Every year in June in Fairfield, Iowa, the National Power Wagon Rally is held which attracts owners from across the country. In 2018 I drove out for the meet as I have always felt that the Dodge Power Wagons were the best looking trucks ever built. I had the opportunity to interview Dave and Jens Butler, owners of Vintage Power Wagons and organizers of this annual meet. Here's their story...

Back in 1963 it was in Palembang, Indonesia ... my dad restored Dodge Power Wagon ... I don’t know what year of made (I think ex WW II) and after couple of months, she’s turned up became a beautiful truck, named “Lucy”... painted in Army green, red bumper complete with big PTO and she had dark green khaki tarpaulin to cover on top of the rear box and planted two long teak-wood bench for passengers ... and for couple years she’s became famous among travelers between city of Palembang and Jambi ... during wet season, she’s the only one who able to cross those muddy dirt road with huge pot holes along those tiring 280 km ... unfortunates buses & trucks got bogged down in the mud was pulled out by her, Lucy the savior ... I think later on my dad put her on sale before we leave to another city ...

Hi from Ireland, my father had 2 which he adapted to pickup style, these were used to make roads thru the peat bogs, they would load them with gravel with shovels, them haul about 2 miles to the roads, empty with shovels, slow work, but in 1950s Ireland, they were the only method of travelling on the swampy conditions in the bogs, straight 8 petrol engines,or 6,..one had big end failure, and 1 cylinder was made redundant by blanking the oil hole in the crankshaft, removing the conrad and piston, and it worked for years, had to because spares were not available here at the time,so needs must.!!.

The platoon I was in in the Army had 8 of them, they were great off road, but on the hwy top speed was about 50 MPH and that was pushing them really hard! I think the Army set the speed limit in these at 45 MPH.

These guys deserve credit for bringing all these Power Wagons out. They're making some of that stuff up though. The German's, in fact all, WWII militaries had 4x4 vehicles. For example the Germans had the Leichter Panzerspähwagen in the same class as the Power Wagon, and the half-tracks (which were more like the American 6x6 with tracks).

I have owned old Dod pickups for many years mainly M37 military 3/4 ton pickups did lots of work making 100% reliable again after neglect by previous owners and I sold my last M37 about a year ago. Along the way I hav collected a warehouse full of both US and German Military trucks and then a few years ago I bought a 1950 Power Wagon it had 18K original miles and NO RUST!! I have done a complete frame off chassis restoration including EVERYTHING is either rebuilt or brand new I had the the frame powder coated along with axle housings had to replace both Ring and pinions and all new bearing, rebuilt and new bearing in both trans and transfer case of course all the casings are powder coated along with virtually every component of this truck! I am getting very close to the point where I will take the completed chassis to the restoration shop and have them mount the cab and box for me they have been working on those parts for 6 months or so. When I get it back from them I have wiring and mounting tail lights and radiator, then mount the fenders and front body components and I really want to partake in this rally at least once before my truck gets sold! They are a long bygone era of AMERICA back when it meant to much more than it seems to NOW!! (at least to some people)

Had a friend that drove a 1963 Power Wagon when he worked the Saudi oil fields in the 70s, he said it was a great truck and never got stuck with its wide balloon tires but was very slow, flat out it would only just get over 40mph.

I have a 52 powerwagon. I restored it years ago. Replaced original engine with a 440 v8. Added power steering and power brakes and a/c. I use it on my ranch. It can take abuse at times. Eventually I would like an automatic and disc brakes on the front. I suggest finding the ex- military trucks and fix them up.

A '46-'47 *Power Wagon,* is my dream vehicle. Next, I want a1971 *AMC AMX Javelin.* And I guess I'll get a Lamborghini, just for picking up superficial chicks. Then when I'm ready for a real woman, I'll use the Power Wagon and Javelin 👍. Just kidding. I don't really have a Lamborghini on my list. I'm not into superficial women (or superficial _people_ for that matter) - lol 😆... I'm in my 50's, and as a teen, I tried to help some friends get their F-100 out of a mud hole in a swamp road, but they were axle deep. Eventually, someone's relative pulled in with a brand new Ford F-150 4X4... and it got stuck. So they called for a farm tractor, and it got stuck. Then a guy pulled in with a Power Wagon. He pulled out the tractor and the Ford 4X4, but that ripped the road up even worse, so the F-100 spent the night there. The next day the guy with the Power Wagon came back with shovels, ropes, chains, and a railroad jack, and we got the last truck out (or, he did). I was impressed. *_Very_* impressed.

As I understand it, many WW II Power Wagons and their variations would have another 'life' in the IDF. Eager for arms... the new state of Israel would 'paw through' the junk yards of Europe (early 50's) looking for military transport that could be taken back to Israel, refurbished and re-purposed. In films of the 1967 Six Day War you will see many of these trucks in use. Finally France (for a while) would become Israel's principle arms supplier. However, many WW II surplus 'goods' would appear again in the hands of the IDF as France handed off its remaining U.S. Lend/Lease 'stuff' to Israel... as well as selling new French arms to them.

They didn't call them power wagons they called them kraz ural and zil trucks before the war and technically not dodge they would be old farmall international trucks with Cummings international motors international scouts ect. Yes them old soviet boys and gals are pretty smart. The reason behind the us not having them until joining the alliance with russia in WW2 but based off Russian and Prussian trucks from Siberia loggers and farmers and such. After the war burned out scrap was plentiful to bulid such trucks old scrap yards and recovering lost or junked out on the roads came to use.
