What killed it for me is when the idiots (main characters) go to the local Moss Esley and speak, in public, in a bar, of the people they must contact. They give names out loud…Jesus, in real life that would have been the end of the rebellion right there.

When the audience is stupid, the writing can be stupid. And if you're shelling out money to see about 99% of anything released within the last 5 or so years, you're stupid. I can't even find a movie at home, in my recliner, with multiple streaming apps at my disposal. I'll surf for a half hour, not even finding a "maybe" candidate. Its like they've taken away all the good movies and switched them with idiotic clones. The theater is just a magnetized version of this. About 99% is unwatchable.
Yeah 100%. I'm a former criminal and we avoid using eachother birthname like the plague. Especially in public places and on the phone. Each and everyone of us had nicknames and aliases... Often several for different levels of "circle" around us. It's as common as using a burner phone. Not saying criminal is the same as rebel, but i'd expect actual rebels to be smart enough to use these precautions too unless they're very high profile.

I went to the cinema on a Friday after work back in 79,because Ide heard about this movie called Star Wars ,I stayed till 2:30 in the morning,just going out to get another ticket then straight back in for the next session, then did it again the next Friday ,fell asleep on the train going home ,woke up to find the train I was in had been put in a yard ,finally got home at 6 in the morning to my petrified mother who had called me in to the police as a missing person, ah yes that’s what Star Wars did to me
One day in 1977, I went to the theater to watch a movie, didn't know which I'd choose. Saw the publicity pics in the lobby for one, some sci fi thing with a guy standing near what I thought was an unusual monorail car. Thought "Why not?" Watched the film, walked back outside to see a line stretching into the parking lot. Got back in the queue and didn't even mind the wait. That is my introduction to the "Star Wars" story. Spent each night the next week watching that flick, then tapered off to once or twice a week. As cheesy as that reel of celluloid is, no other film has had that kind of effect on me.
The second you said, "In 1977 I was standing in line..." I knew what you were talking about. I had nearly the same experience. I was cut from the first showing and saw Empire of the Ants instead, but I stayed up for a Star Wars that night.
It's criminal to not mention how HEAVILY this movie was inspired by warhammer 40k. The robot literally says he's part of the "Mechanicus Militarium". The soldiers main gun looks identical to a bolter except scaled down. The general astetic of "The Empire" fits more with 40k than starwars and the plot of the royal family sounds like something ripped straight from the 40k wiki. To top it all off, the basic grunts look IDENTICAL to 40k guardsmen just with slightly different texture and color of the armor.
I haven't seen it, but watching this, the ship looks like they tried to ape the silhouette of an Imperium of Man ship, but with no hard edges, all curves.

Maybe if they'd have leaned into it more and gone more grim dark, it might have been halfway decent. Unfortunately, it's pretty damned generic once you get about halfway through the movie.
Well, you can look at it as a cationary tale. We live in some kind of "high tech" civilisation. But GMO do not work as advertised, hydroponics can not work at the scale we need, and we can not eat bitcoins... No grains, no food, no people...
Yeah it seemed odd that they expect us to get behind the idea that a galaxy spanning empire wants to feed its army w/the product produced from a single small village that farms exclusively through muscle w/out any advanced farming tech. How much food can they possibly make? If an army in that setting needs food they gonna need way more than that, and they are the official army so they probably have money to simply buy. The village is just way too insignificant to have the importance accorded to it that it apparently has. A galaxy spanning empire wouldn't send armies out without provisions or an established means to get needed provisions. Such an army would still need to resupply, but there'd be some sort of system in place to provide for this supply. If they just raid their own lands for food, if that's their system, this could result in oppression of farmers, sure, but it would be a trickle down effect, the army would just show up at a depot that sells food in the bulk quantities it needs and in the great variety it needs, and processed already, and buy or requisition it by legal right at which point the depot owners would pass the expense on down the line, and that's where the oppression would come from. They wouldn't go farm to farm manually collecting the unprocessed food product themselves. And this village makes grains or whatever, so they'd go through a lot of effort, harming their own empire in the process, harming future ongoing supplies, and they'd get a bunch of unprocessed grains as a result. And why does this moon with good soil have only one village making food on it. I didn't hate the movie. Had fun watching hte action scenes. Was worth the watch for free as a surprise offering through netflix. But stuff like the above was like a splinter in my mind as I watched. With more splinters to come as I progressed.
The reason the Rebels in Star Wars stood a chance is cause the Empire couldn't pin them down. The Rebellion kept moving. They had ships and unknown supporters all across the galaxy. If you want to protect a farming settlement from the evil empire, it helps if they dont have space ships with the ability to wipe that farming settlement off the face of the planet in about five seconds.
There was also The Force.. why exactly is this girl so powerful?! She’s just a nepo baby? This thing looks n sounds good but what a garbage story. These farmers with their weird Viking accents and anti tech pro harsh labor beliefs.. just so meh The droid looked cool but then ran away.. killed the one cool guy with swagger so another girlboss AND NB but clearly a chick character can be motivated?! An entity that needs a small farm resources isn't an empire, it's some kind of local medieval baron. So, the logic of "building the villain" is complete crap. Also genuine empire as you mentioned can't be taken down by a bunch of rag tag rebels. I.e. I can't believe in the logic of the fantasy world presented.

The main take away I get from so many recent Hollywood products is that the future they paint is bleak. Even when the characters they present as the 'good -guys- they/thems' prevail, the simulacrum of a world they've created is at best dull and gray, and populated with automatons in skin-suits who can't even manage to interact as actual human beings.
This is what you get when narcissists and/or sociopaths write stories. They already don't understand how normal people feel about that which is bad, so why would the understand a normal person's ideals and hope for the future?
As far as modern Hollywood is concerned, the future is just like now, except with more gizmos. Their 'future realism' is that there are enlightened characters who share their political views on race and gender, who are the protagonists, and everyone else, who are either misguided and just need the protagonists to enlighten them, or choose to be 'wrong', and are the antagonists. Star Trek Discovery and Picard are perfect examples of this, and compared to old Trek, might as well be set in completely different universes in terms of their settings.
Hollywood has a low opinion of humanity. Almost Every future they portray is dystopian. The excuse that "its more interesting" falls flat as there will always be dangerous places in a galaxy that is otherwise at peace, lead by people who are not idiots/corrupt. 10 Little Indians wasn't great because they were the last 10 people on the planet. The scenario wasn't created by an evil man because the British government was corrupt.

The one thing that really struck me. And thats saying a lot. Nemesis had literally just finished saying "revenge will destroy you, dont do it" and next scene, Kora is telling Titus to "focus on revenge" ...Did they even proof read the script???
Or perhaps she was trying to find a way to get Titus to do what she wanted. Nemesis gave them all a warning, but revenge is probably the only motivation Titus has for putting down the bottle right now. Maybe it will be something that comes back in part 2.
Nemisis and Kora don’t break the fourth wall. Every character has their own thought process and narrative. The only thing we know they have in common so far is a dislike for the powerful kingdom.
I think that just shows that the vast majority of people feel oppressed by the kingdom. The dude that found everyone to put the crew together, planned on selling them out. He specifically chose people who were dangerous and already fought against the kingdom. Convincing those specific people to join a resistance group shouldn’t have been that hard.

There’s no other substance or character to the story (thus far). The biggest issue I had was Tarak. Why did he have to wait for the protagonists to greet him for him to free himself? Did the beast arrive just before the protagonists got there? Id the beast was there all this time we have a plot hole and if it wasn’t we have a massive coincidence. Either way it is shoddy writing.

I found the opening pretty good, basically right up until the antagonist guy landed to talk to the farmers and that was when it all started going off the rails for me. The idea of this huge space-faring empire still needing to exploit basic resources like grain to survive, sounded interesting. It suggested that even food is somewhat scarce in the far reaches of the galaxy, even if this particular village isn't starving. But. There's a GIANT FUCKIN SPACEPORT CITY a few miles away from the village? The empire guys wouldn't just go there and raid that city for food immediately, why exactly? Why was it preferable for them to waste time hassling a little village of like a hundred medieval peasants for food? (and who don't even HAVE the food yet, they are literal months away from producing said food)
My thinking on that has to do with reoccurring grain. They’d get what they want from the farmer and maybe not the space port So long term over short I guess
I agree. I was interested up until then. It combined 2 of my passions; sci fi and horticulture. lol. And Sophie Boutella looked gorgeous… but she’s no action heroine. What is she, 5’5, 115lbs? A least cast a well built woman. I can see Elliot Page being cast as Superman next . It just got worse until I just had to switch it off around the time of that bar fight. I might have made about an hour before tapping out.
The simple fact that in one monologue she states she doesn't know if she could love or be loved because they beat love out of her as weakness only to then in the next monologue state that at the academy they were told to find a lover for those moment when abstract conquest didn't bind them. I was like, man, they did zero effort on the world building for this.

This is the curse of all modern filmmaking - dragging everything out way too long. The next director who comes along that knows how to tell a compelling story in 80 minutes + credits is going to be a rock star.
Slow motion should be a last resort used sparingly like minimal slowdown for brief periods and to enhance the overall composition. Where it does work: as the culmination of a series of increasingly fast cuts in a boxing match, one slow motion shot of the punch knocking someone senseless, not very slow, only to make something highly significant just long enough to see that would otherwise last a fraction of a second. Where it doesn't work: just cutting to an extreme slow mo shot of someone walking so they go from walking slowly to barely moving at all and it just hold on it showing off all the rich detail but, what is important? What is happening here that I need to focus on. It just seems like it's showing off what a high speed camera they have.
@@Treblaine What you're seeing is the latest generation of filmmakers who saw "The Matrix" as teenagers and thought "yeah, bullet time is cool, let's do more of that". All flash and visuals, no understanding of story or narrative structure because they grew up on TV and movies instead of reading novels and short stories.
I'm normally pretty easy going with sci fi as i find the worldbuilding as interesting as the actual plot but it was just all over the place. I still don't understand the world. You have a warhammer style empire, but we learned next to nothing about it. There's a viking farming village for some reason which has orgies in the hopes that it convinces the gods to make their plants grow, since they've decided the only modern technology they're going to use are automatic doors, and that's an overnight hike from a western style town with a space port and a load of aliens which where never explained or expanded on so fuck knows if they're part of the empire, have civilisations outside the empire or fought the empire, and there's an Irish guy. There was a cyber punk city where Asian people use swords for honor because we've not moved on from that cliche, and spider women who apparently used to own the planet and so kidnap children, no need to expand on that. A roman colleseum, don't know what the fuck that was about, but i expected to see Russell Crowe wandering around in the background and then at some point conan the barbarian went to an American ranch at hogwarts to train a hippogriff using a slow motion spell or something, I think I zoned out at that part.
You know whats also weird? The soldier that tried to help the farm girl never shows up again even though he probably should have become part of the rebel team giving he fought back against them
He probably will make a comeback in the next episode with the farm girl. They didn't really give any motive why that soldier decided to betray his comrades like that to begin with.

Exactly! The way they clearly set him up to be one of the rebel members and then just dropping him from the movie. Same as the robot. He shows up at the beginning, shoots a guy, then disappears until the literal very end of the movie where it acts like he was some major character.
Exactly! For a moment I thought I had a micro-stroke when next scene shows Sofia Boutella's character with the farm guy looking for rebels at the cantina. I was like, "where's the soldier guy?". Isn't he a traitor at this point? Shouldn't he be on the journey with them? Why leave the robot behind as well? And the worst part is, if we moved some characters around the complete lack of story wouldn't really change that much.
I watched this with my mom, who stealthily and brilliantly dropped quotes from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Bladerunner, and Dune into scenes where they actually fit perfectly. When your elderly mother can do that, you KNOW the film is derivative.😂

Zack Snyder has never heard the old filmmaking adage, "show, don't tell," apparently. So much exposition! Exposition probably eats up more screen time than the slow-mo, which is saying something in a Snyder film.
He’s desperate for a cinematic universe of his own.. so much so he’s greenlighted a bunch of spin-offs that are probably gonna get cancelled like his “Army of The Dead universe” which is apparently set in THIS universe 🤦🏽♂️
He actually did show and didn't tell a lot in his DC trilogy, but y'all complained about it because you are too dumb to pay attention to what's going on on the screen, so now you hate him because he's gone the total opposite of that.
For real… I felt like so much of this movie was contrived scenes where the entire interaction between two characters is one “telling” the other some worldbuilding through flashback lmao. And it kept happening over and over.
I laughed so much at the end. This bunch of "heroes" all stood together after the final battle. I was like, who the hell are any of these? We haven't even gotten to know any of them and they did absolutely nothing in the fighting 🤣😂
I agree, it was baffling. They lost possibly the most useful member of the team taking down a small drop ship and acted like they had struck a huge blow to a galactic empire.
I've always thought Snyder was one of the most overrated filmmakers in the past 20 years. Sure I enjoyed 300, and The Watchmen, and I don't get the hate for Man of Steel, but most of his stuff has been terribly mediocre. Even the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League was crap imo
It's the marvel effect. Everyone is trying to recreate avengers endgame completely missing the fact that it took 10 years of movies to get there. Also missing the fact that marvel movies were the cinematic equivalent of a theme park but who cares about our art we got into this business for the cash.

I couldn't get through it. My dad and I gave it a try, but I had a sinking feeling almost immediately watching Kora dramatically dragging her fingers through the earth and smelling it while Farmboy stares awestruck at her. My eyes rolled back in my head and almost got stuck there. By the time Sword woman was fighting Spider Lady, we were just... why are they there? Did we doze off and miss a plot point? We might have. But finally we just gave it up and went back to re-watching Stargate Atlantis.

That was the feeling I was left with as well. The pacing is terrible. The editing literally made it feel like I fell asleep and woke up later, multiple times.
Funny thing is I went into this blind and had no idea who directed this. And within 10min I knew exactly who after these dumb unnecessary slow mo shots kept popping up lol

It was like they made it to be that and thought they'd magically fill in some garbage plot at the end but ended up doing nothing at all and pretending it's all some ancient alien race with zero plot development or payoff.
I suspect that movies today are being designed, not written. The director comes up with a list of fantastical shots he wants to bring to the screen and then tries to connect them all into a story. The result is dispassionate and disconnected, with no regard to the actual characters which are just vehicles to get us to the next cool shot. AI won't have to struggle hard to replace writers if this is the new trend in Hollywood.
I don't know if I will apply that to all movies, but that is 100% pure Snyder. A list of "moments" that he thinks will be cool on film and a shabby shell of a movie draped around them.
I watched this twice (once on my own and once with my sisters)...I still know nothing about who the warriors were or why they were even hired. How can a movie have so little happen, yet feel so long?

Seven Samurai worked because the heart of that movie is the character development--but that all happens in the *preparation of the defense* not in the gathering of the players. There's a reason why Kurosawa only spends ... what, 30m? ... on the setup; all that's needed is to give us the basic character sketch. The bulk of the movie is watching our players work with each other and the villagers, and seeing how they *grow and change* over that experience. The fight at the end isn't really the *climax,* it's the *denouement* where we see how our players have changed in relation to themselves, each other, and the villagers. Snyder stretches the gathering of the players, but then *fails to use that time* to do any of this work--so when Generic Rebel bites it, the *only* person who cares is Discount Furiosa--and the *only reason we know this* is because *she straight-up tells us in her first line.* Also, the reason the *plot* of Seven Samurai even works is because the antagonist *is a bandit* and bandits don't have a *bench.* You beat them once and they're gone. Here, *it's an interplanetary empire.* How, exactly, is this supposed to play out? "My liege, they have destroyed our squadron." "Fine, send the fleet." Yes yes, spark that lights the fire and all that, but *we aren't shown that these conditions even exist.* Generic Rebel's sister actually tells us they *don't* exist, because they don't have sufficient force to take on the *squadron* much less the *fleet.* So ... yeah, that pretty much made me laugh out loud.
@@Panz82 He's making the comparison because the plot is very similar to Seven Samurai. It's a basic story that gets retold every now and again, with varying degrees of success. (See Magnificent Seven, Battle Beyond the Stars, The Seven Magnificent Galdiators, etc, etc)
I think the main character annoyed me the most partly because I LOVE roleplaying and writing those edgy ass characters with sad/violent backstories. The whole fun of them is the mystery, and strained interactions with others gradually giving way to real bonds and softer moments as they learn to open up. Cora (kora? idk how it's meant to be spelled) just kind of... dumps her horrific past on Farmer Boy for no reason??? "i need you to know who i am" is what she says, but WHY? the mission would not be changed. his motivation has nothing to do with her, and whilst it's useful for the AUDIENCE to know in order to understand her own motivation. if you need such a lazy exposition scene to get across important information about your main character to the viewer, then maybe it's time to rewrite a few things
There are 2 reasons that completely sink the ship: 1. The unique characters, we spend a hour recruiting, dont affect the plot at all. And its not even fun hanging around with them. 2. The plot - like what are a few maybe even hundreds of soldiers going to do, when the enemy has a Dreadnought they can use to blast them back to the stone age? As an extension - is the empire even evil? They conquered a few planets like ok. The Admiral kills two men who lie to him and nukes a planet which gave ressources/shelter to a terrorist organization - lying to authorities and aiding and abetting is crime here too. Exsessive yes - evil not necissarily
There’s a reason why great actresses like Emily Blunt refuse to look at scripts that have “strong, independent badass woman” in it. She said she knows that characters will be utterly boring and she’ll have to be stoic throughout the entire movie and not show any emotion. Dear Hollywood: get a clue already! It’s starting to get embarrassing.
Honestly, I didn't mind Sofia's character at all, she was "strong, independent badass woman", but she wasn't stupidly OP like what they did with Rey in Star Wars, where basically within 2 weeks since discovering the Force she was the most powerful jedi that ever lived. Or Captain Marvel. Kora was raised as a soldier her entire life. However the movie is flawed with weak worldbuilding, weak or nonexistent interactions between the characters, sometimes strikingly cheap CGI, and weak action with ridiculously overused slow-motion that kills every fight.

My brother (who is in his third year of film school) started watching this movie on a whim and I made the regrettable decision to join him. If I hadn't he would have quite watching after the 15 minute mark. We ended up watching both movies pausing regularly to use our cinematography knowledge to pick apart everything that was bad about it. At the end of the first movie, my brother said the sobering line that really cut to the heart of why we hated these two movies and Zack Snyder: "Why did I bother going to film school and work myself half to death when this is what passes for a movie these days?" The depth to which Zack Snyder plumbs the possibilities of lazy and incompetent cinematography is absolutely incredible.
It took me 7 hours to watch this movie because i had to watch it in intervals to keep my eyes from melting and brain exploding. I really went into this with hopes of something good. This made Jupiter Ascending feel like and academy award winning space opera!

The thing that gets me is the bewildering timescale. The king and Princess apparently ruled in ancient times, such a long time ago that religions and mythology have built up about them - but it's about 5 years. I have socks older than that, and they haven't developed a religion of non-violence against other socks.
What a sad time it is for film. I get more enjoyment from watching The Critical Drinker and Pitch Meetings shit on the newest movies than I would if I actually watched them. Make Film Making Great Again!

I just watched this movie with my brothers and was constantly asking 'why' during the entire thing. This is the mindset of this village a few days' ride away form a neutral spaceport: "Evil guys came by to ask for our supplies which we don't have enough of because we sold them to the rebels, we don't line up our lies (despite being in the same room when the first lie was said) and things go tits up so our leader is executed. They say they'll return to rob and kill us in a few months and leave a band of evil mooks who wanted to assault little girls behind but our resident STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER girlbossed these bad guys into a grave. Should we leave? Nah, it'll be fine. If we work hard we can give them our stuff they will like us enough to not just not murder us after we fulfilled our purpose of letting them resupply, they will also probably leave us enough to survive the winter!" And then the protagonist, instead of leaving to let these morons win a Darwin award like she planned, decides to go recruit the rebel army and a general to save them with, even though they end up not being needed because the final battle takes place somewhere unrelated. Also, why was this little village on a planet on the ass-end of no-where populated with people that spoke in a mix of heavy accents that were, as far as I could tell, from Scandinavian countries, several parts of Great Britain and one obviously Dutch guy?
Given the fact that a 20-minute episode of Teen Titans could endear me to a group of new characters, I find it even more irritating that Rebel Moon failed to do so in 130 minutes.
Roger Corman literally made the same movie, called ''Battle Beyond The Stars'', back in 1980 and it has better characters, writing, world building, is more fun & even has Sybil Danning as a sexy Space Valkyrie. And Roger Corman managed to produce this movie with a fraction of the budget & the technology that Snyder had available!
If I had a penny for every original scene in Rebel Moon, I'd be broke. I could've spent those 134 minutes watching paint dry and it would've been more entertaining.
This is an odd comparison because even if every scene were original, you would still be broke after getting only like 50 pennies. I think it'd be better to just end with "I'd have zero pennies."
At least while watching paint dry, you get so bored your brain starts making stuff up to entertain yourself. Maybe it could be a half-decent movie script, lol.
And Zack was supposed to be a master in "show, don't tell", as he showed us in the intros of Watchmen and Sucker Punch.... As soon as i saw that 2 minute narration, with just ships flying in the background, i knew the movie wasn't gonna be good.
It would’ve been far more interesting to follow the young empire kid who protects the little blonde princess and the robot who malfunctions that was the intriguing plot line to go with
Um. Excuse me? Little princesses don't need protecting. They DO the protecting, using their strong independent woman powers and ability to do everything because the plot needs them to.
Agreed! I thought it was gonna follow them sometime during the movie because that was SOOOOOOOO much more interesting than Kora gathering some friends. Like I liked the friends, but the robot, the young guy, and the girl was literally wasted potential!

I'd say the best part was just the 5 seconds when that robot kills the dude having the weapon casually in his hands and (apparently) not even aiming...that's the only part I "save" about this movie... :DDDD
This whole movie remided me of that rick and morty episode where they keep getting more people for a heist. The whole time they went to meet or hire someone all i could think was: "You son of a bitch im in"
I watched this with my family, my mom fell asleep and my dad and I were making fun of it the entire time. I think one of the biggest reasons it sucked was that nothing in the movie happened to make us care about the characters outside of the main character needing them. It has been said before in the comments but it tries so hard to be Warhammer 40k. Also my favorite character is Noble because his actor feels like a Walmart Cillian Murphy, still really liked him and his performance though the guy has great screen presence and charisma
It wasn't terrible just tired of seeing a tiny woman throwing around men like it's nothing. I'm 5 1, 95 pounds . My fiance is 5 11, 185 pounds, he's a construction worker that lifts weights 3-4 days a week. Now imagine me being able to save him in a physical altercation and doing all the hard physical labor while he stands around and watches. It's silly.

5:26 The guy in the background, crouched down, literally WAITS for the protagonist to dispatch the enemy in front of her, THEN moves in only when she starts turning her gun on him instead of jumping her immediately and getting a drop on her. Great choreography, Zach! Way to make your strong, female lead seem so much more capable than she really is. 🤦♂ Thanks for biting the bullet for us, Drinker. Next time I'm in the mother land (Scotland) again, I'm buying! 🍻
Last time I went drinking with the Drinker, I woke with a a fat stripper barely breathing, a missing kidney and my whole life savings gone. So I can definitely recommend doing it.

Ed Skrein as Noble was the best part. Have him do the same performance as an inquisitor in the 40k project. Him bludgeoning the alien king to death, then calling down exterminatus whilst on planet was a cool scene.
Noble with his Bone staff was the best, spent the whole movie sending people to the Bone Zone. One of the few things I could enjoy in this drab set piece collage.
He'd be wonderful doing the same role in 40k but the problem is that Rebel Moon's Motherworld Imperium was so derivative of the Astra Militarum you'd basically be seeing the same character.
Yeh I did get to thinking GW might be sueing their ass as well as George Lucas. They are gonna carve this up in court like a Christmas Turkey. When the C3PO droid said something about mechanicus I had a wee face palm moment.

I lost interest in the movie in the first twenty minutes. Big bad spaceship with polite but evil leader politely demands an isolated farming community give him everything they have and then murders everyone for daring to object and I was like "Yep, seen this movie before. I'm gonna go solve puzzles and argue philosophy with robots in Talos Principle 2 now, thanks."

Idk, The movie certainly wasn't as bad as bad as a Disney movie. If you have nothing better to watch it won't be a waste of time. if you watched a lot of movies, you'll know everything that is going to happen before it happens though.
I found the ending the most hilarious part. When that ed bloke roars as he is ressurected. As if it's a nail biting terrifying moment...he literally sucker punched and old man with a bone and beat him to death beat an old squid man to death and the only conflict he had he got his arse handed to him. why just why
Why even bring him back. At the ending they should have introduced a new more threatening villian. Not just revive the general we just watched take a beat down, fall 2,000 ft, have his brain and body still intact
I'm glad you mentioned the slo-mo overuse. It started off funny but then became agonising to watch. I fell like the film could be half an hour shorter without the slo-mo.
They really went hard on the tell don't show version of the Magnificent Seven in space. It felt like something that should have been a season crammed together into a frankenmovie. The characters don't have character and do things so the movie can happen, instead of having reasons to work together. This would have worked a lot better as a getting the gang back together or basing gathering a group based on prior relationships, if they wanted to minimal character interaction because it got in the way of the special effects. Without relationships as the basis of joining, these characters would have told their "who the hell are you" recruiter to sod off. If they wanted a believable engagement of a starship captain scruffy nerfherder they should have had the main character save him from a perilous situation where he had to leave the planet anyways, had him have a previous relationship with her, owe her or the farm manager a huge debt, or have the cash to pay him (like a squirreled away buried treasure salvaged from the crash for just such emergencies after joining the Space Amish). It's just poor writing.
Not to be pedantic, but t's seven samurai in space, basically a meta reference to how star wars is just hidden forest in space (both films are directed by Akira Kurosawa)

I made through about half of this movie until I gave up and thought to myself ‘I wonder what the Drinker thought about this?’. I have say you magnificent bastard, you bloody nailed it mate!
You nailed it on every aspect of this train wreck of a movie. I watched the whole thing even when there were plenty of moments where I asked myself, "When will they start telling a story?" Character development is integral to any story, and this film had little to none of that for any of the characters including the "main" character. It was just a series of setups from hey, the bad guys show up and threaten simple people. Time to gather up a rag tag team of defenders. Enter big, loud and noisy combat sequences. By the end of the movie, the only feeling I had was that of being insulted by the self-indulgence of a lazy filmmaker with lots of money in his pockets.
It's almost like a knock-off version of June and Star wars combined into a cheap flimsy imitation that wouldn't last 5 minutes compared to the real product. There no blood part was when it lost me and didn't get me back too

I was interested in this movie when I first saw the title. I mistook it for an adaptation of Robert Heinlein's 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'. I'd love to see someone do that story. A rebellious penal colony on Earth's moon sounds pretty interesting to me.

Another Female Character without any flaws or struggle story what they presented as her backstory was essentially parents die but you are great at everything from birth. Even at the presented height of her ability she had no weakness, no need to rely on her group members. No over confidence or self doubt. Just "Badass bitch, ima slay" was the only narrative. Missing one all important aspect of good character writing, flaws. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy and say Quill, was that he was very broken as a character but the group each with their own unique ability made up for the deficiencies he had, it made him an endearing and relatable. But there is zero attempt at this, in this film. Much like every film produced in the last 5 years. The physical strength she possessed in melee was absurd given her frame is tiny and I was left questioning how somebody with no implants or obvious upper body weight can put tall physically built male soldiers onto the ground. I really tried to identify with her and I love female protagonists in other films where they understand there are different strengths to brute force and they work around that with technique, dexterity and agility. But this was just ridiculous, the whole performance screamed "bulls**t". If we have to go down the world where all protagonists *have* to now be female, or diverse. Can you for the love of god, atleast write a decent character story arc. One where they have flaws and are not just born omnipotent.

Kinda also like Heroes... they cancelled it after 4 seasons... but then gave the guy a chance to "do something different" and came out with Heroes Reborn and it was exactly like the original series. He didn't fix anything. He paced it exactly the same. Wrote it exactly the same. And I was thinking to myself... MAN... you had a second chance! How often do you get that in TV? Especially with science fiction!!! You blew it. You'll never get a season 2... and... he didn't... It's almost like writers don't know how to learn...
Great aesthetics and some really cool character designs, but it desperately needed to derail and have some chaotic fun. Instead it just hopped from A to B to C giving each new character their allocated time slot before doing nothing with it.
This comment makes the most sense out of all the above ones. The fast jumps are the reason the movie is boring, we don't have time with the characters for a soul to form. I think the movie should have more runtime distributing time for proper character depth. But after watching the first trailer again, I have a feeling maybe the 2nd movie has the major portion of this series. Because there are character backstories in the first trailer but none made it into this film.
I feel this movie had so much potential. I was so ready to get invested.. I can't care if it's a tired idea or knock off, it just felt like it was teeming with potential. This movie I just never got going, like never truly got its stride.

Some artists called "Sucker Punch" "Concept Art: The Movie" which was a very apt description. I'm still stunned that Snyder got to keep making movies after that horrific turd.
As a huge dune fan and a Denis Villeneuve fan I had high hopes for the new movies, the first is very good but I feel that it still didn't quite do the book enough credit. No doubt due to time limits etc he did the best he could with the time available but there's just not enough depth to the various factions. For example the Bene Gesserit are almost as capable as the Kwisatz Haderach but none of that came across in the first film at all. Hoping for more in parts 2 and 3 with all I have. Would have preferred a Game of Thrones type of TV series over several seasons than a couple of 2 hour films cramming it all in.

I was absolutely Blown Away, by the reviews that people gave on Google. It seemed like it was nothing but five stars and four stars over and over. There were a few dissenters who pointed out exactly what was wrong just as you did, but they were the exception. This is what makes the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and even IMDb very suspicious. It would be nice to have an unbiased and honest place to go for reviews. I think that's why everyone values the reviews you give, because they definitely seem honest. And I hope you never lose your integrity because someone pulls up with a dump truck full of cash.
Truth is really hard to find these days. It's quite irritating. And it's not just stupid Google's fault. There's lots of people in companies flooding reviews and information sites with whatever they want to help sell whatever they are selling.
@@CalvinHikes Not just people in companies but actual companies that do nothing but post fake reviews and leave false impressions. Advertising has gotten very blatant and clumsy in it's methods. I think it's easy to spot when there are reviews coming from brand new accounts using the same language or phrases and even full posts that are copies.

I feel bad for Sofia. Like I kinda like that Hollywood is starting to cast dancers, stunt people, athletes, etc. in more action roles rather than doing tried-and-true martial artists (even Jason Stratham used to be a swimmer before he got into acting). It does give more diversity to movements and action sequences and it’s nice to see people segue their talents both in front of and behind the scenes. Idk if it’s her team or what. But they’ve been trying to make Sofia into a bonafide action star for 10+ years (see the recent Mummy film) and I don’t think it’s only her acting. I think she just gets these lackluster scripts and characters. Like she’d honestly be perfect for a Fast/Furious movie or (dare I say) a DCEU/Marvel project as a springboard into more action movies that can show if she’s bankable. But I feel like that ship has sailed now. The aforementioned franchises are in their last moments of relevancy or going through a corporate shakeup/redirection. Like she’s got an amazing body/physique but she’s 40+ now. Even for men, it’s hard to break into your “action star” days when you’re post-40. You need to be established in that genre and especially into an established franchise by the time you’re 30-35. That way, at least for franchises, they can get 3-5 flicks out of you. She’s chasing the career of an up-and-coming starlet in her 20s when she’s already in her 40s. I honestly think this movie would have been great with Tarak as the main character and Sofia as a disgruntled/AWOL military officer who wants to redeem herself for her past atrocities.
Tell that to Paul Rudd, Robert Downey, and Milla Jovovich.. There’s your actual age, and your biological age. She may be 40+, but she doesn’t look it. Look at the Marvel cast and they’re all in their 30’s and fifties. Some of them even got there action star roles at those ages, and there’s nothing stopping them from still getting those roles. So age has nothing to do with it, concerning them and Sofia.

I resubbed to Netflix, settled in to watch Rebel Moon the night of release, started falling asleep a third of the way through, continued the next morning, got increasingly bored and frustrated as the movie went on, unsubbed right after. This movie was a huge step backwards in filmmaking. They even went with Commando style battles, where Arnold could casually stroll through the fight and pick his targets. The bad guy has his teeth knocked out, they focus on the teeth scattering. Then they revive him and his teeth are back. I guess "hit him with everything" included giving him dentures. The only thing missing was a Hot Shots: Part Deux ripoff with General Titus declaring, "I can kill again, you've given me a reason to live!" It was like Kora was Korg from Thor: Ragnarok. "Hey, me and my friends are going to get on that ship and go save some farmers, wanna come?" All they had to do was think for five minutes and come up with a rare resource that the bad guys needed, unobtanium if you will, and we could have avoided all of this "empire can't grow food?" criticism. Seriously, wtf was this? Are they openly mocking audiences at this point?

I haven’t seen the latest Magnificent 7 movie in like 2 years and can still remember several characters and great shootouts. I couldn’t remember a single character from this movie literally while they were on screen.
The most stupid part about this movie is that none of the characters that get recruited have any reason to come along or defend the village. None of them have any personal connection to the protagonist or village. Its just that they dont like the Motherland, but thats no reason to defend a single village in the middle of nowhere from some huge invasion army. The protagonist doesnt help them in any way during any of the recruitments, except a speech of 5 sentences to get the general in order. The rest of the recruits just get something done whilst she watches and then they follow her. I would say the protagonist did more harm than good in this movie. Due to her actions an entire planets gets destroyed and the resistance is down half its fighters. But hooray, a village with 50 people with so significant value is saved, so theres that.
I saw someone post this on reddit: It should have focussed on Sam, Jimmy, and the soldier kid who turned his back on the Motherworld. They were the most interesting characters and you could have had them look for the Bloodaxes, which leads the Motherworld to really knuckle down on the community. Like that you've cut the cast in half and now have time to actually flesh characters out.
You don't even need to cut the cast in half. Look at lord of the rings. We got like 20 characters in the first movie alone, yet at the end of the fellowship of the ring we were rooting for every single one of them. You need to be an actually competent writer.

Haven't watched the whole thing yet (only part 1) but what kept running through my head was it's just another twist on "Seven Samurai" ... Rural village being oppressed by some bad guys and the villagers sends a small group out to find warriors to defend them with little to offer in return. Mix in a futuristic SiFi universe with some galactic bad guys opposed by some mysterious rebels, blaster battles where people can't hit the broad side of the barn from the inside, some droids, state of the art special effects and you get a movie that though visually appealing leaves you thinking they blew their budget on Special-Effects vs. character development.
Star Wars already did Seven Samurai in Clone Wars. No need to see it again, probably why Disney was not interested. I don't like to say anything nice about Kathleen Kennedy but maybe someone else can try.
I dont have a problem with slow motion in action scenes when its used as tool for a specific job, to really focus on something important that's happening in the scene. It can be great. But it feels like Snyder more or less injects slow motion into the action as a repeating pattern, regardless of what's happening or what's important to focus on. And most of the time the slow mo will drain the energy and momentum out of what could otherwise be an exciting, kinetic action scene. Good editing choices are what make a great action scene, not how many times the speed changes.
The only character im actually interested in was the robot and his relationship with the farm girl (the farm girl that absolutely is not the princess the MC was protecting before she left the empire, you know, the same princess the robot said she reminded it of).

'Capricorn One' popped up on Tubi today and so far the first 20 minutes is far more interesting and engaging -- without any CGI or really any special effects at all -- than the vast majority of big budget movies for the last five or so years. Wow, good writing and acting, what a concept. . . . .
Come on, let's be real. By any objective standards, Capricorn One is pretty mid. The most stand out aspect of it is the INCREDIBLE Jerry Goldsmith score.
Back when acters had to actually work and be good to get roles, now they just have to be the right color/gender/sexual orientation or post pics of their butts on TikTok.
You know, I like to write my own storys and to be honest a lot is copied from other storys. However everytime I think I have a nice story, Drinker publishes a video, perfectly describing why my story sucks XD However I also could use a lot of good advice from him and improve my story over time. So thank you Drinker!
I would read some of his work before asking for advice. I tried and it was pretty awful. So while he brings up good points, it's often easier to criticize a better author's work than to create your own. There's better authors on TH-cam giving out advice is all I'm saying. Keep writing!

He writes. But not very good. His style is as dated as a pair of discovered bell bottoms; full of genre clichés and familiar tropes. As stated, it's so much easier to criticise others' works than to fabricate something of greater substance oneself. Still, I do find myself predominantly agreeing with his criticisms. Most everything produced these days is utter dreck.
I would like to watch a movie that sets out to tell a compelling story with interesting characters who actually develop by the end. Movies definitely aren't what they used to be. Love what The Drinker does. Merry Christmas!
I've noticed that films I'm watching are all over 20 years old, and they are brilliant. Plot,acting, not being talked down to and 'the MESSAGE' - not a trace of that starting to rear it head. Look at the crap coming out of Hollywood now, its all terrible, I feel sorry for movie critics such as the critical drinker who have to watch this crap so we dont have to. Whe we are going to see a return to amazing films again... soon I hope, but I doubt it. I'll just find more and more obscure films nearer my birthday than nearer the present day.

Hollywood no longer makes anything original or worth seeking out, and there's already thousands upon thousands of hours of older shows and entertainment at our fingertips. I went to the cinema on a Friday after work back in 79,because Ide heard about this movie called Star Wars ,I stayed till 2:30 in the morning,just going out to get another ticket then straight back in for the next session, then did it again the next Friday ,fell asleep on the train going home ,woke up to find the train I was in had been put in a yard ,finally got home at 6 in the morning to my petrified mother who had called me in to the police as a missing person, ah yes that’s what Star Wars did to me
One day in 1977, I went to the theater to watch a movie, didn't know which I'd choose. Saw the publicity pics in the lobby for one, some sci fi thing with a guy standing near what I thought was an unusual monorail car. Thought "Why not?" Watched the film, walked back outside to see a line stretching into the parking lot. Got back in the queue and didn't even mind the wait. That is my introduction to the "Star Wars" story. Spent each night the next week watching that flick, then tapered off to once or twice a week.
As cheesy as that reel of celluloid is, no other film has had that kind of effect on me.

It's criminal to not mention how HEAVILY this movie was inspired by warhammer 40k. The robot literally says he's part of the "Mechanicus Militarium". The soldiers main gun looks identical to a bolter except scaled down. The general astetic of "The Empire" fits more with 40k than starwars and the plot of the royal family sounds like something ripped straight from the 40k wiki. To top it all off, the basic grunts look IDENTICAL to 40k guardsmen just with slightly different texture and color of the armor.
At least we now know who we don't want to direct any Warhammer media.

Maybe if they'd have leaned into it more and gone more grim dark, it might have been halfway decent. Unfortunately, it's pretty damned generic once you get about halfway through the movie.

Well, you can look at it as a cationary tale. We live in some kind of "high tech" civilisation. But GMO do not work as advertised, hydroponics can not work at the scale we need, and we can not eat bitcoins... No grains, no food, no people...

Yeah it seemed odd that they expect us to get behind the idea that a galaxy spanning empire wants to feed its army w/the product produced from a single small village that farms exclusively through muscle w/out any advanced farming tech. How much food can they possibly make? If an army in that setting needs food they gonna need way more than that, and they are the official army so they probably have money to simply buy. The village is just way too insignificant to have the importance accorded to it that it apparently has. A galaxy spanning empire wouldn't send armies out without provisions or an established means to get needed provisions. Such an army would still need to resupply, but there'd be some sort of system in place to provide for this supply. If they just raid their own lands for food, if that's their system, this could result in oppression of farmers, sure, but it would be a trickle down effect, the army would just show up at a depot that sells food in the bulk quantities it needs and in the great variety it needs, and processed already, and buy or requisition it by legal right at which point the depot owners would pass the expense on down the line, and that's where the oppression would come from. They wouldn't go farm to farm manually collecting the unprocessed food product themselves. And this village makes grains or whatever, so they'd go through a lot of effort, harming their own empire in the process, harming future ongoing supplies, and they'd get a bunch of unprocessed grains as a result. And why does this moon with good soil have only one village making food on it.
I didn't hate the movie. Had fun watching hte action scenes. Was worth the watch for free as a surprise offering through netflix. But stuff like the above was like a splinter in my mind as I watched. With more splinters to come as I progressed.

The reason the Rebels in Star Wars stood a chance is cause the Empire couldn't pin them down. The Rebellion kept moving. They had ships and unknown supporters all across the galaxy.
If you want to protect a farming settlement from the evil empire, it helps if they dont have space ships with the ability to wipe that farming settlement off the face of the planet in about five seconds.

The main take away I get from so many recent Hollywood products is that the future they paint is bleak. Even when the characters they present as the 'good -guys- they/thems' prevail, the simulacrum of a world they've created is at best dull and gray, and populated with automatons in skin-suits who can't even manage to interact as actual human beings.
This is what you get when narcissists and/or sociopaths write stories. They already don't understand how normal people feel about that which is bad, so why would the understand a normal person's ideals and hope for the future?
As far as modern Hollywood is concerned, the future is just like now, except with more gizmos. Their 'future realism' is that there are enlightened characters who share their political views on race and gender, who are the protagonists, and everyone else, who are either misguided and just need the protagonists to enlighten them, or choose to be 'wrong', and are the antagonists.
Star Trek Discovery and Picard are perfect examples of this, and compared to old Trek, might as well be set in completely different universes in terms of their settings.
Automatons in skin-suits who don't human well... you've just described the entire modern left.
Hollywood has a low opinion of humanity. Almost Every future they portray is dystopian. The excuse that "its more interesting" falls flat as there will always be dangerous places in a galaxy that is otherwise at peace, lead by people who are not idiots/corrupt.

Every companion went from "let's talk" to "let's go" in minutes without a single request, task, or challenge. Even rpgs make you work more.
I think that just shows that the vast majority of people feel oppressed by the kingdom. The dude that found everyone to put the crew together, planned on selling them out. He specifically chose people who were dangerous and already fought against the kingdom. Convincing those specific people to join a resistance group shouldn’t have been that hard.

The biggest issue I had was Tarak. Why did he have to wait for the protagonists to greet him for him to free himself? Did the beast arrive just before the protagonists got there? Id the beast was there all this time we have a plot hole and if it wasn’t we have a massive coincidence. Either way it is shoddy writing.

That was my reaction.. I told my friend, video game stories have more complexity lol. I enjoyed it as a turn brain off, watch shit explode, see a new world kinda way, but knew it was not.. good lol
I found the opening pretty good, basically right up until the antagonist guy landed to talk to the farmers and that was when it all started going off the rails for me. The idea of this huge space-faring empire still needing to exploit basic resources like grain to survive, sounded interesting. It suggested that even food is somewhat scarce in the far reaches of the galaxy, even if this particular village isn't starving.
But. There's a GIANT FUCKIN SPACEPORT CITY a few miles away from the village? The empire guys wouldn't just go there and raid that city for food immediately, why exactly? Why was it preferable for them to waste time hassling a little village of like a hundred medieval peasants for food? (and who don't even HAVE the food yet, they are literal months away from producing said food)
My thinking on that has to do with reoccurring grain. They’d get what they want from the farmer and maybe not the space port

The simple fact that in one monologue she states she doesn't know if she could love or be loved because they beat love out of her as weakness only to then in the next monologue state that at the academy they were told to find a lover for those moment when abstract conquest didn't bind them. This is the curse of all modern filmmaking - dragging everything out way too long. The next director who comes along that knows how to tell a compelling story in 80 minutes + credits is going to be a rock star.
Slow motion should be a last resort used sparingly like minimal slowdown for brief periods and to enhance the overall composition.
Where it does work: as the culmination of a series of increasingly fast cuts in a boxing match, one slow motion shot of the punch knocking someone senseless, not very slow, only to make something highly significant just long enough to see that would otherwise last a fraction of a second.
Where it doesn't work: just cutting to an extreme slow mo shot of someone walking so they go from walking slowly to barely moving at all and it just hold on it showing off all the rich detail but, what is important? What is happening here that I need to focus on. It just seems like it's showing off what a high speed camera they have.

I'm normally pretty easy going with sci fi as i find the worldbuilding as interesting as the actual plot but it was just all over the place. I still don't understand the world. You have a warhammer style empire, but we learned next to nothing about it.
There's a viking farming village for some reason which has orgies in the hopes that it convinces the gods to make their plants grow, since they've decided the only modern technology they're going to use are automatic doors, and that's an overnight hike from a western style town with a space port and a load of aliens which where never explained or expanded on so fuck knows if they're part of the empire, have civilisations outside the empire or fought the empire, and there's an Irish guy. There was a cyber punk city where Asian people use swords for honor because we've not moved on from that cliche, and spider women who apparently used to own the planet and so kidnap children, no need to expand on that. A roman colleseum, don't know what the fuck that was about, but i expected to see Russell Crowe wandering around in the background and then at some point conan the barbarian went to an American ranch at hogwarts to train a hippogriff using a slow motion spell or something, I think I zoned out at that part.

You know whats also weird? The soldier that tried to help the farm girl never shows up again even though he probably should have become part of the rebel team giving he fought back against them
He probably will make a comeback in the next episode with the farm girl. They didn't really give any motive why that soldier decided to betray his comrades like that to begin with.

Exactly! The way they clearly set him up to be one of the rebel members and then just dropping him from the movie. Same as the robot. He shows up at the beginning, shoots a guy, then disappears until the literal very end of the movie where it acts like he was some major character.
Exactly! For a moment I thought I had a micro-stroke when next scene shows Sofia Boutella's character with the farm guy looking for rebels at the cantina. I was like, "where's the soldier guy?". Isn't he a traitor at this point? Shouldn't he be on the journey with them? Why leave the robot behind as well? And the worst part is, if we moved some characters around the complete lack of story wouldn't really change that much.
I watched this with my mom, who stealthily and brilliantly dropped quotes from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Bladerunner, and Dune into scenes where they actually fit perfectly. When your elderly mother can do that, you KNOW the film is derivative.😂

Zack Snyder has never heard the old filmmaking adage, "show, don't tell," apparently. So much exposition! Exposition probably eats up more screen time than the slow-mo, which is saying something in a Snyder film.
He’s desperate for a cinematic universe of his own.. so much so he’s greenlighted a bunch of spin-offs that are probably gonna get cancelled like his “Army of The Dead universe” which is apparently set in THIS universe 🤦🏽♂️
He actually did show and didn't tell a lot in his DC trilogy, but y'all complained about it because you are too dumb to pay attention to what's going on on the screen, so now you hate him because he's gone the total opposite of that.
For real… I felt like so much of this movie was contrived scenes where the entire interaction between two characters is one “telling” the other some worldbuilding through flashback lmao. And it kept happening over and over.
I laughed so much at the end. This bunch of "heroes" all stood together after the final battle. I was like, who the hell are any of these? We haven't even gotten to know any of them and they did absolutely nothing in the fighting 🤣😂
I agree, it was baffling. They lost possibly the most useful member of the team taking down a small drop ship and acted like they had struck a huge blow to a galactic empire.
They introduced them by what they can do, not by who they are.
I've always thought Snyder was one of the most overrated filmmakers in the past 20 years. Sure I enjoyed 300, and The Watchmen, and I don't get the hate for Man of Steel, but most of his stuff has been terribly mediocre. Even the "Snyder Cut" of Justice League was crap imo

I couldn't get through it. My dad and I gave it a try, but I had a sinking feeling almost immediately watching Kora dramatically dragging her fingers through the earth and smelling it while Farmboy stares awestruck at her. My eyes rolled back in my head and almost got stuck there. By the time Sword woman was fighting Spider Lady, we were just... why are they there? Did we doze off and miss a plot point? We might have. But finally we just gave it up and went back to re-watching Stargate Atlantis.
I really hope Stargate will not have remake/origin story or whatever in current era.

It was like they made it to be that and thought they'd magically fill in some garbage plot at the end but ended up doing nothing at all and pretending it's all some ancient alien race with zero plot development or payoff.
I suspect that movies today are being designed, not written. The director comes up with a list of fantastical shots he wants to bring to the screen and then tries to connect them all into a story. The result is dispassionate and disconnected, with no regard to the actual characters which are just vehicles to get us to the next cool shot. AI won't have to struggle hard to replace writers if this is the new trend in Hollywood.

Seven Samurai worked because the heart of that movie is the character development--but that all happens in the *preparation of the defense* not in the gathering of the players. There's a reason why Kurosawa only spends ... what, 30m? ... on the setup; all that's needed is to give us the basic character sketch. The bulk of the movie is watching our players work with each other and the villagers, and seeing how they *grow and change* over that experience. The fight at the end isn't really the *climax,* it's the *denouement* where we see how our players have changed in relation to themselves, each other, and the villagers. Snyder stretches the gathering of the players, but then *fails to use that time* to do any of this work--so when Generic Rebel bites it, the *only* person who cares is Discount Furiosa--and the *only reason we know this* is because *she straight-up tells us in her first line.*
Also, the reason the *plot* of Seven Samurai even works is because the antagonist *is a bandit* and bandits don't have a *bench.* You beat them once and they're gone. Here, *it's an interplanetary empire.* How, exactly, is this supposed to play out? "My liege, they have destroyed our squadron." "Fine, send the fleet." Yes yes, spark that lights the fire and all that, but *we aren't shown that these conditions even exist.* Generic Rebel's sister actually tells us they *don't* exist, because they don't have sufficient force to take on the *squadron* much less the *fleet.* So ... yeah, that pretty much made me laugh out loud.

I think the main character annoyed me the most partly because I LOVE roleplaying and writing those edgy ass characters with sad/violent backstories. The whole fun of them is the mystery, and strained interactions with others gradually giving way to real bonds and softer moments as they learn to open up. Cora (kora? idk how it's meant to be spelled) just kind of... dumps her horrific past on Farmer Boy for no reason??? "i need you to know who i am" is what she says, but WHY? the mission would not be changed. his motivation has nothing to do with her, and whilst it's useful for the AUDIENCE to know in order to understand her own motivation. if you need such a lazy exposition scene to get across important information about your main character to the viewer, then maybe it's time to rewrite a few things
she was telling him bc he asked how she knew they would take over it wasnt part of her motivation as far as gathering a team goes
There are 2 reasons that completely sink the ship:
1. The unique characters, we spend a hour recruiting, dont affect the plot at all. And its not even fun hanging around with them.
2. The plot - like what are a few maybe even hundreds of soldiers going to do, when the enemy has a Dreadnought they can use to blast them back to the stone age?
As an extension - is the empire even evil? They conquered a few planets like ok. The Admiral kills two men who lie to him and nukes a planet which gave ressources/shelter to a terrorist organization - lying to authorities and aiding and abetting is crime here too. Exsessive yes - evil not necissarily

There’s a reason why great actresses like Emily Blunt refuse to look at scripts that have “strong, independent badass woman” in it. Honestly, I didn't mind Sofia's character at all, she was "strong, independent badass woman", but she wasn't stupidly OP like what they did with Rey in Star Wars, where basically within 2 weeks since discovering the Force she was the most powerful jedi that ever lived. Or Captain Marvel. Kora was raised as a soldier her entire life. However the movie is flawed with weak worldbuilding, weak or nonexistent interactions between the characters, sometimes strikingly cheap CGI, and weak action with ridiculously overused slow-motion that kills every fight.

My brother (who is in his third year of film school) started watching this movie on a whim and I made the regrettable decision to join him. If I hadn't he would have quite watching after the 15 minute mark. We ended up watching both movies pausing regularly to use our cinematography knowledge to pick apart everything that was bad about it. At the end of the first movie, my brother said the sobering line that really cut to the heart of why we hated these two movies and Zack Snyder: "Why did I bother going to film school and work myself half to death when this is what passes for a movie these days?"
The depth to which Zack Snyder plumbs the possibilities of lazy and incompetent cinematography is absolutely incredible.
It took me 7 hours to watch this movie because i had to watch it in intervals to keep my eyes from melting and brain exploding. I really went into this with hopes of something good. This made Jupiter Ascending feel like and academy award winning space opera!

It took me three tries to watch this movie. I fell asleep the first two times.
The thing that gets me is the bewildering timescale. The king and Princess apparently ruled in ancient times, such a long time ago that religions and mythology have built up about them - but it's about 5 years. I have socks older than that, and they haven't developed a religion of non-violence against other socks.

I just watched this movie with my brothers and was constantly asking 'why' during the entire thing.
This is the mindset of this village a few days' ride away form a neutral spaceport:
"Evil guys came by to ask for our supplies which we don't have enough of because we sold them to the rebels, we don't line up our lies (despite being in the same room when the first lie was said) and things go tits up so our leader is executed. They say they'll return to rob and kill us in a few months and leave a band of evil mooks who wanted to assault little girls behind but our resident STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER girlbossed these bad guys into a grave. Should we leave? Nah, it'll be fine. If we work hard we can give them our stuff they will like us enough to not just not murder us after we fulfilled our purpose of letting them resupply, they will also probably leave us enough to survive the winter!"
And then the protagonist, instead of leaving to let these morons win a Darwin award like she planned, decides to go recruit the rebel army and a general to save them with, even though they end up not being needed because the final battle takes place somewhere unrelated.
Also, why was this little village on a planet on the ass-end of no-where populated with people that spoke in a mix of heavy accents that were, as far as I could tell, from Scandinavian countries, several parts of Great Britain and one obviously Dutch guy?
Imagine how abysmal a movie must be when Drinker tears it a new one without even having to bring up THE MESSAGE

Crazy to think that the Dungeons & Dragons movie last year had some of the premises of this movie but it's just 1000x better, funnier and colorful.
Roger Corman literally made the same movie, called ''Battle Beyond The Stars'', back in 1980 and it has better characters, writing, world building, is more fun & even has Sybil Danning as a sexy Space Valkyrie.
And Roger Corman managed to produce this movie with a fraction of the budget & the technology that Snyder had available!

I watched this with my family, my mom fell asleep and my dad and I were making fun of it the entire time. I think one of the biggest reasons it sucked was that nothing in the movie happened to make us care about the characters outside of the main character needing them. It has been said before in the comments but it tries so hard to be Warhammer 40k. Also my favorite character is Noble because his actor feels like a Walmart Cillian Murphy, still really liked him and his performance though the guy has great screen presence and charisma

It wasn't terrible just tired of seeing a tiny woman throwing around men like it's nothing. I'm 5 1, 95 pounds . My fiance is 5 11, 185 pounds, he's a construction worker that lifts weights 3-4 days a week. Now imagine me being able to save him in a physical altercation and doing all the hard physical labor while he stands around and watches. It's silly.

Big bad spaceship with polite but evil leader politely demands an isolated farming community give him everything they have and then murders everyone for daring to object and I was like "Yep, seen this movie before. I'm gonna go solve puzzles and argue philosophy with robots in Talos Principle 2 now, thanks."

I'm glad you mentioned the slo-mo overuse. It started off funny but then became agonising to watch. I fell like the film could be half an hour shorter without the slo-mo.
They really went hard on the tell don't show version of the Magnificent Seven in space. It felt like something that should have been a season crammed together into a frankenmovie. The characters don't have character and do things so the movie can happen, instead of having reasons to work together. This would have worked a lot better as a getting the gang back together or basing gathering a group based on prior relationships, if they wanted to minimal character interaction because it got in the way of the special effects. Without relationships as the basis of joining, these characters would have told their "who the hell are you" recruiter to sod off. If they wanted a believable engagement of a starship captain scruffy nerfherder they should have had the main character save him from a perilous situation where he had to leave the planet anyways, had him have a previous relationship with her, owe her or the farm manager a huge debt, or have the cash to pay him (like a squirreled away buried treasure salvaged from the crash for just such emergencies after joining the Space Amish). It's just poor writing.

I made through about half of this movie until I gave up and thought to myself ‘I wonder what the Drinker thought about this?’.

You nailed it on every aspect of this train wreck of a movie. I watched the whole thing even when there were plenty of moments where I asked myself, "When will they start telling a story?" Character development is integral to any story, and this film had little to none of that for any of the characters including the "main" character. It was just a series of setups from hey, the bad guys show up and threaten simple people. Time to gather up a rag tag team of defenders. Enter big, loud and noisy combat sequences. By the end of the movie, the only feeling I had was that of being insulted by the self-indulgence of a lazy filmmaker with lots of money in his pockets.
It's almost like a knock-off version of June and Star wars combined into a cheap flimsy imitation that wouldn't last 5 minutes compared to the real product. There no blood part was when it lost me and didn't get me back too
The problem isn't what they have in the pockets. It's what they have in mind (and lack in the heart), with their pathological denial of human psychology, both sane and pathological, and its socio-cultural consequences toward relative harmony, or compulsive self-indulgence/self-destruction.

I was interested in this movie when I first saw the title. I mistook it for an adaptation of Robert Heinlein's 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'. I'd love to see someone do that story. A rebellious penal colony on Earth's moon sounds pretty interesting to me.

Another Female Character without any flaws or struggle story what they presented as her backstory was essentially parents die but you are great at everything from birth. Even at the presented height of her ability she had no weakness, no need to rely on her group members. No over confidence or self doubt. Just "Badass bitch, ima slay" was the only narrative. Missing one all important aspect of good character writing, flaws. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy and say Quill, was that he was very broken as a character but the group each with their own unique ability made up for the deficiencies he had, it made him an endearing and relatable. But there is zero attempt at this, in this film. Much like every film produced in the last 5 years.
The physical strength she possessed in melee was absurd given her frame is tiny and I was left questioning how somebody with no implants or obvious upper body weight can put tall physically built male soldiers onto the ground. I really tried to identify with her and I love female protagonists in other films where they understand there are different strengths to brute force and they work around that with technique, dexterity and agility. But this was just ridiculous, the whole performance screamed "bulls**t".
If we have to go down the world where all protagonists *have* to now be female, or diverse. Can you for the love of god, atleast write a decent character story arc. One where they have flaws and are not just born omnipotent.

Kinda also like Heroes... they cancelled it after 4 seasons... but then gave the guy a chance to "do something different" and came out with Heroes Reborn and it was exactly like the original series. He didn't fix anything. He paced it exactly the same. Wrote it exactly the same. And I was thinking to myself... MAN... you had a second chance! How often do you get that in TV? Especially with science fiction!!! You blew it. You'll never get a season 2... and... he didn't...

Great aesthetics and some really cool character designs, but it desperately needed to derail and have some chaotic fun. Instead it just hopped from A to B to C giving each new character their allocated time slot before doing nothing with it.
This comment makes the most sense out of all the above ones. The fast jumps are the reason the movie is boring, we don't have time with the characters for a soul to form. I think the movie should have more runtime distributing time for proper character depth. But after watching the first trailer again, I have a feeling maybe the 2nd movie has the major portion of this series. Because there are character backstories in the first trailer but none made it into this film.

As a huge dune fan and a Denis Villeneuve fan I had high hopes for the new movies, the first is very good but I feel that it still didn't quite do the book enough credit. No doubt due to time limits etc he did the best he could with the time available but there's just not enough depth to the various factions. For example the Bene Gesserit are almost as capable as the Kwisatz Haderach but none of that came across in the first film at all. Hoping for more in parts 2 and 3 with all I have. Would have preferred a Game of Thrones type of TV series over several seasons than a couple of 2 hour films cramming it all in.
No offense but I couldn't even finish the dune movie. Shit was a snooze fest just like rebel moon.

I was absolutely Blown Away, by the reviews that people gave on Google. It seemed like it was nothing but five stars and four stars over and over. There were a few dissenters who pointed out exactly what was wrong just as you did, but they were the exception. This is what makes the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and even IMDb very suspicious. It would be nice to have an unbiased and honest place to go for reviews. I think that's why everyone values the reviews you give, because they definitely seem honest. And I hope you never lose your integrity because someone pulls up with a dump truck full of cash.
Truth is really hard to find these days. It's quite irritating. And it's not just stupid Google's fault. There's lots of people in companies flooding reviews and information sites with whatever they want to help sell whatever they are selling.
@@CalvinHikes Not just people in companies but actual companies that do nothing but post fake reviews and leave false impressions. Advertising has gotten very blatant and clumsy in it's methods. I think it's easy to spot when there are reviews coming from brand new accounts using the same language or phrases and even full posts that are copies.

I feel bad for Sofia. Like I kinda like that Hollywood is starting to cast dancers, stunt people, athletes, etc. in more action roles rather than doing tried-and-true martial artists (even Jason Stratham used to be a swimmer before he got into acting). It does give more diversity to movements and action sequences and it’s nice to see people segue their talents both in front of and behind the scenes.
Idk if it’s her team or what. But they’ve been trying to make Sofia into a bonafide action star for 10+ years (see the recent Mummy film) and I don’t think it’s only her acting. I think she just gets these lackluster scripts and characters. Like she’d honestly be perfect for a Fast/Furious movie or (dare I say) a DCEU/Marvel project as a springboard into more action movies that can show if she’s bankable.
But I feel like that ship has sailed now. The aforementioned franchises are in their last moments of relevancy or going through a corporate shakeup/redirection. Like she’s got an amazing body/physique but she’s 40+ now. Even for men, it’s hard to break into your “action star” days when you’re post-40. You need to be established in that genre and especially into an established franchise by the time you’re 30-35. That way, at least for franchises, they can get 3-5 flicks out of you. She’s chasing the career of an up-and-coming starlet in her 20s when she’s already in her 40s.
I honestly think this movie would have been great with Tarak as the main character and Sofia as a disgruntled/AWOL military officer who wants to redeem herself for her past atrocities.
Tell that to Paul Rudd, Robert Downey, and Milla Jovovich..
There’s your actual age, and your biological age. She may be 40+, but she doesn’t look it. Look at the Marvel cast and they’re all in their 30’s and fifties. Some of them even got there action star roles at those ages, and there’s nothing stopping them from still getting those roles. So age has nothing to do with it, concerning them and Sofia.

I resubbed to Netflix, settled in to watch Rebel Moon the night of release, started falling asleep a third of the way through, continued the next morning, got increasingly bored and frustrated as the movie went on, unsubbed right after. This movie was a huge step backwards in filmmaking. They even went with Commando style battles, where Arnold could casually stroll through the fight and pick his targets.
The bad guy has his teeth knocked out, they focus on the teeth scattering. Then they revive him and his teeth are back. I guess "hit him with everything" included giving him dentures.
The only thing missing was a Hot Shots: Part Deux ripoff with General Titus declaring, "I can kill again, you've given me a reason to live!"
It was like Kora was Korg from Thor: Ragnarok. "Hey, me and my friends are going to get on that ship and go save some farmers, wanna come?"
All they had to do was think for five minutes and come up with a rare resource that the bad guys needed, unobtanium if you will, and we could have avoided all of this "empire can't grow food?" criticism.

I haven’t seen the latest Magnificent 7 movie in like 2 years and can still remember several characters and great shootouts. I couldn’t remember a single character from this movie literally while they were on screen.
The most stupid part about this movie is that none of the characters that get recruited have any reason to come along or defend the village. None of them have any personal connection to the protagonist or village. Its just that they dont like the Motherland, but thats no reason to defend a single village in the middle of nowhere from some huge invasion army. The protagonist doesnt help them in any way during any of the recruitments, except a speech of 5 sentences to get the general in order. The rest of the recruits just get something done whilst she watches and then they follow her.
I would say the protagonist did more harm than good in this movie. Due to her actions an entire planets gets destroyed and the resistance is down half its fighters. But hooray, a village with 50 people with so significant value is saved, so theres that.
I saw someone post this on reddit: It should have focussed on Sam, Jimmy, and the soldier kid who turned his back on the Motherworld. They were the most interesting characters and you could have had them look for the Bloodaxes, which leads the Motherworld to really knuckle down on the community. Like that you've cut the cast in half and now have time to actually flesh characters out.

You don't even need to cut the cast in half. Look at lord of the rings. We got like 20 characters in the first movie alone, yet at the end of the fellowship of the ring we were rooting for every single one of them. You need to be an actually competent writer.

Haven't watched the whole thing yet (only part 1) but what kept running through my head was it's just another twist on "Seven Samurai" ... Rural village being oppressed by some bad guys and the villagers sends a small group out to find warriors to defend them with little to offer in return. Mix in a futuristic SiFi universe with some galactic bad guys opposed by some mysterious rebels, blaster battles where people can't hit the broad side of the barn from the inside, some droids, state of the art special effects and you get a movie that though visually appealing leaves you thinking they blew their budget on Special-Effects vs. character development.
Star Wars already did Seven Samurai in Clone Wars. No need to see it again, probably why Disney was not interested. I don't like to say anything nice about Kathleen Kennedy but maybe someone else can try.

I dont have a problem with slow motion in action scenes when its used as tool for a specific job, to really focus on something important that's happening in the scene. It can be great. But it feels like Snyder more or less injects slow motion into the action as a repeating pattern, regardless of what's happening or what's important to focus on. And most of the time the slow mo will drain the energy and momentum out of what could otherwise be an exciting, kinetic action scene. Good editing choices are what make a great action scene, not how many times the speed changes.
There is a scene of rice falling on a floor in slowmo. RICE. FALLING. ON. FLOOR. in slow mo. Just why?

'Capricorn One' popped up on Tubi today and so far the first 20 minutes is far more interesting and engaging -- without any CGI or really any special effects at all -- than the vast majority of big budget movies for the last five or so years. Wow, good writing and acting, what a concept. . . . .
Come on, let's be real. By any objective standards, Capricorn One is pretty mid. The most stand out aspect of it is the INCREDIBLE Jerry Goldsmith score.
Back when acters had to actually work and be good to get roles, now they just have to be the right color/gender/sexual orientation or post pics of their butts on TikTok.

However everytime I think I have a nice story, Drinker publishes a video, perfectly describing why my story sucks XD However I also could use a lot of good advice from him and improve my story over time. I would read some of his work before asking for advice. I tried and it was pretty awful. So while he brings up good points, it's often easier to criticize a better author's work than to create your own. There's better authors on TH-cam giving out advice is all I'm saying.

I've noticed that films I'm watching are all over 20 years old, and they are brilliant. Plot,acting, not being talked down to and 'the MESSAGE' - not a trace of that starting to rear it head. Look at the crap coming out of Hollywood now, its all terrible, I feel sorry for movie critics such as the critical drinker who have to watch this crap so we dont have to. Whe we are going to see a return to amazing films again... soon I hope, but I doubt it. I'll just find more and more obscure films nearer my birthday than nearer the present day.

Hollywood no longer makes anything original or worth seeking out, and there's already thousands upon thousands of hours of older shows and entertainment at our fingertips. Stop expecting anything new to be worth it, seek out what was worth it in the past and you won't be disappointed.
