  • This is the my cover of the Dwelling of Doom theme from Castlevania 2 - Simon's Quest on the NES .
This was super tricky technically (I should have expected that part really) and the execution is quite fast. In addition there's a harmony that needs to be tight behind the lead so I had to do quite a lot of practicing in order to get it right ... which took the most part of a week to nail down, leaving things quite late for recording and editing. AAaaaaand I decided, late, to add the accordion and bagpipes late in the editing process which didn't help with my schedule... but it was worth the effort , I'm pretty happy with the end result and this certainly a fun challenge.

When did you first play Castlevania 2 and what was your first impression of it ?

When I was 9 I swapped some game for Trojan; the kid had that and Simon's Quest...then the guy came back 20 minutes later and took Trojan and left me with Simon's Quest for 2 months...I really liked it! But I made my mates and I try and beat it for 20 years without walkthroughs...waste of time :D Your cover is absolutely brilliant, man. Thanks!

I remember the night I bought this. I hounded my dad to take me to buy it on a Friday night. I put up $30 of my own money, and he paid the rest. We picked it up from Wal-Mart.
I really liked it at first. The atmosphere and music were great, and I really liked the Action-RPG gameplay style. I was a huge rpg fan.
It didn't take long to become stuck though, and remember becoming really frustrated. Especially how the npc hints/dialogue didn't seem to apply to the actual in game scenario. Once I got my hands on the Nintendo power, it was full steam ahead.
I do remember that I was really let down about how lame the ending was... Empty castle, and an easy Dracula that didn't really look like Dracula. The game needed more castle action.

I used to rent this game on weekends when I was in 3rd grade. We lived in a rural part of my area, and during the week, I would pretend I was Simon and that I was traveling the countryside trying to solve Dracula riddle. I would sing all the tracks from this game, I had a makeshift whip and everything. I would always get stuck playing this game, but I loved it.

I got it for Christmas one year. Loved the cover art at the time (NES boxes still make me happy) and was super excited to play it. And it didn't really disappoint, honestly; in those days you didn't really think about how inconvenient it was to have to get the secrets from Nintendo Power. And I figured out most of them myself, got the mediocre ending, and haven't really gone back to it since, even though I still have that same copy sitting on my game shelf. Maybe one of these days.

Well, I´ve never played this one before, but the other Castlevania 2 (Belmont´s Revenge, Gameboy) Anyway, almost all Castlevania Games got epic soundtracks and your covers of them are always impressive!

So sick. I think this is one of the more underappreciated songs from the Castlevania series, and the instrument choices suit it perfectly.

This game is not liked much but I loved it as a kid and I think the music was a huge factor in that, Castlevania is my favorite franchise of all time. Nice cover as always, I'll be completely honest: I thought it was a lame instrument, but since I started seeing your videos, my opinion has changed, I didn't know the banjo could be so fun! Maybe I'll try to learn to play it in the future but not right now, I'm learning violin and oh god it's difficult. Thanks for this new video!

Remember writing down what some townsfolk said (with a dictionary) and trying to figure out what that one rumor in particular meant. Soon I find myself following some tip, counting trees in a forest finding absolutely nothing but plenty of spiders. Damn those fake news :D.

I played it back when I was in Jr high during the late 80s. I was already a fan from the first game so I was expecting it to be kind of the same. The game didn't explain a hell of a lot and I used to roam back and forth trying to make sense of the clues I would come across. I met a kid in school one day who told me about using the white crystal, after that the game finally opened up for me. I swear though, I literally threw holy water on every single square block in that game trying to discover anything that I could that might lead me to something new. I was obsessed with this game and still have the final password of mine burned into my memory. I plan to have it put on my head stone without any explanation attached whatsoever.

Nice, nice :D Castlevania II will always have a place near and dear to my heart. Was it great? Not really, but I enjoyed the music and besides the cryptic dialogue, it was fun to explore. I didn't think the kneeling at the precipice was that big of a deal. I mean, you do it early on in the game with the pond :/ I blame AVGN for mucking up that game's image more than anything :p Though I will add, Castlevania I and III are damned good in their own right.

You know, i never checked until now, but maybe the inspiration was the other way around. Castlevania 2 came out in 1987 and Far Beyond the Sun came out in 1989. Maybe Malmsteen was a Castlevania fan lol.
