Great idea! This is why TH-cam is such a treasure. So many people have discovered innovative solutions to various tasks and what a wonderful way to share experience.
I have been searching for days to find the covering system that would best fit my needs, and thanks to you, I have FOUND IT! Thank you very much, great idea!
I feel like this is exactly what I am looking for!! I was trying to think of how I could do something like this and found your video. It appears to be something I can do myself. Thank you!!
So brilliant and the 3/4” bar actually adds stability to the standing 1/2” pvc I’m gonna add the cross bar on both the front and rear, as my beds are 4x8 ft which will allow me access to the full bed. This is super cool, I’ve watched a ton of videos and just never found one that could be so interchangeable. I can easily switch from netting to plastic. And I can set it up all by myself, so cool. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent approach. I will be adding this to my beds over the next couple of days. I will probably add a couple more PVC support hoops on the inside but not part of the slide mechanism to also support shade cloth as well. I'm going to have to lengthen the hoops for my tomatoes, squash, and cucumber beds but the design is fine for my potatoes, peppers, and broccoli. I may as also shorten it for my strawberries and onions. Thanks for documenting this.
GENIUS! I in the middle of putting one together like this. I'm wondering if maybe inserting a short piece of rebar into the bottom rail would give the weight to stay closed if it turns out to be needed. Hope it doesn't. Thanks so much for sharing this!
One year update: It worked pretty well and kept out the deer. I don't have a rat or possum problem in my area but deer are terrible. I underestimated the overgrowth from the plants and they ended up growing into the netting and it made it hard to open and shut. It's a great idea but I would probably go much taller this year or do smaller plants.
Clever design.. . when someone comes up with an original concept like this there is always something that you wish you had done differently once you see what happens over time... .. but I'm going to incorporate some of your ideas into my garden bed. thanks for posting..
Instead of netting you could use heavy duty plastic sheeting. That's what my carpenter husband did yesterday. I never thought of stuff getting stuck in the netting while watching but we've had that happen in our garden too. This plastic is 6 mil and sold at Lowe's.
I just made a square frame 8ft high around the bed using 8 ft pvc pipes with two feet extra on all sides so I can walk around the bed. I made a pvc door with hinges to walk in. This way you never have to move the netting.
What an ingenious idea !! How wide is your garden? That looks like an awfully sharp bend in the PVC in that short distance. Did you have any problems bending it like that without it snapping? Also, any issues with woodchucks chewing through the plastic netting? Do you ever have birds flying into and getting caught in the net when it's closed down? Thanks for posting this excellent idea !!!
You could re-do the audio narrative keeping the video. Parts of the audio are not usable because of the wind. But the video gets your method spot on. Thanks!
I'm striggling a bit to understand how you did the two sides - is the netting on those also loosely attached and somehow rises with the vertical bar? The "garage door" sides make a lot of sense - but I'm not sure I see how you manages to close the two smaller sides. The hooks at the bottom make sense - its the attachments along the PVC part that I'm a little confused on.
Thank you for your video. I needed to see how you installed the netting. I am picturing placing the netting over the arch and securing both sides with ties? Thanks again
@@bryantbulls6322 I have hooks on the sides for when it is closed, the net on the sides can hook in securely to the hooks. The side nets have to be unhooked to slide the front up. Side nets are not independent.
Thanks so much! I've been considering all kinds of solutions to my deer/rabbit/chicken problem, and I think this will work. Hope the deer fence will be strong enough. Let us know how this worked for you.
it appears you did the slide netting system on only the down hill side. Also looks like your bed is narrow enough you can reach across. My beds are 4' wide. Would you recommend the same system for the opposite side or simply sliding completely over?
PVC rots in the sun pretty quickly. I'm thinking 1/2" galvanized metal conduit for a frame. Easy to bend with a cheapo bender and can put a hinge on one side to open the bed. Just an idear. We'll see if my plan works.
Where you have the posts, Install 2x4x8 on all the posts standing up, then you still use pvc but much higher. So something like this |--|. Except pvc will still be bent. Then also you can tie strings to the pvc to support the plant growing.
You must have very docile deer. Ours would push through soft netting. Or the bucks would get their antlers caught. I have a raised bed with galvanized hoop style poles and rabbit wire. It fits a regular gate at each end. Tall enough to talk into, 7 foot tall by 6 foot wide.
Great job, what kind boards did you use? IM gonna make mine just like yours, have deer problem, and a slope in my yard .Perfect,so glad I found your channel! Please keep up the videos. BLESSINGS!!!!

Great idea. We are in the process of trying to put a cover over the beds to keep the squirrels out. This idea helps a lot
What a fantastic idea with the sliding PVC! I will be using that soon, thank you.
Wow, what a brilliant way to secure your Garden bed! This is exactly what I need to keep the rabbits out of my garden.
LOVE the way you attached the netting and the fact that it can easily be opened for access is awesome! Thank You
Fantastic for me. This is what I was trying figure out how to do. To keep peacocks out of my beds. Thank you so much.

If you find that you need to weigh down the netting bars, you can disassemble them and fill with sand. Excellent design, thanks for sharing!
now your thinking, nice!
super slick idea! definitely going to use!
Some of the best ideas I've seen so far on deer proofing.
Wow, the ability to slide it open like that is ingenious!
We just finished putting in the PVC covers for bird netting based on your design, and they work great! Thank you!
I wish I could push the like button a million t8mes. So smart finally!
Very clever and nice finish
i just came across your video, great setup !
What a great idea on the structure that holds the netting!
Such a ingenious idea!
thanks for the brilliant idea mate - you have solved all my problems

The pvc bar is very clever! I have seen a design using strings that allow plastic to be pulled up/down but the bar is something new.
I like your video. Easy to install. Thank you.

What did you plant that was too tall?
It was too short? Where you growing indeterminate tomatoes? That's what happened to me when I tried to put a net over them for the squirrels.
Thank you! I am going to try this on my raised container garden that we use on our patio. We also have lots of deer!
Good idea!

Thanks for the video, good design!
Bravo! Well done....
This is so clever!
So damn smart. Thank you!
Ingenius. Thanks
Very clever
Clever.
Good idea. Good for birds. Not squirrels.
Wow, really clever!
Thanks for the video tutorial. I was wondering, in the winter time, can you convert from deer netting to plastic? Turn it into a greenhouse?
I just made a square frame 8ft high around the bed using 8 ft pvc pipes with two feet extra on all sides so I can walk around the bed. I made a pvc door with hinges to walk in. This way you never have to move the netting.
Would love to see a photo :)

Hi I did this with a 4 x8 foot bed. The pipes have been up over the winter and all is well.
What connection did you use for the top of the hoop? This is really nice. I love that it opens, did the plastic work the same on top?
Drill a hole small enough for zipties and zip tie the base of rhe pvc outfit. Otherwise great. Im going to use this layout

What stops the loops falling over sideways?

Yes that is exactly how I did it. Tried to keep it simple.
@@wildcat9090 how did you secure the netting on the ends without it getting in the way when you slide open the long sides?
@@bryantbulls6322 I have hooks on the sides for when it is closed, the net on the sides can hook in securely to the hooks. The side nets have to be unhooked to slide the front up. Side nets are not independent.

Absolutely not true about PVC rotting in the sun pretty quickly.
@@wildcat9090 two to three years before it's brittle and cracks here. We get a lot of sun

Hell yeah man I’m doing this. I just had a cat shit in my raised bed.
Not sure what I’m missing - how did the pipe fit over the zip ties on the ends when slid up?
the net on the sides is a separate cut or is it all together with the main net?
can you tell me what kind of net and where you get it
Brilliant
Thank you very much for your ingenious video! Will this cover stop rats and possums?
I love this idea, but I am having a hard time attching the netting. Can you describe how you attached it??
I used zip ties at corners and ends, and as needed.
@@wildcat9090 but what about the ends?? Did you cut them to fit that size and then zip tie them on??
Great job, what kind boards did you use? IM gonna make mine just like yours, have deer problem, and a slope in my yard .Perfect,so glad I found your channel! Please keep up the videos. BLESSINGS!!!!
1" x 12" x however long you want your bed. Green treated.
Is it ok to use treated lumber for a garden that you will be eating from?
These days they don't use arsenic. I went with cedar as it just feels better, but treated wood is definitely safer that in the bad old days.
Is the netting split also? Two pieces, one on the right and one on the left?
The netting is cut, yes. It allows each side to slide up without being inhibited by the sides.
I wish you would have mentioned the exact name of those hooks. Or given a link to them.
I don't know the names of the hooks. I randomly grabbed some at a hardware store and they seemed to work. I'd browse a local hardware store.

@@TheCageyB - Thanks man
@@wildcat9090 - Cool. Been looking for those for the same reason
What about a small tie going around a peg, or hook.
how deep into the ground did you put the posts?
Only 6 inches, give or take. With how much it all weighs it doesn't go anywhere. Posts are just to keep it from sliding.
Great video. Question. On the end PVCs, do you have to cut the zip ties holding the netting each time you want to open?
I have the same question.
looks like he left the zip ties a bit loose. the netting will slide but stay in place
The zip ties are loose. He explained this.
how much did all the pvc cost?
Hi, where did you get that netting ?
Deer Netting. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A286YU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
will that netting keep squirrels out???
It kept them out for me, I'm sure a determined squirrel could eventually find a way in but I didn't have any problems with them.
hello..where go you find those clip type hooks that you used on the sides? thanks

Use 4x4 cedar posts not treated post. The chemicals in the treated post are harmful to you.
