occult!
19:29 Ah so that's where W.I.T.C.H got the idea for quintessence.
Man I love you, I've been listening to the Magnus protocol which is going full alchemy and this video is perfectly timed
0:26 Girl you caught me drinking coffee with that one! 😂😂😂
Not this dropping while I'm in my post fullmetal alchemist rewatch hyperfixation era omg❤❤
10:28 idk why i legit tought for a moment kaz was gonna say ''edward elric'' my brain is cooked
Me too! I was just thinking that 😂
I'm just glad to finally have an answer to the question that's been bothering me for so long; that being how the hell did alchemy go from trying to create immortality and turning lead into gold, to the more common pop-culture depiction of crushing plants together to make medicines and poisons
"Everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold"
I find it interesting that in a way, some modern science is somewhat like alchemy... not by trying to create gold and silver, but by creating lab grown gemstones. I'm not sure if the tales of alchemy inspired scientists to figure out how to create rubies and diamonds in their labs, but it's a fun thought.
there’s a lot of TH-camrs that march the outfit to the theme of the videos but yours are my favorite they always look great ❤
