I love that you use bed sheets as your backing. I've been sewing and quilting for about 60 years and I used to use sheets for backing when I was younger. I stopped when the "professional" quilters said ...do not use sheets.
I'm back to using bedsheets...thank you
I'm so glad I found your channel! I love your energy and realness... what a great personality! You have a great sewing space too, especially because there's room for your puppies! Yay! 😊👍
And, of course, I think you are a very good instructor. You're bright and enthusiastic, yet you remain focused with clear instructions on how to proceed. I have subscribed, and look forward to more of your tutorials! Keep up the good work!
As a beginner quilter I learned a lot from this tutorial… Thank You!!
I love how expressive you are , it makes me smile your awesome!
Thank you! At the end of the day, that's what it's all about. 😊
I love this video. You are so personable and easy to understand. So glad I found this because I wanted to try pin basting because the spray baste is not working for me anymore. I have respiratory issues that the spray fumes aggravate. Also, suddenly I am going through needles like crazy and I feel it is due to the basting spray gumming up my needles. Also, I found a Kwik Klip thing in a box from a yard sale and had no idea what it was for. Thank you for taking the time to post this, even it it was years ago. Still great information.
Ok Jess, you have us hooked, now we need to see you finish your quilt !!! Thanks for showing us your method!
Awww Thank you for watching! Yes, quilting coming soon!
Thank you, thank you!! Heading to JoAnn’s for the quilting pins. I fought with my quilt top and backing all day and FINALLY watched your video!! I’m lucky enough to have two industrial tables from Home Depot, so I’m not working on the floor!
I always pinned my quilts on my concrete basement floor. It was perfect. Where we live now I have to use my garage floor. I may try the plastic tables. I already have one.
I pin baste on my kitchen table, using g clamps to hold the layers taut as I pin. Yes, the table gets scratched but it's a vintage pine table, not glossy fancy or anything. Saves me hours on my knees and my back pain!
That's a great idea, Ruby! I've been wanting to try basting on a table. Thanks for the tips!
Your pups are giving me life! I adore your channel.
Thank you!! That is such a kind thing to say ❤. Those pups are a mess but the sweetest!
Fantastic, I’ve used flat sheets for backing my quilts for over 20 years. My logic being, this quilt is for a bed, why not? Plus you get a lot of fabric for a great price.
I totally agree!
Looks like my house when I baste quilts. My Moose (yellow lab) and the 2 English Setters love to help lay everything out. I now use the table method.
Thank you for this tutorial ... very informativ and so much fun to watch... I feel with your dog "problem" ... I have a Labrador lady and her behavior is the sam ... I'm really happy to found you
And I thought I was the only weirdo who doesn't use a flat sheet on the bed! I like you already :) I use my flat sheets for test garments when I'm fitting a new pattern.
I've never pinned a quilt like this before. Looks interesting. My mom and I usually put our quilts up on a frame and hand stitch. My aunt bought a quilting machine 2 years ago, so I haven't hand stitched in awhile, but I'd love to again.
I love this video. I buy the 4 and 6 pk of flat sheets online Wal-Mart and Amazon.
Love your videos and 3 Dogs!!!!! Awesome!!!
Thanks for your tips. Please tell me the name of your quilt top pattern AND the fabric you used. Love it!!! Also loved watching the dogs. So cute. Especially the tail wagging under the sheet. ☺️
Great job, Jess!!!😊
Thank you Kathleen!
I don’t know how I found you but I love you and your work!!
That is such a kind comment!! Thank you!
When it comes to pin basting my quilts, I had to find an alternative to my tile floors; I have two dogs that love to “help.” I bought two of those folding plastic buffet tables pretty cheaply from Target. They store so easily. I set them up side by side in my living room, and pin baste on top of them. I don’t care about the plastic getting nicked up by the pins, and between the join of the two tables and the split in each one where they fold, I also have center cross hairs.
That is a FANTASTIC idea! I'm going to take this advice, as getting the dogs out of the space is getting harder and harder.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
Love this video!! Now please tell us the top pattern and fabric used! I love !!
Great video thanks for the tips ❤
I have pin basted on carpet with an old large cutting mat under it and scooch it around where I need to pin. It works and unfortunately, I'm about to have to do it again tomorrow, hence why I am refreshing myself up on this lol I also use extra sticky painters tape I got my painter husband to grab for me. I do think I'm going to spray baste a little bit too.
I have been using flannel sheets (from the nearly-new stores) instead of batting.
Thanks for sharing! If I use a sheet, do I need to keep it under a certain thread count? I've heard if the thread count is too high, then it causes problem with quilting.
Nice demonstration. At 74 crawling around the floor straightening, taping, more smoothing and then pinning isn't really practical for my arthritic wrists and knees. But thank you for the video 😊👍💕
Enjoyed watching your video. I'm too old to get down of the floor with my arthritic knees. I love your quilt top and would love to know the pattern name.
Its a great tutorial and I enjoyed it. Thank you for making this look easy
I don’t know exactly about wool batting. But I know wool is to be hand washed or dry clean only. Put it in the tub and let it soak with a little bit of movement. That’s what I do with my wool fabric.
I hope this helps.
Hi! I really love your videos!! I came across your videos just last week and have already watched quite a few. I tried a quilt sandwich on a smaller piece and I too thought it was not very hard to do. I did struggle with quilting it on my machine. Do you have a video of when you quilted one? I have two quilts that my grandmother made me 25 years ago when I got married. The back is worn out in several places and I want to put a new back on it, which is why i am trying to learn how to do this. I have taken it to 3 places to see if a long arm quilter would put a new back on it for me, however no one will touch it b/c it is made with foretell and velour material. It is a heavy quilt and originally hand stitches, nice and puffy. I have a non computerized older type sewing machine and I feel confident that I do the new back. I would just do straight lines and follow the squares. I originally thought of just putting the new back on over the old back. Do you recommend that? or should I take it all apart and then remove the old backing? It is mostly wore out around the edges on the top/bottom and sides. The middle part is okay. I miss sleeping with it b/c it is heavier and I always feel like i am tucked in, and I am needing that comfort now for some reason. I really appreciate all the links for the tools you use, I tried to find one of those quick click tools and no luck where I live. Thank you!
Just reading your comment...that seems like a good idea to just put another back on top of the old one...then you'll need to bind it again..I just put a new binding and patched a few holes on a client's quilt. It's a quilt over 50 years old! It was in her mom's closet for years. She surprised her mom...her mom sobbed when she saw it.
I found these little plastic cylinders called “pin-its” that I now use instead of closing the pins. They were kinda expensive, but I get tired of closing and opening all the pins. I like your idea to mark with washy tape where any pattern might be on the back. Could make lining it all up easier! Thanks!
Ooooo I have to find these pin-its now! Thanks for the tip!
New quilter here. Having a hard time getting the new curved pins to go through the sandwich. It’s all cotton nothing fancy and my mini practice sandwich. Any advice for this?
Sorry about your beautiful hand quilted quilt 😢
Did you re-quilt it ?
Thanks for your tutorial!
I cannot see links for products. Need tape, pins and pin closer thank you
Recently I have bought some dull safety pins. Any brand recommendations?
Lol I don't like to fight with the fitted sheet.
Jess, I'm pretty sure your labs are bigger than you :)! Love ALL your video!!!
I am 81 and can’t do it on the floor….so the kitchen table is it. I do spray baste inside and don’t seem like I am having any problems….but I also pin it to keep from getting pinches in the back…..
🤣 you are so cute and funny
Hi, everyone. This will be my first time quilting. What is the tape that Jess is using?
😂 🤪😜 it’s a bear to do. Small quilts are my thing. I did one very large Queen/King Lego quilt once and paid someone to do the actual quilting. 5cent per inch. $115.
why not use regular pins. Will they come out? first time quilter question!! lol
I can’t find the supply list😢
I have done 2 quilts that I basted with pins. It . Looks. Like. Crap. I'm ok with imperfection, but my quilts looked like they belonged in a retirement center. Does botox work on quilts?
Oh no!! Have you tried 505 Basting Spray? I know many people really prefer that method.
@@OklaRoots I got some for my next quilt! I will try it and see :)
I really like basting spray! It works wonderfully
I use the basting spray and pins. You don’t need a lot of spray. I use my dining room table and begin at the center. The only trouble I’ve had is when I bought some cotton fabric from Hobby Lobby for a border and it rippled a lot while I was free motion quilting, other than that I’ve had pretty good results with my backing not getting creased while I quilt my quilt. I usually make bed size quilts because I try to use up all the fabric bundle.
I bought what I thought were quality quilting pins. After pinning, I machine quilted about 1/3 of the quilt. I noticed I had some unwanted bunching that needed to be ripped out. Needless to say, I set the quilt aside. It sat for a year. I took out the stitching and started to remove the pins. To my horror, the pins rusted. How do I remove the rust spots? The fabric is 100% cotton.
Wait 40 or 50 more years & tell us how getting on the floor to sandwich your quilt works for you.. my solution is go to your church fellowship hall, push tables together and make your knees, hips hapoy😂
You took to long to get to the pining and then the camera was too far away to see where you were putting the pins. Did you put one one each square or 4? Or 5? Was it in the middle in some and on the sides on others? Sorry, I couldn’t follow you.
Good vid; don't give Amazon your valuable business, crooked company
4 minutes in and no quilt basting yet…. Talking about bedding.
thanks for the warning about wool batting!..... now i know to never buy it. ... basting in the driveway...yuck....driveways are dirty
Tooo much chatter...I want to learn basting
