- Just weeks after the earthquake that took more than 200,000 lives and devastated Haiti's capital city, a new normalcy is taking shape in Port-au-Prince.
The shock of so much loss has barely worn off, but the mountains of rubble are slowly being cleared. And where landmarks like the national palace and the cathedral once towered a new architecture has appeared.
Hundreds of tent cities have been set up, camps of internally displaced people who have lost their homes. Food distribution points dot the city, run primarily by the UN, with support from US troops.
These structures might be temporary, but at the makeshift government head quarters, in donor conferences, and in the boardrooms of international financial institutions, attention is turning to the long-term plan.
As pledges of billions of dollars of international aid and investment are made, Avi Lewis travels to Port-au-Prince and to the Plateau Central and finds that debates over the vision of a new Haiti are already underway.

hmm, I like that commenting has been allowed on this video, usually it's disabled. Nice to see Avi Lewis back again; I was worried the series had come to an end or been cancelled when it wasn't on last week. Keep up the good work Avi and AJE.
@0neofthem Sarkozy did give a million for the rebuilding of Haiti, and there are many french associations that also help for the rebuilding and the care of the population. Concerning the neighbors of Haiti, there is a racism between the domenicans and haitians, and the latinos countries.. Thanks to the Americans and other countries who gathered to help Haiti,Haitians are very grateful of it.
@kpierre2003 As you want, you are free to have your opinion.
But brush your mouth before you talk about people's family, don't "bet" on anything about this, you don't know anything about me. Second of all, I'll say it again, we don't want Aristide back, except those like you for x reasons..why Aristide back ? Dis-moi..
@kpierre2003 Yes,I was born in Port-au-prince,and lived there during 9 years. A part of my family is haitian, and some of my members live there.Personally we don't want Aristide back..the only haitians who ask for him is " le sous peuple " ,pas guin moune ki mande pou li.
This video forgot to mention the education problem in Haiti. Back in the 60's and 70's, Haiti was a rich country because the people were dictate what to do. It probably wasn't the best way but it worked. When the U.S. established democracy, things went downhill because the people are not educated and they only do as they please. Of course with no justice system and a very corrupted government, there was no way out. Rebuilding Haiti means building the people, educate them.

How many Coup Détat had we suffered with the aid of foreigners?
.
You know, there is a program that loans monies to those in need (kiva?), and I would love to see it implemented in Haiti. A program such as this could do a lot of good, while keeping the piggies (big biz) at bay; allowing those of us of fairly-limited means to actually help these people to become self-sufficient.
In my opinion, keeping big biz OUT OF Haiti would be most prudent, especially NOW! (Walmarts of the world, particularly). Big biz has damaged all of us recently; US econ, too!
Sorry to hear about the hurricane but that earthquake was a monster compared to a hurricane. 230,000 people died. The quake was 7.3 but it shook for a long time and can be compared to a 9.5. We the people of Haiti did cleaned up the best we could with our own hands. However, trucks and bulldozers were needed. 3 years after the quake, Haiti cleaned up real good and is in the process of reconstruction. You should come2haiti to see our progress and encourage tourism to Haiti. Haiti is beautiful!
@daniells71 I would not be surprised. But what really happened after Baby Doc fell post 1986, contracts were signed to allow produce (e.g., rice) to come in to the country much cheaper than us. In effect it killed our agriculture and put the farmers out of business. Then, most of the farmers went to Port-au-Prince to find work. This situation overcrowded PAP resulting in 300,000 deaths from the earthquake. Our government can reverse the agricultural policies but they do not want to.
The video states that Haiti imports almost everything. That is true. But the Haitian people are not lazy. Haiti has the potential to grow its own food (e.g., rice, mangos, coffee, sugar). The problem is that multi-nationals lowered their tariffs and flooded the Haitian market with their goods. In effect, the Haitians growers could not compete and drove them out of business. What needs to be done is a regulation of those tariffs to allow Haiti to compete so that jobs can be created.
1000 trucks are needed to clean up Haiti. Out of billions of dollars that were received thanks to the world's generosity only 100 million was actually disbursed. If more money would be disbursed for specific projects 1000 trucks can be purchased for the cleanup. There are 8 million unemployed people in Haiti. They can be given work to cleanup the rubbles. Six months after the earthquake it is incredible to see millions of unemployed with crossed harms. We need the funds to be disbursed!
I agree, in toto, with you. We need to help, is what I meant, by allowing Haitians to do what will be best for them. I believe WE need to not allow for international business-men to BUY Haiti (and Haitians, themselves), but to either donate monies and the tools these people need, and/or loan to Haitians (interest-free loans, in particular).
One of Haiti's biggest problems came with our paying their govt to NOT grow rice! They need food; they need the ability to grow that food, though!
@Didem92 well ur PART haitian family doesnt speak for the true full blooded haitians. I would be willing to bet that ur family arent even originial descendants from haiti. Of course ur members dont want aristide to come back so your opinion is NON GRATA to me. even as i come from jacmel, those "le sous peuple" as your call them are still MON PEUPLE. put aristide or the lavalas party in the elections tommorrow and see who wins so save ur comments
@Didem92 my question to you is are you haitian? what makes you think that no one wants aristide back? bc if what you see on the news??? he was so baddd that ppl were having demonstrations a couple of weeks ago asking for his return. As a haitian, I know the TRUTH n im not going to let some outsider tell me otherwise. the US overthrew aristide both times and destroyed haiti even before the earthquake
I loved that fact that the former prime minister stated" we are not going to accept another coup d eta!
There is a reason he said this, we all know, well most ppl know that the US overthrew Aristide in 2004, a democratic elected leader. the lavalas party was the strongest political party in Haiti. Dont you think its interesting that the lavalas have not be allowed to participate in any elections since aristide was overthrown?

But we have a voice now, there are more than 4 millionsHaitians diasporas all over the world. Imagine what will happen if we all come together for a better Haiti. Not for our own selfish reason, but for our brothers and sisters who are suffering in Haiti. I do not think any foreigner can love Haiti more than Haiti's own children. We cannot continue to just leave Haiti for the foreigners to dictate its future.
Ive said it for years and years but noone is shocked but the haiti is awed by the power of the earth which is didnt care about. it sounds mean to say it is there own fault but life is all balances, like wheels, and it is there fault but they need the spirit to get them through it all
"Men make their own history," wrote Karl Marx. "But they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under given circumstances directly encountered and inherited from the past." In this clip. a farmer calls out, "Decentralize the government's power TO the countryside!"
@manouchecamf So you do not want food, money or material support? Thats fine with me. I will call my congressman on monday and tell him Haiti doesn't need support or help. thanks for telling me:-)
so sad -breaks my heart ... there is hope in their eyes. I pray for them-my kids and I do - we sponsor a child in haiti - Her name is Loudwidge .. I hope to meet her one day ..
Question for tout les Haitiens-- Why are foreigners always telling what is good for Haiti? Why are they always making decision for Haiti? All the Haitians we need stand up for Haiti!!!
why the hell doesn't france or haiti's neighbors do a greater part in the rebuilding. its always america that pays for all the shit that happens in the world.
do we the u.s.a. get help when we are suffering as well?does the united states of america suffer while our goverment helps other countries?
Yes, Haitians that left Haiti for a better life need to give back, not just monetary, but time, going to Haiti.
he need to stop speaking french,,,speak Creole. The french was the one that oppressed the Ayisen.
As they say; TEACH A MAN TO FISH.
If the Haitians can farm and get past their government, they will make it-- much better, too!
Great report!
I hope this happens for all of these survivors.
Preval should resign from office....and leave the country to foreigners
faultlines bullshit, most high wrath does this devistation...
do we the u.s.a. get help when we are suffering as well?does the united states of america suffer while our goverment helps other countries?
mezanmi nou gen anpil travay devan nou!
most of these people are not, ,"city folk", and wold be better-off were they able to farm again, and for their goods to somehow be able to compete on the world market.
Sadly, this is only one country's people that the world has taken serious advantage of... it has not helped the USA, nor has it helped HAITI!
Great Job!!! Great comments also!! Except for the few comments from users that are cursing at each other! Now is a time to be positive!!
Well said Mediaboxful!!
btw; it's our govt (that was Clinton., sadly), as well as their govt, that is the problem.
Amazing that its still being rebuilt.
Once you can not provide for yourself; if I went to the, to the store I brought you whatever I like. What can you do for haiti?
I hope not!
Great work Avi!
Isn't the answer for these questions clear? Our greedy politicians allow it to happen. Don't tell me you forgot that? Ah ma chere
