Know your cars Clicks. Why it won't start

  • What I'm showing in this video is the basic checklist that you need to go through to troubleshoot your car or truck's noises in this case whenever you go to start it it just clicks. The first thing you need to make sure is that your battery has enough voltage in it to drive the starter and turn the engine. The easiest way to do that is to put a load on your battery in the way you do that is turn your key forward on your ignition into the run position and then turn your blower motor on high and then turn on your headlights and see if the blower motor drops considerably as far as the speed that its operating at. So you can have somebody check your headlights to C when the headlights are on high beams and you turn the blower motor on into the high speed position if the headlights go extremely dim and again the blower motor runs at a low speed. The reason you do that is because those two things are the biggest draw on the battery now if you have a rear defroster on your rear window that also can be used to see how much draw the battery can handle. One of the sure signs that you have either a battery connection problem or a little battery is when you turn the key forward to the start position and a series of rapid clicks go on underneath the hood sounds like a small machine gun. Usually that means that there's not enough battery juice to engage the starter relay fully. However if there isn't a rapid series of clicking and you have a hard click bitch is heard further down in the engine closer to where the starter is mounted it could mean that that. That your starter motor, that is the part that actually turns the engine, is bad and needs replaced. If you watch the steps that I take in the video I'll describe how you can turn the engine by hand Andrew out that you have any kind of a lockup problem with the engine itself. If the engine is turning freely as the accessories are too, then you most likely have a bad starter motor like is shown in this video. Thanks for watching .. click like or subscribe!

I wish I had learned all this at 18. That first sound at begin of video happened to me yesterday! I believe it was the starter! I was lucky enough to have a mechanic come out the grocery store and I should’ve asked if I had a dirty solenoid or if my starter need the banging to release the pin (the jam?). Anyhow, I’m thankful that people like you make videos like this! It’s so important. I get frazzled when I’m vehicle doesn’t start! I feel panicked! Worried!

Holy smokes! I think you just solved what's wrong with my motorcycle. The battery is brand new and everything lights up BUT the bike won't turn over. Instead, it's making the rapid "clicking sound" you mentioned which makes me suspect that it's the relay, not the starter. I already ordered the starter, and it's not hard to put in, so I will swap them both out.

For people that are having problems like this, another trick that works to know if the relay has gone bad, is to jump the two bolts with an isolated screwdriver (0:50), if the starter works, the problem might be the relay itself, a fuse that controls the relay, or the "s" cable that sends the signal from the ignition key to the relay itsfel. I'm currently waiting on a friend's tester to see if my S cable or relay is my actual problem. Starter working just fine.

I have a 95 Safari, & it will sometimes try to crank, just a little. New battery, starter checks good. The starter will spin, if I loosen the bolts, where it just hangs below the flywheel. I cannot find any corrosion. It does the same thing, when shorting the solenoid straight across. I pulled the positive cable off, & it has a slight crimp in the cable, about 6in from the starter. I have no idea what could have caused it. Could it be corroded in the middle of the cable, at this crimp, maybe? It started & ran fine, the day before this started.

Great video although just for your record the hammer tap trick on the starter only works if you have 2 people. One in the driver seat to start the car and another guy underneath the car tapping the starter with a hammer. If it was only you there then obviously it would not work because you need 2 people!

So if all of your accessories turn on just fine and the starter just rapidly clicks does that mean it's done for or ? I've just ran my whole front in throw a bunch of water.
